"There's a hole in Daddy's arm, where all the money goes", probably the most powerful, heartbreaking line in a song I've ever heard, especially after he tells you how "the kids run around wearing other people clothes". God how I miss this truth teller of a man.

Over the last twenty years I have hiked over 26,000 miles on the Appalachian and other long trails. Many veterans attempt thru-hikes to try to get their heads together. I can't even begin to tell you the stories that I have heard. Please, I ask you as a veteran, think twice before you support another war.

Thru hiking is good for the soul until you get off the trail. It pauses your life and can be healing but never fixed anything for me. If you’ve got PTSD, you need therapy. Seen too many veterans destroy themselves with whiskey because they’re too proud to ask for help
John Prine died today of this horrible virus and when he just began to tour again. I'm sitting here crying for the loss of this wonderful storyteller.

Canadian vet here . 2 tours in Afghanistan 1 in Hait , the last one I was on messed me up real bad physically to.. I got hooked on opiates when I got back. I was shooting Dilaudid and morphine.. almost 4 years clean . This song is often hard for me to listen to damnit. Much love from Canada

You deserve to be very proud of yourself, and I so hope you are! One step at a time will become a week, a month, another year. !! "Sam Stone" is hard for so many of us to hear. My son's godfather--a war correspondent in Vietnam--told me recently that he's teaching himself to play it on his guitar. I'm 81 now, in North Carolina, and "Hello in There" is poignant.. But, to me, JP's music & lyrics make every song a unique treasure.

I think it means the kids are wearing second-hand clothes due to lack of resources. While the father is using most of the available income to buy the drug.
My wife died Dec 12th 23 in our bedroom in my arms. My girl introduced me to John Prine and since I lost my love I fine myself seeking out his and Merle Hagard songs as her and I both played and sang many evenings under the veranda with smiles on our mouths and love for each other in our hearts and souls....God knows I miss her with everything I am.

49 years ago TODAY, I helped my First FELLOW Veteran off the Street. 3 Tours as a Combat Medic since then, I've brought almost 300 homeless Vets in with my own dime. Nearly same number on Uncle Sam's dime. GOD help me keep serving til my last breath. AIRBORNE.

A friend turned me on to him in the 70s but forgot all those deep songs and started listening again. Sam Stone got me hooked back then, but Souviniers, Hello in There, Granpa was a carpenter, all resonate with the hard facts of life for average people.
I think pretty much everyone has realized his greatness since the 70s.
I am 44 & so glad I was turned onto him.at a young age. I was fortunate enough to see him perform live in Ashland Ky at the Paramount Art Center in 94. It wss my first night out after giving birth to my son who is now 25.
Is possibly the most soul wrenching song ever written. Prine's debut is a masterpiece. Gonna miss this man. R.I.P. John!

PTSD is so complicated and the symptoms in people are so varied. Most of the people I know who live with PTSD were never in the military or combat. I know I wasn't.

I first heard John Prine on a PBS special in December of 1982. I went to the record store the next day and bought Prime Prine. I brought it home, put it on the turntable, plugged in my earphones, sat in a chair and closed my eyes. When Sam Stone came on, I began to cry. I was 19. And I wept like I'd never wept before.
I'm listening to this song on the night John died. I'm staying up all night listening to his music. I'm drinking beer and I thought I'd be crying into it. But I'm not. I am heartened by a quote of John's I saw on Twitter tonight. He says: "I guess I just process death differently than some folks. Realizing you’re not going to see that person again is always the most difficult part about it. But that feeling settles, and then you are glad you had that person in your life."
No, I'm not crying tonight. I am grateful. I'm glad John hung around long enough to share his music with a whole new generation. And I'm happy he no longer has to suffer.

I first heard this song in 1972 when I was 16 and already in my first rehab. 2years later I was staring at my draft card thinking about how much money I was going to save on heroin by going to Nam. Clean and sober today by the grace of God.
I'm 74 years old and served in the Marines from July 1962 until September 1966. When I was discharged, I had the G.I. Bill that got me through college but back then, no one talked about PTSD, you just dealt with it as best you could. I believe I could have used some help back then.
life of riley Just to inform you, In 1974 when you turned 18 the draft was ended. It ended on Janurary 27, 1973. Please admit your mistake. I don't like people who steal the value of veterans who served and died for our Country. To many of my close friends died in that hell hole.
@@denniswise1200 You are wrong! Draft cards were still issued to us in 1974. No one was actually drafted into the U.S. Army that year but it certainly was possible. I feared tricky Dick Nixon would reinstate the draft and re-ignite the war. So I worked hard to be re-classified by my local draft board from 1A status to 4G, "Surviving son of a deceased veteran ineligible for service during peacetime", since all our international conflicts are "conflicts", not "wars" officially declared by Congress. I hoped my new status would keep me from dying via Nixon's fiat. And, my draft number was 41 or 43: too high not to worry. Somewhere I still have my damned draft cards - all three of them: 1H, 1A, and 4G.

