I was in the US Military. My partner was a Civilian Medic and Biologist who worked in Warzones. We watched Violet Evergarden last year, and cried through it, watching the whole thing.
Because it very accurately described the feeling of trying to regain your humanity after seeing the worst of it. The feeling of being unable to breathe because of the overwhelming feeling of guilt and shame and terror that comes when you finally feel safe enough to.
I'm sitting at work crying because of the loss of empathy, the loss of humanity that this means for the world.
    I am so sorry.

I haven't seen the things you and your brother have, but I cried through every episode as well. I grew up totally detached from my feelings because of the circumstances I was in. Watching Violet Evergarden was exactly like watching myself struggle through years of trying to connect with myself again.
The fact that one show could touch such incredibly different audiences speaks volumes.

When I was living with my mom for a summer I was jobless, hopeless, and depressed. My whole life was collapsing, my friends were miles away, and I drank and drank constantly to try and squeeze some joy out of waking up and doing anything. I had no future, no plan, and no want to be anything more than a miserable, depressed child. I watched Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid expecting it to be a dumb sleazy jerk-off festival that I'd just whack it to and then move on, and found myself taken by a cute, honest and genuine show about someone from another world struggling to find worth in humanity, and the family they were able to create.
I'm not hesitant to say that it saved me from myself because of the honest, real joy I felt when I watched it.

Right now I'm living my dream by spending an exchange semester in Kyoto and already went to Uji just to see the building, were my favourite animes have been made. KyoAni has given me so much throughout my childhood, youth and my weird in-between-youth-and-adult-life.
I'm still a weeb, but I'm so much closer now and when this happened, I was sitting in class. I had just finished my last exam and starting sobbing when I looked at the japanese news. To me this is so close and it felt so much more real than I can even tell. We talked about it in class and I think it hit everyone so hard, my professors were shocked and coming from a safe country into a very safe country made it even worse for me.
I'm so sorry for all those, who have lost a family member, friend, coworker, rolemodel and just someone to admire. And with all my heart, all of these people will get better soon and not be pressured back into their everyday life. It's not much, but I sent over as much love as possible. Thank you Kyoto Animation.

I was able to recognize and overcome both my depression and social anxiety because A Silent Voice touched me in a way that allowed me to seek help. There is nothing in this world I wouldn't throw away to retain the lessons and love that the works of your studio have brought into my life. I, truly, am happy in life, and it is because of your works, and the works that were inspired directly from your works. My heart aches in a way that is very familiar to me, accept this time it is not for myself, but for another. For the studio that gave me my light. For the creators whose imagination brought that light into existence. Nurtured it. Cared for it. And who may have lost their life in that blaze. My heart aches. I had insomnia and so even though this happened around 10 a.m. in Japan I was still awake here on the east coast of the US.
I saw the first news reports when there was only three deaths announced. I was in shock more worried than angry and as the death toll grew my anger grew with it.
it's rare for me to shed a tear as it takes something truly sad or profound to get that kind of reaction out of me. it's rare for me to be enraged as it takes something truly Wicked and unfair to provoke that emotion from me.
that night I cried and was enraged wanting nothing more than 5 minutes alone with the one responsible.
I've never wanted the ability to teleport and time travel so much. I just wanted to be standing at the door to give him a proper greeting when he walked up.
sure I'd be in jail right now but the news would have read of only one fatality and that building and all those talented wonderful people would still be safe.
I feel for the families friends coworkers and loved ones of the victims I'm not even that big of a fan of their work specifically I'm familiar with it but they're normal Fair doesn't suit my usual tastes in anime the only work of theirs I had seen prior to this was full Metal Panic but I've been watching a bunch more since this tragedy as it's the only way I can show support it's tragedies like this that remind you to hold your loved ones close and makes you realize how fragile life is and reminds you to celebrate it and hopefully prevent you from taking it for granted

i've already cried about this many times. and now again i'm in tears. i too struggle with the desire to see this monster mutilated publicly and also too not giving into that emotion and feeding into that monster. this is one of the worst tragedies in my life. I was deadened to 9/11 as an american but I was young, and it hurt but it was some loss of life i didn't feel much of a connection with. It was a terrible tragedy but it was just like people dying of starvation, and lately the rise of school shootings again have deadened my emotions to them as they happen so often and I grew up hearing about columbine and such so the gravity never felt real. I've loved anime for the majority of my life and this studio has been incredibly important to me as i've grown up. I don't know if I could every fully explain my connection to anime and it's creators but this attack, this needless loss of life of those so ethereal and yet still so important to me, has felt devastating.

