good explanation , and i can appreciate the little mishaps that happen, dropped screws, bad reach to stuff stubborn hoses. I got a good bearing on this now.
Good video overall, very helpful, but FYI -- ALL o-rings are round. The "conical shape" or flattening of the old used rings you refer to is because the old o-rings are compressed to seal -- that's how they work. They're old, no longer pliable and are holding that shape. This is normal and why all o-rings should be replaced no matter where you find them when working on anything. It's crazy to re-use old o-rings. Never, ever do that. Glad you didn't. Also, it's the perfect time to get all that old rust coating off the metal pipes, using a little emory cloth and clean water. Put everything back together clean, not dirty. This is your only chance to do it. And, finally, it's the best time to lubricate that clip holding the brake pedal on especially where you see metal on metal. You're right there, 5 seconds to lubricate with a spot of grease goes a long way. Been there, done that. Anyway, thanks for the video, well done.
Hey, thanks for this, just got done with replacing the heater core on my Grand Caravan. Job went well, your video was a big help, saved 8 or 9 hundred bucks on labor. The only trouble I had was getting the pipe clamps back on.
I need to replace my heater core in a 05 Dodge Grand Caravan, do you think it's the same setup? I have replaced a few things on the van such as the valve cover gasket in the front and the thermostat, I have flush the system but I'm still not getting good heat. I think that the heater core might be leaking/clogged. I think someone put stop leak in it.
Nicely done video, especially considering that you had to hold the camera and disassemble the parts at the same time. One way of preventing the annoyance of having to remove that trim panel to retrieve wayward screws is to shape a piece of thin cardboard and tape it in place so loose hardware is directed onto the carpet instead of behind the panel. Seems like every time I don’t bother to do that...I lose the hardware.
You made this video excellent to look at the procedure is easy to understand ,your a excellent teacher, thank you so much for saving me a lot of money,GOD bless you my frein😂😮😊❤
ATTENTION, FORD ENGINEERS! This is how you design the heater box so that the location of the heater core is easy to get to for removal. Note, this should never be an 8-hour job!
Sweet! you did a really good job with this video. I would not hesitate to do mine now. I have no issues, but with owning a 02 and a 04 that both have high mileage, it’s only a matter of time before I have to change one or both. Again, good job on the video and the van.
Thank you for the video! I have the 2006 model. They quoted me 8hrs labor for the heater core. Now I am reassured it won't be as major of a repair. It seems like some cars have them well hidden beneath the dash. The TNC does a good job of making things accessible.
WOW!! didn;t know it was that easy, wish i would have done this during the summer time, lol thank you so much ! good work!! i going to get started on my 2006 T&C.
I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CARS BUT THE WAY YOU EXPLAIN IT MAKE ME WANT TO GIVE IT A TRY!!!! BUT I RATHER PAY YOU TO FIX MY HEATER CORE FOR ME KNOWING ME I'LL MAKE SOME KINDA OF MISTAKE DO YOU HAVE A PLACE THAT'S NOT SO EXPENSIVE TO RECOMMEND!!! EVERYTIME I TURE MY HEAT ON ANTIFREEZE COME THROUGH THE VENTS AND MAKE MY WINDSHIELD GREEN WITH ANTIFREEZE!!! YOU'RE A AWESOME MECHANIC GOD BLESS YOU 💯💞👍
I would rate this a 2 on an easy scale from 1-10. It really is about as simple as it looks. If you would rather have someone else tackle this , I would start by calling every shop nearby and getting quotes. I stress this because the difference from one shop to the next can be significant. Another option would be finding a handy mechanic by word of mouth. I would want to make sure they came with great reviews. But having said that there are a lot of capable mechanics that could do this that may not necessarily work at a shop. One more thing I would add is that this job should not charge more than an hour shop time. I have changed heater cores that would take 8 hrs or more and require extensive dash removal etc. This is not one of those and should not be charged as such. Hope this can be of some help for you , and I appreciate your terrific feedback. Thank you and God bless.
If it is not the core , or tubes entering the core , then it would be at the fire wall. The tubes connecting to hoses from the heater core. The water pump outlet behind the timing cover is notorious also for leaks. I would focus there. If nothing is found it may be water backing up from a plugged drain from the ac condensor. Hope this helps give you a start. Thanks for the feedback.
Good Video, clear and concise, Have you made any videos where you removed a chrysler T&C AC Evaporator from the dash, I'm curious if there's an easeir way then removing the entire dash
Very well made video.. Thanks... I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. Just wondering if by chance if it uses the same heater core? Any advice on a good safe place to order one would also be appreciated.
