Chronic expansion is actually really good because you don't need kills to extend it's use, you only need to shoot enemies to extend it. Fundamentally speaking, currently the way chronic expansion works makes it absolutely useless under any circumstance and gives It infinite exponential damage with soulbound
interesting note about how the chance doll works, it doesn't actually upgrade the item you would've gotten, before it even chooses what item you get your chance doll gets rolled and if the roll hits then you get a completely different loot pool. in this special loot pool you have a 79% chance of getting a green item, a 20% chance of getting a red item, and a 1% chance of getting a yellow item. this custom loot pool doesn't change if you get more chance dolls, getting more chance dolls just increases the odds that you will get this custom loot pool, and if you have 7+ chance dolls you will get this custom loot pool every time.

I think the design philosophy behind bolstering lantern is that it's not supposed to be a consistent source of damage, but rather more of an oh shit last minute kill everything before they can kill you sort of thing. It's kinda like how you don't pick up elixer for healing, or genesis loop for damage. Now, do I think the execution is great? Hell no. Do I think the idea behind it is serviceable? Yeah.
@CopiHuman lantern is kinda like watered down gloop lol. Instead of a big flashy high damage explosion, it's just a more passive increase in damage. It's basically gloop if it were a white item.
I kinda like it befitting REX similary to how things like Bustling Fungus befits Engineer, or nowadays Bison Steak befits False Son. For that I accept its inclusion. More than some pre-dlc items even.
I'd be inclined to think they saw the red tearstone ring from Dark Souls and thought "hey, people really like that item, we should try doing that in our game" and kinda just left it there
for that to work, the damage buff would have to be way higher and i think that would become too broken on a white item. The effect had to be nerfed since it was a white item, but that made it kinda useless. it probably would've been better as a green, or swap it and war bonds so it gives insane damage and war bonds only gives like one chest.
i love having e-boomerang on engineer, its basically a free phase 4. just place the turrets in a ramp, hide behind it, and you get a wall of saws, which *shreds* mithrix even without the bleed. discovered this on accident lol
The fact that seed of life has an actual use after consumed is great. I really wish you had some use for, or at least be able to scrap, consumed elixirs or broken watches and stuff like that.
11:12 I think this was definitely a major goal with this DLC, and I believe SotV had the goal to reduce one-shots with Opal, Safer Spaces, and Power Elixir
I'm happy to see someone give Chance Doll the respect it deserves. I swear everytime someones mentions the extremely niche case of "What if the normal drop was a legendary but when it does the better loot pool it makes it something else?" which ignores all the benefits of the item.
yeah, I'm probably one of those people, because yellow items are definitely not better than reds, yellows are green+, that's why you only see it replacing greens from teleporters, if they'd change the order to green -> yellow -> red, people would be much, much happier
Chance Doll just needs to be a bit more clear on what it actually does. When you know how it works, its an amazing item. Especially for people like me who's super into the macro game. Gotta beat that RNG.
@@pham99019/31 reds are decent, the other 12 are niche or straight garbage 5 yellows are decent, the other 5 are basically niche or garbage. I'd say yellows are only slightly worse than legendaries, it's just that the good ones are insanely good and the bad ones are super common (as natural boss drops) and very useless.
@@DankbeastPaul I’m not saying “don’t take because yellow bad”, all in all, it’s still a very good item to get (still 100% better than half of the items in the dlc), I just don’t like the weird order they put the items in simply because it just doesn’t make sense for reds to be turned into green+, it’s still a very good item that you should always take (other than stage 5 going to mithrix, obviously)
I feel like the lantern has a fine design visually. The silhouette is easily distinguishable, which is what matters at a quick glance. It also really doesn't look that much more complex than the topaz broach, delicate watch, etc imo.
personally i dont mind chronic expansions design cause i literally see it as a giant white box with a bunch of stripes on it which. definitley makes it easy to recognize
I got a knurl from a chance shrine once. Granted it was during the elite aspect glitch where you could pick up infinite amounts of an item, so having 4000 chance dolls probably helped
Honestly the art direction for all of these items just felt off this entire dlc. Everything just looks off. Either too detailed because of the shrinking down or just weirdly colors
Too much detail in places that don't really need it. Not enough in places where they look too much like plastic. Chronic Expansion is a good example. It's covered in tiny little details and words that you can barely read when it's blown up on your screen. The rest of it is monochrome and lacks anything resembling a subtle texture.
