We have had a scented rose bush, pink/white mix, in the family for over 200 years, all the family have taken cuts for decades, and the roses are blooming in my families gardens throughout Ireland.
Oh my goodness, what a blessing . I have some family buried in Cork, Ireland. Would love to visit one day and would love to know what is the name of your rose? 🙂❤

That's so awesome Diana! Glad to hear you've been very successful with this method. It's a lot of fun isn't it? I've got another of these rose videos that will be out in a couple weeks. I love rooting these roses.
Also as a handy little note... The bottoms that you cut off your drink bottles can also be re-used as a seedling container. Just pop a few drainage holes in the bottom, add growing medium of your choice, and voila! Seed trays. Nothing wasted! 😊 Happy growing and God bless everyone.
Mike, I'm just seeing this and how excited I was to see it. My mother-in-law - way back in 1968 - taught me about rooting rose cuttings. She simply would trim the branch as you did, trim the thorns, dip it in the power root tone and "stick it in the ground with a jar over it". She had a spot just outside her kitchen door where her "babies started". She would watch the day, and if it was cloudy and coolish, she'd leave the jar as it was. If it was bright sunshine, she'd raise the jar on flat stones or such until nightfall. It never failed. Two years ago, I discovered an ancient climbing rose in our bushes, totally overgrown with monkey grass and such. I was thrilled! I dug it up, placed it in a showy spot and kept it watered. It grew wonderfully last year, no flowers, but great bush development. This year, right now, it's covered in buds. And it has the most wonderful "old climbing rose" scent. As the flowers fade, I will try some transplants...because...who ever has "enough"?? Thank you for your video!
I love that you are sharing a plain and simply way to take cuttings. I'm in the UK and the cost of living crisis means I cannot afford the luxury of buying loads of new plants. This video is an inspiration.
"... and what do you do with the flowers? You take them inside for your wife" AWWW! I had to pause the video and just comment on how wholesome and loving the delivery of that was. I'm watching this video because I want to take cuttings from a rose plant called Shiela's Perfume, it has the same name as my aunt who passed away last year. She had Down Syndrome and died in her 40s. I wanted to take the cuttings and grow plants to give to all of her siblings (my uncles and my mom), she was the youngest of four. Thank you for sharing this video and having an amazing attitude. Your video was the first one that showed in the results when I typed in the search, and I'm glad I clicked on it. Happy growing!
I'm glad you're here too! It's so cool to hear that you want to spread that one rose plant around to family. This is very real and possible and I wish you much success. I'll be putting out another rose video, that I've been working on, in the coming weeks. Good luck!
You are the only garden you tuber who is easy on pocket. Love the way you use waste material in growing plants. I already feel like I am going to get rich by propagating my plants and saving money.
Thank you so much for this. I am growing 8 rose bushes from my grandma's roses. She has been gone over 37 years and my dad hasn't been able to get them to grow. He is on the last bush that they had. Thanks to you, we are going to more and more. They are the old type so the perfume is amazing. Thanks Mate. !!!! From Australia.
Glad you found the video! I wish you a ton of success and hopefully you can keep this one in the family for generations to come. I've got lots of other rose rooting videos too if you need to see more details. Here's one of them: th-cam.com/video/aa4zgUkXNlE/w-d-xo.html
Lost my Mom 3 years ago. She had a gorgeous, fragrant rose bush. I've tried twice to take cuttings. After watching this, I'm excited to try your method & I'm praying for success! Thank you so much‼️💞
I didn't know you could do this. My grandmother has a rose bush from my late great grandmother. She does all she can to keep it thriving, but now I can take a piece from it and have my OWN?????? I am so excited! I can't wait to show her this.
You absolutely can do this! Just follow the steps. I've got many videos on rose cuttings if you're interested. Here's the most comprehensive rose cutting video I've made: th-cam.com/video/y_1fUrMhCpg/w-d-xo.html Good luck Shannon, and I wish you and your grandmother the best of luck!
So dang precious that Mike includes his daughters in his gardening. Those learning and sharing experiences set the stage for not only memories, but skills they will keep for a lifetime. Reminds me of my dad 60 years ago when I was little. Proverbs 22:6.
Roses are my favorite flower. I just started trying to grow them last Spring. A year later, I have 9 plants, all a different color. Now, I will attempt to grow some off of what I have. Thank you for making this easier and less scary to do!
You're welcome. I love the fragrance this variety has. If you can find a 'Blue Girl' get it. Here's another more comprehensive rose rooting video: th-cam.com/video/y_1fUrMhCpg/w-d-xo.html
I watched this video, planted cuttings last Summer and almost every one of them rooted. One rose "stick" not only routed but even bloomed this Spring! So I've got 8 more rose bushes! Thank you for your instructions and excitement about gardening.
at first, when I saw the video was 28 mins long, I thought I'd just 'dip' into it - but, NO, I watched it from start to finish. It was so interesting and helpful and I just love your presentation and simple explanations. Thank you very much.
My Grandpa taught me how to garden and I love it! He planted roses 33 years ago and he would cut them and bring them in every few days for my Grandma. She passed a few years ago and he passed last year. I can't wait to propagate those after seeing this, thank you! ❤
So, I was taught to “poke a hole in the dirt FIRST….then put the stem in, and cover it up……because if you shove it down into the dirt, as the stem goes in, the dirt pulls off the rooting powder…..so very little is around the bottom.
The key is rooting hormone. After removing the thorns, I go even further by lightly scaping the lower end of the stem to encourage more roots from the "wound". Also, I have made new plants by planting them directly into the ground and not using a plastic cover. Here in NY state, I have done this in the fall when weather is not hot anymore and it is relatively cool, but still weeks from a frost. By spring, the cutting is established and has new growth sprouting. Everyone should try to make cuttings of roses, especially if you have an heirloom rose bush! 🌹
