Total Solar Eclipse
On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk.

Who Can See It?
Lots of people! Everyone in the contiguous United States, in fact, everyone in North America plus parts of South America, Africa, and Europe will see at least a partial solar eclipse, while the thin path of totality will pass through portions of 14 states.
What is It?
This celestial event is a solar eclipse in which the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, from beginning to end, as viewed from a given location. For this eclipse, the longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path will be about two minutes and 40 seconds. The last time the contiguous U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 1979.
I loved your video and commentary. It was wonderful how people from the country could settle down in this one church area and be able to use the facilities, hot dogs, and drinks. This is how life used to back when I was a kid. You could catch the excitement in the air. And you got pictures of the stars/planets. Your observations were helpful. Thank you for sharing your post.

but...it's very near the sun, so the brightness would wash it out.... and the dark side of the moon is facing us as well as the sun is behind it.
It's a good question, I just think the overpowering sun and the lack of illumination hide it
My wife and I watched it from the Capital building in Jefferson City Mo. The one really strange thing that we both noticed was the 5 mins. prior to and the 5 mins. after the Eclipse, All of the orange/yellow tint to the sun light was gone and it was like standing under a bright pure white spot light. It was both eerie and beautiful at the same time.
Right, the color wasn't yellow right? Very odd. I've been to the capitol area many times. Probably a good spot to see it.
I was an hour away from there, and also in totality. It was so great to see it out in the country. It’s hard to capture, but this video does a very good job of capturing what it’s like.

I live in Arnold MO... it was the BEST thing I have ever been able to witness.. the sky right before it happened to cover what a strange color it was around us. Like Yellow/Orange.. I am so glad I got to see this completely covered. Also we did see stars and heard the birds crickets go crazy. The darkness was just super cool.

Good for you on even trying to video totality. I was too much in awe of the experience so, I totally forgot to try to take video/pictures. I did try to video shadow bands though. It didn't turn out.

Thanks for the great video. I wanted to see what it looked like on the ground, how dark it got, what it all looked like. Most videos are all focused upwards on the sun, very few on the actual experience of being in that shadow and watching it get dark at midday. Good narrative and audio, too, btw.
That is an excellent comment. In hindsight, I was kind of confused as to how to document this. I try to tell the story from my perspective and my location. I almost didn't even grab the camera, but then I figured, why not. In hindsight, I see the mistakes I made and wish I'd brought a second camera and mounted it on a tripod.
Most of the videos I make get less than 200 views, but this one gets 25000+? Had I known that I would have made a much better video.
I was both wanting to experience the eclipse, and not knowing what to expect, at the same time, trying to make a video worth watching. I wish I had taken more video of the horizon, because what struck me the most was the way the entire horizon, all 360 degrees, looked like sunset. The shadows on the ground are not apparent in the video...that was very strange, but there were waves of shadows that were strange. And finally, the aura around the moon and sun was so odd and indescribable, also not apparent in the video.
Right, I taped the crescent moons on the ground, the horizon, the atmosphere, the shadow of darkness coming in, the totality and my reaction to the most sublime vision I have ever seen. No camera or video could ever capture what we saw, just the experience.

Very cool, I'm in NC so I only saw around 96% which doesn't seem like much difference as far as how dark it gets but comparing here to there, it is quite a difference. :)

It's so much fun, to watch and compare everyone's experiences across the country. We were out in a cow pasture near Torrington, Wyoming. (with no bathrooms for miles. lol) You're right; video just CAN'T capture it. It's truly a multi-sensory experience!