I can confirm that you can indeed get yellows from chance shrines with the Chance Doll. It happened for me only once so far, but the shrine spat out a Shatterspleen and I had to pause out of shock for a solid minute.
The Chance Doll DOES turn Reds into Yellows. It's just the chance of rolling a Red along with the Chance Doll proc is VERY low, but I remember getting a Spleen out of it on a Commando run and I had to change my pants.
I think it’s worth mentioning the crazy synergy Sonorous Whispers has with two overlooked lunar items: Eulogy Zero and Defiant Gouge. These should be instant pick ups once you get your run going with Sonorous Whispers. Why ? Gouge spawns enemies every time you use a shrine. That means more chances to kill large enemies and elites for more item drops. Eulogy Zero gives you infinite Lunar items with Sonorous Whispers. You’ll get endless Transcendence, Gestures of the Drown, etc. the penalty of losing an occasional red to lunar is minor.
Just got a Shatterspleen yesterday from a shrine with Chance Doll, it's the only one I've seen so far so it's gotta be incredibly rare because it's the chance of Chance Doll procking times the chance of getting a legendary item.
I can confidently say it is possible to get yellow items (via chance doll) from chance shrines. I can vividly remember myself getting a Merf from a shrine while looping with Captain
Worth to note, because chronic expansion is based off of level 1 damage but increases the % of it gained each stack, it makes it a perfectly designed item to be maybe the most unbalanced item fundamentally speaking, if you don't have soulbound fmp, it will do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Getting 0.5 damage per stack is absolutely so extremely insignificant In the grand scheme of things it is actually so depressing, but if you have soulbound and fmp, the damage will *exponentially* and infinitely ramp up....
To elaborate: if you are on stage 3 as commando, usually will end up at level 15~, you would have 45.6 (12 + 2.4 x 14) base damage and a stack of a chronic expansion buff would be 0.72 (12 x 0.06) damage which equates to a 1.57% extra damage boost... Per 5 enemies killed.
simple bolstering lantern buff: make it based on total health and not max health (basically make it proc if you have shaped glass or curse stacks that lower max HP)
I understand why you’d think that, but shaped glass reduces your MAX health by 50%, not your current health. Even if you have half of your health, shaped glass uses the same damage type as Eclipse 8, permanent damage, which reduces your health bar, so if you’re at max health with shaped glass, you’re considered 100% hp
@cameronrodriguez8795 No idea. Maybe ~90 hours with the DLC? Though I often waited to hit the shrines to see if I could get a Chance Doll first, so I think that has a lot to do with it
8:30 two things one: this guy called kilroy was here made a really cool video on how chance doll actually works (it doesn't upgrade your items, it just pulls from a different loot pool with higher rarities and no white items) two: I got a yellow item on my first roll with chance doll lmao
Seed of life is a must have if you play with umbral mithrix, I personally take it over pillar skips on e8. It trivializes phase 4, which is obviously the most dangerous part in a non loop run by a longshot
I've been testing long standing solitude for a little bit, trying out different stack amounts and comboing it with brittle crown So far I think the best combo is 1 solitude + a fuck ton of crowns, as much as you can get I tried stacking 4 solitudes once and it seemed to reaallly slow down your level up rate, in exchange for getting 4 tokens per level up, which is fair I guess With 1 solitude and like 3-4 crowns you mostly get enough tokens to buy most things on stages, if you leave behind drones and chance shrines. Stacking crowns means you will reach level cap way faster, which from my experience isn't that big of a deal. I had 2 brittle crowns and got 2 more on stage 4 and was on level 66 on mithrix without looping Theoretically the best combo would be 2-3 solitudes and way more crowns, since this means you still get a bunch of tokens and level ups without reaching level cap in a loop. I don't want to test this because I've done way too many runs with this damn item and I want to actually beat false son instead of experimenting on this shit (I got the dlc 2 days ago) Honestly I wouldn't put this item any higher than C tier. On its own its insanely tedious and unfun to use and doesn't provide much return. You need at least one or two brittle crowns to make it actually feel nice, but it