Thanks for mentioning that about the cuttings in fall. Once the wood is more hardened off, it can hold up well without as much humidity. I agree, everyone should be doing this!
Mike: I enjoy your excitement and enthusiasm for growing plants. I am an old gardener, been at it for over 40 years and I love growing flowers, vegetables, and shrubs. Good video, with enough detail to duplicate what you are doing. That is how I make my gardening videos, with enough detail so folks can duplicate what I do. Thanks and take care. OAG
Hey, you answered my questions.. I have 20 "Friesia" roses in my garden along the road.. And they bring a lot of love to the people passing by with their color and smell..
Thank you!! This video is nothing but amazing! I've successfully rooted 3 cuttings, all 3 have new growth already! I just planted 3 more cuttings today and I'm confident they will root too!
Thank you so much! I used your technique on my mom's roses and one from my sister. I did it last August, left them in pots in the ground thru a hard winter, and planted them in April. One has a flower coming, ☺️. Now, I am making starts from a rose I bought my granddaughter when she was small. I'm so excited! Thank you!!
This was so unbelievably helpful! I tried this with one of our more rare park-roses, and it worked like a charm! I even went as far as to try this method with other kinds of cuttings, like Honeysuckle, and they too rooted very quickly. I even planted the latter in a transparent orchid pot just to see the roots develop, and they were visible within 2 weeks!
I used this exact method a year ago from a clipping I got from my neighbor, and now I have my very own French Rose bush! Smells great. Thank you for the informative and easy to follow video series, Mike!
I can’t remember who said it, but, I love the quote “don’t be mad that a rose bush has thorns... be happy that a thorn bush has roses”. I learned a lot from this! Roses are in my future! Hope you’re healing up well! 🌹
This is the most straightforward and complete rooting class I've ever watched ! So easy to understand all the whys and hows! Just perfect for me! Ive always wanted to try but have been too scared to do. After watching this , I think I'm confident enough to try it out. So, thank you! 👍👍👍
Ikr, my friend who first told me about the beauty David Austen roses, and showed me pics of hundreds of them, she has most of them, said her husband cares for them. I was *sigh* I weakened my back this year trying to move them around in pots on the sack truck 😅 Imagine having a man doing all that, I'd think I'd won the lotto haha!
Great info and enthusiasm, lovely to see your girls joining in. So moving to hear people talking about roses that have been in their family for years. Thank you.
I think that may have been my very favorite part of the entire video! Just maybe the reason why I decided to try it on my own. I love flowers! However, I'm better with plants. Hope this works
Can't wait to try this. I have a rose bush that belonged to my Mom, and I live in fear of losing it to winter kill. I'm going to propagate the heck out of it so it will live on and can eventually grow in the gardens of my brother, daughter, nephew and niece. Thanks so much for the great video!
Omg I've watching your videos over and over. Last year I tried propagating crepe myrtles and fail on my face. I found your channel a month or so ago.. I've tried everything you were doing..... A TOTAL SUCCESS.. ROOTS EVERYWHERE.. You are a great teacher... I've got a lot of varieties rooting thanks to you... Thank you
This was a fantastic step by step process on generating rose cuttings. Definitely worth watching and a permanent addition to my you tube library. Thank you.
These rose cuttings rooted amazingly fast, very impressive. I love seeing your wonderful little helpers and I'm sure they are loving spending time with dad. Now I think I have to root some roses too ...I've already got the rooting hormone! Thanks for the very informative video Mike, you have totally given me the propagation bug (it's extremely contagious)!
I have rooted roses from cuttings successfully over the years. I never leave so many leaves and I never let the leaves touch the sides of the cover due to potential fungus. I have also set them straight into the garden to root with a cover. I enjoyed the video.
I love your excitement!!! When I am teaching someone about a particular gardening technique, I feel the same. I can hear the excitement in my voice! I love to share!!!! Carry on!
Thank you for instructions on rose cuttings which i will try. i had 80% success with Fig cuttings which I was so pleased with and was able to give cuttings to a number of friends.Your video's are clear and fun to watch. John Malachowski Nr Cambridge England
How wonderful to be able to grow your own Rose's! I've never seen the process before but it was fascinating to see. Your helpers are daring and so smart! What a great Father and gardener. Thanks for sharing.
Mike: Thanks for all the detailed info. I planted a tea rose last year and the blooms this year are amazing. It was one of only a couple of plants that made it through our two weeks straight of 105 degree weather and continued to bloom in spit of it. I was surfin' these videos to find out how to take cuttings so I could grow more. Your video was the best, most thorough video I have found. I got my jugs cut, filled with potting soil and water and will proceed to my cuttings and plantings in the morning. Thanks again.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. I started propagating my roses in November in NY just for fun by following your steps and currently, I have had a 25% success rate! Not bad for a newbie during a chilly winter. So happy and proud!
You guys who freak out over plants being treated in such a manner should watch some videos on bonsai. You should see the way you can split trees in half and do the same with their root balls to create two trees and other such extreme operations. I know some plants are more sensitive than others but most can take a whole lot of 'abuse' and just go on thriving. You just need to know what a plant can't handle so you don't cross that threshold. Your videos are great by the way. Thanks. May Christ Jesus bless and keep you and yours.
Thank you Mike! I followed your tips and I successfully propagated 3 roses from stems! After about 3 to 4 months, one of them actually produced a rose! The roots are great and I can't wait to plant them outside. I think I might do this every year! Thank so much for taking the time to share your wisdom with us!
