That's a pretty fair job of modernizing that old M44 Mosin Nagant carbine. In all the metal work I've done, ( and still doing.) I have never tried to bring metals like this up to the shine you've achieved here. This was a great job, and you have certainly turned a 'pig's ear into a silk purse' with this one. Well done Kyle! This was a really interesting video.Thank you for a great bit of watching and learning,...again.
Nice Job. Some don't like sporterizing of surplus rifles, but an M44 is still readily available and a good candidate. They do have a safety though. When you have closed the bolt, pull back on the cocking knob at the rear of the bolt, turn it to the left and it should set into a small notch in the rear of the bolt housing. This will disengage the trigger and lock the firing pin to the rear. When ready to fire, simply pull back on the knob, rotate back to the center position, and slowly release the cocking knob. This is the same on most Mosin Nagant varients. If you can find one, you should also get a Finnish M39 Mosin. Same caliber, but the Finns put a thicker barrel which improved the accuracy. They also changed the sights, made a semi pistol grip stock, and polished the triggers. Really sweet shooters.
Polished Carbon steel. Looks great but keep it lightly oiled Kyle. Coming home from the range or hunt and leaving rifle in case would be a definite mistake. Great video by the way!
Unless you keep it in a closed container where moisture is directly contacting the steel for long periods of time, polished carbon steel is incredibly rust resistant.
A little late to the party, I just recently been watching your knife videos, very good job and informative, and now the firearms videos, excellant brother, thank you for taking the time to post the videos
Yes they have a safety pull back on striker knob turn and lock in place. Also you can adjust fireing pin protrudion .70 for berdan primers. . .50 boxer primers , a nice hunter finish use birch wood plum brown, as per instructions, But if you want a black finish just boil in hot water, it will turn the plum brown to black oxide . I know a lot of famous gunsmiths that started out just like you,
Great job. I'm sure by now you're aware Mosin's have a knob safety, but they're a pain to use and can't be used quickly. I would say that rifle would really be enhanced by installing a Timney trigger with a thumb safety. A one stage crisp trigger pull with the thumb safety right there (operates just like the Remington 700 safety) to instantly move to fire or to back to safe. You will enjoy your sportster that much more. ☺️
Rifle looks a treat!! If your barrel ever gets any play in it, you can do what I did with my Chinese nagant. Take some wax paper and wrap the barrel also put a thick paste on the barrel studs, then coat the inside with jb weld. Mount the barrel and let dry. After it's dry disassemble and remove the wax paper and paste wax and reassemble. Did wonders for tightening up the barrel on mine.
Your mosin nagant came out amazing! Great job! I had no idea you could do that from sanding with different grit sandpaper and polishing compound. I thought you had to send it out to be chrome plated, for a lot of money. Thank you for making the video and sharing it. And thanks for teaching me how to make a old girl beautiful again! 😁👍
If those cartridges are Berdan primed, you'll play hell getting the primer out. Check the box to make sure it isn't. Most steel casings are. Berdan priming is a configuration in the primer seat of the cartridge that has a small piece of metal that goes over the middle of the outlet for the primer, basically giving it two ports for ignition. Some dude named Berdan came up with the method. The brass casings all usually have straight primer holes that will pop the spent primer out with a simple punch in the resizing die; the Berdan can be reprimed but it takes some real talent and care (along with a special depriming tool) to get those little boogers out. Most people don't mess with it. The old Warsaw Pact rounds mostly have "throw away" casings made of steel, since it's cheaper to produce and does the same job, and just as well as brass casings. Steel rusts, but a lacquer or zinc coating is put on the casing to prevent rust. When I was working one day, I found a 440 rd can of 7.62x54R that someone who didn't know what they had deemed unworthy of keeping and discarded. It was a stamped steel box that was sealed with lead and painted OD green with Cyrillian script. A cousin of mine (upon my query) sent me a link to a site that helped me figure out what the writing all meant. The ammo was made in 1947 and packed in 1949. It shot just fine. 22 packs of 20 cartridges wrapped in paper and tied with string. And water tight as well. But I digress...... I'll comment further tomorrow, as it's late and I need to go to bed. I haven't watched the whole video so I'll see ya manana!!
not really that hard if you hydrolically deprime them, then drill new flash hole to convert to boxer prime. i do lots of them this way. there are videos on youtube showing you how to do this if you want to try. good luck, and thats an awesome rifle there.
It never would have occurred to me to go that way with a Mosin and do a mirror finish. I gotta say, looks pretty slick. I'd probably still go for a deep dull blue myself but no denying that looks real sharp, definitely enough to make me reconsider which way I'd want to go with the finish. Nice rifle buddy.
ZNA Productions once pointed out in one of his videos that if you want a stain that is (in this case) more black or more red, you should take a paint stick and scrape the dye off of the bottom of the can and mix it in.