still sucks when you can't get something because you ran out of tokens. I also feel like the investment needed just isn't worth the payoff of having tons of hp and damage and stuff. You basically need to visit bazaar every stage to stack more and the payoff isn't very visible, not as much as other normal items. The payoff is very real, allowing you to survive against mithrix with relatively bad items and still be able to kill him in a reasonable amount of time, I just think needing to go to bazaar multiple times + dealing with the tedious token system + it basically locking you into not looping makes it not very fun to use. (Btw all my tests were on seeker with the alt secondary which probably makes it easier to gain gold with crown since it hits so often)
for boomerang you really should have said the 30% damage part in the description is wrong. It actually deals 30% OF A SAWMERANG, which means 120% + 42% per additional hit, and ofcause does the same on the way back. That said it isn't total damage, but instead base damage. But still a huge difference. Shortly after the launch of the DLC i heard a lot of people say it is garbage especially due to the super low damage. But it actually deals like 8 times what people thought it did, and as you say is awesome for proccing. It is by far my favorite item from the DLC because it is just a decent red about the middle of the pool, that has high proc, a nice stun and AoE, and the sawmerang interaction is really cool.
The chance doll yellow item thing can definitely happen, one time i had it and got a planula. i mean, it could've ben an ICBM or a cherf but... still cool :D
8:43 I actually did get a yellow from a shrine due to chance doll, that being said I had multiple chance dolls and a clover so the chance was much higher but I can confirm it does happen
I have indeed gotten a yellow from a chance shrine with the chance doll. I thought the reason this happened was because it upgrades the rarity, so if you pulled a red from a chance shrine it upgrades to a yellow, which in most cases isn’t great…
from cod to apex Minecraft i have played a lot of games and to the point that the only game i play as of now is only risk and grinding it. and its all thanks to you. so thanks ( i miss you in the races too)
MY FRIEND AND I GOT A YELLOW ITEM VIA CHANCE SHRINE! It was a shatterspleen as well and we thought it was a bug, but he had like 5 Chance dolls (we love gambling and we went to the Bulwark Ambry for command to grab a couple more)
I have actually managed to see the Yellow item from a chance shrine with the Chance Doll a SINGLE time. Whether turning a red item into a Defense Nucleus was an upgrade though is up to you
dude was watching your videos all day today and bought the dlc cause of you. your videos are amazing they are no bullshit and just all fucking gas. you have such a great way of speaking, great editing, and overall great vibe thank you bro. wish you were able to post more u rule.
i had a run where i completely broke chronic expasion, i had soulbound catalyst, gesture of the drown and forgive me please, pretty rare combination, but i assur you, i had infinte damage
I wish sonorous whispers was a more "fun" item, its definitely the best item in the game. Pumping a bunch more items into a run just doesn't spice up the run the same way that a behemoth or clover does.
It could be fun I think if it worked like Hit List (aka a 'bounty hunt' of sorts), where instead of a % chance of elites to drop items, it picked a random elite every 10 seconds and highlighted it. If you seek it down and kill it within the time limit, you get the item. Would at least give it some interactivity. Alternate idea: The item "breaks" upon entering each stage, and you have to find its 3 pieces marked around each map. Assembling it makes it work as usual, you just have to build it first each stage. Would give it some interactivity and an indirect nerf, by making it not work immediately and costing you time each stage.
Yeah, it falls into the category of "good and boring", which seems to be the way with most of the good items in the DLC. Seed of life is good but boring (it's just a Dio's in your equipment slot), chance shrine doll is good but boring, and even sale star is kind of boring (better than the others but it's still pretty passive)
RND on his tier list video showed him getting 2 chirfs from the same shrine. I've only gotten 1 boss item from a change doll in the 100 something hours I've played since the DLC
I have gotten a yellow item from a chance shrine after having something like 10+ dolls. This yellow item if I remember correctly was followed up by a red item.
