Since Longstanding Solitude was removed from its spot as the worst, that moves all the other items on the worst list up a slot and leaves the #10 slot open for a new item. As there's only 19 items, #10 on the best list also has to be #10 on the worst list, meaning Bolstering Lantern is technically on both. It goes without saying, but the fact that there were so few items that one item has to be on BOTH lists is not a sign of a good DLC. Though, I'm not sure I want them adding more if they're willing to add things like War Bonds, either...
it should be noted that electric boomerang doesnt actually do 30% base damage, but rather does 30% of sawmerangs damage (gearbox moment). so it actually does 133% base dmg on the initial hit and 46% base damage on the rapid piercing hits. you can test this
It's baffling how Gearbox not only got nearly EVERY new item description completely wrong but also got them wrong in increasingly hilarious ways. Like, you cannot make this stuff up. Chance Doll has wrong numbers and doesn't actually "upgrade" items? Funny, but harmless. Knockback FIn scales _logarithmically,_ making an already bad item even worse to stack? Hilarious. Electric Boomerang is actually just a reskinned Sawmerang, thus making it much stronger than the description leads on? *Top kek*
I actually got a yellow item off of Chance Doll in one of my runs as Bandit on the sky meadows stage. Good ol Empathy Cores was a neat addition to my run
Chronic expansion is actually really good because you don't need kills to extend it's use, you only need to shoot enemies to extend it. You can have 5 stacks, keep shooting enemies for 1 minute without having to kill and you still keep the stacks. For some reason this doesn't work with the overlord imp, clay dune and void crabs, but every other enemy works.
Even still, the damage isn't good unless you kill a LOT of enemies or you have a fmp. Those enemies that don't work also don't help it in that regard either, so it's not really worth it but it is good scrap.
Actually, it also doesn't work with a bunch of random other enemies for some reason AND the damage boost is calculated using LEVEL ONE BASE DAMAGE If it actually worked as advertised it would pretty good, but as of now it's trash

As proven by rndThursday, the item can be incredibly good and only gets better as you get bigger and more self-sustaining proc chains that kill stuff off-screen. After a loop, you should be getting the damage buff from it almost constantly, and it stacks incredibly well.

The scary thing about Whispers is that it functionally deletes the penalty of Longstanding Solitude as well those two combined in anything past like stage 4 makes the game practically unloseable
I think the design philosophy behind bolstering lantern is that it's not supposed to be a consistent source of damage, but rather more of an oh shit last minute kill everything before they can kill you sort of thing. It's kinda like how you don't pick up elixer for healing, or genesis loop for damage. Now, do I think the execution is great? Hell no. Do I think the idea behind it is serviceable? Yeah.
@CopiHuman lantern is kinda like watered down gloop lol. Instead of a big flashy high damage explosion, it's just a more passive increase in damage. It's basically gloop if it were a white item.
I kinda like it befitting REX similary to how things like Bustling Fungus befits Engineer, or nowadays Bison Steak befits False Son. For that I accept its inclusion. More than some pre-dlc items even.
I'd be inclined to think they saw the red tearstone ring from Dark Souls and thought "hey, people really like that item, we should try doing that in our game" and kinda just left it there
for that to work, the damage buff would have to be way higher and i think that would become too broken on a white item. The effect had to be nerfed since it was a white item, but that made it kinda useless. it probably would've been better as a green, or swap it and war bonds so it gives insane damage and war bonds only gives like one chest.
I'm happy to see someone give Chance Doll the respect it deserves. I swear everytime someones mentions the extremely niche case of "What if the normal drop was a legendary but when it does the better loot pool it makes it something else?" which ignores all the benefits of the item.
yeah, I'm probably one of those people, because yellow items are definitely not better than reds, yellows are green+, that's why you only see it replacing greens from teleporters, if they'd change the order to green -> yellow -> red, people would be much, much happier
Chance Doll just needs to be a bit more clear on what it actually does. When you know how it works, its an amazing item. Especially for people like me who's super into the macro game. Gotta beat that RNG.
@@pham99019/31 reds are decent, the other 12 are niche or straight garbage 5 yellows are decent, the other 5 are basically niche or garbage. Just got a Shatterspleen yesterday from a shrine with Chance Doll, it's the only one I've seen so far so it's gotta be incredibly rare because it's the chance of Chance Doll procking times the chance of getting a legendary item.
I got a knurl from a chance shrine once. Granted it was during the elite aspect glitch where you could pick up infinite amounts of an item, so having 4000 chance dolls probably helped
11:12 I think this was definitely a major goal with this DLC, and I believe SotV had the goal to reduce one-shots with Opal, Safer Spaces, and Power Elixir
Honestly the art direction for all of these items just felt off this entire dlc. Everything just looks off. Either too detailed because of the shrinking down or just weirdly colors
I wish sonorous whispers was a more "fun" item, its definitely the best item in the game. Pumping a bunch more items into a run just doesn't spice up the run the same way that a behemoth or clover does.
It could be fun I think if it worked like Hit List (aka a 'bounty hunt' of sorts), where instead of a % chance of elites to drop items, it picked a random elite every 10 seconds and highlighted it. If you seek it down and kill it within the time limit, you get the item. Would at least give it some interactivity. Alternate idea: The item "breaks" upon entering each stage, and you have to find its 3 pieces marked around each map. Assembling it makes it work as usual, you just have to build it first each stage. Would give it some interactivity and an indirect nerf, by making it not work immediately and costing you time each stage.
I understand why you’d think that, but shaped glass reduces your MAX health by 50%, not your current health. Even if you have half of your health, shaped glass uses the same damage type as Eclipse 8, permanent damage, which reduces your health bar, so if you’re at max health with shaped glass, you’re considered 100% hp
@cameronrodriguez8795 No idea. Maybe ~90 hours with the DLC? Though I often waited to hit the shrines to see if I could get a Chance Doll first, so I think that has a lot to do with it

