...if you lift too high you shift and throw that run away as lost otherwise a little lift is controlled and the rider is aware that itll come but get the right gearing and clutch set up and it wont lift at all (GSXR-1000 with NOS rider here (best time: 7.999))

Going fast in a straight line on a bike isn't hard. Getting off the line in a tidy manner is tricky but all you need to do then is tuck in and hold on (and most fast bikes have traction now anyway) TT, of course but that's not a drag race. Racing in a car is also highly skilled.
@Michael Pullins Sorry but that is false. Just because you use traction control does not mean you cant ride. I know owners of superdukes, s1000rr's, R1s, Zx10r's, and for the road they almost always at least have their bikes on a low tc setting. Besides, i believe Dee Jarvis was referring to launch control and not traction control.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate what a good bit of riding that Ducati pilot displayed? I mean the other two basically had to mash their foot and hold the steering wheel straight - those cars literally did all the work. That bike launch, shifts, and overall run took masterful skill. Kudos to the rider.

Why is Ferrari such a bad sport when it comes to lending cars for comparative tests....they even prevented Top Gear from having a head to head with the P1/918 when they had all 3 in the studio. McLaren and Porsche are just like 'lol go ahead', they're comfortable with their cars being compared to incredibly good rivals and they know people will still pay millions for them regardless of which one is a few milliseconds faster around a race track.

that the 918 takes longer to get to 200 is because after 250Km/h (155mp/h) the front electric motor disengages from the wheels. it does so because unlike the rear electric motor it doesn't have a gearbox between it and the frontwheels so it would keep spinning fatster and fatster wich could damage or destroy it. And so after 250km/h the 918 is missing 125hp and thats why it takes longer to get to 200

Actually, the bike is king. 2nd to 30. 2nd to 60. 1st to 100. 1st to 150. And 1st in the standing mile. Autocar needs to review the data with staff members who can read.
You also need to read or listen as the race was first to 200mph! The bikes gears topped out at 192mph hitting max revs which is when the P1 took over and hit 200 mph before the bike could wind up the other 8mph, so with a longer last year the bike could win but then your modifying it so you could also modify the P1 and then where do you stop? Obviously there are bikes and cars out there that can destroy these but you have to heavily modify them whereas all 3 of these are stock!
Martyn Dyson It didn't top out. Motorbike manufacturers put a 6th gear RPM limiter on sports bikes to restrict how fast they can go. For instance my old Hayabusa can go over 200mph because I put a Power Commander on it, with fools the ECU in thinking it's still in 5th gear.. so the limiter doesn't kick in and it's free to go. And no.. I haven't gone that fast with it. No highways around here safe enough to try it and 155mph was scary enough for me.
MORAL : If you want a car for 1 mile drag race, buy P1. If you want a car for track times, buy 918, If you are a jerk who never wants to win against P1 or 918, buy LaFerrari.

A bike is no doubt the most efficient way of high-performance transportation but it totally sucks in the wet/cold in comparison. For the summer it's the ideal choice if you aren't carrying people around or worrying about your clothes/hair being messed up on the way to the destination.
While we all know Ferrari isn't big on these battles and that's sorta sad, there is not a single reason to believe the LaFerrari would not have beaten both the 918 and P1 in this race.

