I certainly like Prine alone on stage but these musicians are my favorite accompanying band for him. John's voice goes very well with steel, in my opinion.
John was playing at a local venue 17 miles from the house one cold February evening. I had planned on attending but the ice on the road and sickness creeping in, I said oh well I will catch him on the flip side as I had traveled all over to see various artists. However a mere 60 days later he was gone. It’s been hard to listen knowing I could have x off the list from my rusted bucket.I now make it a point to listen to 5-10 JP songs every day. John had a gift. Thank you sir! Will see you at the Tree of Forgiveness. Oh and hug all your mom’s sisters.Mine too❤
JOHN PRINE, OCT 1946 to APRIL 2020, R.I.P. I love this video because it gives us a glimpse into the heart and soul of the human being John Prine truly was. Some humans really are human. John Prine has been called a "songwriter's songwriter" so many times it has become cliche. When singer-songwriters as highly regarded as Bob Dylan (“the poet of a generation"), Steve Goodman, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash and dozens of others cite John Prine as one of the best of the breed it makes you wonder why he wasn’t better known. Yet it does lend credence to the claim made by many that the reason he wasn’t was because he never "sold out" in an industry where riches await talented musicians willing to follow commercial formulas for writing music geared to radio airplay and music videos. John Prine chose to follow a road less traveled, writing diverse songs straight from his heart that he wanted to write for himself and his legions of devoted fans who just wanted to listen to "John Prine music" in whatever form he wanted to write at any given time. Prine could write about social justice, against war and in support of popular causes with the best of them but he never dwelled in those places long enough to be typecast as a "protest singer." Often he chose to accomplish with humor and tongue in cheek what others did with anger. John Prine couldn't because fundamentally Prine just wasn’t an angry person. A careful listening to the lyrics of "Bruised Orange" (aka, "Chain of Sorrow") one of the rare John Prine songs where he seems to be signing in genuine anger reveals that actually he is singing out in warning AGAINST the futility of anger and bitterness over the seeming injustices of life. It's a true story from his own boyhood in suburban Chicago and a good reminder to all of us. It’s also a very moving song and a performance from a band that absolutely rocks with talent. •Sticks-of-TNT 🧨
This album came out at a rough time in my life, and I spent a lot of time listening very closely to the whole thing. The line in this song about sitting on a park bench, kissing the girl with the black hair, and having your head shout down at your heart - that resonated.
An older work-friend asked me to go see John in 1989. I had never heard of him, so he made be several Live/Mix cassettes so I could get a little familiar with a few songs. I was immediately and completely enthralled and saw him 3 times between then and his passing. Sharing this genius’ work with my children and others has been one of the great experiences of my life. Sharing music in general is a passion, but John in particular, just like he was shared with my by Clay!
ah ah ah....back in July 2021 I along with my lovely wife contracted Covid 19. The booster shot I had received only ten days prior to testing positive saved my life, so the doc told me. I was lucky along with my wife, but ah, John...ah...ah.....what is there to say? You can throw your hands in the air and say what does it matter......you knew me....even though we never met, you knew me right from the start......I Lost my mom only three months before we lost you......2020 robbed me so bad......mom gave me so much and you reminded me so much of what she had given....
