The older I get, the more reluctant I am to try something new (sadly). However....I did collect calendula petals all summer, and I made salve this morning. I gifted two little tins this afternoon, and it was a hit. We are having a cold snap in the northwest coast of British Columbia, so it's a balm for our rough hands. Thanks for sharing, Vivi.
I made some last summer for my granddaughter, who has excema. I was so surprised that it was so easy. I had some left over and I've been using it on my hands and forearms, which became really thin and dry from taking prednisone. One caution, however. I made the mistake of buying a brick of beeswax and it is a chore to shred it into size that will melt easily. The was that is already shredded is so convenient, it's worth a little extra. Because this was so easy and it worked so well, it has inspired me to plant several medicinal herbs to make ointments and oils from. The plants are also good for your organic garden, as many of them are bee and predatory insect attractants.
Re-watching just before I get my second batch of this going for Christmas presents. Can't believe I didn't leave a comment before, how careless. Thank you for having shared this with us Vivi. It makes such a lovely balm!
I've been macerating some lavender tops for a little while in sweet almond oil and I'd love to make it into a balm. So I thought I'd revisit this video to give me an idea of other ingredients and amounts. Very useful! R.
Lovely little pots of healing balm. I have known farmer's use it on their cows cracked udders, and midwives recommend it for nursing mothers. Good for dry cracked lips too, but might be better to leave out the lavender for that!! Great video 😁💮
It's the perfect little fix all balm. I used to come home from work with cracks in my fingers from all the scrubbing.....this, used overnight, would fix me. :-)
I decided to try making balm last summer. I ended up deciding to just use the coconut oil to infuse the herbs in. Once it is infused, it acts just like a balm. I was very pleased with the results. I made 8 jars, and all my family loved it, so only ended up with 2. LOL
Fabulous! I make a similar balm with olive oil, beeswax and cocoa butter. It's so easy and inexpensive...a tiny Burt's Bees lip balm can cost $6-$8, but you can make this yourself for pennies. I keep mine in little ramekins. I'll be growing calendula this year, since your recipes look so lovely. :)
EEK! I forgot to get my Calendula oil going after seeing your video about that, months ago. So, as soon as I watched this video, I hopped up and grabbed the last of the dried flowers that I hadn't plucked the petals from and I'll get them soaking in the sweet almond oil as soon as I get some all I have in the pantry is roasted. We've been making all of our own lotions and balms for years now and they are simply the best! Your little patch of Calendula flowers were so pretty I grew my own little patch last spring and there were l-o-v-e-l-y! Informed. Inspired. Infusing! :) XoXo
Lovely, thanks for sharing! I love making my own natural cosmetic products like balms, bath bombs, soap, conditioner, scrubs, face masks, etc. It’s a lot of fun and they do make great gifts. Like you mentioned I have a special set of supplies to use for cosmetic making so everything stays separate.
Oh Vivi! I have finally made my first batch of hand balm and lip salve using your recipe. Gorgeous! Hand balm flowery and peppermint lippy. So grateful for this vid!! Thanks x ❤
Ooh, I've been so looking forward to this TIY, thanks Vivi! From recent experience, I'll add that one thing NOT to do with dried calendula petals is to add a generous handful to a homemade bathbomb. Silly me didn't think that one through...masses of rehydrated petals clogging up the plughole and sticking to everything. I hope you're bearing up well after your loss Vivi, thoughts are with you. x
Those little jars are adorable! And the balm looks amazing! I came looking for the recipe when you mentioned it on a recent video. Thank you for sharing your recipe!!
Ooooh, yay! Have fun doing it together! Not sure how old they are but they might also enjoy drawing labels/tags with calendula flowers to hang around the necks of the pots......
This video couldn't have come at a better time! I haven't had any problems with eczema in years but all of a sudden it's popping up on my face and around my eyes! I'd love to treat it naturally so I'll be giving this a go for sure.