I wasn't the only one who thought Bolstering Lantern just... didn't look like a vanilla item. At least not a white one. Even red items tend to look simple (Rejuv Rack, Resonance Disc, War Bonds, Clover, Behemoth... all just simple shapes with 1 or 2 colors). It's RoR2 (and really the whole series)' art style. BL looks like it's from a mod that, while definitely had love and effort put into it, didn't quite nail the aesthetic of RoR2. It almost looks like something from the BubbetsItems mod, which has cool item concepts and some that look like they could be from the vanilla game (I'm really a fan of the design of Jellied Soles and pretty much all the new Void items), but many of them have this weird "vibe" to them that clashes with RoR2. Like, if you joined someone using the mod and never played RoR2 before, you'd probably notice some of BubbetsItems didn't really "fit."

Seed of Life revives EVERYONE in multiplayer when used manually. So if the best player in the lobby has it, it's really funny to see 3 noobs get revived. Also it can trigger from bottled chaos, very funny when that happens
Question about lantern: How does it interact with Shaped Glass? Because it would be *really funny* if having Bolstering Lantern and Shaped Glass on at the same time just gave you always-on lantern buff on top of doubled damage.
I have gotten a yellow item from a chance shrine after having something like 10+ dolls. This yellow item if I remember correctly was followed up by a red item.
I feel like he’s looking at the “take damage to get value items wrong”. The intent isn’t that it makes you want to stay low, it’s more like a bandaid for when it happens
I think he gets that, but his point is that, as a veteran of Eclipse 8 on all survivors, he prioritizes dodging and damage reduction, so taking intentional damage on the whole is not in the cards generally. Items that derive their value from being at low percent health negatively synergize with Eclipse and artifact of glass, along with other items that cause you to lose base health, thus making the 25-50% health range even riskier (Rain?) or harder to maintain; and is generally antithetical to the game design in his opinion. Most of the game is about dodging attacks and avoiding damage, as enemy attack power scales far higher than your health does, so it is advantageous to block, dodge, or reduce oncoming damage for this reason.
this is coupled by the fact that such items are dead weight at high health amounts, so for most survivors in most situations, they are either useless, or pigeonhole you into playing the game in a way that is far more conducive to failure.
The point is that if you’re playing well you aren’t getting any value from those kinds of items, and that’s obviously not what you want. Why would I want an item that’s only giving me a buff when I’ve messed up and is doing nothing the rest of the time? If it’s not something like a dio’s that’s actively saving my run then I expect it to have decent uptime so it’s actually helping me otherwise it’s better off as scrap that I can turn into something actually useful.
The problem is that even when you take this into account these items have very poor uptime. If you don't intentionally take damage items like bolstering lantern are not gonna do much damage for you.
Sonorous whispers is the most broken item ever released to my memory even nerfed. But it doesn't get most broken strat ever because to me that will always be old glass plus Topaz brooch when you overshield had it's on OSP so you could stack literal infinite glass and enemies would have to hit you 4 times before you got a kill or any form of healing which with as much glass as you had wasn't likely
Funny thing, I have actually gotten a cherf and a little disciple since dlc dropped from the chance doll. Sale star and chance doll just make runs have so much more good loot. I don't think I've lost a sale star run yet in eclipse
yo dude, if you're feeling burnt out on RoR2, no harm in making content about other games or other stuff you enjoy. I imagine it can be pretty tiring coming up with content for one specific game, especially right now, and it'd be really interesting seeing ur style of video-making on other games / topics
Sonorous whispers should be nerfed ngl. And I think the only way is to add a limit to how many extra items you can get a stage. Maybe make it so it’s capped at 20(+20 each stack) a stage
I like runic lens but I'm pretty sure there is a 'bug'? Right now where you can only have 1 proc at a time. So even with infinite attack speed you'll have to wait for the animation before getting a second meteor even with 100% proc chance.
A thing to note about Chronic Expansion you dont need to keep killing enemies to keep the bonus you just need to keep damaging enemies which counts as staying in combat and you dont need to kill 5 enemies in a short about of time to get another stack just need to kill 5 enemies while in combat, i have been able to get up to 10+ stacks during the tp on stage 2. Also why does ever while in combat items count as being in combat in a different way and WHY DOES CHRONIC EXPANSION JUST LIST THE WRONG NUMBER 😭
I don't understand why everyone thinks sonorous is so broken. You aren't usually getting reds until stage 4, or from moon soup at which point it's useless. If you get it stage 4 you could farm in Gilded infinitely but that's so boring, I'm playing a game to have fun I'll just loop if I need items. It's only strong if you get it stage 1-3. And even then it's not the most busted item ever.
If you get it stage 1 it absolutely is the most busted item ever. You also forgot about the Bazaar cauldrons. And even if you do get it from the stage 4 guaranteed red, you will still get a crap ton of items because of how many elite and boss enemies spawn on the last stages

