This is a Recall Problem solving episode! In this video you will find a longer theory of recall, more importantly how to troubleshoot for those of you still struggling. This young dog Gracie and her owner are struggling to get a consistent recall due to the way the command was originally set up. This dog is just killing me😅 you're talking, talking, talking and the dog is having a blast playing with the lead, happy dog entertaining herself, really getting into shaking the lead. You just left her there! You're brill with all you do but people like to watch the dog practice.
I think the point of this video is to explain to those who are squeamish about the E-Collar the reason why they should use one, and how to use one. This was a training for the owner, not the dog. I think he has a video for training with an E-Collar
Tom isn’t training the dog! He’s training the person! It doesn’t matter if Tom can make the dog recall, it matters that the owner can do it. No different teaching a musical instrument..I could play the concerto a hundred times for a student, but that doesn’t help them figure out how to solve their own problems…
Some of these comments are rude. He has probably dealt with countless people who are afraid of using the e-collar and has to explain things this way to prevent them from shutting down. He has probably given this lecture a thousand times, this is just one time we got to see it. I think this video has probably helped a bunch of people who would have closed the video at the start if he hadn't approached the e-collar topic so gingerly.
I could not agree more. Thanks for the explanation. I started using e-collars on my dogs for training about 10 years ago. With much reluctance. I could not bring myself to start until I made contact with a fantastic personal trainer to show me how to use it properly. There's so much more useful information available now than when I started! I live in a semi-rural environment. I love to walk my dogs off-leash. It is imperative that I have reliable recall. I've never found anything more effective than e-collar training, especially for re-call. Thanks for posting.

I love binge watching Upstate Canine Academy the day before I train. I'm currently a dog trainer, but I LOVE learning new methods and hearing new theories! You've been such a huge help in the helping of many pet parents that have walked into my life :)
Shows you are a true trainer and not like so many ice worked beside through many years. Some prefer to pretend they are the only way and know it all and I'm the kind that feels we learn everyday ourselves and not one way to train fits every dog or every family. I've used some crazy ideas through the years to train and I go with what works for the individual dog. Just as we humans don't learn or retain the same, dogs are far more complicated. Wish you well at training our fellow humans and just giving the dogs that balance and confidence in their human.
I know I am late but I have a question, I have a 6 year old dog that I got when I was little, and nobody trained him. I am trying to train him now, and when I tell him to sit on the couch or the bed, he sits. But when I do so on the floor, he does nothing. How can I fix that?
@@dagodlypug2399 use a leash and use some pressure, Thomas talks a lot about it in his videos. Also remember that new enviroment can be way harder for dog so take everything step by step. Don't feel bad, we all had made mistakes, i got my dog when i was also little but she is 10 now and we are training and creating stronger bond everyday. good luck!

@@dagodlypug2399 does your dog have any joint problems? Sometimes when a dog will sit on a cushy, soft surface but will avoid doing so on a hard surface on command it is because they have arthritis or bad knees or a bad back and the act of sitting is uncomfortable

Not really, the dog should never play with it`s leash.
Thank you for point out that the correction is as important as the reinforcement. Discipline is not bad when is correctly applied it and will also increase the bond with your dog if you are fair with him when correcting. Just use all the tools available as he does, with brain. If you don't know how to use them just listen to him.
Tom, Great video!!! I am a trainer in Florida and I really appreciate the way you explained to your client about the e-collar. It is such a great tool to use, people just need to be educated properly on how to use it and they will never go back to struggling with their dogs. Owners happy and dogs are much happier!!!! My GS/ Mal Mix has recalled since she was 4-5 months and it got better through the days, weeks, months and years. She is 6 y.o.now. Come ? Piece of cake. How ? She comes bc it's a reward when she comes, treat or a lot of love of hands on praise. everytime. No Discipline on the come. Discipline makes the dog go the other way. Reward makes the dog come to you. Worked for me everytime with all my dogs. I worked little by little on distractions.
Everyone has their way of training. This is my experience.
Positive reinforcement is a theory that has led to a lot of failure even on humans. The American education system has turned to positive reinforcement for many years now and look at the academic performance of an average American kid compared to those of other countries. Love has different forms. Spoiling your kid or dog by only giving positive reinforcement is not love. Not every dog owner adopts their dogs when they are puppies. If you adopt a mature untrained dog that has learned to misbehave with a lot of success, you think your love and reward will work? It is like dealing with a repeated criminal who has been escaping punishment throughout his entire life. You think giving him love and care and a good opportunity even after he is arrested will change him? It is seriously hard to change his behavior.
First thing I would teach this dog is to stop chewing on the leash. Its not her play toy, its your way to communicate with her and apply a correction. If you have to get her to drop it first your correction is too late and she is correcting you not the other way around. Fortunately with an e-collar this won't be a problem, but I would break that habit as soon as possible. It might be cute to some observers, but it is a habit that impedes your training.

