Nice one Gary! loved your explanations, hoping it inspires a few more people to get out there and start enjoying documenting this Great City ! Im off to check for or of your videos, thank you.
An engaging discussion on "Street Photography" accompanied by superb photograhic examples. All makes for compelling viewing. Many thanks for sharing your views and experiences.
i am 50 and love photography but only recently bought my first DSLR as opposed to a point and shoot. I stumbled across this video and am going to give this a try, I am British but now live close to Niagara Falls in Canada where there is a plethora of subjects.. Thank you so much for this info
You did a great job in this video. I tre ake my cell phone with me as well but I'm not out n and about all the time. I live in a small town in Western Oklahoma and not much out here except storm chasing which is something I enjoy doing.
Taking a picture and turning it in to black and white or shooting for black and white ! THIS IS THE MOST SENSIBLE THING ONE COULD SAY AND THAT IS WHAT 99% OF STREET SHOOTER DO NOT UNDERSTAND ! They are so worried to meter to the right(light) and don't get the highlights overexposed, with B/W it is sometimes a MUST, to get contrast and don't have distraction in the light parts !!!! I just stumbled on this channel, immediately subscribed .
Love guys like this. Doesn't push his biases and/or preferences. Instead, he shares his experiences and passes on USABLE knowledge. Appreciated. Subbed. Thanks!
Best example of explaining "street photography "i have ever watched. 7 minutes in and I've ticked like and added it to favourites. Recently had a day out with my son (32) doing a bit of everything from landscape to architectures to street photography ended up in harwich ! , tried to explain about the tricky well it can be sometimes art of street photography ( hes getting into photography) he had a iphone i had my olly 10 mk3. Had a great day out and im going to get him to watch this. Many thanks Gary great vlog.
Very well put might I add. I just might try and go out and try some. Problem is my area is extremely boring for background and architecture. But I’ll try and be adventurous now that you’ve stirred my interest. Thank you for that.
Gary.....This is the BEST .....Street-Photography tutorial EVER......clear, concise, accurate, informative, brilliant !....I am as keen as you ......recently judged a Street Photography competition for a club....
stumbled across this video while trying my hand at street photography. Very simple yet informative. I'll check out other vids from your channel. Thanks.
I just bought my first decent camera, a Sony Alpha 6400. I have been tying it out and learning. I really love how you spoke about this aspect of Photography as this is something i am keen to expand on. Thank you
that fade in that you did in front of the graffiti tank was a cool move..awesome video and thank you, cant wati to get back out there an take some cool pics
Brilliant tips Gary, I adopt a similar approach. Candid street photography tells great stories through composition and luck. Two things I've learned; Flip screens are good for icognito shots, you look like you are messing around with the camera rather than taking pictures, and zoom lenses are brilliant if you are nervous about getting too close. Never had an issue with people either, respect, a smile and some humility go a long way 😊
I’m really late to this video but I got so much from it. So many channels are all about self promotion or trying to monetise you tube but this is genuinely instructive and inspiring
G'day Gary, I recently found your channel due to a Forestry shooting session you did with Mike Brown so I got your channel link from his and had a browse through your videos and subscribed. I'm so glad I did as you, like Mike, explain Photography so well so anyone can get a grip on it. I've always wanted to try street photography, especially black and white and your talk and ideas have opened up a whole new motivation for me. I'm pretty new at DSLRs and have a Nikon D5600 with the 18-55mm kit lens and the 70-300mm VR DX lenses and yes I know they are basic glass, but all I can afford right now but would also like to get the nifty 50 and a 105mm macro lens as well. Thanks a million Gary, looking forward toy all your videos.
Brilliant - is the short way of putting it. Engaged and engaging no nonsense information delivered with a big sense of humor. Big respect for Gary Gough.
I happened to come across this, and to everyone I say, straight forward information, no mocking about, excellently said. Take it from a one who has done these tricks since 69. Cheers mate!
Hi Gary Just discovered your channel. Must say that your videos and overall tips are absolutely brilliant. So helpful for me as an amateur photographer. Thanks a lot and have a nice day :-)
Direct and down to earth, I liked it. I'm getting back into photography, especially street and quote I always remember and that inspires me is "I photograph to see what the world looks like in photographs" said by Gary Winogrand, a famous American street photographer from the 60's-70's
Confrontation became a fear for me. I used to be quite confident in street photography for years, but lately, I feel I lost that courage to continue. And in this corona time, people became more suspicious about their surroundings. Thank your for the video.
Putting out fires with Gasoline..Bowie classic..thx Gazza..just shows music can be involved with our photography..or indeed other aspects of life in general.
That’s got to be one of the best and easiest to understand videos on photography I’ve watched. You made me want to take my camera out rather than put me off 👍
Your pictures are pure art (have often looked at your high quality landscape pictures/programs, now you are also the king of the streets. Thank you for bringing these TH-cam shows up to a higher level, yes, you know all those Americans and Australians with their nonsense, or should I honestly say bullshit. You are a light in the dark .
Great video, shots and tips. Nice to see someone showcasing London. Would love to see more videos on cityscapes. Cheers for another inspirational video!
subscribed and clicked the bell nice vid your right about equipment Gary. The tips on using shutter priority were very helpful also. Your work looks great and it looks like you have a lot of fun taking the pictures ...........
50 years ago many people loved having their photo taken in the street. Times have changed peoples views. Amazing that you can point a camera phone at someone at they don’t bat an eyelid. Pull out a decent camera and you get a very different reaction.
Wow, came across this by accident. Great to watch, with straight to the point information. I started doing street photography on holiday, in the bustling cities of New York, Melbourne and London, and that gave me the confidence that if I was spotted, I’d smile and tell them they look great or very interesting. Met some great people who were more than happy to have a chat as well. Next step is having a go in my native Yorkshire! Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
great video Gary..your personality and knowledge are a perfect combination...and your last comments concerning street photography as not having to be perfect ? It takes all the pressure off...thank you !
Thanks Gary! There are some great tips here. I am going to be in London in a couple of weeks’ time, and will have a go, although there are plenty of opportunities for street photography here in New York. I grew up in London, but it it is constantly changing and has changed so much since I left for New York 18 years ago. I feel like a tourist these days when I’m in London.
Gary Gough I don’t think so. But I think your tips and advice would work fine, especially the not being afraid to have a camera around your neck, looking as though you’re taking a selfie with an iPhone and waiting for people, or a person, to walk into a scene, rather than pan them. The only thing to be careful is to avoid taking pictures of people around the 9/11 memorial, especially if they are not tourists, as they maybe there to remember a loved one. And probably wise to avoid taking pictures outside synagogues, as such behaviour might attract the attention of their security folks and trigger a call to NYPD. Let me know if you do. I’d be happy to show you around.
This is something that i'd like to take further and this video has helped me a lot. There's no right and wrong, just lots of ideas and thought provoking insights - cheers!
Hi Gary, thanks for that, a very timely subject for me because I have just purchased an Olympus OM-D E-M10 and will be doing much more street photography going forward.