None of these cars are simple by any means, but the Ferrari is definitely the most simple of the 3. Less was required to meet the goals in making the car. And they sold/made less cars and sold them all on the "Ferrari" name alone, no one outside of Ferrari drove them until they shipped out. As for the "dick waving", I think its completely necessary. How do you get potential buyers, future customers, etc excited about your cars and brand? If the bike had another gearing it would do it in way under 25sec i've Seen regular bmw' s1000rr doing it under 25sec and they're much slower then a panigale superleggera.. But those BMW has changed sprockets so they can accelerate for 1 mile this bike was hitting 190 mph in 1km or 0.7 miles lol.. So re gear it and it would never been Seen AGAIN
The bike had it's mile-time highlighted, but as stated it was a stand-in for another car. The video was intended as a hypercar showdown... Who cares about bikes in a straight line anyway ^^ Mopeds for grown-ups.
Awesome video, the start is indeed surprising, I thought the 918 would get a bigger advantage from its 4WD system! What a shame Ferrari didn't come with a car... Since it's lighter and more powerful, there's no reason not to :/
LaFerrari weight figures have been creeping out. It is not much lighter then the P1 like all have been claiming. So the Mclaren does have a small chance due to a smaller package. I think LaFerrari is carrying more in CD vs the P1. The Ferrari is slightly stronger but all the numbers seem to even out. The Top Gear test had them even at 100 so all is inline here.
That was odd too, but I feel like they should have done more runs. Even the older GTR, Lambo and 911 Turbo S can get under 2.9 seconds to 60, so this made these cars look slower than I expected.
***** topgear print magazine tested both already and ... the 918 destroyed the P1 in corner speed by lightyears... the tester took a corner with the P1 at 130mph and nearly lost it... he took the corner with the 918 several times with increasing speed... he runs out of big enough balls at 160mph....
nagmashot I read that article too and I can't remember it that well but I was under the impression the driver wasn't a real pro driver so it will be interesting to see what the stig can do.

On accepted/used straight line racing terms Bike won. Cars are fast boxes and have their strengths, but bikes (from consensus below) are for those with real balls.

The P1 caught up because the bike hit its limiter. It was also the fastest at the standing mile. I'm not aware of any track in the world with a mile of straight so I'm pretty sure this all adds up to the bike having the most usable speed. Oh and you can also get something reasonably close to the Superleggera for what you'd pay for tires on the 918 and P1...

The fact the bike matched the two cars off the line while managing wheelie effect is immense, what a rider!. Even as a biker myself, it still astonishes me that both a P1 and 918 at full tilt are going backwards from the rear camera on the bike. And to only be caught by the P1 because it ran out of gearing is mind blowing, give it an extra gear and that Ducati would probably just keep going at the same pace. "On this day, the P1 was king". Gotta give credit to the P1 for straight line performances over 130mph. It's the best of the 3. Meanwhile the 918 is best till 100mph and the LaFerrari is best nowhere, neither around tracks nor in straights. But still the most desirable tho!
So disappointed that before making this video, no one, not one person involved was smart enough to consider the top speed limiter on the bike and how to over come that obstacle temporarily for this test, hands down with rev extender and top speed eliminator, the bike would have continued to accelerate
Hmm, I doubt it. Bikes have pretty poor aerodynamics. Anything over that would require a lot more power. Bike totally won in terms of grins per buck, though.
04m6gto sport bikes not only have rev limiters they are required to have a top speed limiter, rev limiters can be extended with ECU flashing/PCV mods, but top speed limiters have to be ECU flashed out as an option. Do some research “google top speed limiter” on sport bikes, modern bikes have top speed limiters that is directly connected speed sensors used for items like traction control, and ABS. You can also search in youtube and see mods where top speed limiters were removed. I myself have extended the rev limiter on all my bikes that have a PCV, I have not had the ECU flashed to remove the top speed as in my area, it is impossible to get near the top speed. If you take the time to search in youtube you can also find videos showing you people having the top speed limiter removed although for most, they will never come near that. This top speed limiter is required on all liter bikes to be street legal, not sure when they started doing this but if it has ABS and traction control, it has a top speed limiter if it is over 1000cc sport bike

You obviously don’t understand, in EU and the US you are not allowed to sell bikes over 1000cc without a top speed limiter, and i am not your bud.
It was up to its rev limiter in top gear, so basically it could not go any faster even if the limiter was removed (unless you fancy blowing up the engine i guess)

