I don't understand the statement that "more things are turning", because stock TJ and JL don't come with lockout front hubs, so everything in the front end and back end are turning all the time, they just aren't connected together until you place them in 4H or 4L. This is more like the Quadratrac transmission/transfer case they put in the old Wagoneers.

Been debating what to do if I won a lottery and could get a new vehicle. Seeing this insight to the 392 definitely shows me that I want to do a diesel swap on my LJ and ride eternal, shiny and chrome.
You should have activated Offroad + mode if you were looking for crisp sporty shifting. It doesn't have the same 850RE transmission as a standard JL. They upgrade it to the 8HP75 that's designed to handle more power than that of a 392. It also comes with 3.73 gears from the factory so a gear change would give you more of the performance your looking for.
The Offroad + wasn’t working and neither were the paddle shifters. It just said unavailable for some reason. We tried manual mode on the shifter as well and no go
@@LiteBrite Not sure what that’s all about. Offroad + and the paddle shifters work in all 4X modes so it sounds like something is going on with his Jeep.
Agreed. We couldn’t get the Offroad+ to work, but we do hope to experience it when we get the chance to set up a three-way drag race. Should be pretty exciting!
How is that going to add more wear on the drive train? On a regular modern Wrangler, the hubs are always locked in and everything is turning, even when you're in 2WD.
Hey, I'm spritely!!! LOL, it's the fact my wife is 5'2" with heels! :P Those #LetzRollOffroad rock slides took a major beating on the Rubicon Trail and protected the Jeep like a champ. I can't lie, it was a bit easier to get in & out with those slides sticking out. Thank you SO MUCH for the hard work y'all put in to get this finished in time. Can't imagine taking the original version on that relentlessly brutal trail without the long arms, 37"s & rock sliders.
The 392 would definitely cost more if you were to try to build it to the level of our JLUR. 😊 We bought our JLUR for $42K in 2018. AMW Hemi swap is $35k. Current Jeep 392s start at $75K with no added options, and are currently being marked up to around $90K by just about every dealership. You’re already $13K higher than ours, except our setup has 2HI & is more powerful.
The 392 just needs to be tuned properly. Also when you sell the 392 the vin is attached to that motor. If you do a hemi swap and try and sell keep in mind the vin is still attached to the v6…good luck recouping that dough!

Plus you are right Jeep Corp knows you are getting ready for a change... So the hell with Jeep and Hello to Ford Bad Ass Tough..... Kevin Keep up the hard work brother. Both my sons and I still believe you are one of the best wheelers we have ever seen... You climb shit with badass stupid recluse abandon... In other words "Bad f'en ass.... The Banks boys....
Not that any of you need to be told this but it is nice to see Chris's attention to detail. That makes all of the difference in the world, I know when I get my next Jeep ill make the drive to the daycare to get my work done. 😃 I can't wait.....👍🏻
Glad you guys got a chance to test drive a 392 before I wasted all that money. Just going to have to do a proper Hemi and trany swap like you...great videos and really like the addition of Chris...
Just a few things i do not like about 392: Ring pinion 3.73 gearing instead of 4.10 TCase 2.72:1 instead of 4:1 Although 392 has alot of tq and it's tq converter will help in crawling, it's still extremely advantageous to have lower gearing, if no other reason than to crawl more slowly for better control. It's supposed to be a Rubicon rock "crawler". TCase full time all wheel drive, meaning no FAD, but it still has the same two piece front inner axle shaft with collar instead of stronger solid one piece. Still has weaker multi piece front axle housing where that FAD would be (spot/plug welded housing sleeve there as in all JLs and JTs). Beadlock capable wheels but with so little backspacing that it cannot accommodate 35+" tires. (addressed though if you get xtreme recon with 8" wheels). No other option color interiors such as tan. Would've been nice i have other interior color options in $80k vehicle. The gold stitching is tacky in my opinion. I sound like the scrooge but these really humbugged me allot.
I get your point of view on the 392 vs the step child, however a quick chat about the cost time and effort involved to reliably swap a v6 jlu to a 6.4 should have happened in this vid. Much more money and headache. Upgrade a couple things in the stock 392 and it’s gonna rip the same. Plus the time, stress and probably money savings are a big point. No 2wd is a huge downer though, not sure about that issue.
The 392 would actually cost more than our Jeep did. We purchased our JLUR for $42K in 2018 and the AMW Hemi swap is $35K. We retain the 2HI and have a bit more power. The 392 Rubicons are currently selling for around $90K. Most other upgrades are the same for either vehicle. But you do get a warranty of sorts with the factory route. But we’re also 2 years and about 60K miles on our swap with no issues. So it’s all really about preference.
