Thank you so much. This helped my fix my AC in the Lancia Branded version (2013). I was quoted $1800 for the replacement from the brand workshop and my nearest guys didn't want to do the job. I followed this video and now I have a working AC again. Wouldn't be able to fix this without this video. The cost for doing most of the work self landed $256 for the part and $110 for refilling ac.

Mikael, looking to do the same thing. Did you evacuate the system before repairing or is the AC system already empty because there was a leak?

Thanks for sharing this video. i got a 2016 Town & country Limited .I know salt and crap get up in there. i wouldn't of took off the anti freeze hose of either. After the guy i work for he gave his business to his son. But I was his mechanic for at least twenty years. So I opened up my own shop and got to take most of the customers with me because they new me better because I was there mechanic for years. I ran my mechanical business for over twenty five years. But I'm retired now but I still fix my own vehicles and some family and friends. But my sister had the same problem you just fixed on her Dodge van. My brother and his friend did that job.
Watching your video will save me lots of time when my Van ever needs it done. Thanks for your time of your Videos.

Im always so happy when I watch Eric O.'s videos and he takes such great care when disassembling a customers car. He treats their vehicle so well, taking things apart and putting them back together as they would want a mechanic too. He must have taken off that sliding side door trim 3 times just to get it right. In an age where people dont care about anything but the bottom dollar or how to fix something as fast as they can, you indeed are the pinnacle that mechanics everywhere should follow. Thanks for your dedication. It matters to me

This is the first time tuning into your channel but I’ve watched about four videos in a row. I like how you go from beginning to end showing exactly how much time you can expect to make these repairs. I haven’t been a mechanic for over 20 years and I like to do things myself and these videos make it very easy. Great job!

14:27 If you remove the screws and the strap from the heater core end, the core will slide out of the box and sit there with the hoses attatched. you can then put the box on the bench instead of your lap. Keep up the good work!!!!!

I know this video is 2 years old, but it saved me about $1000.00 dollars. Awesome and straight to the point video. Nice job simplifying how to remove and install the parts. I
Had this done in about 4 hours. That includes the vacuum down and recharge. Thanks for the video. Keep up the nice work.

The rotational forces of the squirrel cage blower, is truly tremendous at speed upon plastics. Their not known to be exactly perfectly balanced. Plus in time due to constant temperature adjustments, from hot to cold, cold to hot, it tends to alter the molecular structure of the plastic casing itself. That is why it is re-enforced in every way the designers could think of, seeing as there is no steel in its design.

I have done so many of these....I have never seen a lineset come off that easy
I have fought the stud before big time
I had to drill a hole next to it to get it to break free...why is it auxiliary a/c is always a problem? Evaps and lines! I did an older grand Cherokee and didn't get the door shaft lined up with the hole! Had it charged and ready to ship before I noticed!

Well. I searched for some info on a Caravan leaking refrigerant and a week or so late this popped up on TH-cam's recommended list. Trust Mr. Google to make connections. ANyway: I checked for leaks (the two cans that leaked out in a week had leak detector goo) and found a pile of bright yellow under the rear connector. This vid showed me EXACTLY what to do, and I did. The part is $$$ but I dodged the labor, probably same if not more. The book hours for this job are nuts they include full coolant drain and refill. Took me a day but saved hundreds. Thanks!

My dad is a car guy. He watches Motortrend religiously and has a lift in his workshop. His health in retirement limits him but he still tinkers. I had some issues with my ‘07 Pacifica and I showed him some of your videos. I accidentally cast one to his TV and he told me to leave it on. Lol. That’s a huge compliment from a guy who likes to watch repair and rebuild on motortrend for fun. Personally, I appreciate the detail about certain things to watch out for and problems when taking things apart or putting back together to avoid making a bigger problem. I like tinkering to fix my own issues and save a buck, but am a total novice so if there’s not enough detail I could make a serious mistake. Thanks again.

Another great one Eric. This is defiantly the smartest way to do these. The heater cores in these are junk and the necks twist or break 90% of the time when you attempt to unhook them so if you can avoid it do. We found that they leak at the weld just above the plate. Dodge/Chrysler has a lot of added unneeded steps in their recommend repairs to add flag time. Gotta love um.

Good video, got my 2010 apart in no time but they only sell the evaporator and expansion valves separately here and I discovered that the fasteners are seized into the clamp , off to the parts store to hopefully get these parts , If I could have purchased the core and expansion valve together the job would have been done
Thanks Eric this video helped a lot
Oh I discovered that if you loosen the screws around the heater core and remove the safety strap you can slip the heater core out and presto the HVAC box is free of strings
    Thanks again

  • @stevewrona9835
    @stevewrona9835 ปีที่แล้ว

Awesome video very helpful in getting this job done. I found my parts from NAPA and they came with gaskets. I had to get the expansion valve and evaporator separate and I recommend getting the AC valve plate also, I don’t think I would have been able to get my old one apart. Evaporator core seemed to fit petty good to me. Total with refrigerant and parts I was at $225. Local Chrysler dealer wanted $550 just for the evaporator.
I did have a corrosion problem between the expansion valve stud and line plate and had to work at it a few nights to finally get them separated. I took off the rear tire to give myself some more room and just spraying it with wd40 corrosion inhibitor, letting it sit and digging out as much corrosion as I could with a pick and screwdriver. I was able to get a mini pry bar between them and finally popped them loose.
Also I saw in the comments someone else recommended sliding the heater core out of the box assembly without disconnecting the lines. That worked out good and than I was able to take it apart on my workbench.