Actually more stable the faster you go, to a certain speed anyways. Unless you turn the bars or hit something these bikes are stable as hell. Just takes brass nuts to do that speed. I hit 150mph on my Triumph and it was like I was doing 200 lol. The wind force was nuts.
The bike was set back by the front wheel lifting at the first 3 gears. The driver could not rev as much as he wanted to. Once that problem went away the bike outran them both. That is up to the point where it didn't...
Problem with the porsche is it's electric motors...other video/magazines that tested it found out that the electric motors decouples at about 146mph. So from that speed up it only has 608hp. I'm waiting for the Koenigsegg Regera;-)
Remember that launching the cars requires absolutely no experience whatsoever; you just sit on a comfy seat and press a pedal with your foot and the car does the rest, the 0-60 time has nothing to do with your skill level, which means absolutely no sense of accomplishment whatsoever. On the other hand, launching such a monstrous bike without having it flip multiple times in the air requires many years of riding experience, giving you tremendous satisfaction when achieved correctly. Sports and hyper cars are frankly uses... if you want satisfaction buy a sports bike, and if you want to show off your wealth then just buy a Rolls-Royce or a Maybach. Hell, even a 50cc scooter will give you a better adrenaline rush than a hypercar.
Realistically then, round a track It'll be the bike or the 918, since the P1 didn't catch up until 120ish, which you aren't going to do all that much of on track.
or realistically, the 918 was able to get ahead due to standing start. You don't enter every straight on a track with a standing start now do you? :b And yes, the P1 did close the gap before 120, it just only surpassed at 120 due to the awd headstart of the 918.
it would depend on the sort of track. A car on a circuit like nurburgring will win from any bike i think, but a car on a bike track the cars would lose. Look at TT Assen times and Car racing times at Assen and you can see what i mean
yep. i see people buying porche way more than other supercars because it has a back seat, decent fuel consumption for that kind of car, 4x4, storage space, comfort, speed and it's easy to drive. you can use it as a day by day car.

All motorcycles of that caliber are either limited or the speedo goes to N/A because of an agreement between manufacturers so there aren’t laws put in place to stop them from making the “fastest” street motorcycle.
Autocar could not ask any private owner to give their LaF because Ferrari said if autocar does that, Ferrari will no longer allow them to test any of their media cars in the future (almost like that)

We can add LaFerrari here too, because it raced against The Bugatti Veyron in this same location recently in VMAX200 (there are LaFerrari vs Bugatti videos floating around TH-cam if you want to watch). Top Speed wise: LaFerrari: 207 mph McLaren P1: 204.7 mph Porsche 918: 194.64 mph Please Autocar, do some track times now!
LaFerrari and Veyron were raced with passengers unlike video here. The SS model would provide a better match. Released figures of base model put it behind after 100 easily.
Bear in mind the bike in question here is making better than 220 hp and weighs in at 150 kilos with a rider who weighs another 50 kg..so the bike’s power to weight ratio is better than 1-1...you do the math🧐
1:25 JEEEEEEEEEEEEZ the 918 can pull O_O ...and wtf to the comparison itself, srsly brits again putting themselves in the lead: 1. he didn't use the launch control in the 918 as you can (not) hear. normally the engine revs to about 4000rpm before launching. but he started from idle rpm. 2. the 918 as you can see at 3:07 is at 150mph when the bike overtakes it. the mclaren comes even later. at 3:18 you can see the p1 is about 10 meters in the lead, but the 918 already was at 195mph there. not wondering the p1 is quicker on the standing mile, though a shame for mclaren they couldn't even barely accelerate the car as fast as mclaren says. and that is the big topic: mclaren overrates their car numbers, whereas porsche (always did and always will) underrate their cars.
Launch control or not this surface doesn't allow 918 to have it's 4WD full advantage. The video is only from 1 run. There were 3 runs from what I saw on a forum. Every run had different times. Mr. Steve is said to be posting how all was done here soon. Last I checked all claimed number were slower then what was claimed.. I already knew 918 wasn't doing this 2.2 0-60 here. Many in the 918 crowd really thought that last P1 video by Mr. Steve proved the Porsche was faster. The test proved the 918 carries it's high torque only so far like the Ring video show all. Porsche could have installed a 2 gear E-motor instead of 1 gr in video. Of course there are compromises and tradeoffs. Weight would have went up even farther. A bigger battery also needed to help sustain such massive torque to maybe 180 or so. More cooing and electronics aids just add more to the weight issue. Had they did all I stated , this car would have been around 2 tons with all fluids. If you want a Mclaren to blow by this Porsche. The P1 GTR is coming with the F1 ERS system they didn't install in normal P1. A push of a button and 918 in the rear view at any rpm.