bolstering lantern being on a top 10 list for the dlc really shows how terrible most of the items were
I think it is worse than many of the items on the worst items list. The biggest issue with it is its uptime is incredibly hard to manage.

I have gotten a yellow item from a chance shrine after having something like 10+ dolls. This yellow item if I remember correctly was followed up by a red item.
3:49 featureman :(
I got a genesis loop from a chance shrine with one chance doll. I was so confused at the time.
Sonorous whispers should only work if the timer is moving
@ that’s fair then
Chance doll and Sale star my beloved
wiki isn't wrong about chance doll, I got a knurl with the item from a shrine. So confused when I first got it lmao
Ive gotten a yellow once from a shrine albeit I had 5 chance dolls and 2 clovers and the run was well over 2 hours.
Funny thing, I have actually gotten a cherf and a little disciple since dlc dropped from the chance doll. Sale star and chance doll just make runs have so much more good loot. I don't think I've lost a sale star run yet in eclipse
thank you grandpa for the info 🥰
yo dude, if you're feeling burnt out on RoR2, no harm in making content about other games or other stuff you enjoy. I imagine it can be pretty tiring coming up with content for one specific game, especially right now, and it'd be really interesting seeing ur style of video-making on other games / topics
I have gotten the yellow (post patch)
8:30, i have in fact gotten this, it also gave me a shatterspleen which was fucking epic
Chance doll is actually a pretty cool item. I honestly just hate the white items this dlc, and a couple of the greens
Sonorous whispers should be nerfed ngl. And I think the only way is to add a limit to how many extra items you can get a stage. Maybe make it so it’s capped at 20(+20 each stack) a stage
I have gotten a yellow from a chance shrine once since the dlc came out
I have gotten an yellow from chance, if u do get one, that means u got nat red and proc ed it
8:36 i can confirm this has happened to me
I got the yellow from a chance shrine it was crazy
Seekers of the Storm gave me bipolar disorder, thanks gearbox!
I've gotten charged perforator from chance doll. Didn't know it was so rare
I like runic lens but I'm pretty sure there is a 'bug'? Right now where you can only have 1 proc at a time. So even with infinite attack speed you'll have to wait for the animation before getting a second meteor even with 100% proc chance.
sale star is just a fancy pinata
A thing to note about Chronic Expansion you dont need to keep killing enemies to keep the bonus you just need to keep damaging enemies which counts as staying in combat and you dont need to kill 5 enemies in a short about of time to get another stack just need to kill 5 enemies while in combat, i have been able to get up to 10+ stacks during the tp on stage 2.
Also why does ever while in combat items count as being in combat in a different way and WHY DOES CHRONIC EXPANSION JUST LIST THE WRONG NUMBER
😭
much cleaner then the worst items list imo, sweet 👍
if you find whispers on stage 1 you know what you have to do.
they really need to implement an item ban list, like on an artifact
I actually had a red turn into a yellow with chance doll one of my first times having it. I was in shambles😭
I got a yellow (titanic kurl) from a shrine of chance while holding the chance doll and thought I glitched the game when it happened.
I have gotten a yellow from a chance shrine. I had like 4 chance dolls
I've gotten a yellow with chance doll before. It's only happened once though.
Ive gotten shatterspleen once from a chance shrine w chance doll
ive only had nom 1-2 once i have gotten agis like 3454325255 times in a row from stage 4 large chests :(
wow, thumbnail lied, chronic expansion was #9, not #10 smh
(video was great btw)
More Origin? Hell yeah.
8:37 i once got a Lil D from a shrine, i took a screenshot so yeah its real
grandpa disputed might have to watch another RndThrusday video explaining why an item is better than he thinks he is (chronic expansion)