It does have a safety.Pull back on that cocking knob and turn to the left. Also makes me sad to see that rifle cut up. I do enjoy your enthusiasm though. Subbed
I'm just seeing this on 2/20/24. You can attend a parade on Red Square with your ceremony Drill rifle.. 😀 It's your rifle you paid for it. I may have had a Black finish on the stock .
nice job BUT hey take your polished parts and make up a nickle acetate solution and nickle plate them never rust and easy to care for i nickled some parts on my 53 sks like mag rigger group and such and i looks great
being Russian steel I would think it would rust up pretty quick/ but it came out nice / nest time try adding red stain to golden type color in a separate cup and do a test on small extra piece of wood happy shooting
Thanks for another great video! Awesome rifles.i have a couple of unmodified matching number beauties with the original bayonets and clean and oil kits. I'm tempted to sport one out one of these days. Who knows.
What type of paper is that? Carbide, Wet/Dry, .....? What stages: 220 to 400 to 2,000??? No steps between?? I want to do to mine what you do in this video and really want to do it correctly. I have no experience sanding metal. Thank you. What specific wheel did you use to remove the varnish from the stock?
Hello good friend. So I am a journeymen gunsmith. And I have done this as well. Did you polish over the finish or did you strip the finish polish it and then hot caustic blue it? It's so shiney I can't tell with the camera if it's black and mirror or just polished steel. It LOOKS beautiful
Hello Mr. Noseworthy Thank you for the video it was a great find. I will be Trying this with my SKS Soon Do you have any recommendation's on how to prevent the polish from rusting?
Awesome job! I have a very sporterized M91/30 that has a very ugly desert camo paint job on the entire rifle. I wonder if sanding off the paint and replacing the resin stock might be worth the effort? It sure would make the gun look better! My rifle has a downward bent bolt, but I'm not sure if it's an actual sniper rifle or if that was done later by a gunsmith. I know that the stamps on the various parts indicate that the bolt was made in a different factory than the barrel. I'd love to own an original (stock) condition Soviet Mosin-Nagant (and an SKS)...neat rifles!
Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan Sadly the wood stock was replaced, and the paint is on everything but the bolt and trigger. They even painted the barrel and scope. [Head shake]
Will K,...as bad and ill-informed as the Goodale crowd are, I don't thing you'll have to worry about these Mosin Nagant bolt action rifles for some time yet,....I hope,...fingers crossed. Now where'd i put my 'lucky rabbit's foot ?
Reg Sparkes I would think so as well, but this government has done so many stupid things that nothing would surprise me. But I doubt even they would ban bolt action rifles.
Hey Will, apparently the Government in Australia is, or maybe has by now, done exactly that. Of all places for such strict and stupid regulations , those jackasses there has some pretty senseless ideas. By the way, if you want to see a really good channel from Australia, just search out 'ozziereviews'.
never happen Trudeau is falling on his ass thank god and the libtards are going out the door in 2019 and that will be the end of their stupid jackass ways
yep I've got one with a laminated stock., it's still in cosmoline for the most part. I've got most of it cleaned off but it lives in the safe right now. While it was available I bought the spam can of silver tip ammo that is no longer available. I got all my stuff through (classic firearms.com). graf.com has some real nice ammo for the 762x54r (Rimed casing) ya man time to hit the Range. !!!!!!! Great video Kyle !! P.S. Those case's are not easily reloaded due to the primer type.. However new brass is available for hand loading. ( Boxer) primed is the best choice for hand loading Kyle . ( BERDAN PRIMED ) are considered non reloadable, without special tools. Reloading is a great hobby in it'self, to me it's relaxing and enjoyable for hours of fun. plus after a while it saves hundreds of dollars on ammo cost. keep up the great work Kyle !!!!!!
Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan Pardon me Kyle that is a 91/30 Mossin Nagant. 7.62x54. No it's a original Military Rifle with all of it's accessories to include the Bayonet, ammo pouches, oil / solvent can and tool pouch. I even found stripper clips for it. Then I found a 7.62 Nagant Revolver complete with holster , tools and a spare cylender. they have not been fired on U.S. soil. but I have piles of original ammo and maintenance Documents. for both. WW-1 weapons are just so cool I just had to have a Russian set. on top of many others from different countries. the Mauser style of rifles are my favorite ones.t
Well… could have been a collector piece, all it needed was a stock and bayonet. - even today 5 years later that would cost only $200 or so U.S.D. - Yep! All that polishing made it a “real special piece” alright… really special! 🤣
I worry my Mosin isn't nearly as high quality as yours, there's way too much pitting and machine marks, I feel like I'd have to really sand the heck out of it. It looks like yours has almost no machine marks to begin with.
Subscribe! Ur awesome! I love your videos u do everything I want to do but can’t. I found you by your knife sharpening videos because I am buying a straight razor soon and I love mosin nagants I have been wanting one for a while but I can’t afford one lol
I did the almost the same thing to a WW II K98k, but I made the wood a bit more red and shined the hell out of the wood, very high gloss finish, it looks like a parade gun.