CrimnlBT I'm not comparing them in any way. The P1 GTR is just a reference point. Basically the P1 is a detuned version of the Track model. The street model is no longer the top model in Mclaren. My point is many crying oh P1 should have blown past 918 which is false. The P1 GTR has ERS system to do such. Of course no video or test have come out yet but the specs do suggest it. Nothing against the 918 it held on the whole race. Porsche should be proud of a great product. Just maybe they might get in this track model stuff.

How is the 918 less in power?? The Porsche can only hold all that 250+ torque advantage till 145+. After such speed front E-motor cuts out rendering it to around 750hp and 740 tq. P1 is 903hp and 918 is actually 887 not 875 because Porsche did some more tuning late last yr. Even delayed deliveries unlike Mclaren to do such tune.

Going fast in a straight line on a bike isn't hard. Getting off the line in a tidy manner is tricky but all you need to do then is tuck in and hold on (and most fast bikes have traction now anyway) TT, of course but that's not a drag race. Racing in a car is also highly skilled.
@Michael Pullins Sorry but that is false. Just because you use traction control does not mean you cant ride. I know owners of superdukes, s1000rr's, R1s, Zx10r's, and for the road they almost always at least have their bikes on a low tc setting.

Why is Ferrari such a bad sport when it comes to lending cars for comparative tests....they even prevented Top Gear from having a head to head with the P1/918 when they had all 3 in the studio.
McLaren and Porsche are just like 'lol go ahead', they're comfortable with their cars being compared to incredibly good rivals and they know people will still pay millions for them regardless of which one is a few milliseconds faster around a race track.

About 10 days ago, i had to jump of the street because a woman in a car thought she should ignore the traffic laws (if thats the right word for the rules that say when you are allowed to drive and when you have to wait).

that the 918 takes longer to get to 200 is because after 250Km/h (155mp/h) the front electric motor disengages from the wheels. it does so because unlike the rear electric motor it doesn't have a gearbox between it and the frontwheels so it would keep spinning fatster and fatster wich could damage or destroy it. And so after 250km/h the 918 is missing 125hp and thats why it takes longer to get to 200

You also need to read or listen as the race was first to 200mph! The bikes gears topped out at 192mph hitting max revs which is when the P1 took over and hit 200 mph before the bike could wind up the other 8mph, so with a longer last year the bike could win but then your modifying it so you could also modify the P1 and then where do you stop? Obviously there are bikes and cars out there that can destroy these but you have to heavily modify them whereas all 3 of these are stock!
Martyn Dyson It didn't top out. Motorbike manufacturers put a 6th gear RPM limiter on sports bikes to restrict how fast they can go. For instance my old Hayabusa can go over 200mph because I put a Power Commander on it, with fools the ECU in thinking it's still in 5th gear.. so the limiter doesn't kick in and it's free to go. And no.. I haven't gone that fast with it. No highways around here safe enough to try it and 155mph was scary enough for me.

A bike is no doubt the most efficient way of high-performance transportation but it totally sucks in the wet/cold in comparison. For the summer it's the ideal choice if you aren't carrying people around or worrying about your clothes/hair being messed up on the way to the destination.