On my run to get the false son mastery skin I got a Knurl from chance doll. I had gotten like really lucky that run and came out of it with three knurls.
The majority of the items in the DLC are either "this item does not have a good effect and may even be detrimental to your run" or "this item wins you the game".
You know it's bad when some of the lesser known item mods out there create new and more intricate experiences than official DLC. Although this is gearbox DLC and not Hopoo games DLC, so I'm not that too surprised. Not to say there weren't some iffy items in Survivors of the void (looking at you needle tic).
I wasn't the only one who thought Bolstering Lantern just... didn't look like a vanilla item. At least not a white one. Even red items tend to look simple (Rejuv Rack, Resonance Disc, War Bonds, Clover, Behemoth... all just simple shapes with 1 or 2 colors). It's RoR2 (and really the whole series)' art style. BL looks like it's from a mod that, while definitely had love and effort put into it, didn't quite nail the aesthetic of RoR2. It almost looks like something from the BubbetsItems mod, which has cool item concepts and some that look like they could be from the vanilla game (I'm really a fan of the design of Jellied Soles and pretty much all the new Void items), but many of them have this weird "vibe" to them that clashes with RoR2. Like, if you joined someone using the mod and never played RoR2 before, you'd probably notice some of BubbetsItems didn't really "fit."
Funny thing, I have actually gotten a cherf and a little disciple since dlc dropped from the chance doll. Sale star and chance doll just make runs have so much more good loot. I don't think I've lost a sale star run yet in eclipse
Question about lantern: How does it interact with Shaped Glass? Because it would be *really funny* if having Bolstering Lantern and Shaped Glass on at the same time just gave you always-on lantern buff on top of doubled damage.
8:43 after all this time of playing the dlc, i have gotten a red upgraded to a yellow from a shrine ONCE...and of course it was a defense nucleus, my friend made fun of me for how extremely unlucky i was

@@pham99019/31 reds are decent, the other 12 are niche or straight garbage
5 yellows are decent, the other 5 are basically niche or garbage. I'd say yellows are only slightly worse than legendaries, it's just that the good ones are insanely good and the bad ones are super common (as natural boss drops) and very useless.
@@pham990 it literally has a 1 (ONE) % chance of dropping a yellow on proc vs a 20% chance of dropping a red. I think I'd take that gamble
@@DankbeastPaul I’m not saying “don’t take because yellow bad”, all in all, it’s still a very good item to get (still 100% better than half of the items in the dlc), I just don’t like the weird order they put the items in simply because it just doesn’t make sense for reds to be turned into green+,
it’s still a very good item that you should always take (other than stage 5 going to mithrix, obviously)
Warped echo looks like it belongs to an entirely different game
@@Leeder87 It looks like a Diablo item 😂
8:30 yep, happened by me, 1 yellow item in like 50 hours, but still, that works
1:50 thank you for putting my feeling abt it looking off into words
simple bolstering lantern buff: make it based on total health and not max health (basically make it proc if you have shaped glass or curse stacks that lower max HP)
Chance doll doesn't "upgrade" a drop, it just changes the pool that the item is drawn from
I actually HAVE gotten a yellow from a chance shrine with the chance doll. I have a pic of you want me to share somewhere
Wouldn't shaped glass proc bolstering lantern because it makes your health go down to 50%
I understand why you’d think that, but shaped glass reduces your MAX health by 50%, not your current health. Even if you have half of your health, shaped glass uses the same damage type as Eclipse 8, permanent damage, which reduces your health bar, so if you’re at max health with shaped glass, you’re considered 100% hp
@@samnejberger5546 Even more anti-synergy between existing items and new items, yay...
1:20 What about delicate watch though? It also has a pretty intricate design
That item was made by Hopoo Games so ror2tubers will never criticize it
That was a nitpick
Watch is a good item so no one cares
No one would care if lantern was also well designed
I've gotten a yellow from a shrine at least twice. Didn't know the odds were that low, though
That's insane how many hours do u have
@cameronrodriguez8795 No idea. Maybe ~90 hours with the DLC? Though I often waited to hit the shrines to see if I could get a Chance Doll first, so I think that has a lot to do with it
Crazy luck.