I believe it does , but I would inspect it just to make certain. If it looks similar it will work , the older style look way different. Here is a link to a brand I prefer. Thanks for the feedback. amzn.to/46sjP8t
I have not had any issues with aftermarket brands but I most often will use spectra premium. Another thing to note is that these vans usually have a front and rear , so it's possible they gave you the incorrect one. Another possibility is the O rings are sized wrong, sometimes requires dialectric grease etc. to pop them in , but sometimes still will not fit. If your old O rings were okay you may swap them. Otherwise I would get a different one because it should fit fairly easy. Here is a link to the spectra brand. Thanks for the feedback. amzn.to/3hGTJaY
The clamps connecting the heater core tubes to the tubes through the car's firewall in my car don't appear to have hex-head or Phillips-head fasteners to close the joints -- the clamps seem to be crimp type instead. Has anyone else here removed this type of clamps? If so, what's the best method to use, to avoid damaging the car tubes?
On this particular vehicle the previous owner had put stop leak all in the system. I made a video on replacing the radiator which really shows a lot of blockage. All the hoses and everything were replaced as a result. The heater core also had large amounts of stop leak imbedded , if any had remained in the system it would have clogged other areas not to mention producing very little heat if any. As a rule of thumb stop leak should only be added to the cooling system if driving it directly to the scrap yard. Now most of the time these heater cores will get replaced due to leaking or not heating well due to years of debris lodging inside the small passages. I appreciate your feedback and thank you for watching.
I purchased a 10 caravan and realised stop leak was used. Started to notice a lot of coolant disappearing after a drive. Do you think it would be a good idea to just bypass the heater core. Since I know stop leak is already in the core Etc
Got my old 2004 dodge grand caravan leaking on driver side floor and pouring drops of it outside on both driver and passenger sides of doors. Probably heater core needs replacement.
I have never thought about the right hand drive. I am sure it is all the same procedure, but curious if the heater core side is reversed . I know this is one of the easiest heater core removals. Thank you very much for watching. I always find it facinating how people from all over the world seem to watch these videos. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video! I have two questions. I have a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country Limited 3.8 L. Is it basically the same repair to replace the heater core in that vehicle as well? Second question how long did this repair actually take you?
Yes , it should be exactly the same. As far as time I would say around an hour or two. I would take my time , and double check everything afterwards. Hope all goes smoothly , and thanks for the question.
Would this also work with a 2001 Chrysler town and country 3.3? I believe my heater core is starting to go out. The heat in the can goes in and out., warm for a bit then goes cold and so on.
It should be the same with the exception of how the tubes themselves fasten. There is a retaining plate with a screw instead of the locking collars. Thank you for watching.
@@s33therfan I was looking up the heater core on parts geek and said there is a front and rear heater core and went to looking online but couldn’t find anything. I’ll look up in the rebuild book but do you know anything about this?
If yours has the rear controls it will also have a rear heater core. The front is the most important , and also the most likely to fail. Also the front can still produce enough to keep the rest of the cabin warm . I had a similar issue with a different vehicle where only the front would produce heat. Hope this helps. Thanks
@@s33therfan thank you for replying, so where is the rear heater core? I do have rear controls. Their over head for the rear passenger. Also my can was converted to a wheel chair van, floor was lowered and a ramp installed on the right side. The only thing visible under the van is the exhaust line. They out some kind of metal sheeting under the whole length except where the motor is.
I believe the lines are located in the floor pan , under all the carpet etc if they have not been removed. The heater core should be located on the right side panel , where you open the rear hatch. Unfortunately it would be hard to tell if it was disabled without removing that panel and checking/feeling if it is producing heat. Hope this helps.
Very empowering! How can I earn my family about a thousand dollars this weekend? That would be to save it by doing this myself. It does not even look difficult. You just have to be patient and gentle -- kinda like parenting teenagers. I gotta get better with that. We don't want to break or lose stuff. I wonder if I could get one of them to help. You do a great job in explaining each step and showing how the different parts function as you take them off!
Terrific feedback , thank you for watching.
Is that the same on a 2006 Town and Country 3.3? Whereas you don't have to remove the whole dashboard you can just go in from the bottom?
good explanation , and i can appreciate the little mishaps that happen, dropped screws, bad reach to stuff stubborn hoses. I got a good bearing on this now.
