Cycling Chile's Incredible Atacama Desert & Coast! // A Bike Touring Short Film // Part 31 - Chile

  • Having crossed the border from Bolivia to Chile at over 4600 m.a.s.l., we shot down the perfectly paved highway 27 towards San Pedro de Atacama. The incredible sight of the vast Atacama desert basin far below and ahead of us could only be topped by the sight of the 2000 meter high wall we had descended from, behind us. Once again, like in Perú before, we had spent weeks, even months, well above 3000-4000 meters… and it was about time for a change.
    So after two nights in San Pedro, an incredibly touristy but nice town, we set off through the Atacama, the driest non-polar desert in the world, towards the coast of Chile, without knowing what to expect... and what a great ride it was!

      @@jasontomica8938 As it takes a lot of time to edit our videos, they are usually released 3-4 weeks after they happened. In this case, we released the video approximately 3 weeks after the events at the end of the film, meaning the events at the beginning of the film are already two months old, or so.
      Therefore, even if we talk about future events in our films, they will generally already be in the past when the video is released.

    How could someone think of two human creatures traveling in such a long distance trip by only pedalling their bikes? That' s an incredible labor. You are going to be two legends for such an incredibly difficult achievement.

    I am an old man and retired professor who happens to love Chile. But the farthest north I have been is La Serena on my way to the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. I was looking for cycling videos to watch while riding my stationary bike here in the Big Bend of Texas and I stumbled onto your Atacama video. Not only was it breath-taking and enjoyable to watch while I pedaled, but it forced me to add northern Chile to my bucket list. Kudos. And thank you !!!!

    It is so nice to see someone else travelling with their instrument.
    In the last 20 years I always toured with my Sitar on a Bob trailer.
    My wife and I are starting a 3 year tour in April and at the moment I am building a new instrument to take travelling.
    It is definitely not smaller than my Sitar unfortunately, but should allow me to stay happy musically on the road.
    We plan to ride from Germany to Australia then fly to South America and ride to Calgary Canada where I am from.
    Thanks for the great content and inspiration!

    This was a beautiful part of Chile, it must have been great to ride all the way from the top of mountains, down to sea level again ! I had to laugh a little when you said at the end the "South America almost done... " Well, please check how many KM's to Ushuaia you still have to ride, because that is not exactly close, you still have a long ride before you. I am sure you will get there, and Patagonia will be interesting, and then crossing the pampa's to Ushuaia. I hope you have a tailwind all the time, keeping my fingers crossed for you. Cheers !

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, that's true, it's still a lot of kms to Ushuaia. For us it's probably more that it feels like South America is almost over, especially considering it's "only" a few months left after almost a whole year here. 😅

    • @gerardfangeau7162
      @gerardfangeau7162 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Einstein might hav said, time and space is not the same depending on your speed or the way you travel. Three months left may feel short after ten or so riding from North... 😉

    Wow, amazing footage! What happened to Tobi's guitar rack?

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It unfortunately broke (for good) in the south of Bolivia. The aluminum just isn't made for the bad roads 😅
      So we decided to not rebuild it, also not out of steel, but just repack a bit and place the guitar on the back of Tobi's bike.