8:30 two things
one: this guy called kilroy was here made a really cool video on how chance doll actually works (it doesn't upgrade your items, it just pulls from a different loot pool with higher rarities and no white items)
two: I got a yellow item on my first roll with chance doll lmao
Seed of life is a must have if you play with umbral mithrix, I personally take it over pillar skips on e8. It trivializes phase 4, which is obviously the most dangerous part in a non loop run by a longshot
Bolstering Lantern could be buffed by making it count reduced health (from shaped glass, tonic affliction etc) so you can get permanent uptime
I forgot which one I got but I remember getting a perf from a chance shrine. I love the doll
I've gotten a yellow from a chance shrine with chance doll! Unfortunately it was a planula, but it was still a good surprise
Your intros are really popping off lately, these past few months has been crazy for grandpa content
I've been testing long standing solitude for a little bit, trying out different stack amounts and comboing it with brittle crown
So far I think the best combo is 1 solitude + a fuck ton of crowns, as much as you can get
I tried stacking 4 solitudes once and it seemed to reaallly slow down your level up rate, in exchange for getting 4 tokens per level up, which is fair I guess
With 1 solitude and like 3-4 crowns you mostly get enough tokens to buy most things on stages, if you leave behind drones and chance shrines.
Stacking crowns means you will reach level cap way faster, which from my experience isn't that big of a deal. I had 2 brittle crowns and got 2 more on stage 4 and was on level 66 on mithrix without looping
Theoretically the best combo would be 2-3 solitudes and way more crowns, since this means you still get a bunch of tokens and level ups without reaching level cap in a loop. I don't want to test this because I've done way too many runs with this damn item and I want to actually beat false son instead of experimenting on this shit (I got the dlc 2 days ago)
Honestly I wouldn't put this item any higher than C tier.
I can confirm from one of my runs that I have gotten a yellow item from a shrine when having the idol in my inventory, but it has only happened once
I got a yellow from chance shrine once while playing with a friend. Was very early in the DLC
ive gotten a spleen from a chance shrine b4. it does indeed work
8:43 I actually did get a yellow from a shrine due to chance doll, that being said I had multiple chance dolls and a clover so the chance was much higher but I can confirm it does happen
It also was genesis loop 🥲
Worth noting that Electric Boomerang only has a 1.0 proc coefficient on the first hit then 0.2 on every hit afterwards
I have indeed gotten a yellow from a chance shrine with the chance doll. I thought the reason this happened was because it upgrades the rarity, so if you pulled a red from a chance shrine it upgrades to a yellow, which in most cases isn’t great…
This video made me feel even more greatful to the modders that reworked all of the bad items into really clever and fun to use ones.
I actually never considered your point on item quality equating to visual complexity, but goddamn I have to agree with you.
from cod to apex Minecraft i have played a lot of games and to the point that the only game i play as of now is only risk and grinding it. and its all thanks to you. so thanks ( i miss you in the races too)
MY FRIEND AND I GOT A YELLOW ITEM VIA CHANCE SHRINE! It was a shatterspleen as well and we thought it was a bug, but he had like 5 Chance dolls (we love gambling and we went to the Bulwark Ambry for command to grab a couple more)
i got a charged perf from it once
8:49 Can confirm, only happened to me once, I got a genesis loop from it and was so confused
I have actually managed to see the Yellow item from a chance shrine with the Chance Doll a SINGLE time.
Whether turning a red item into a Defense Nucleus was an upgrade though is up to you
every time seed of life teleportation is mentioned anywhere a star lights up in my sky
8:30 it absolutely can do red->yellow. It's just extremely rare
I have gotten the yellow from the chance shrine, but only once ever. Its super duper rare.
dude was watching your videos all day today and bought the dlc cause of you. your videos are amazing they are no bullshit and just all fucking gas. you have such a great way of speaking, great editing, and overall great vibe thank you bro. wish you were able to post more u rule.
