    Thanks for the video Alan. My main observations about the total eclipse are: 1. It is indescribable 2. It happens so fast!
    Two minutes of totality felt like 12 seconds. Pictures and videos can't capture the experience. I feel so lucky to have witnessed it.

    Excellent work Alan, gorgeous imagery! It must have been really exciting to see the solar flares the first time after you captured them! The secondary effect, though not spectacular, was also interesting, how your thoughtful and reasonable coverage of a solar event could trigger a widespread eclipse of intelligence using only TH-cam as a filter. Hope you don't let it get you down! :-)

    Allen: Great photos. Thank you for sharing them. I hope that with all of the photography you were doing you also took time to just watch some of the eclipse with your eyes. The first total eclipse I went to in Mexico in 1991 lasted much longer than this one, yet I ended up staring through the viewfinder of the camera attached to my telescope for almost the entire eclipse. This time, I shot high-definition video and let the cameras do all of the work while I stood and looked up, enjoying the entire 2.5 minutes in all of its grandeur. I am curious. Did you also fly the drone and if so, what kind of footage did you get?

      Sharon Watson I have been doing a lot of internet research, and after watching a lot of online videos, I completely agree with you that the Earth must indeed be flat. The thing that stood out to me most was some evidence captured by a scientist and explorer named Peter Lik. Look this guy up. He captured a photo of the moon with clouds BEHIND it. It is called "Bella Luna". The ONLY possible explanation is that the Earth is flat. Do some internet research on Mr Lik. He is kind of my hero, and he speaks the truth.

      Flat earth is a lie and has nothing to do with the bible or God. I can assure you that if your faith in God hangs upon a flat earth, your faith is false and in vain. You are one of many victims of TH-cam videos. When your primary source of education revolves around TH-cam, you are bound for failure. People who believe in flat earth simply don't have all the facts and like any false religion, its survival relies on you being ignorant of the facts.

    A number of people have videos with questions about whether this is really the moon that passes in front of the sun, or if this something else. Have you seen these videos yet? Some make some very good points - such as there should have been light reflecting off the sun onto the moon - BEFORE and AFTER the object covers the sun. This doesn't happen, if you notice. The object in front is never illuminated as if it were a real object in front of it...

      LOL.... ok -

    • @MatthewSaville
      @MatthewSaville 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cynthia Hamil,
      I'm not sure if you're into serious photography very much, but just for fun I'll elaborate a little bit on what current camera technology is capable of accomplishing: Simply put, the sun is *extremely* bright. So bright that a proper solar filter, in addition to blocking harmful (invisible) rays from the sun, it also blocks many, MANY "stops" of light as well. I'm not sure how many stops it is, but it's at least 10 or maybe 15-20.
      Unfortunately, no modern camera can capture more than 10-12 stops of light. And one stop of light is no small increment of brightness, each stop of light is either *double* or *half* that of the adjacent stop of light.
      Simply put, we don't have the technology to see both something that is so extremely bright, and something that is completely un-illuminated, in the same image.
      Neither do we have clear enough optics to simply brute-force our way to seeing both, by way of bracketing 10-20 different images. The orange glow that you see around the sun in the images before and after the total eclipse are NOT actually there, that is just haze created inside the lens itself.
      Some day, maybe we'll invent optics that can totally eliminate every single stray photon of light and capture the world with 100.00000% clarity, and maybe we'll invent a camera sensor that can capture 20-30 or 40-50 stops of light. Until then, you're not gonna see the moon under the conditions you're inquiring about. It's not a conspiracy, it's just optics / physics.

  • @LE-ly1su
    @LE-ly1su 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Based in my own experiences, the first time you get to experience a total solar eclipse, put down the camera, put away the filters, lay back and at the right time, look to the skies and enjoy the experience. Dont try to capture anything. Two+ years from now, I will be wherever I need to be to do just that. 2017 I only got about 25-40 seconds of the eclipse while blowing the rest of my time looking for stars, planets, 360 degree whatever on my crappy iPhone camera. Just experience it the way they did eons ago.

    Its interesting to see that when the moon passes over the sun, the moon freezes and holds its position for a few seconds. If the moon is in constant motion , wouldnt it just keep its velocity and continue to pass by the sun?

    • @markw563
      @markw563 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Moon didn't stop, its apparent size was 3% larger than the Sun's apparent size therefore it completely covered the Sun for over two minutes.

    • @dsanti4069
      @dsanti4069 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark W thanks for the answer can you source your info ? Where did you get the 3%??

    • @markw563
      @markw563 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I miscalculated it was actually 1.5%. Here is a the web address of an astronomy site called Calsky www.calsky.com/cs.cgi . There you can input time and date and your location and find positions and apparent views of solar system objects. The Sun's apparent size was 0.527 degrees while the Moon's was 0.535 degrees. The difference between the two objects was 0.008 degrees, divide that by the size of the Moon and you get 0.008/0.527 = 0.0149, which is 1.49%

    Great video! Yeah, I know the feeling of fumbling when the totality came. I had my telescope(old Edmunds Astroscan mounted on a tripod. By design its not a tripod friendly scope, especially with a camera(sony nex5n) but its what I had. With filter I was getting great pics when totality came I panicked with camera settings and moved it off target, and couldn't find it again.. Epic fail! Said screw it and just watched the amazing show, clearly saw Venus and Juipter. Cooling was significant as totality approached. The color shift and low light made the landscape look as if it was Mars. Was in SC just south of the Congaree river.