None of these cars are simple by any means, but the Ferrari is definitely the most simple of the 3. Less was required to meet the goals in making the car. And they sold/made less cars and sold them all on the "Ferrari" name alone, no one outside of Ferrari drove them until they shipped out. As for the "dick waving", I think its completely necessary. How do you get potential buyers, future customers, etc excited about your cars and brand? Now, currently over the past few years especially, we've been seeing this "bitchassness" from Ferrari with tuning cars before giving them to press, never letting people drive them outside Marenello, and even being asses with owners...I think its going to bite them in the ass, soon. If the bike had another gearing it would do it in way under 25sec i've Seen regular bmw' s1000rr doing it under 25sec and they're much slower then a panigale superleggera.. But those BMW has changed sprockets so they can accelerate for 1 mile this bike was hitting 190 mph in 1km or 0.7 miles lol.. So re gear it and it would never been Seen AGAIN

LaFerrari weight figures have been creeping out. It is not much lighter then the P1 like all have been claiming. So the Mclaren does have a small chance due to a smaller package. I think LaFerrari is carrying more in CD vs the P1.
The Ferrari is slightly stronger but all the numbers seem to even out.
The Top Gear test had them even at 100 so all is inline here.

That was odd too, but I feel like they should have done more runs. Even the older GTR, Lambo and 911 Turbo S can get under 2.9 seconds to 60, so this made these cars look slower than I expected.

topgear print magazine tested both already and ... the 918 destroyed the P1 in corner speed by lightyears... the tester took a corner with the P1 at 130mph and nearly lost it... he took the corner with the 918 several times with increasing speed... he runs out of big enough balls at 160mph....

On accepted/used straight line racing terms Bike won. Cars are fast boxes and have their strengths, but bikes (from consensus below) are for those with real balls.

At 150mph the 918 disengages its front motor which is why the acceleration is reduced.

I'm not aware of any track in the world with a mile of straight so I'm pretty sure this all adds up to the bike having the most usable speed. Oh and you can also get something reasonably close to the Superleggera for what you'd pay for tires on the 918 and P1...
Until it hit its rev limiter and the cars started to catch up - the P1 ultimately overtook it. 5:59 he says 'The P1 was king'. Stop kidding yourself - the bike lost.

The fact the bike matched the two cars off the line while managing wheelie effect is immense, what a rider!. Even as a biker myself, it still astonishes me that both a P1 and 918 at full tilt are going backwards from the rear camera on the bike. And to only be caught by the P1 because it ran out of gearing is mind blowing, give it an extra gear and that Ducati would probably just keep going at the same pace.

Gotta give credit to the P1 for straight line performances over 130mph. It's the best of the 3. Meanwhile the 918 is best till 100mph and the LaFerrari is best nowhere, neither around tracks nor in straights. But still the most desirable tho!

So disappointed that before making this video, no one, not one person involved was smart enough to consider the top speed limiter on the bike and how to over come that obstacle temporarily for this test, hands down with rev extender and top speed eliminator, the bike would have continued to accelerate
Hmm, I doubt it. Bikes have pretty poor aerodynamics. Anything over that would require a lot more power. Bike totally won in terms of grins per buck, though.
I think the point is to compare both cars and bike as stock. Not with mods added
04m6gto sport bikes not only have rev limiters they are required to have a top speed limiter, rev limiters can be extended with ECU flashing/PCV mods, but top speed limiters have to be ECU flashed out as an option. Do some research “google top speed limiter” on sport bikes, modern bikes have top speed limiters that is directly connected speed sensors used for items like traction control, and ABS. You can also search in youtube and see mods where top speed limiters were removed. I myself have extended the rev limiter on all my bikes that have a PCV, I have not had the ECU flashed to remove the top speed as in my area, it is impossible to get near the top speed. If you take the time to search in youtube you can also find videos showing you people having the top speed limiter removed although for most, they will never come near that. This top speed limiter is required on all liter bikes to be street legal, not sure when they started doing this but if it has ABS and traction control, it has a top speed limiter if it is over 1000cc sport bike

It was up to its rev limiter in top gear, so basically it could not go any faster even if the limiter was removed (unless you fancy blowing up the engine i guess)

Actually more stable the faster you go, to a certain speed anyways. Unless you turn the bars or hit something these bikes are stable as hell. Just takes brass nuts to do that speed. I hit 150mph on my Triumph and it was like I was doing 200 lol. The wind force was nuts.
The bike was set back by the front wheel lifting at the first 3 gears. The driver could not rev as much as he wanted to. Once that problem went away the bike outran them both. That is up to the point where it didn't...

