  • My final thoughts after two weeks and 1200 with the Nene Ovelarnd Rivolve 2008 Land Rover Defender 110.
    And then I got to try out two of the ultimate, reimagined Land Rover Defender 90 models- both with 5.3 litre V8 engines, 355hp and one with a six speed manual, the other with an eight speed auto.

    I was working for a farmer in the 1980s. He asked me to drive his Land Rover diagonally across a ploughed field to get it back to the farm house. I told him it would get stuck and would never make it. He said "just do it" and it was a piece of cake. What a vehicle!

    Growing up in South Africa, and with a father and uncle being long time landrover club members, I spend 1000s of miles in these vehicles. Numerous club meets, multiple week long REAL expeditions into places like Namibia, the Okavango Delta and not to mention the Maluti mountains where even the Lesotho pony struggles.
    The Landy's greatest strength is not its off road ability or reliability thats for sure !!!!! Its greatest strength is its simplicity and fixability in the middle of nowhere with little more than a hammer, shifting spanner, wire coat hangers , blood and foul language.
    When I was 20, I bought an old Land cruiser .
    I instantly became the black sheep of the family... and their rescue vehicle.

    I've driven 4x4's from plenty of stables, it's true the LR climate control is more of a on\ off switch, holding a conversation can be a chalenge and basic models are pretty agricultural, but I wouldn't be without mine, it's my daily driver, and yes once or twice it's let me down, but there an easy to fix truck, always put a smile on my face. But what my favourite point is they are classless, driven by Royalty, Doctors and the bloke who sweeps the streets, no matter who you are or what you do, you rock up in a Landy and you'll always get a cheerie welcome.

    And there we have it everybody, the British version of Russian roulette. Get a proper English bloke in a tricked out Defender, don't wear seat belt and then floor it (time stamps 25:35 and 30:59). The first thing those superfly Rover coffins need is a seat belt reminder.😄
    Great comparison between the land Rovers👍. All three seem to have character. My pick will be the basic 2008 Defender110. It feels the most authentic and might hold it's value (albeit running the risk of becoming a novelty garage decoration). The other two are just too scary for normal roads, but would be amazing toys for someone willing to handle it. Lots of research before buying, updating to the latest crash tested models and timely maintenance of the vehicles ensures peace of mind and unnecessary expenses.
    Personally, after driving for nearly 30 years and many thousands of kilometers throughout India in a verity of stock and modified cars, I feel vehicles are tools to keep road trips a simple and reliable affair otherwise you run the risk of not enjoying the journey and missing the fleeting scenery.🙏

  • @Duckie313
    @Duckie313 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Defender was my only car for about 15 years, loved every second of it. Even the smallest little outing felt like an adventure. Started in a TD5 110 DCPU, then after a few years upgraded to a 110 SW with more mod-cons, electric windows, heated seats, AC, central locking etc. Only thing I did to it was to add high air intake and some soundproofing. Was a lovely daily driver, and even better for long trips. But... if I was to get a 4x4 again, I wouldn't get the modern Defender. It has become a Range Rover Jr. now, and it lost it's charm. I think Ineos Grenadier did what Land Rover should have done. Basically made a modern "Defender" with all the bells and whistles you'd want out of a utility vehicle. They made a better Defender basically, modern yet utilitarian. Looks aren't as good, but it more than makes up for that in other ways. So yeah, that would be my dream 4x4 now. But I don't think I will ever get one again, I'll burn gas in my motorcycle, and drive electric on 4 wheels. (There are rumors of a fully electric Grenadier coming... that might be interesting.)

    Freddie, great review. When I heard about your experience with trying to listen to the radio I told you about I was disappointed with your experience, in a closed car it has great potential not like the canvas top you had. As for the other two you tested, Welcome to Chevrolet LS Power!😎. I have older versions of that motor, a 5.7 liter in my 98 Corvette with 345 HP, gets 27 mpg on the highway cruising at 70 MPH. The other LS is in my 04 Chevrolet Silverado SS pickup truck, a 6.0 liter at 375 HP with All Wheel Drive. It get 17mpg on the highway at 70 also. My take is save and buy one of the two custom ones, mileage will be better than my truck but who cares when you can scare the daylights out of people with the sound and acceleration. Or, keep the Fiat and but a new bike 🏍️

