I’m a IT troglodyte so can only imagine the effort that went building those thirty-seven minutes of pure unadulterated pleasure for we viewers. Thanks guys.
This is now just entertainment. Many watching likely don't realize this could have been very real for us old Cold War veterans. After Brezhnev died, and before Gorbachev became Premier, Politburo meetings had been heated about initiating a "Red Storm" or not, before their economy collapsed and their technology became useless. During the Reforger exercises in '84 the Soviet Northern Fleet were very aggressive in their shadowing our task forces. Beaŕs flew right over the ASW group my ship was part of, at about 300 metres. Another scenario a Kresta steamed right through the middle of our escort group onstead of going around. For my family it would have been potentially tragic. A brother and cousin were with units slated for Norway rapid response, and me doing convoy escorting. I have an emotional connection to this story, of what could have been.
Hello Steven...I was on the Eisenhower in the early 80s. During our deployments and NATO exercises, we could count on a Krivak class frigate escorting us, trying to gather any tidbits of intel they thought was useful...not knowing that the Walker spy ring was already spoonfeeding the Soviets any and all data they could get their hands on...To this day, I wonder why they weren't dealt more severe punishments...
I graduated HS in 1982 and went to engineering school from there. Younger and middle-aged Americans today often lack the awareness that during the 20th century, communist regimes, most often led by the Russians, really did try to take over the world. The so-called "Cold War" was a real war and many real people died and were injured in resisting their efforts to take over and enslave nations. Freedom is not free; you can pretty much depend on aggressive human beings being around who want to dominate and exploit you, and the only thing these thugs understand or respect is force.
Sir, Mr Weaver, as a Cold War child born in West Germany I can tell you that those of us who are conscious will never forget the resolve of the USA that kept the Cold War Cold. Back in those days many sentences in West Germany ended with "If the Russians come over the fence"... all this was as real as it gets, the East German Commies wanted to get us in the West killed bad, it was the Russians keeping those lunatics back. NATO kept us alive.

I would have liked to call in a fire mission with the 16's on a BB, just once. 😅