I run trails regularly and love everything, anything that brings flowers in my garden. My store bought roses, about 12 of them sit majestically along the driveway. For 25 years I’ve attempted to grow them. After this fantastic video, I really think I can. Will update in a couple of months. Thank you so very much ! Sonny
Thank you for this tutorial, i’ve followed it step by step and i’m now 1 week into Propagating my late grandmother’s roses, i’ve got a great build up of Humidity, i’m in Sydney Australia so it’s summer here. Thank you and fingers crossed it all goes well.
Mike Kincaid i’m happy to say 7 weeks later and i’ve repotted my ROOTED roses! 3 out of my 4 stems made it. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your tutorial! I could not have done this without you.
Oh my gosh ty Mike. After only 1 week my rose cuttings have new growth coming off the stem. This means the world to me. Wish I could send you a picture
I remember living at Carolina Beach, NC. I had some fantastic roses on one end of the porch but nothing at the other. I cut a few branches of each bush and just stuck them in the ground on the empty side. No root tone just sandy soil. They all took, stayed true to color and flourished beautifully! Great video, cool family!
thank you, Mike and girls! I loved every bit. Most of all, your enthusiasm is contagious! Must follow for more smiles and wonderful information. I'm so excited as i start to add roses to my garden and learn how to care for these garden gems.
Thank you Mike, for making a wonderful video! I have been wanting to root cuttings from my own rose bushes, but did not know how until I learned from you. You're a great teacher!
love your video. years ago i started my roses by putting them under large glass milk containers and was very sucessful . thank you for bringing back your propagation techniques for rose rooting.
How do you vent the milk container We get half gal milk in rectangular glass containers, i have one that I would like to try on a rose my Gramma gave me in 1972. She has gone to Heaven but the rose is,still going strong in a container,. I never planted it in the ground bec i never wanted to leave it when and if i moved. But now Im not planning on moving anywhere so it would be great to have a few rooted in the ground
Thank you so much for this video! This is literally the only video I found on rose cuttings that actually shows how to make the cuttings! Also, it's so great to see you get your kiddos involved. My daughter also really enjoys helping to take care of our plants. Just one question for you - how do you over-winter those roses? Do you bring them indoors? Do you plant them in the ground in fall? How do they stand up to winter?
So glad you enjoyed the video! I just leave these roses in my hoophouse through the winter. It's not heated and both ends are open so they go dormant and freeze hard as a rock. As long as the plants you're working with are cold hardy to your area, you should be ok leaving them outside. If you live in an exceptionally cold climate then you can put them in a shed or garage for protection but keep the soil moist.
I think this was the most wonderful and perfect education on how to root roses (and frankly, just about any plant), and presented in such a cool and clear way. Hats off to you sir!
If you liked this video, I made another updated one about roses and posted it yesterday. Here ya go and have fun: th-cam.com/video/y_1fUrMhCpg/w-d-xo.html
I have been trying to propagate roses for years, killing every single one! You showed me today why I failed, and now I have the knowledge to succeed. The great thing is I have a chance to salvage a beautiful rose the gardeners durn neer killed. They left only two stems and cut the rest down past the graft points. Those two stems have new shoots at the hardy stage you spoke about. Since the damage was done to the base of the bush, it is dying and now I have 6 new bushes coming up from the roots.
Mike, this is the first video of yours I've seen. I was attracted by the whole idea of propagating roses (and I have some of those very fragrant purplish pink ones!), and you made it easy! I also LOVE that you have your girls in there gardening with you--if only all families did this, how much better off we'd all be! :-)
I really liked your video, so I tried it with a mini rose bush I already have. TOTAL SUCCESS!!! I now have 3 rose bushes. And they are so healthy and beautiful. It's only been a couple of months so no buds yet but I am taking another cutting tomorrow from a recent bloom....we'll see if it works so well again. Thank you so much.
I did not know if my rose was going to survive being moved from the place where we lived at the time, so I took 6 cutting and put them in potting soil, and 5 of 6 rooted and have doing well for the last almost 29 years. The original plant came from Germany back about 1880, it was my great grandmother who brought them to the USA. And from my understanding from my grandmother said that the her mother said that that rose is a Queen Elizabeth. That makes the original root stock about 140 years or more old.
Love this video not only was it educational I love the fact you're teaching your daughters early but your enthusiasm is totally contagious I'm overjoyed that you have roots LOL
Well I loved your tutorial and also like the fact that you react to people's comments and reply back Really awesome, can't wait to try it out Thank you
Wow, I'm amazed. I had never tried to propagate a rose in any way. I watched this video this past July and decided to see if I could do it. Well, I got the cutting planted and covered with the bottle top and put it underneath the swing on the patio. It gets a little sun every day, but not too much. Kept checking it to see if anything was happening. It seemed to be doing okay, so I stopped checking as often. Yesterday I happened to look (it's late September now) and was amazed. Not only had the cutting taken, the cutting had grown 10 inches and had 9 side shoots off the main stem, and the top had grown up through the open spout of the plastic bottle covering the cutting. Not only that, there is a tiny rose bud right on the top. Wow! Guess I should pick off that bud so the energy can go toward growing the root. Can't wait to plant it. Thanks for such good directions------they work great.
That's so awesome! I love to hear these stories and I'm very happy for you that it rooted well. Great job, Victoria! If you're interested, here's another more comprehensive rose rooting video but it sounds like you've got it figured out: th-cam.com/video/y_1fUrMhCpg/w-d-xo.html