    I hate to be a negative Nancy on this one Freddie but I think you should stick with the 500 or possibly get a newer 500 with a/c etc. It does exactly what you need and hasn’t cost you much at all in bills. That means more money in your pocket for trips like Bali or an Indian Scout. I also recall you mentioning in a previous video you like the idea of a camper van? 🚐 haha. Could get a camper and back-rack for a Honda Dax! 😂
    From what I’ve seen, fuel guzzling 4x4’s are not holding value well at all these days. Unless a person literally has money to burn, I think those pimped out defenders are really more for celebs who want to show off. That’s just my view of course. Not hating or anything. It's interesting to see your view on these sort of Defenders. I don't necessarily dislike them, but for me they go against the whole appeal of a land rover and I turn my nose up a bit haha
    The older and more used it is the more character it has. The more willing you are to customise it and drill holes to bolt things on; there's so many after market parts you can buy. I can drive through 3 feet deep mud, scrape through bushes or carry a pile of old bricks and moldy wood etc in my old series 3 land rover without worrying, but in one of those Defenders I'd worry about mud on my shoes!
    All the lack of refinement is what makes it fun, giving people a lift is often a hilarious experience for them...
    I think you might find some appeal in something older, say late 80s or 90s. A 90 model or early Defender. As long as it's something that hasn't been neglected for 30 years it will be a fun local runaround or camping trip vehicle.

      This is exactly the argument I have in my mind; long distance comfort and refinement vs raw originality. I can’t argue at all with you- the rugged, roughed up nature that you describe is something I love in Defenders too. I can imagine a Series 3 must be an incredible experience!

    Excellent video Freddie, you definitely have the Landy bug! I get to use a 2006 Defender 90, with the Puma, ( Transit!) engine and it's great, although quite agricultural!!. This last week I have been driving the new Defender and its fab actually...a worthy continuation of the Defender name. I find myself doing ' man maths ' to justify buying one, but the fuel consumption is a worry! On the other hand...what price happiness 😊. Ps, I also had the latest, most bling Discovery for a couple of days , but it's just too flash and definitely a Chelsea tractor! A 'real' Landy was coming towards me and the look of disdain on their face said it all...! Cheers Steve

    That was fun to watch. No experience with Defenders, but imagine that for example a Dodge Ram with a big V8 feels something like that. Had a 1985 TD5 defender short wheel base admittedly a short wheel base in the Lara Croft Benetton grey colour (respayed). Panel gaps atrocious but felt it could go anywhere but the heater was non existent. Was a second car but great to throw the dogs and kids in the back with bench seats either side. Wish I’d kept it but didn’t have the right parking space. On the manoeuvrability get a mirror mounted at the top of the back door looking down so you can see how far away the back is for any obstacles and you’d get away with far fewer turns. As you mentioned likely libel depreciation and probable increase in value to offset running costs. 👍🏻

    I bought a new 1992 Isuzu Trooper in 1992, which cost a fraction of the Defenders, but was a very capable off road 4x4. Shiny metallic blue. I was very proud of it. But my hard core off roading buddies said the Trooper was too nice to take it off road in our Wyoming mountains because I would scratch it up. They said I wouldn’t take it off road. So I took it off road and the tires were more road type tires like those Defenders and not heavy duty lugged tread and I got stuck. And I almost turned it over going down a muddy hill. My friends were right. I didn’t want to hurt my beautiful new 4x4, so I bought a 4 wheeler to go off road and keep my Trooper nice. Then they said I had a Mall Crawler instead of a rock crawler, which is what they call 4x4s that people buy and they never take off road. I don’t know about the U.K. but the off road guys here are a tough bunch. But I ignore them. I’m 70 and I do what I want.
    Those two door models look more appealing to me. Follow your heart.😎👍

