I am going to be honest and confess myself here. I started painting old furniture for necessity. I love colors, love to paint and had an empty house that step by step get into a full space of old damaged stuff we got for free from good people. So I decided to fix, paint and keep all. Later on I thought that with the experience I would be able to build a small business painting this and that but I just became uncomfortable with painting all specially pieces 100% wood and with an historical story. I am glad I can learn from channels like this to restores instead damaged history. So, thank you.

My grandfather was from Western PA. He was a farm boy and lived through the Depression, so he could fix anything. He was an appliance repairman by trade and once made a table saw out of a lawnmower engine. Still works, he died in 1985. Thanks for trip down memory lane.

That's awesome! Sounds like something my pap would've done. He was an electrician in the mill and could also fix anything, a farm boy (oldest of 5) during the depression as well and the best bud I could've ever asked for. What part of western pa was your grandfather from?

John Bear Woodworks & Furniture Restoration Hey bud, had to ask my aunt, they sold the farm in PA in the 60’s, and I grew up in Buffalo, so I don’t know PA that well. The farm my grandpa grew up on is in Susquehanna Co., Middletown Twp., on what is now called Lane Rd. between Rte. 267 and Irish Hill Rd. He was the oldest of 7 boys born in 1899. Two of them went to war, great uncle Tom came back, great uncle Fran was shot down in New Guinee, he was in the Air Force. The family used to have a big party every 4th of July on the farm to remember them. Amazing generation. I was lucky to grow up next to grandpa back in Buffalo, NY, where he moved for work when he was very young. He lived to be 86 and passed when I was 7, but i used to hang out with him all the time and play cards with him and stay for lunch. Take care pal, enjoy the woodworking content, keep up the great work.

Circa 1940's is my guess for this Roos cedar chest you have so beautifully restored.
It was fascinating to see you carve the trim with your Pap's homemade knife. Great carving tool kit!

We have a cedar chest like this, about the same vintage. Inherited from my mother in law. It has some intricate veneer work with the wood grain running on the diagonal and some of the veneer is chipped. I have no idea how to repair that seamlessly, or even for sure what wood the veneer is. Maybe walnut, like yours. It could certainly use some loving care. I’d take it to you in a heartbeat but we live in Oregon. Your chest looks beautiful. Another skillful restoration. You are so skilled at every aspect of restoration, but especially finish.

My Gramps used to carve all kinds of animals and birds. He was amazing. I got a 1925 Widdecomb vanity for free and the mirror frame is missing a carving on one side. Sure wish I had his skill and could duplicate it. I love old furniture and really enjoy your videos.

It’s amazing and brings me to happy tears all the time. I love having my grandfathers things. He was the best. Just a great, happy go lucky man. I admire your dedication to keeping furniture original. It's a nice job you have done. Personally, I'd have been sorely tempted to remove some of the detailing. Called it from the dummy drawer at the bottom. This is their basic model dressed up with some moldings, hence the paint instead of veneer on the bottom. The veneer on top (I think) is American Chestnut and mahogany. It was shellacked to show the grain. The bottom had a more durable finish because of the paint. The "drawer" is fake because it was meant to be inexpensive and joinery would have cost too much.