Problem with the porsche is it's electric motors...other video/magazines that tested it found out that the electric motors decouples at about 146mph. So from that speed up it only has 608hp. I'm waiting for the Koenigsegg Regera;-)

Remember that launching the cars requires absolutely no experience whatsoever; you just sit on a comfy seat and press a pedal with your foot and the car does the rest, the 0-60 time has nothing to do with your skill level, which means absolutely no sense of accomplishment whatsoever. On the other hand, launching such a monstrous bike without having it flip multiple times in the air requires many years of riding experience, giving you tremendous satisfaction when achieved correctly. Sports and hyper cars are frankly uses... if you want satisfaction buy a sports bike, and if you want to show off your wealth then just buy a Rolls-Royce or a Maybach. Hell, even a 50cc scooter will give you a better adrenaline rush than a hypercar.

it would depend on the sort of track. A car on a circuit like nurburgring will win from any bike i think, but a car on a bike track the cars would lose. Look at TT Assen times and Car racing times at Assen and you can see what i mean

The bike needed to run a taller final gear and it wouldn't of hit the rev limiter.
All motorcycles of that caliber are either limited or the speedo goes to N/A because of an agreement between manufacturers so there aren’t laws put in place to stop them from making the “fastest” street motorcycle.

...and wtf to the comparison itself, srsly brits again putting themselves in the lead:
1. he didn't use the launch control in the 918 as you can (not) hear. normally the engine revs to about 4000rpm before launching. but he started from idle rpm.
2. the 918 as you can see at 3:07 is at 150mph when the bike overtakes it. the mclaren comes even later. at 3:18 you can see the p1 is about 10 meters in the lead, but the 918 already was at 195mph there.
not wondering the p1 is quicker on the standing mile, though a shame for mclaren they couldn't even barely accelerate the car as fast as mclaren says. and that is the big topic: mclaren overrates their car numbers, whereas porsche (always did and always will) underrate their cars.
Launch control or not this surface doesn't allow 918 to have it's 4WD full advantage.
The video is only from 1 run. There were 3 runs from what I saw on a forum. Every run had different times. Mr. Steve is said to be posting how all was done here soon.
Last I checked all claimed number were slower then what was claimed.. I already knew 918 wasn't doing this 2.2 0-60 here. Many in the 918 crowd really thought that last P1 video by Mr. Steve proved the Porsche was faster.
The test proved the 918 carries it's high torque only so far like the Ring video show all. Porsche could have installed a 2 gear E-motor instead of 1 gr in video. Of course there are compromises and tradeoffs. Weight would have went up even farther. A bigger battery also needed to help sustain such massive torque to maybe 180 or so.
More cooing and electronics aids just add more to the weight issue. Had they did all I stated , this car would have been around 2 tons with all fluids.
If you want a Mclaren to blow by this Porsche. The P1 GTR is coming with the F1 ERS system they didn't install in normal P1. A push of a button and 918 in the rear view at any rpm.

Basically the P1 is a detuned version of the Track model. The street model is no longer the top model in Mclaren.
My point is many crying oh P1 should have blown past 918 which is false. The P1 GTR has ERS system to do such. Of course no video or test have come out yet but the specs do suggest it.
Nothing against the 918 it held on the whole race. Porsche should be proud of a great product. Just maybe they might get in this track model stuff.

How is the 918 less in power?? The Porsche can only hold all that 250+ torque advantage till 145+. After such speed front E-motor cuts out rendering it to around 750hp and 740 tq. P1 is 903hp and 918 is actually 887 not 875 because Porsche did some more tuning late last yr. Even delayed deliveries unlike Mclaren to do such tune.
