    I bought mine in 1991 when I was 16. A local gun store got a bunch in and was selling them for $79.99 CDN. This was in rural Newfoundland. I shot my first woodland caribou at about 50-70 yards with it in 2001 (I still have the spent casing). It was a 180gr SP Sellier & Bellot. Setting the rear sight to 3 and a half put the POI at ~2 inches high at 100 yards. I should break it out this spring if I get a black bear tag. I still have some S&B 180s. I also have a box of MFS 203gr SPs.

      They are really cool carbines. You will enjoy!

    The reason for the milling beyond the 1000m elevation markings, is that the rifle's rear sight riser leaf ramps would not allow for proper elevation. To use a rifle sight base out to "lobbing range" on this carbine, would require raising/welding and calibrating, then remilling the elevation ramps. True carbine sight elevation ramps are more ramped on the forward of the base. All above is given on the assumption that the carbine and rifle rear sights leafs are the same length.

    As you said , a lot of time , effort & machining went into making the 91/30 a Carbine . Also several other countries , like the Carcano M91 & the Styer M95 where cut down from the long rifles to carbine . The time frame for these was during the Cold War , if rifles where needed , it would have been better to be using carbines , not long rifles . It could have been Bulgaria that did the work , they did a lot of the Styer M95 /30 conversions to carbine length

      @SuburbanRifleman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s true. I forgot about the Bulgarian connection to the Steyr M95/30 conversions. I have one of those too.
      Thanks for the comment.

    If I had to venture a random guess (with no factual evidence) I'd say they were probably done for commercial sale and never got fully marketed before the fall of the Soviet Union. It's strange that they quality and finish is better than that of the refurb SKSs so that makes me think they werent a military item and at the time the hot thing was to cut down surplus rifles into sporters anyway so it makes sense. Again, no evidence, just my best guess

    A friend(russian) tells me that they had a need for handy hunting rifle in the 50s/60s and had stockpile of oversized mosin 91/30 so they order to put tem to the m38 size. I also saw in a Facebook group a guy(also russian) he said they had them in the 70s 80s also in the Pionier youth Organisation, and the the paramilitary training ad the highschool for pre-military training. Both say this was an update from the long 91/30 to the m38 and more for civilian, hunting and youth training. The front sight is also new because the barrel wer just chopped of and the old fronsight would never fit on the thicker part, also the 91/30 bajonet can not fit there. So it was never issued with a bajonet.

      Thank you for that information! I’ve heard the hunting angle before but the Pioneer and school connections make sense as well.

    great intro music. thank you for that.
    that is a beautiful railroad spike hammer. recet ATF says 1899 and older needs no background check, FFL , nothin... because prior to 1899 its not a firearm.... ATF....
    OH DAMN! That sight work screams motive!!! you nailed it Suburban man! The shooter most likely used the rear sight in their own way. THats what I would have done... Ive never needed to consider a 100o yard shot...... THat fabrication of the rear sight is interesting - my mind is racing at the the thought. . Im no Mosin genius, but I am clever and crafty and I know the difference between the workmanship, skill, and scale of a craftsman versus that of an industrial process, or of a backwoods hick for that matter.
    It could just be the woods color, but that doesnt physically look big enough to be an 1891rifle... I could be trippin... I LOVE that wood's color though. KNOW THAT \
    she had no rifle twist though
    You're intuition about someone tweaking on that gun in expectation of trouble due to the cold war pandemic was pretty insightful - i could see people doing that.... I know Soviet Union and Gulags and ALL that got really bad, but work programs?! You're a conspiracy theorist! I like you!

    That an interesting carbine... who knows the real story.. maybe some day it will be clear but probably not. I got interested in milsurp when still in hs in the early 80s before it became so popular.. had quite a collection but not nearly as many Mosins as you. I did buy a crate of 10 91/30s in about 1988 for about $200-$250( if my memory serves me
    correctly) .. only have a 1944 manufactured M-44 in my Mosin "collection" now.. I cringe when I think about the stuff I got rid of during my divorce.. Hakims , SVTs , a Rashid , FALs
    , Garands ,a G43 .. the list goes on.. still have a K98k and a few others but damn.. oh well , at the end of the day it’s just stuff.
    Kinda got into lever actions lately.. emphasizing on JM Marlins. Have a good day .

    • @SuburbanRifleman
      @SuburbanRifleman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our interests in firearms have been fairly parallel. I went through many old milsurps other than Mosins as well but most are gone now. I still have a few cool old things though.
      Lever actions have pretty much taken over lately. I’m going to be doing a video this season on a very interesting lever action. I hope you will check it out.