My friend John.
I first heard & saw John Prine at a little tavern in Chicago in the 70s when he was first starting out. He sang 'Sam Stone', 'Paradise', & several other songs. I was totally blown away by his music & am still blown away to this day. Words aren't enough to describe the brilliance, power, & beauty of his songs. Simple, pure, & honest. He made the world a better place & left us with the precious gift of his music. We've lost one of the greatest, may he rest in peace.
Not only his songs but his since of humor and sarcasm. He's Bob Dylan whith out the attitude problem.

Jeff, 1974 sounds about right But I can't say for sure. As for the place, it's been 45+ years so I can't say for sure, but who knows ? We might have been there at the same place, same time !! He was so special, I feel privileged to have seen him when he was just starting out.
@Catherine Smith Earl of Old Town, Quiet Knight, the Old Town School of Folk Music where common places that I would have been with my parents. My dad played Bluegrass banjo. I've got Angel of Montgomery and Sam Stone in the practice cue. I swear I memorized the melodies of songs sitting in the shows. I was a very impressionable young man. I've been playing guitar as a hobbyist since 12 years old and now I'm 65. I finally got good at singing! I had to learn that I'm baritone only. I also took a couple lessons.

I was born in 1979, and in the early 80’s my parents would play this record over and over again while cleaning the house on a Saturday with all the windows open. Those were good times and I’ll always love his music.
I was born in '82, I have similar memories. My folks would play this album all the time when I was little. Good times. A sad day today.

I am 59 and I struggle every fucking day...I keep on hoping things will get better...gave up tobacco 14 years ago.....cocaine almost 30 years....alcohol 15 years....and things do get easier as you care less....but that really sucks....wish I could get focused.

MDMA worked for me 30 years ago to refuel my spirit and appreciate all of the positives in my life. I’d still take it if I had some but I’d test it (readily available) some all the horrible drugs out there. I just went to The Sphere with my daughter see Dead and Co no drugs or alcohol but I was high as hell. There are paths.

There is just so much B.S. in the U.S. that guys like John represented what is good about America : Honesty / Reliability / Integrity / Virtue / Fair-Mindedness...the list goes on and on. (I lived in Vancouver in '74 and a buddy from Vermont who was a Vietnam Veteran introduced me to this American Ditty.) (And sang it 18 hours of the day!)
I am so sad I can hardly breathe. I remember hearing Sam Stone when I was about six and it changed me forever. I suddenly knew that the world was a beautiful place even at its saddest. People deserve to be loved just because they do. That we can’t judge who people are by what they do without walking in their shoes.

I drove John from the Commercial Holtel in Edmonton to the King Eddie in Calgary 1980. I still remember two of the jokes He told me. One of the best days of my life. John was hilarious. He wanted to know what I was doing to my beer when I dumped in some tomato juice. When I explained hair of the dog slightly smoother we became friends. And I told Him a couple of jokes. It was a great day!!!!
such a touching song. My grandpa was in WW2 in the Pacific Theater, my dad in the Korean war. I had a neighbor on my street that came from the Vietnam war. I was only maybe 8 years old when I saw my neighbor, Vietnam vet take a hatchet to his motorcycle and fought it in the driveway like it was the enemy. Something I will never forget.

I listen to this song to remember the sacrifices made for us to have this extended weekend. So many died for our freedoms and many went through what Sam did trying to forget the horrors they saw.
He is so young here and so shy he can't lift his head. He was still at the stage where he was surprised by all the attention. He was one of the greatest story tellers ever. He had a knack of writing about his experiences and life that was so very simple, so very relatable, that you understood the lyrics without having to decode them. They say that a picture paints a thousand words. Well, "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes" are 11 words that paint a picture that speaks volumes.

John Prine ;tunes were the first guitar picking tunes I learned. Sam Stone, Hello in There, Paradise. Dozens of others. Now, 40 years later. I still like picking up the guitar and playing these tunes. He is a hero of songwriting and simple guitar patterns to hold them together. It was all about the story, keeping it real. I was lucky to meet John in a bar in San Jose, CA, Doc Watson was playing that evening. John sat down next to me at the bar. I looked at him for a moment and said, Hey, aren't you John Prine? He just said Yup, and went up on stage to play with Doc. We shared a beer later.

I'm a 61 year old " hippie".. raised my kids and adopted a few from other people who loved babies, but, couldn't handle "kids".. and now I have a wonderful group of grandchildren..all raised listening to "Sam Stone" under fully understanding the song. Don't forget..there are STILL confirmed sightings of Americans belong held in Viet Nam. Peace.

Thank you John! You helped me thru a rough time in my life and helped me understand my husband who committed suicide in 2015 and left our 1 year old daughter. I'm at peace. God bless you Mr Prine. You are singing for God now

For me, there are two songs here: The one I heard the first time, and thought was brilliant, and showed me a world I'd never known.
The second one was what this turned into after my friend Axel died of a heroin overdose. That's a completely different song. Can't hear the first one anymore.

I am a Veteran who worked with other Veterans struggling with addiction. Sam Stone represents so many. They deserve all our respect, the same as previous wars and “conflicts.” We didn’t see or do what they endured…stop any judgement. Thank you for this true song!

I had the privilege of seeing John play in a bar in Lexington Ky in the 1970's or 80's, not sure. I will never forget it. He was one of a kind.