Love this video! Really informative and mechanic has great sense of humor...I'm a diesel mechanic myself so I don't really have to deal much in the automotive world...but I DO have a Dodge Caravan..so far A/C is still working...but have owned a few Caravans...my current one is an 06 and the first I've had with a rear system..so knowledge is power and might as well know what I'm doing when the inevitable occurs..agreed Dodge has some strange engineering..LOL!! Thanks for the info and entertainment!!

In defense of the Chrysler minivan, there's one in my work fleet that's a pleasure to drive and never needs any major work. Of course, counter it to other cars we've had since I started in 1999...a Gen 1 Taurus, second gen Escort and Hyundai Accents...so I'm waiting on them to buy a Le Car and a Vega just to make the circle of crap complete.

Thanks for the vid! I have Exactly that problem, tried a recharge and saw oil dripping from the back, I have a 2010 Grand Caravan and this will help me save labor costs by stripping the interior myself, even if i have to get the core replaced by a pro.

Thank you for making this video. I have a dead mouse in the rear HVAC and it is not a pleasant fragrance. I may just let him dehydrate. I am afraid that the plastic panels will shatter our unheated garage in NW Illinois.
Be that as it may, I enjoyed your video. It was very well done, with good video and excellent narration.

Thanks for the vid. Our expansion valve was very dented but the hole was actually right where the pipes go into the evaporator. My guess is that the banging and jiggling of the whole setup just put pressure on the little joints and it eventually just cracked a small hole

Thanks for the great video, I just replaced the evaporator in my 2011 T&C but now found the one actuator does not move when adjusting the temp. Is there a way to calibrate the actuator or see if I simply have a bad one that needs to be replaced? When I reinstalled them one fit right back where it was before, the other seemed like it was rotated too far. I'm not a 100% while writing this which was was not moving.

I wonder if it would be worth adding some kind of debri shield behind the tire to stop stones and what not from impacting the expansion valve? I drive a lot of dirt roads and mine failed last year on a 2011 grand caravan. I am just now getting around to fix it.

Question: I have a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan and the rear ac keeps going in and out. If I knock AKA bang on the rear panel right in front of this I can sometimes get it to work. Do you think I need to replace the evaporator or is it a motor issue on the rear A/C?

  • @markmtack
    @markmtack 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Awesome video! I was working through my 2016 Grand Caravan A/C problems, Checking the mechanical functions of modules/actuators under dash then looking for the rear ones which this video shows their locations. Unbelievable, it appears the whole casing has to be removed if you have a bad rear module and/or actuator? Disconnecting the evaporator coil & unit from the "O" rings & lines releasing refrigerate etc!? Just to replace a bad actuator or module!? Or do you have a solution w/o junking the dodge caravan?

Absolutely dangerous on how you removed the rear seat Eric O. You should of wore more safety gear such as a hi-viz vest, flame resistant gloves, steel toed boots, respirator, chemical resistant apron, and ear muffs. Man, I don't know how you go through working on cars like that each day. OSHA gonna have hissy fit.

Great Video. Only issue I had was removing the refrigerant lines separate from the expansion valve. That did not work. So I remove those lines via the connections behind the wheel and then took out the entire blower box. Once I did that, I able to carefully pry away the lines from the expansion valve, clean the lines and then reassemble with the new part and o-rings.
I do have a question though, the reason I changed the rear evaporator/expansion valve was due to no cold air. I replaced it and still no cold air is coming from the rear. It is only ambient temperature. The front is fine and is nice and cold.
    Pertinent information:
*2007 Dodge Grand Caravan with auto temp controls
*The rear lines are not pinched or broken. No leaks.
*I can adjust to get heat from the heater core, but no cold air.
    Just ambient.
*The system was evacuated and this created a vacuum. Upon removing the lines to the evaporator, air entered the system as expected.
*I check the controls and motors for temperature and those are working just fine; both in auto and manual modes.
    *Speed control is also OK.
*Replaced the entire unit (evaporator and expansion valve) with an OEM Mopar part.
*I had the system vacuumed and recharged.
*Initially, the air both front and rear appeared to be cold, same temp. I thought, great. Problem solved
    * After driving around town, the lines going to the rear evaporator are not cold, so I am back to where I started.
    What am I missing?