@@LiteBrite However, if you had bought a loaded up Rubicon in 2018, it would have been about $53K. I know because I owned one. The 392 comes from the factory loaded up and many dealers are selling them for MSRP if you order it, which is roughly $77. So the real price for the engine, suspension and frame upgrade is about $24K which is $11K less than the AMW swap and you have a full factory warranty.
@@LiteBrite Even more reason to have quickly reviewed a cost comparison between the two in this vid then, either way it’s relevant content to this vid. There’s obviously also the fact of the other components beefed up in a factory 392 vs conversion but since I don’t know every component America’s a most wanted upgraded during the swap I couldn’t argue which was a better value.
Just saw that the Tazer will give 392 owners line lock and rwd options! So the no 2wd complaint is out now too. I still think a factory 392 is a better bargain to an aftermarket swap, especially after adding a few upgrades.
In 4wd auto, the Jeep is in 2wd most of the time, and only engages the transfer case temporarily when the rear wheels slip. It shouldn't have any additional wear compared to 2wd Hi.
I have been wanting to know your thoughts between the FCA and AMW Hemis. If you would not buy a 392, what new Jeep would you buy? Would you do the 3.6 and repeat? Chris is an artist.
@@LiteBrite you mentioned AMW using a better transmission but they use the 8HP75 as does FCA for the R392. Seems like the only difference would be the tune, and you guys know how to modify that ;-)

There is a local 4x4 shop that did a bunch of 392 conversions. I believe that they were in the $20 range. Not sure the exact price, but it was considerable.
Well I liked your comments on the 392 Jeep its to bad that Jeep couldn't build a Jeep to your likings. Anyway thanks for the info on it. Maybe the powers that be at Jeep would consider your build with out any more cost to the customer because as it is people are going to modify there Jeep so they can go places like you do. Anyway have good trip and make more cool videos 📹 thanks Ray
I think a tune exhaust etc. on the 392 will totally kick the bronco raptor‘s buttt, I also think the 392 would be an awesome daily driver, it’s the best Jeep they’ve ever built, And in regards to the front axle jeep did what it did to protect their liabilities & the customer purchasing the vehicle, I think Jeep was brilliant to make this full-time four-wheel-drive I’ve driven plenty of powerful V-8 swaps and when you jump on them they will go sideways on the highway so I think this was brilliant for full-time 4 Wheel Dr. and comparing a fully modified jeep that’s been swapped out to a high horsepower V8 that’s a totally different world than one coming from the factory, I say for the person who can afford a new 392 go for it, use it however you wish and be proud as hell of it because it’s pretty awesome what has accomplished, kudos to Jeep and its engineers. So the folks that are considering a 392 I say listen to yourself and what you want not what other people compared to extremely modified jeeps. He wouldn’t buy it but I would. Kudos to you Jeep😃
What about the cost factor? If someone were to buy a regular rubicon and do the full 'proper' hemi swap and get it to the level of the step-child, would the cost be similar? I am assume that at this point, you guys probably poured close to $150K on it? I am in the market for a 392 (2023 / 20th anniversary edition), and would love to compare some options with pricing comparison. That would be an awesome video!

you guys NEED one of those. the last time you showed the stepchild it was for all intensive purposes , broken in half. back halfing it would be a temporary remedy
I don't blame jeep for not inviting you guys haha, you threw it in their face how you're buying a bronco and as they were on easter safari, you guys were chillin'g out with the bronco boys!!
Can you guys do a review of some of the aftermarket things you have put on the stepchild? Things like your PRP seat covers, soft top, bumper and winch, etc?
@@boughtnotbuiltoffroad7784 They do make for a slightly smoother drive when running on tarmac and hard pack gravel roads. Which is probably why they are there to begin with. They just needed to be beefier for the off road stuff.
Regarding 392... Paddle shifter are nice...but why put them on a tranny that cannot really utilize their quickness? Seems like a sure way to get the consumer to change out the trans soon. There are so much stuff on back order. I’ve been waiting for 6 weeks for my drop brackets for my Comanche. There are not enough workers due to COVID layoffs. Material costs have gone way up. Etc. on with the video to see if you two bought the 392
The Bronco has the explorer transmission which will probably hold it back as well. The 0-60 runs on TH-cam for the 2.7L are in the 8 sec range. That’s seems pretty slow since this 392 will do it in 4.5.
@@LiteBrite you need to compare apples to apples. If you tune the bronco, you need to tune the 392 and put it in 2wd with the tazer. The 392 will smoke the bronco.
It's actually good to have a little extra compression available on the front bumps, so when you go down a hill, and land on one front wheel with all the weight of the vehicle, it has a little extra give to absorb the impact with. Well ... as long as the extra give is absorbed by the bump stop and not the shock.