Having owned a very pimped out nene Landy 90 ragtop my advice would be don't go for the convertible, it's so complicated to take off and put back on you'll just never bother with it. Also don't go down the massive wheel/tyre route (we did) it ups the gearing and is like starting in 2nd so it eats clutches. Plus if you park it on the street it will be stolen. Great fun though. Defenders are great but they are intended for a very particular purpose. They are serious off-road overland vehicles or for farm use but for general road use - meh. We had a 1960's Land Rover in the 1970's and flat out it would do about 55-60 mph but the engine was screaming so 40-45 mph was the maximum practical speed limit to keep the noise at acceptable levels. We only used it for short (max 3-4 miles) journeys around narrow country lanes in Hertfordshire but the fuel consumption was horrific (10 - 15 mpg). The good thing about them is depreciation is negligible or as you say the value may increase so running cost may not be so bad taking into account the appreciation in value. Would I buy one - probably not at this stage no as I enjoy quiet and comfort. I live in Canada and LD's are rare, Jeeps are the equivalent here and a good friend has a new one. It looks nice but same issues - noisy and not that comfortable for anything more than 10-20 miles . . .so much so that they ended up buying an Audi Q5 eTron as well. The 5 litre LD you drove is really more akin to a Mercedes G Class - now that would be fun.

    Great video. Got a question for you. You see the the Land Rover as an investment and that it "could" actually increase in value after 3-4 years or so. Is it to be stored away and only used for weekend jollies or is it a daily run-around. I ask because the maths for me appear to be different. It might make money if its low mileage and not used much but if its a daily run-around the running costs and servicing costs could far exceed any potential gains you hope it would achieve in the 3-4 years. Factor in the trend towards electric vehicles and the desire to stop using fossil fuels ( i'm a bit of a sceptic with the proposed targets that have been set on achieving this) then that will have an adverse effect on all internal combustion driven cars and their value. If you can afford to lose 30K and put it down to life i would say hell yeah but if it isn't i might not really want to take the chance on it if i am honest. Great car and if money were no object would have one in a heart beat. Too me they are everything British. Like the Red Telephone box and the Post boxes. :)

    Not for me Freddie and those two pimped up Defenders are just that, Pimps rides I'm afraid. Just think of the fuel consumption. Many years ago when Peterborough had a development corporation and I worked in the Forestry and Landscape department, we occasionally got to drive one of their 110 Defenders, 6 cylinder Petrol ones towing a 4 wheel trailer. They were horrible and I nearly jackknifed one when I got the combo over 40... Now the Tractors they had WERE fun as they would go over or through any terrain, towing a trailer. Max speed 18mph tho' 😁

  • @trailingarm63
    @trailingarm63 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Good film, I found your predicament over the heater hilarious, and I was thinking "welcome to the bizarre world of Land Rover". The whole package used to be much worse. Coil springs improved the ride and handling a bit and by LR standards the turbo diesel you had was quick: God help you in one of the older ones. Long-wheel-bases were never popular on farms because of the turning circle, a SWB is better but the modified versions you tried out are just toys for Gulf playboys. There's nothing useful about them: the wheels & tyres, for example, are useless for any kind of off-road work and the fuel consumption is gonna' make a Hummer look thrifty. Something like a Ford Ranger is effectively the modern Land Rover because it's strong, practical, economical and affordable. It's also a handsome vehicle, which has been one of LR's main (only?) attributes. If the finances allow, buy yourself a short-wheel-base Series 3 or 90 Station Wagon, petrol (with a galvanized chassis & good bulkhead) for Sunday drives with Monika, but keep the Fiat or something similar as your main car.

    Hi Freddie
    Pete here, saw your latest video on the defender, don't do it Freddie, don't pull the trigger, I will tell you why!
    1 there is no safety factor for you or Monika, no airbags anywhere, yes it may look solid as a rock, but that works against you in a head on collision as there are no crumple zones that are built into modern technology, if you hit something you are sure to die if you hit something in one of those.
    Freddie think about it they stopped making them for a reason and you say they are going to be worth more in the future have you heard of inflation your £ in the future isn't going to be worth what it is today and if you calculate in as well what the overall running cost is over that period it will certainly cancel out any profit.
    I know that vehicle is on your hit list as desire but trust me move on, I once had a desire for the mark 3 jaguar xj the 4.2, I did get one and it was everything I wanted for 6 months, then I realised it was just a big gas guzzling expensive old vehicle with no safety features, so I got rid quick and put my family first.
    So Freddie it's your choice! But for me I jog passed 😂😂 and save my money for something a lot, lot, lot more safer for you and Monika