I just offered big chunks of "stinky cheese" (VERY high value, and $$, lol) while watching, with "leave it" command, while watching this video. My stinker love responded PERFECTLY. No e-collar, not sure why I felt motivated to "work" on this in that moment...but somehow, you put me in the right mind frame to work with my trouble maker. And yes--he DID get a few ounces of the stinky cheese after appropriately "leaving it". You rock, Tom!!
Posting this video on my Facebook, because you so perfectly encapsulate one of our main problems. You could have been speaking directly to us, me & Andreas--my trouble maker, working line German Shepherd LOVE. Best buddy ever, also biggest pain in my ass. He visibly "questions" commands, you can see his little doggy brain turning, "Do I FEEL like listening?".
If I can get strong, reliable recall, will open SO MANY doors for us. I LOVE this goober so much. Right now, can't risk it--if a prey animal or little "yippy" dog goes by, and he's off leash, we're in a world of trouble (I live in a suburban townhouse community, cars & small yippy dogs abound).
My fantasy is to be able to play "Chuckit" off leash. You give me hope & direction.
When we get new people at our club, that is what we have people work on the most. Recall is the mst important thing you need when dogs are off leash. So many people think the e collar is so mean. But love my e collar such a great training tool. Like a electric leash. After you teach the dog you very rarely have to use the e collar correction. My dogs love their e collars cause they know they are going out to have fun. Love the explanation ❤️❤️

lol, I totally agree with everything he's saying! The "scared of wolf" part made me laugh. I'm watching this with my 3 month old wolf hybrid puppy, who's as tall as a German short hair pointer already. He's so smart, plays fetch, sits, lays, jogs on the treadmill, and shakes, but his come command isn't as strong in all situations as I would like it. I'm going to snowshoe with him through the mountains near my home, drive him with a dog sulky, so he'll need to learn his commands 120%. I have 4 dogs including him, and sometimes I like to take my mare for a drive with her cart and the dogs run behind (during the summer) he'll need to follow along well, and so far that shouldn't be an issue.
Omg: 4 minutes into video, this IS US EXACTLY. Under right circumstances, he "gets" recall perfectly. It's when the setup isn't what he's conditioned to, that we have problems...going back to video, excited at what I might learn...also watching your e-collar videos, think that's the direction me & stinker boy GSD need to go in❤😆😘

this concept of "set up" is helping me break barriers with my dogs' obedience. They are 100% with their sit, down, stay... etc until I change the "set up" of the command. For example, we always practiced the commands the same way, with me in front of them. It turned out that they would only do the commands if they were in front of me first. If I was at a different elevation, or at a distance, they would be confused even by the simplest commands that they already learned. When I asked them for a "sit" at a distance, they would come to me first before doing a sit. They needed to be in front of me because that's how we practiced. However in real life we're gonna be in different positions, different environments. If we practice the same way (at home, close-up, with no distractions) we're never going to make the break-through to obedience at a distance, in a park, with distractions.