The wrangler Rubicon 392 would definitely beat there aftermarket 6.4l hemi in a drag race mostly because it's all wheel drive It wouldn't spin it will pretty much just hook and go I've seen a few after market 6.4l struggle to put the power to the ground from a dead stop

😁🤙
Beautiful Jeep David, I want one just like it🤙🇺🇸
Thanks for this assessment!! I was torn between a badlands and the hemi rubicon. The Badlands it shall be!!!
might not have the power yours does, but also cost about half as much
Not by the time you are done making it as capable as mine. It’ll be more by a lot
Perfect review on the new jeep 392... Kids you are spot on once you get your Bronco with the 2.7 tween turbo and take it to 5 Star Tune performance and they take it up to 600 wheel HP and 700 pounds of torque game over....
Just a few things i do not like about 392:
Ring pinion 3.73 gearing instead of 4.10
TCase 2.72:1 instead of 4:1
Although 392 has alot of tq and it's tq converter will help in crawling, it's still extremely advantageous to have lower gearing, if no other reason than to crawl more slowly for better control.
@@LiteBrite If you order a 392 from a reputable dealer, or one that you have a relationship with, you should not pay more than sticker.
I’m really starting to like this Chris guy. Great attention to detail on the fender bolt, and he is getting more comfortable in front of the camera.
Ya he’s awesome
Whose Luke?
@@da443-galmond4
Aw, he's a nobody .. just some tatty moisture farmer off of Tatooine ...
@@da443-galmond4 whoops, autocorrect got me. “Like” not “Luke”
Depends on what your goals would be, but we do love the idea of a diesel Jeep!
@@LiteBrite you mentioned AMW using a better transmission but they use the 8HP75 as does FCA for the R392. Seems like the only difference would be the tune, and you guys know how to modify that ;-)
Thanks for getting back to Jeep mods/builds, tip and tricks. That and the 4 wheeling is why we started watching! Also, Chris is a great addition.
Thought you guys really bought it!! Lol. Chris good catch on that fender bolt Great Work!! Still like your hemi though.
Love our hemi
Watch the oil drain plug. It sticks way down and catches on stuff and unscrews itself.
Chris, you are truly an artist, the quality of your work is outstanding!
I just picked up a 21 v6 rubicon. The full time 4WD is what put me off of the 329.
Hey kids! Good to see ya again! So..., these newer 2.7's kinda like the ol'Corvair's motors...? Which were little monster for it's time...! (I had a little mobster, decades ago!) The "Orphanage" is coming along just fine & you're treatin' the "kids" well & you've a great care giver..., lol! Love you guys & catch ya later...
There is a local 4x4 shop that did a bunch of 392 conversions. I believe that they were in the $20 range. Not sure the exact price, but it was considerable.
I love the direction your channel is going in ! Keep the great content coming !
Shoutout to LetzRoll! An extremely awesome shop here in East Mesa! They did great work on my Cherokee!
You hands 🙌🏽 down have amazing and consistent content. Stoked on your upcoming projects, happy for your success and forget all them haters.
Love how you explain the reasoning👍.I Always look forward to you two uploads.
This is literally the best possible timing to be able to watch this a soon as I wake up on the 4th of July 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🎉🎉
Happy 4th of July everyone!!!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I'm also guessing the supra has smaller diameter tires. Chris, you should build an ramp for flex testing.
We will when metal prices aren’t through the roof
@@boughtnotbuiltoffroad7784 use the stair risers you took out of the daycare?!? Lol!!
What were those sleeves Chris had on? Thanks for wearing the safety glasses.
You guys need to air down the opposite back tire when flex testing. The weight transfers to the opposite back corner. (remember the metal cloak flex trailer)
I like the different take on the 392 Kevin, you most likely won’t get a concise, solid review. I would like to see the Jeep performance comparison in another video. Nice job guys! Back to “Welder Yoga”. 😆
That would be the coolest race! Yes all three, make it happen!!
you guys NEED one of those. the last time you showed the stepchild it was for all intensive purposes , broken in half. back halfing it would be a temporary remedy
Chris is bad ass! Love watching him work.
I don't blame jeep for not inviting you guys haha, you threw it in their face how you're buying a bronco and as they were on easter safari, you guys were chillin'g out with the bronco boys!!
Love the addition of Chris.
Can you guys do a review of some of the aftermarket things you have put on the stepchild? Things like your PRP seat covers, soft top, bumper and winch, etc?
Music choice is perfect!!!! Thank you Brett!!