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, I really don't, but my general sentiments concerning the eclipse were not the same as yours. I saw the eclipse in the small town of Marion, Kentucky along with about 700 people at a large city park. There were plenty of folks but with the size of the park, it wasn't what I would call crowded. The sky was clear. I thought it would get totally dark during the full eclipse. It didn't. And the sky did not get totally dark, either. A few of the brightest stars or planets became visible. The eclipse itself was kind of cool but it did not make me fall to my knees and weep. I thought that the most interesting thing was the responses of the people in the crowd. The responses went from astonishment, to apathy. In many ways a huge, orange, full moon rising over the night horizon is more spectacular, if not as rare.
Thats a really good comment. Honest and to the point. I almost didn't even drive down to the totality part because I heard there might be massive traffic from people all over the country driving down to see it. Not to be a party pooper, I decided to go, and I brought my camera. I wasn't super blown away either, but I was still glad to have done it. I'd say the most interesting part was the very strange way the sun looked during totality. That isn't captured by video and can't be described.
It did not get as dark as I thought either. Still cool though and better than I thought. I will drive to see the next one.
Laura G. Young yes, I'm doing the same thing now! I attempted to go to Land Between the Lakes but only made it to Marion, Illinois. It brung tears to my eyes! I'm only 16 and I think I might chase these, at least some of them. It's such an amazing experience and really lifted my spirits!
I decided to ask my dad just a week before, and got two friends to pay for gas and we left at 4AM and still didn't make it but at least we had totality, we had a specific spot that picked out that was hidden yet very beautiful on its own without an eclipse. Luckily it's in the path of the one in 2024!
AnythingWithWheels yeah there really was a lot of people that probably like us decided a short time before that they could drive down and back in a day, I gave 3 hours for traffic delays on top of what google maps said it would take to get to Land Between the Lakes, Kentucky, and the drive to Janesville, Wisconsin (my hometown) from Marion, Illinois (where we ended up stopping, both luckily in the middle of the totality path) is usually 5:30 but it took us almost 13 hours! Even in Wisconsin at 12:30 PM there was traffic backed up! Honestly the drive was nice as I saw a lot of new places I've never been to and was with some of my best friends!

In hindsight I wish I would have filmed this better, but I really had no idea what to expect. I couldn't tell how the camera would pickup the sun, with the glasses or not, and I was also trying to experience the eclipse as well. But, I figure it's better to have some video than none.

Ha, we were w/in a few miles of each other. My mom's house was in the path of totality in Wildwood, spent the day with her and the family. It was ungodly hot at 11:00, cooled off quite a bit (or the sun wasn't uncomfortable to stand in) as 1:16 approached. Look at your video at 5:19, there is a shadow of leaves below the crook of your elbow. If you look in that shadow you see curved slivers of light surrounding a dark shadow- the near-eclipsed sun imaged by diffraction (like a pinhole viewer). This was amazing to me, and I photographed it at my mom's house as the sun shone through the trees.

That was the Planet Venus that appeared during the darkening of the sky while the Solar Eclipse was happening. It was a very amazing sight to see.
ok ... good video, Tom. In Cincinnati we got to 93%, and yeah it got dim , but nothing like what you had. I noticed the leaf shadows go weird also . The birds stopped flying and chirping. I saw a bat fly by. I was out in my driveway, looking at the shadows on the concrete. When I turned around and looked down the other way into the garage, it was lit up as if it was night. Normally it's dark in there, even with the 3 LED lights on. Now it looked like it does at night. Looking at your video I could see a sunset all around you. So cool.
That's awesome... It was def different than what I expected. I will say when the sun does disappear it's quite a surreal strange scene. No camera can really catch it.
Jim Barrie I live near Cleveland and we got around 80% coverage. It dimmed slightly and our shadows became sharp, but nothing too extraordinary.
I shot 8 minutes of video... it's on my James Barrie Face Book page. We got a lot of crescent shadows. That any my garage was lit up like it was night. My camera adjusted for the lighting, so it looks bright out
I saw a total solar eclipse in Ceduna, Australia. It happened on December 4, 2002. Totality lasted 32secs.

