Hey guys! I hope you like this one. A little different than what I usually do, but I think it will be helpful! Let me know what you think about posting on a Monday afternoon. TH-cam says that is when the biggest group of my subscribers in online so I thought I would try it out.
Great reminder for me to take some clippings for indoors during the winter
Perfect!
That's an excellent idea about starting some to keep indoors for the winter!! I'll do just that! Thanks for the video
You're Welcome!
I unsuccessfully tried to do this on my own.
Finally i tried your method and cut the stem near the leaf - It worked like magic! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I'm glad! Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial, Rick! 👍
Your comments at the very beginning are probably the most important IMO. Grow mint in containers, because it WILL spread vigorously, and before you know it will take over your entire yard. Many herbs in the mint family are like this...oregano, thyme, lemon balm to name a few. If you plant in the ground be sure to surround them with some sort of barrier(metal or plastic) 12" deep to prevent roots from sprawling. They also tend to self seed readily, so stay on top of harvesting when they're flowering.
I need to do this so I can have a pot of it in my house over the winter!
I love mint! Thanks for the tutorial! I will reach out to my friends for a few cuts of mint!
Awesome! Thank you!
This was a good video great job 🎉🎉
I assume the same process applies to propagating catnip. Thank you so much for a nice, informative video ‼️
I have the same scissors ✂️ thanks , great tutorial 😂
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Awesome from Jim’s wife Gods good me and my husband are not good these videos help some thank u
I bought a small pot of chocolate mint and started rooting some cuttings 4 days ago. And the cuttings are already rooting! It's ridiculous! I never had a plant root so fast. The runners are even faster rooting than the regular stems, it's crazy.
Yep! That's why you should always plant mint in a container, other wise it will get away from you quickly!
I have a mint plant and the stems were so skinny and fragile and I pruned it and now the stems are coming thicker and strong
I love mints
Nice video! Once I master this propagation technique, what next herb would you recommend? I have tried a few cuttings but they failed.
I’ve seen some say put a baggie over plant to help along. Do you find it necessary? Help to root faster?
Hi, how many times do I water the plant. Thxs
Keep the water level high in the jar so roots develop well and change the water about ever 5 days.
Can you leave the container of mint outside during winter? I’m in zone 6/7, with a three sided patio n
I haven't had good luck leaving them outside. Any time I do I end up loosing the plants. You migth have better luck with the protection of the patio.
Does it matter what water I use? Like can i use tap water or purified water?
No the water doesn't really matter.
Are you to only use Terre Cotta pots?
No any pot will do, that is just what we had open at the time. We have a much bigger one that we are going to put the 5 starts in.
I have some mint that l brought from morocco about 2 years ago. I was able to plant it using the same method. However, now the leaves are growing smaller and do not seem to grow bigger any more. Is there anything l should do so that the leaves can grow larger? Thank you.
Are you going them in a pot? I'm wondering if they need a little organic fertilizer.
Should it be in a sunny window
Yes that will help.
After placing in pot, should i water everyday for a few weeks? or let it go?
If they are indoors they won't need every day water. Keep the soil moist and they will be fine. If outside you will want to be more careful with the water.
Does it matter what time of the year you do this. Was just gifted some mint cuttings.
No you can do it any time of the year.
I have a problem when i do that and put the cutting in water the leaves turn black and die
Should I spray water on its leaves ???
No, just keep the water level high in the jar.
What type of stem should we use, the green stem which is the younger or the darker colour stems which are the older ones? Can I also propagate other type of mints in the similar manner which u shown here? Thank u for this video..
When taking cuttings to propagate mint, it's best to use the green, young stems rather than the brown, woody stems.
Here's why:
1. Green stems:
- The green, succulent stems are more likely to root successfully.
- They have a higher water content and more actively growing nodes, which will produce new roots.
- Green stems are more flexible and pliable, making them easier to work with when taking cuttings.
2. Avoid brown stems:
- The brown, woody stems are more mature and have a lower water content.
- They are less likely to root well, as the tissues are more lignified and less receptive to rooting.
- Brown stems can be brittle and prone to drying out, which reduces the chances of successful propagation.
When taking mint cuttings:
- Select the young, green stems that are 4-6 inches long, just below a set of leaves.
- Make a clean, angled cut just below a leaf node, as this is where the new roots will emerge.
- Remove the lower leaves, leaving only the top 2-3 sets of leaves.
- Plant the cuttings in a well-draining potting mix or rooting medium.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the rooting process.
With the right conditions, the green mint cuttings should root within 2-4 weeks, allowing you to transplant them and grow new mint plants.
Avoid using the brown, woody stems, as they are less likely to root successfully and establish new, healthy plants.
@@Zekeblox2773 thank u so much for this vital information. Very much appreciated! 🙏
@@Zekeblox2773can this method of choosing green & younger stems as compared to the brown colour & older stems be applied to other type of herbs like oregano, rosemary, basil & etc.. so that rootings become easier & quicker ??
Yes this method works with a lot of herbs, using green stems also helps because the green stems tend to grow more as well
@@Zekeblox2773 thank u so much for your guidance.. 🙏
I have had mint in a pot for many years but 1. It's never makes it through the winter? 2. Throughout the summer the leaves get smaller and smaller? Why?
PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME!!! I have mint sitting in water, I change the water every other day if not almost every day and im so excited a few of my mint cutting are getting beautiful little baby white roots but all the leaves on top are whilting and dying but every day the roots get bigger! Am I putting it in too much light? Does this just kinda happen? Will my mint still grow even though my leaves look dry and horrible but the roots look healthy and beautiful!?!?!?!? PLEASE HELP!!! BTW first time trying to grow mint from cuttings!
Try growing it in the morning sun area. Mine grows well where I have Morning sun n the leaves grow to over 2” long. I put in my used tea leaves n other water that is used for washing vegetables. The mint n flower plants just thrives. The pot is kept on the railing of the patio. Hope this helps!!
I tried this with store bought mint they just wither and die next day

@@StoneyAcresGardening I stand corrected, it didn’t show up for a while. I guess it had to pass the YT test of democracy first…even if/when the content creators aren’t censoring, YT definitely is. As a matter of fact they will hand over commenters names etc… if the gov. Three letter agencies want it ….you know if you say the wrong things take the incorrect political stance, watch how it amps up as we get closer to November
This could have been a two minute short and sweet tutorial, but seems some creators love to hear themselves talk and talk , we don’t need to hear you think out loud…” I’m coming near the camera “ …etc. 😖
Thanks for listening
The thing you have to understand about this is TH-cam is all about how long the video is watched. They promote videos more if they are longer than 6 to 8 minutes. So a lot of us "creators" have to add some additional information on simple subjects so that TH-cam will show the video to more people.
I thought the video was great.
it's not tiktok, it's going to be a longer video. He provided more information than I received in other videos.
