    There's an old saying about making a silk purse out of a sow's ear which applies to the garbage used to make those pedestals for which the manufacturer should be ashamed. Your finish, both on the black pedestals and beautiful walnut burl top, is A1!

    I've been a french polisher for 33 years in the uk. What we do is coat up with stripper twice scraping in between coats then apply a 3rd coat and use corse wirewool going with the grain cleans all the finish off👍

    You can try a bathtub with water and fabric softener to soak the veneer in then mould it wet around the legs with no adhesive. Strap it down. Let it dry and then it will be moulded and you can adhere to the legs. Saw this on Thomas Johnson Antique Restoration.

      I didn't have the time and wasn't in the budget or else I would've reveneered them. Customer wanted black legs anyways so it didn't really matter. But you're right! I could've done that.

    A tip I got from See Jane Drill - use any kind of cooking oil to remove stain from your hands. It really works and is gentle to your hands. I use spray olive oil. Probably cheaper than the stuff you buy and you probably already have it!

    You did well to maintain a good attitude when things went south. And they went south quickly! As a piano refinisher I've run into many of the same problems you encountered here. Like you, I try not to use tinted lacquers as the tone can become uneven during spraying and sanding. I have a wonderful waterborne "lacquer" that dries fast and is sandable in 30 minutes. It makes it possible to apply and sand multiple coats in one day, and it's hard as a rock. let me know if you'd like some info on it.

    • @JohnBearWoodworks
      @JohnBearWoodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnBearWoodworks You must look into Eco Steps Coatings from San Diego, CA. ecostepscoating.com. I have been using them for a few years now and the results are fabulous. As I mentioned, you have a 30-minute dry time so you can apply up to four coats a day. I spray the clear Brushmaster coating and the results are amazing. Please give it a try.

  • @shawncharton9416
    @shawncharton9416 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That gummy finish is a commercial grade high wear finish from the 80's and 90's. I did a heavy office desk that had the same crud on it. It SUCKED. The veneer had sucked it up unevenly. I ended up having to sand it off and I did sand through a corner of the veneer. 80's and 90's nicer office furniture was really pretty badly made.

    That table fought you tooth and nail. You did a fantastic job. I know you preferred to not paint the base but it looks incredible, and resembles Biedermeier antique furniture. How many hours total did this project take you? I can’t imagine how much such a project costs? I was curious about the plastic sheet over the stripper. Can that technique be used with Zip Strip? That stuff seems so strong I know it dissolves synthetic brushes.

    • @JohnBearWoodworks
      @JohnBearWoodworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sure that'd work with zip strip. Always did that on tables at a shop I worked at and we were using the commercial stuff that the smell stays in your skin for days.😩 It reminds me of the episode of breaking bad when Jesse doesn't get the plastic tubs Walt tells him to and uses the bathtub instead. Hahaha some plastics can hold up to acids surprisingly well! 🤣

    How do you deal with the overspray in that space? Do you have some type of filters running? Really would like to know as this is a big problem for my workshop. Thanks and great job on the table. I just restored a maple dining room table and painted the legs black also.

    • @JohnBearWoodworks

      I get little to no overspray. I use an hvlp gun as they're known for less overspray. That and some fine tuning is all I really do.

    When you steam a veneer to raise the grain do you run the risk of the glue releasing?

    • @JohnBearWoodworks
      @JohnBearWoodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I take extra care when steaming a veneer. It's possible to lift but I've never had it happen. I just base it on a piece to piece basis whether or not I do it.