K'ON, Haruhi, Dragon Maid, and Lucky Star were all fascinating in their own right and as mentioned by everyone else could not have been pulled off without the care and engaged staff of a little animation studio in Kyoto. They've brought joy to millions the world over and did not deserve any of this but the community has responded with their love and support. The last I saw we were at:

I've been brought to near tears, by both yours and Gigguk's videos on the topic. And this has caused a sort of conflict within me.
When school shootings happen in the United States, I don't give it a thought. At the country festival in vegas, as terrible as it was, it didn't affect me. Even though they happened in my country.
But when an animation studio, in a world away goes up in flames, and innocent lives of artists are lost in the process, I freeze and can't quite comprehend what occurred. I'm not saying that any one tragedy is necessarily worse than another, other than the obvious metric being number of lives lost/affected, but the conflict arises when I've become numb to tragedies happening closer to home, almost in my own back yard.
I'm not sure what I'm trying to get out of posting this, but I'm curious if there are others going through the same thing as I am. Anime has been in my life since I was young, and my uncle was able to foster a deeper love of it in me, spending weekends binge watching VHS tapes he bought at the flea market of Outlaw Star, Flame of Recca, Cowboy Bebop and Ninja Scroll. And I think that's my explanation there. The biggest factor of my life, that's been with me since I can remember, can be taken away so easily. That these innocent people, who's lives were taken away doing the thing that they love doing, were so easily snuffed out.
Maybe I'm not quite getting across what I want to say, but thank you Geoff for being able to put into words, what others like me may not be able too. Thank you anime community, and your ability to stand together and help support the staff, and studio in need. And thank you KyoAni, for your dedication to your employees, and passion of the art.

Tamako Market was the first KyoAni show I saw & I loved it, but The emotions I still have watching Violet Evergarden hit me so viscerally that I sought out their shows. A Silent Voice has become my favorite anime movie which says a lot to take over from Princess Mononoke. I cried when I woke up & saw the news & still don’t think I’ve processed it fully. Thanks Geoff for finding the words I haven’t been able to fully state.

I teared up watching this. Thank you for sharing. It's so true, and I hadn't really thought about animation that way before but it makes sense.
Praying for everyone to be comforted and provided for. And here is a free internet hug to whoever needs one.

The anime community is honestly fucking amazing. For all the shit we get for enjoying anime we don't stop watching because each of us has been touched by it. Naruto, my first anime, was only a fun show that I could watch after doing homework, but years later I rewatched it and discovered a deep love I didn't realize I had for it. I only used to watch Naruto, but after a period of hard times I branched out. Anime lifted me up and kept my head on straight during my time of need. Anime and friends kept me from falling into a dark cold pit that I would be deep into by now without it. To think that anyone would want to destroy the hard work of these employees is despicable. These are people that have brought light and love into our lives without even speaking to or ever seeing us. I honestly wish I could do more than just send my best regards, but I'm just a broke fifteen-year-old. I honestly hope, no, I know they will get back on their feet. Because we're all here, ready to repay a debt we owe in any way we can.

This is one of the most powerful videos you have ever produced.
Thought provoking from your analysis of how countries are defined and built, and understanding of likening it to the medium; to the creativity spawned by those master storytellers.
This is a video I will rewatch and refer back to later to spread with everyone about why I chose my entertainment medium to go into.

Thank you for putting into words what we feel as a community about this tragedy. I can't even begin to articulate how I feel because the pain is just too raw. This studio is a world treasure, the people who worked in it are world treasures... this loss is too profound and painful.

Anime has had a massive impact for me in my life especially in the past couple of years. The depth to characters, or even their blatant lack of depth as social commentary or comedy... it’s always enjoyable and makes me often question how I view things. (Also I loved the little sprinkle of “lvs” from the Koe no Katachi soundtrack)

Just finished making my donation! What you said in this video is very moving and perfectly describes the power of anime and how it has touched all of our lives. I wish the best for the people at Kyoto Animation, they won't be able to get back everything that they lost but at the very least we can help them heal.

Spice and Wolf was my first anime, and that might have been my last anime if it wasn’t for my second anime K-on!
2 seasons, OVA’s and a movie filled with lovable characters, fun and cheerful music and great animation was enough for me to keep watching the amazing art form, my 4th and 5th anime were Lucky Star and Haruhi Suzumiya and I was sucked it and for the past 7 years I’ve been a huge anime lover, so I can give a huge thank you to Kyoto Animation.

This event hurt me alot. Clannad was my first anime, besides pokemon and yugioh, and is what really got me into anime. Not only that but this studio has the only three film that have truly made me breakdown and cry. But I am glad that this community had risen up so fast to help them. This is why I am proud and loud about this community.

Well said man. You moved me to tears, and as you talked I remembered my childhood. I was a neglected child, grew up in a broken family, developed depression rooting from childhood, it wasn't easy growing up. But it was anime who saved me. I was able to grow up into a decent adult because I modeled characters in this medium whom I assumed would have been a good parent or family if I did have one.
I am 22 now and currently under training as a hospital staff bound to Japan. Ever since I was younger, if ever I'll be offering my 100% service I would want to offer it to the people who helped me develop who I am now. And that is the country where my love of Anime originated. Japan. It is sad that I cannot help for now. But I hope my lifetime service to their country would reach them one day.

They’re coming out with new animations too.
We just have to hope for the best.
Those will probably be delayed or not even released.
We might not even get to see the progress.
We wish for the best, kyoani.

I'd put off watching this, probably because I didn't yet want to face the situation any more than I already had. I think this helped me do that, and it was a lovely reflection on the things we should focus on in the wake of tragedy. To help the people harmed, and to hold the line against the darkness and hatred in the world, and in us. It has helped me dull my reflex to see punishment, and that is no small thing.

Kyotoanimation was one of the best anime studies, that man deserves to suffer for the lifes he took, hopefully the studies can recover soon and that the souls of the ones that died can rest.

Kyoto is the reason to why I joined the anime community, Anime ascends world explanation in a beautiful way and rejoices the billions or millions of people out there. I wish I could help kyoto, but all I can do so far is pray for the best to them.