Thanks Gary! There are some great tips here. I grew up in London, but it it is constantly changing and has changed so much since I left for New York 18 years ago. I feel like a tourist these days when I’m in London.
I'd love to shoot Steet Photography in New York - Are people a little more suspicious there?
Gary Gough I don’t think so. But I think your tips and advice would work fine, especially the not being afraid to have a camera around your neck, looking as though you’re taking a selfie with an iPhone and waiting for people, or a person, to walk into a scene, rather than pan them. Sound advice thank you. Would love too cheers
Raised on B&W. But also do colour. I like the way you process your colour. Bold and Lively. I strive to do my similarly.
ZappaBlues - very kind of you to say, thank you 👍🏻
Great Instructional and inspirational vid, Gary. Liked and subbed. Good stuff !
Cheers Dave
I like your hints and advice. First video that I agreed with all of the comments !! I also like your images !!

Ha Ha...,No excuses..., just learning points! :)

Great video on street photography Gary, really well described and some lovely shots. I really enjoy but struggle with this genre. I guess I should get out and practise more!
Just get out there Alan, it's the only way 👍🏼
Mind-blown, super cool photos
Thank you
i love street photography as well , sadly i don't live in an amazing city but close to mine there is Strasbourg and it's a huge place to explore and take photos , it's really interesting to challenge yourself especially when you are not really confident or afraid cause when you are able to shoot freely without fear in the street any kind of photography start to feel even better , for exemple weddings , the first wedding i've done i was afraid of taking pictures of people , but today i was in strasbourg doing street photo for the first time and i understood many things by doing it
first: people don't really care and you should not be afraid
second: it's so much fun walking around the city , discovering new places etc
third: you can break all the rules or follow them as you wish and be even more creative than when you shoot basics portrait or in certain conditions
overall street photo is in my opinion the best to learn to be confident and stop being afraid of everything and enjoy more and more photography in general
thanks for all the advice especially about the composition and shutter speed priority that's something i'll test next time
Good vid Gary. Nice to hear some real talk
Well done Gary. Enjoyable, informative.
Thank you, kindly 👍