I am so happy I found your channel & I am excited to try to propagate some roses! A friend has a “discontinued“ rose that I’m absolutely in love with, but cannot buy anywhere. I have a bunch of cuttings from her ❤️. Now I am off to the store to find some ‘fine fir bark’!! Not sure what that is but I’m on a mission! Thanks for your great energy and enthusiasm. I think I will be binge watching all your videos 😁😁 🌹🌹
Thanks so much for the nice comment and I'm glad to hear your excitement for rooting your roses! Don't get too focused on the rooting medium. Just make sure it drains well and is inert. Sand will work well too if you can't find the finely ground fir tree bark. For added insurance, you can spray the cuttings and rooting medium with an antifungal spray. Good luck and have fun!
Thank you for teaching us how to root those beauties. I live roses. God bless you and you children. They too grow best when planted with love in God. Keeps them from a lot of pain later. I know, I grew 3 if them.
Mike, you’re a legend!! There’s been a Rose Bush in my family for 70 years and we’ve never been able to get cuttings. This looks like it’s going to work, can’t wait to get on it, thanks mate.

Good for you. 100% of my cutting rot and die. A neighbor who does a lot of gardening took cuttings from my roses and they all died on her also.
Also as a handy little note...
The bottoms that you cut off your drink bottles can also be re-used as a seedling container. Just pop a few drainage holes in the bottom, add growing medium of your choice, and voila! Seed trays.