This is so cool!!! I made calendula balm two years ago as my first foray into homemade cosmetics...having seen this I'm going to save all my calendula leaves this summer!:D
Superb! And I just accidentally discovered that it does a good number on chilblains. Yes, it's April, but I've still got the blessed things. It's a bit parky over here in Gloucestershire. My fancy chilblain ointment was just about all gone, it's the one that starts Akil...., so I thought I'd give your balm a whirl. A couple of days later, no chilblains. Now the sciencey bit of me (less than 1%) knows that correlation is not causation, but all the same I'll take it, and I'll keep using your fab balm. Thank you Vivi :) x
Oh I am SOOOOO glad you gave this a go!!! AND...that it worked for you. I've never suffered with chilblains but was delighted to hear from a relative that it worked for her. Oooh, there's something in this! 😊
Vivi, I finally found your recipe. Thank you for sharing. I shared it on my Facebook group so I don't forget it LOL I will let you know how my first batch turns out :)
Thank you Vivi... I don't know why I've put off watching this one.. anyway I've saved it for later reference and have ordered calendula seeds!! YAY! Hope your nasty cold is getting better. Snuggle down and take lots of vitamin C
I love your recipe video. Have you considered producing a book . Your allotment tips, lovely recipes for soups etc, preserving and skin care recipes. I'd be first to purchase one.
I'm the same, always get distracted but the garden or other similar projects. Book writing is more of a winter project. You may be surprised at how many people would purchase it. You have a lovely Earth mother approach.
Well that was easy peasy! That will be on my to grow and do list for this year, my sis suffers dreadfully from that behind her ears, that might be something nice for her to try. Still dark and wet and just mucky here too, the clouds parted just enough yesterday to show that there still is blue sky up in the heavens, but kept the sun a secret, such a tease hehe. Have a wonderful day!😆
One of the things I love about making this is having the flowers in the garden.......the insects LOVE them, the passers-by love them.....and I love them. It's a win whichever way you look at it. Happy calendula growing this year (once the sun comes back!!!!!!). :-)
Hey Vivi I have a recycling idea for you. What do you do with the used petals? Do you think you could use them as a base for potpourri or incense? My thinking is that the potpourri might collect dust, and the incense might be smokey, but Id at least stuff the petals in a mesh bag (or use that cloth you strained with) and pop it in the bath tub like a big tea bag.
I have been infusing calendula for many years. What I do with the used petals is to use them in a pure coconut cp soap. Looks and feels great inside the white soap. Cheers
Vivi, This is for a hand/rash cream but what's the difference for a lip balm? (If I leave out the essential oil since most are not food grade). Would a lip balm use more wax?
While you have a bit of time... maybe get a business plan for your bank together. Take into consideration the current market & competitors for these products & do some research on on-line sales. Start the BPlan now and keep amending as you go. You'll definitely need some start up capital from a bank (eventually) that will outstrip any crowd-funding you can raise on your own at the beginning. Good record & bookkeeping is essential to save you money at the accountants office too. Best of luck Vivi!!! 🌼🌻🌺🌱🥀🌾🌿🌴
I just love you Vivi - does this or anything else you know of help keratosis pilaris? ( i.e. chicken skin) especially ALL OVER YOUR BODY!!! Do you know, nursie, if kerkatosis pilaris will also occur on the scalp to cause hair loss??? Help!
Gosh, sorry I don't know........I was a bone marrow/stem cell transplant nurse......ask me about blood and I'll tell you but dermatology wasn't something I ever really studied. If I hear of anything I'll let you know.
@@WhatVivididnext thank you. I’ve tried it, but can only smell the coconut. Will try again with more fragrance oil. It still feels lovely on the skin ❤️

Could you say how much more? Or is it a trade secret?

You're very welcome. :-)
Can you infuse the oil with the whole flower or just the petals?
No, just use the petals. 😊
Is there a quicker way to do this using the canudula oil
Which part of the process are you referring to?
a way u can infuse oil quicker is in a mini melting pot like u use with chocolate on low for 2 hrs :) the way i do it for my bath bombs
Absolutely........I prefer the cold method though as it uses less fuel........and teaches me the art of patience. ;-)
:) i do it because i run out of that product quite fast and sometimes a little short for a recipe when i have measured out the other ingredients
I hear ya! I never seem to have enough on the go.....need to plant even more flowers this year. :-)
i love to infuse lavender aswell mmm yummy
How long do you leave the mixture to cook before adding the fragrance oil?
It isn't cooking as such....simply melting.....when it has all melted, take it off the heat and add the essential oil/s then. 😊
@@WhatVivididnext thank you. I’ve tried it, but can only smell the coconut. Will try again with more fragrance oil. It still feels lovely on the skin ❤️
How do you prepare the calendula petals for this
I harvest the flower heads and lay them in trays to dry......once dry I pull off the petals and store in air-tight jars until needed. :-)
i bet that smells devine,,,xx
It's very subtle scent but, yes, it's lovely. :-)