I’m from St. Louis and I work at the Zoo here and witness the eclipse and it’s was really neat can’t describe the way it felt, it was kinda like somebody had put on on sunglasses and there was a cool tent everywhere can’t wit for the partial one in 2024 I’ll be 31 and then the other total eclipse in 2045

I didn't have glasses, I used this sheet of optical filter plastic but I saw the sun JUST BEFORE total eclipse. And it looked like this super bright silver reflection in the sky. It looked the way a mirror reflecting a sun beam at you from far away looks, except it was HUGE and super bright. It kinda looked like the way stars look, silver and twinkly. But this was like 1000 times brighter and bigger, it gave me chills.
Then within seconds that look quickly shifted to the total eclipse and that was freakin crazy too

Yo I live 5 min away from that church I go there sometimes on Sunday! I watched the eclipse in school from Parkway South High.

Lz Amere, The reason you can't see the moon if because our eyes only pick up images that light reflects off of. The reason we were unable to see the moon from our location, is because the light from the sun is actually hitting the back of the moon only. Therefor, the moon literally looks invisible.
We are also working on this technology for protecting bases/buildings. If the light is bent around the object, and none actually touches the object; it cannot be seen by the naked eye.
For anyone wondering, the shadows on the ground they mentioned are called shadow bands. Look them up it’s very cool

We had 95% here in southern Oregon and we all noticed how cool it became, it actually got cold, then went up to 91 later. Weird. Nice video. By the way, we need another QRP video.

Thanks for posting this. I wondered what it was like in totality. I was going to travel to Jefferson City, MO to see the eclipse, but at the last minute I wasn't able to. Anyway, I saw it in Springfield, MO, where we were supposed to get 96-97% coverage of the sun. We were told it would be like early evening here and the street lights would come on, but that in complete totality it would look like midnight outside. So, we were expecting something like what you saw here.
But, in reality it didn't get any darker, and only some people could see the almost nonexistent, light gray shadow that was ebbing in and out and only covering a wee bit of the sun. It came late too. The ebbing shadow looked like the shadow a ceiling fan makes when it's daytime but the lights in the house are off and the curtains are open. It was a huge disappointment.

Chante Moody I am so sorry you didn't get to see it. I cannot stress enough that the difference between 99% and 100% totality is literally the difference between night and day. I saw my first in 1979...changed my life as I morphed into a bon-a-fide eclipse chaser and as of this last one which I viewed from Madras, OR, have now been to eight...two of which were clouded out.
You owe it to yourself, before you die, to see a full total solar eclipse. Nature's
absolute number one blockbuster....nothing else comes close. Am already planning my next one in Chili in 2019. I drive an old car (88 Pontiac Fiero) and live in a very modest house...save my denero for the more important things in life.

It was cooler than I expected.
This is a great video. A lot of the others showed the eclipse from a camera with special lenses. I didn't want that. I wanted to see a video from the perspective of an ordinary smartphone video, and this one is very good because it showed the eclipse, the corona, and how dark it was outside along with everything else. I was in Salem when I saw it, and I was glad to capture the moment on my smartphone, but once the corona hit we had to scramble around for our cameras and take pictures. My picture was the best with the sun above me and you can see how dark it was around me. Next time I do it I will have a GoPro on a tripod while I take pictures. 2024 is around the corner! Look for me in Dallas.
Yeah, I"m embarrassed by how shakey and un-pro this video was. I hadn't planned on video'ing, but then at the last minute I grabbed my Sony Action Cam 4K. Most videos I make get 50-300 views after a couple months. If I had known this would have blown up to 50,000 I would have used a Tripod and multiple cameras. Thanks for the Nice comment.
I was in a vineyard near Farmington, MO that day. Watched it at a winery that opened for the Big Event. Hotter & more humid than all 7 levels of Hell, but that's typical Missouri in August. It was great to lie in the mown grass with my special glasses and feel an ever so slight, and increasing, cool breeze as the eclipse reached totality. A nearby dusk-to-dawn light went on. At totality it had to be about 10 degrees cooler. This was first & will probably be last total eclipse I experience in my lifetime.