Bolstering lantern would have been great if it worked with shields. For a 20% bonus, it doesn't seem like it'd even be that broken a combo.
I like to view Sonorous Whispers as an item that just enables the boss item mechanics from Risk of Rain 1/Returns + 2 56 Leaf Clovers
The doll does give yellows at shrines! I got empathy cores from a shrine with it and stared at it in disbelief until an elder almost ruined my run
Delicate watch also has a way more complex icon design for a white item
I have gotten a yellow before, i was completly baffled, and now I know it was the chance doll lol
Oh yes, I remember getting empathy cores from the chance shrine and thinking that it was strange. Definitely real, just really rare I assume.
Woolie got a yellow on his first run with a chance doll i think. I figured it just upgrades to yellow if its a red item?
i had a run where i completely broke chronic expasion, i had soulbound catalyst, gesture of the drown and forgive me please, pretty rare combination, but i assur you, i had infinte damage
3:49 featureman :(
The 0.2% chance to get a yellow with chance doll got me a charged perforator once, it's very real
Have gotten a few yellows from shrines, presumably from doll
I wish sonorous whispers was a more "fun" item, its definitely the best item in the game. Pumping a bunch more items into a run just doesn't spice up the run the same way that a behemoth or clover does.
yeah it's like fun every once in a while, sorta like playing with command or something
I do recall getting yellows off of chance shrines.
Fun fact: on xbox, Sonorous Whispers still has a 15% chance instead of a 4%, because gearbox can't be bothered to patch console, apparently.
I got a yellow from a chance shrine! It was the first time I'd ever used the item and I thought it was bugged or something.
I have gotten a molten perforator from a chance shrine - it’s not bugged, just an abysmally low chance
I've gotten a yellow from a shrine. Blew my mind when it happened
Although it's heartbreaking to learn that I would have had a red instead
RND on his tier list video showed him getting 2 chirfs from the same shrine. I've only gotten 1 boss item from a change doll in the 100 something hours I've played since the DLC
I have gotten a yellow item from a chance shrine after having something like 10+ dolls. This yellow item if I remember correctly was followed up by a red item.
On my run to get the false son mastery skin I got a Knurl from chance doll. I had gotten like really lucky that run and came out of it with three knurls.
I actually managed to pull a yellow from a shrine of chance once. I don't know if you got extremely unlucky, but it's definitely possible
The majority of the items in the DLC are either "this item does not have a good effect and may even be detrimental to your run" or "this item wins you the game".
You can get a yellow from a chance shrine, I was so surprised when i got one
I did actually get a Charged Perforator from chance shrine with chance doll, had to triple check to fathom what just happened.
The bolstering lantern should interact with shaped glass
You know it's bad when some of the lesser known item mods out there create new and more intricate experiences than official DLC. Although this is gearbox DLC and not Hopoo games DLC, so I'm not that too surprised. Not to say there weren't some iffy items in Survivors of the void (looking at you needle tic).
Chance doll and Sale star my beloved
I got a churf from a chance shrine. Best moment of my life
Question about lantern: How does it interact with Shaped Glass? Because it would be *really funny* if having Bolstering Lantern and Shaped Glass on at the same time just gave you always-on lantern buff on top of doubled damage.
Ive gotten a yellow once from a shrine albeit I had 5 chance dolls and 2 clovers and the run was well over 2 hours.
I’ve gotten a yellow from a shrine with chance doll. Can confirm
ive gotten 3 yellows from chance shrines w/ chance doll.. just really rare
I think bolstering lantern looks great and is the best part of it
The yellow from a chance shrine happened on a raydans stream the other day
Kinda shocked that prayer beads isn’t mentioned since you can get infinite stats from a prayer bead printer. Unless it’s been patched out
Sonorous whispers should only work if the timer is moving
Wanted to confirm i have gotten a yellow from a chance shrine with chance doll. Did not know it was super rare.
8:43 after all this time of playing the dlc, i have gotten a red upgraded to a yellow from a shrine ONCE...and of course it was a defense nucleus, my friend made fun of me for how extremely unlucky i was
Can confirm. Got a shatterspleen from a shrine because of it