    • @AlanBrockImages
      @AlanBrockImages 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So I was about to really blast this comment, but then it occurred to me that this may be a genuine question and not some of that flat earth nonsense. The sky is dark because of principles of photography. The sun is SO bright that cameras simply cannot capture the detail of it without first placing a filter over your lens or telescope that darkens everything. It's like a dark pair of sunglasses for your camera. With this filter in place, it significantly darkens everything. This means that the sun will now be dim enough to safely photograph. However, it also means that the surrounding sky is also darkened and now appears black.

      It isn't the moon, the moon is translucent and I have seen only half the moon during the day and where the other half was supposed to be, it was clear blue sky. And I recall that I have seen this many times in my life but never thought about it before. The moon is its own light source and you can verify that.

      Since you had the balls to say something stupid like that Bill, back it up. A little education goes a long way, Buddy. Maybe it's time you educate the world. Have you got a degree in astrophysics? That would help. I"m on your side. If you feel strongly about your idiot ideas you should submit a paper to the journal SCIENCE and get published, document the evidence man, PROVE IT. This is your chance to finally make your mark and prove you're not an idiot. If you're right, I will agree this is revolutionary! OMG Please get that published and move above the cheesy soap box of TH-cam commentary, where all you find are common trolls like me, you need to get serious with this crap and have an open debate with the scientific community. You know the truth must be told, Galileo was ostracized for it, it's your turn- buck up my man, take some risks beyond risking appearing stupid, which you just did. No, you need to get serious and get published and put the Nay Sayers to rest once and for all. Or do the next best thing and just shut your mouth.

      Anne, It so happened that this particular eclipse occurred on a day when the moon was nearest the earth. Sometimes the moon is farther away because its orbit is elliptical. When it's farther away it barely, or even does NOT cover the sun entirely, but leaves a ring or "annulus" of sunlight, those are called "annular" eclipses. This time it was so close to the earth it MORE than covered the sun, it had room to spare. So it covered the sunlight, kept moving of course, and eventually uncovered it again. Just as you can cover a mountain with your hand near your face, the distance to the moon is vital in how the eclipse appears to us, and how long it covers the sun.

      Is this 2017? Are we really dealing with flat-earthers? That's both hilarious and deeply sad. Great video Alan, I know exactly what you mean about being overwhelmed with how brief it was and how much there was to do in that small time. I had all kinds of plans for what I wanted to do during totality and basically none of them happened.

My son recorded the changes visible at Happy Valley. He posted his video here: th-cam.com/video/SGjPQoT6oiA/w-d-xo.html I hope you will give it a look, it is some of what your drone would have captured.

      Flat earthers as a whole have a huge distrust of authority/government, have zero or very little understanding of science and/or how certain scientific principles work, and some have the false notion that they know something important and they believe it's their job/mission/duty to spread the truth
      so, they don't have any evidence. What they call evidence is simply attempts at discrediting existing evidence for a globe earth.

    • @blackbirdpie217

      Mr. Tarantino, even though the sun is being blocked by the moon, the outer atmosphere
      of the sun isn't completely. You can see the broad rays of gasses around
      the sun only when the sun itself is blocked from view during the
      eclipse. So the moon is heavily back-lit. The brightness of this corona
      is many times brighter than the moon which is not being lit by the sun
      at all- it has its "back" to the sun so the only light reaching the moon
      is earthlight- the light reflected off the earth and back to the moon
      and then back to us. It isn't much. Our eyes and cameras are generally
      stopped down or compensated to the much brighter light level behind the
      moon, and although the moon is barely lit, it is too dim compared to the
      level of the outer corona of the sun, so the moon appears black. It is
      possible to readjust the camera's exposure to the moon's level. Open up
      the stops on the cameras, and the sun's corona will be of course, "blown
      out" a photographer's term meaning way over-exposed. There is another
      photo trick, to use multiple exposures, some correctly exposing the
      corona, others correctly exposing the moon. Then pick the best shots for
      each level and combine them into one photo. A fellow named Dennis
      Sprinkle did this, you can see his photo here: www.metabunk.org/attachments/upload_2017-8-22_12-8-34-png.28426/

      Maybe when they invent a camera with 20-30 EV dynamic range, maybe then such imaging will be possible. Until then, technology can only do so much... Simply put: the sun is really really really really really really bright.

      Thanks for commenting on my video and giving it a higher interaction rate, thus ranking it higher in TH-cam's search algorithm! First of all, do you have problems reading? At 0:08 there is a caption in the upper left corner telling you EXACTLY where in the video that the eclipse footage starts. Second, you saw what my thumbnail of the video looked like and yet you clicked anyway. You're really a special brand of stupid. Can't read or understand pictures.