Major respect for modifying to your own personal taste and not catering to the collector ideal. Looks sharp.

Oh wow! Beautiful new rifle. I love the 7.62 x 54R cartridge. Great all out polish.

Thanks bud! The finish has held up perfectly so far. I really like it
@@kyle_noseworthy Right on bud, glad to hear it's working our for ya.
ZNA Productions once pointed out in one of his videos that if you want a stain that is (in this case) more black or more red, you should take a paint stick and scrape the dye off of the bottom of the can and mix it in.
Loved how it turned out
If you pull the knob on the back of the bolt and turn it left or right. it's the safety
You forgot 6 layers of hand rubbed Tung oil on the stock! Looks like a princess wearing sneakers! LOL. Great job on the steel, though!
You convinced me to do this to my Yugoslavia m48 8mm mosin
Outstanding work. Bravo!
Good job Kyle. We love our rifle shooting here as well, I think I could happily have a cup of coffee with you.
The rifle has a safety. Pull back on the cocking piece of the bolt and twist.
Amazing job
It does have a safety.Pull back on that cocking knob and turn to the left. Also makes me sad to see that rifle cut up. I do enjoy your enthusiasm though. Subbed

I've used tupperware dishes full of snow/ice to keep steel cool when working on some things! Must be an east coast thing eh!! Great video Kyle.
being Russian steel I would think it would rust up pretty quick/ but it came out nice / nest time try adding red stain to golden type color in a separate cup and do a test on small extra piece of wood happy shooting

👍 Beautiful rifle!
I have a Mosin, and live it, but GOD DAMN yours turned out pretty!
Thanks Brian!

How many hours of draw filing and what not did it take you I think I had 27 hours into just removing the machining marks and re contouring the barrel
Hello Mr. Noseworthy Thank you for the video it was a great find. I will be Trying this with my SKS Soon Do you have any recommendation's on how to prevent the polish from rusting?
Sorry off topic, do you know where to buy that absolute sharpening system from in Canada, website says does not ship to Canada. Thank you.

Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan Sadly the wood stock was replaced, and the paint is on everything but the bolt and trigger. They even painted the barrel and scope. [Head shake]
that's a sad affair lol
Why does everyone think these rifles don't have safeties?
Super master! Bravo! Very good! Professional!👍👍👍✊🏻
Absolutely fantastic!
Won't rust be a concern with that un-blued finish? Did you maybe wax the metalwork?
Good job, do you have some where that so show what you have for sale?
Very Nice job!
Better enjoy it while you can, before Trudeau comes knocking :(

Put something on it to protect the finish, be a shame for the raw metal to rust. Blue or nickel plating or even some spray

I'm out in the ocean, floating around! Central NL, in the Baie Verte area
Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan haha gotcha, I got a 91/30 I wanna add the sling metal on and polish alot of it lol