Unashamed excitements about roses and soda bottles is refreshing
Sounds like you had a wonderful mother-in-law! Glad you enjoyed the video, Joyce!
Joyce Judd ok uh thx in in MN
You can never have enough roses!
Hello Joyce
@@annbryant8096 hi how are you ?
I love that you are sharing a plain and simply way to take cuttings. I'm in the UK and the cost of living crisis means I cannot afford the luxury of buying loads of new plants. This video is an inspiration.
Dude shut up the entire world is poor go to work
Awesome! That's what it's here for. Good luck on your propagation projects.
You may find a group locally of growers that trade cuttings, plants or seeds.
"... and what do you do with the flowers? You take them inside for your wife"
AWWW!
Good, I want to keep it simple and make it easy for you. Yes, you can make extra money doing this, for sure!

Hi Anita
Lost my Mom 3 years ago. She had a gorgeous, fragrant rose bush. I've tried twice to take cuttings. After watching this, I'm excited to try your method & I'm praying for success! Thank you so much‼️💞
😊 YOU GOT THIS !!!
YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL.....
I hope a year on, you had success with your mamas Rose bush cuttings❤

That is the most excitement I have seen over seeing roots growing. lol love it
Roses are my favorite flower.
Thanks for sharing! So glad it worked out for you.
Your excitement most assuredly is infectious (in a good way)!!
at first, when I saw the video was 28 mins long, I thought I'd just 'dip' into it - but, NO, I watched it from start to finish. It was so interesting and helpful and I just love your presentation and simple explanations. Thank you very much.
You are so very welcome, Janet! Glad you enjoyed it and have fun in the garden.
I have been gardening for 38 years and I tell you, Mike, your instinct is right on the spot. Good job!
Thank you so much, Hamideh! That means a lot coming from someone so experienced.
Thanks
My Grandpa taught me how to garden and I love it! He planted roses 33 years ago and he would cut them and bring them in every few days for my Grandma. She passed a few years ago and he passed last year. I can't wait to propagate those after seeing this, thank you! ❤
You're welcome, and good luck with your rose cuttings!
What a sweet story to share, what a wonderful romantic gesture for his wife! ❤️👍😊
Dani Girl, what a treasure you have to cherish from your precious grandpa!!!
🌹👏💖☺️
So, I was taught to “poke a hole in the dirt FIRST….then put the stem in, and cover it up……because if you shove it down into the dirt, as the stem goes in, the dirt pulls off the rooting powder…..so very little is around the bottom.
@@MikeKincaid79 Wow !!!! You talk toooooooooooooooooo much !!!
Does it matter what kind of hormone?
Poo
I have used rooting hormone for my butterfly bush. Thanks for the tip on scaping.
Hello Larry and Mike, would you please be be able to mention the best rooting hormone brand for roses? Thank you so much!
Mike: I enjoy your excitement and enthusiasm for growing plants. I am an old gardener, been at it for over 40 years and I love growing flowers, vegetables, and shrubs. I used your technique on my mom's roses and one from my sister.
I did it last August, left them in pots in the ground thru a hard winter, and planted them in April.

Now, I am making starts from a rose I bought my granddaughter when she was small.

Awesome video, thank you so much. Your children are beautiful. What a good fun Dad you are. All the best from Australia.
Thanks so much, Jools! Hope you guys are having a nice summer down there.
Awesome, glad to hear it!
That was the best gardening video i've ever watched - not only informative, but uplifting!! Thank you Mike - can't wait to try this :)

THANKS SO MUCH!!! I have Roses my grandmother;s family brought from Germany when they moved to America around 1880.
Awesome! I know what you'll be doing this spring!
I loooove bonsais!!!😍

I remember living at Carolina Beach, NC. I had some fantastic roses on one end of the porch but nothing at the other. I cut a few branches of each bush and just stuck them in the ground on the empty side. No root tone just sandy soil. They all took, stayed true to color and flourished beautifully! Great video, cool family!

love your video. years ago i started my roses by putting them under large glass milk containers and was very sucessful . thank you for bringing back your propagation techniques for rose rooting.
You're welcome Dennis. Love the milk container idea. You don't see glass containers anymore, haha.
How do you vent the milk container
We get half gal milk in rectangular glass containers, i have one that I would like to try on a rose my Gramma gave me in 1972.
Thanks so much, Jon! Glad you enjoyed the video.

Glad you've learned something here. Good luck on future propagation projects!
Tried propagating just in water alone , sometimes it works. What you have demonstrated here is fantastic thanks