All wheel drive only is a bummer. That’s going to hurt your freeway mpg. I had a all wheel drive zj on 35’s with the v8. It was a blast to drive
thanks for including the Chris content. Please always include Chris content.
Dam I didn’t know that it was 4wd all the time with front cv’s why didn’t nobody else mention that ? 👀🧐
I know. Front CV’s are an upgrade.
Fiat told them not to🤣
@@Truth_Spoken they aren’t an upgrade when they are that small.
@@boughtnotbuiltoffroad7784
They do make for a slightly smoother drive when running on tarmac and hard pack gravel roads.
Which is probably why they are there to begin with.
They just needed to be beefier for the off road stuff.
Yes, I just know it from this channel
Regarding 392... Paddle shifter are nice...but why put them on a tranny that cannot really utilize their quickness? Seems like a sure way to get the consumer to change out the trans soon.
Good Call Chris on finding the 10mm and providing a solution for the fender bolt. Bet you get a Shout-Out from the Owner(and maybe a bottle of whatever your fave is).
Great video! with honest commentary from Kev and Brit and yeah that's probably the reason why Jeep didn't call them, Ain't nobody mad at nobody!! this is where "it is what it is" is applicable.. Keep up the good work.
What are the name of the bits he was using to remove the powder coating?
I was gonna say same thing as last comment. Solid choice by having Chris on your team . Also, 392 trick was funny as hell. Would you also talk about CJ7 s a little bit . Nobody put them in test a lot.
I thought you called it a Bluebicon. I had to replay it. It is very blue. Thanks for your critique, but do you think the 392 is a good base for a awesome build? I'm finally home from work and able to watch your video. Happy 4th.
I think once the pricing and mark ups fall off, it could provide a solid base. But we’re curious to see what the aftermarket world comes up with for it.
Chris you need more of your own episodes, even your own channel. The work you do is amazing and fun to watch. You are meticulous in your work. And post a video of the house party, please!!
With his attention to detail and top quality workmanship, Chris would make an excellent Aviation Maintenance Technician! He is an excellent addition to your channel! I think you hit a home run with your new home and shop! 😎
OK, have you checked out their hybrid model of the Rubicon?
Should be out now.
Yeah.
You might like it. OK
Chris have you ever used “steel it” weldable primer
Ya we have. It’s on my ultra4
That Bronco with a little tune will smoke that 392! Seen some Rangers with some tunes haulass! Have a great time at the reunion. Chris parting with Kevin's dad!😂😂
If you want to tune that Bronco, then you need to contact your legislator/representative about the EPA and the RPM Act. Great video 👍
So your saying you can tune-a-fish, but cannot tune-a-Bronco without the government approval?
@@da443-galmond4 Their rules, not mine. Check out SEMA and the RPM Act.
Okay but would you buy one if you didnt already have the Step Child? Also put a ruler on the lift of the forklift that way you don’t have to keep using a tape measure
There are so much stuff on back order. I’ve been waiting for 6 weeks for my drop brackets for my Comanche. There are not enough workers due to COVID layoffs. Material costs have gone way up. Etc. on with the video to see if you two bought the 392
What year jeep Rubicon are the best to buy for off road ? Thanks !
The small touches on a build that matter 👍👍. Received my E3 email, cool closeout video looking forward to next year. 👍👊
Um.. the SAS toyota in the background during the discussion of the new sliders. Tell me more, That's sweeeeeeeet looking
The Bronco has the explorer transmission which will probably hold it back as well. The 0-60 runs on TH-cam for the 2.7L are in the 8 sec range. That’s seems pretty slow since this 392 will do it in 4.5.
Definitely agree! We believe that tuning the Bronco is where it would likely give the 392 a run for its money. 😊
@@LiteBrite you need to compare apples to apples. If you tune the bronco, you need to tune the 392 and put it in 2wd with the tazer. The 392 will smoke the bronco.
Chris do you know how to leaf delete/4 link the rear of a midsize truck?
Jeep all the way !!!
The front air bumps aren’t set up correctly. There’s still 2 inches of compression left on the shaft.
It's actually good to have a little extra compression available on the front bumps, so when you go down a hill, and land on one front wheel with all the weight of the vehicle, it has a little extra give to absorb the impact with.
Well ... as long as the extra give is absorbed by the bump stop and not the shock.
Most people would just weld those rock slides in without caring about the next guy, good call with the fender bolts
The wrangler Rubicon 392 would definitely beat there aftermarket 6.4l hemi in a drag race mostly because it's all wheel drive It wouldn't spin it will pretty much just hook and go I've seen a few after market 6.4l struggle to put the power to the ground from a dead stop
We’ve never had an issue putting the power down
@@LiteBrite can't wait to see the race you guys keep putting out awesome videos ❤️