It looks like you had totality for 1 minute 30 seconds. The maximum possible is 2 minutes 40 seconds. Good job driving south to it. Those who didn't drive to it will have to wait 7 years to have another chance. The previous one was 39 years ago and was in just a handful of states in the northwest. For a lot of folks this was their once in a lifetime chance.
I saw that one.....my first. As a result, I morphed into a classic eclipse chaser and have now been to eight--- two of which were hopelessly clouded out.
The shadows actually get sharper as the sun. or any light source gets smaller. That's because a pinpoint of light doesn't have a broad "fill" light but just a pinpoint, and the shadows become more sharp edged, although dimmer.
what differ from 2024 eclispe to the 2017 eclipse?
hello watching your video to get ready for the 2024 eclipse. Will be watching from the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area. Can you give me any pointers? Like anything you wish you did or wish you did differently? Did you have a filter on whatever you used to record the actual sun? Were you able to get photos or video of the shadows on the ground? I have been waiting for this and talking about it for YEARS now. I can’t wait.

You got the shadow bands; those were those weird shadows on the ground before totality. Good job on getting them, since they are sometimes difficult to get on video. They should have been seen just after totality also. They are cause by the shadows of the moon's mountains and crater rings.
And the strange halo around the moon is the sun's corona, which is its atmosphere. It is best seen during totality, and can reach into the solar system for millions of miles.
Yes I was taken by surprise to see the waves of shadows. You can't actually see them in the video, but they are very strange.
I wore a hat like yours on my drive as well. Very important to wear sun screen while driving! I cover up my arms and hands, too. The sun does cause skin cancer.
Yeah, the hat looks goofy, but gotta minimize the sun as I am out doors a LOT.
We had a solar eclipse at school we went outside to look in the front but we like a scientist there on that day when it happened the scientist brought those special glasses for the solar eclipse it was so cool it went from day to night kind of it

7:23. That's the corona of the sun, it extends several million miles away from the sun, is normally not visible, unless the moon totally blocks the sun. I went to Carbondale and witnessed this. By far the most awesome celestial event I've ever experienced!
Shadows at 6:32 could be from the mountain features on the moon. Its able to cast shadows on earth during an eclipse.

For 100% of the sun to be covered by the New Moon, does it have to be in the direct center of The Path Of Totality?
By definition, Totality is 100% coverage. Look up "Annular eclipse" There are variations to "solar eclipses'.

Exactly right. I think they did that on purpose, right as the eclipse hit, they ran the siren...not sure why...just for fun I guess. It freaked us out a tiny bit wondering why.

Sony Action Cam 4K, search my channel for reviews.... I have better shots using this camera than others. It's small and pocket sized very easy for travel. If it weren't for that camera this video wouldn't exist because I wouldn't have bothered with any other camera.

Right you can't see it in the video but waves of shadows started appearing.
They are called shadow bands. You only see them when a tiny sliver of the sun is visible at the start and end of totality. They are caused by optical refraction in the atmosphere, the same thing that causes stars to twinkle.
I came from England to Missouri to see the eclipse, watched it near Hillsboro.

Nice video!! One second, did u notice that their is no moon seen before or after the alignment with the sun?...... But you noticed a star in the sky 🤔 I find that strange. I've watched over a dozen time lapse videos and can not find a moon in the videos. It's been plenty of days where I go outside and see the sun and the moon in the sky at the same time.
Since the only way we can see the moon during the day is by how it is lit by the sun, and during an eclipse the side of the moon lit by the sun is facing away from the earth, you can't see the moon at all through the illuminated atmosphere as an eclipse is starting.
Visibility of object in daylight is defined by there brightnass, they need to be brighter then atmosphere haze (blue sky), Moon coming to sun is low lit already even far away from it, magnitude brigness is too low and moon becomes invisble in daylight. at day of new moon is not visible at all

i dont know about the eclipse but you really got a real good view of the parking lot
You could see shadow bands also. They are very difficult to catch on video or still camera. I think he did well considering he didn't have a telephoto lens.