Really cool Video and so well explained! While ecollar training sound very interesting, those collars are completely forbidden in Germany, where I live. (Just live invisible fences). Which makes them no option at all for training here.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge through TH-cam. My question is: at what age do you begin using the e collar. We have a 4mo old golden retriever and he has become a bit rambunctious. Just want to train some manners in to him.
I've always had my dogs from 8wk old pups and never had them on leads, so they automatically stayed with the pack, however my 2yr old Golden Retriever i had at 4mths old and had to overcome a lot of fears in him. Sorted that and came to working on recall, i spent months and months working with him on a long line and he was doing great....until his scent drive came in and he was absolutely obsessive with scent on grass, literally like a heroin addict when we got near grass! Just had him neutered and hoping that with take the edge off the scent obsession so we can go back to basics with recall. Never had a dog that's so 'deaf' on grass.
Mine is the same and I am thinking about neutering him. Can you keep us posted on how your progress is going? Thank you and good luck!
Same with an unneutered male Lab. if he picks up the scent of a female (even spayed females) on grass, he'll take off with his nose to the ground. same with a few odd prey animals. his recall is otherwise fantastic. did getting the chop help?

I know you said in your video that dogs don't know if they have the e-collar on or not so they learn to behave all the time. I've been using an e-collar consistantly for over 2 months now on my GSD trying to train her to stay inside the "yard" fence line and not cross into the pasture to chase the horse and donkeys. She does fine for a couple of weeks with the collar being consistently worn and just when I think it's okay(ex:collar being charged so just this once for her to go potty)she takes off straight through the fence after them🤦♀️I feel like this is never ending with her.

PetSmart just discontinued all ecollars. So stupid, and aggravating. It's a piece of EQUIPMENT. Maybe not that big of a deal with a 15 lb ShitzuI--but my 90 lb German Shepherd, a life & death difference. Love how you teach an E-collar as a "positive" tool....

Yeah some dogs never need a ecollar. I have also trained an Argentine dogo cross with only voice. But my huskies are totally different. 2 always come when called but if a squirrel runs through...then forget it. And once they learn after using it enough times when done correctly they are smart enough to not need it any more
How long would one have to use the e collar in training for recall.
What age should a dog be before Ecollar training? I have an almost 50lb GSD that is 4 months that is pushing his boundaries hard.
So I have a question. I saw a person walking her Doberman off leash on a busy road with lots of traffic and feral cats and occasionally loose Pits. What if a dog attacked her dog before she could step in and help defend it? Now there's no leash to get the dog to you and if her dog is underneath the other dog or dogs if being attacked by more than one, shocking her Dobe isn't going to help her or her dog. Now what? Especially if the owner of the loose dogs are nowhere to be found - just wondering. I saw the no leash and just thought it was so dangerous, ecollar or not.

I think your training methods are awesome, however, I worry about dogs chewing on leashes. I had one that would chew on leash, harness, collar, anything he could get his teeth on... and would end up escaping if I wasn’t paying close enough attention. You just patted his head and said “good dog” while it was chewing on leash.
Tom, I've hear you say in your videos that when using a dogtra on levels 1-4 humans cant really feel it. I have an e coller that I bought sometime ago before seeing your videos that's made by dog care that has levels 0-99, vibrate and beep on it but I can definitely feel the level 1. In your experience with other collars is it normal for different companies to have different feelings on different "levels"? The dogtra's are expensive but if I'm going to do this I want to do it right. I certainly dont want to hurt my doggo, would you advise to buying a dogtra or do you think mine will suffice?
With RTCs (remote training collars) you definitely get what you pay for. This is a tool you can't skimp on. On the Dogtra, Tom trains dogs on levels 4 through to 7, and most people don't feel any sensation until level 12 or up. So your current collar might be more aversive than it needs to be.
Tom has started recommending E-Collar Technologies collars, which are brilliant and are currently on sale. They're still an investment, but worth it. Tom uses the Mini Educator model.

Things like E collars would be so expensive in Australia to purchase. I only want to use the E collar for off-leash times only.

The "E" collar,in my understanding, is an allegorical terminology. It doesn`t physically exist. Merely a term used to indicate leash or no leash.

How about my dog (A huge Dogo Argentino) obeys the rules and comes whenever i call. BUT.... Never hears me when he sees something exciting for him, like his dog friends or a long beach or a squirrel etc... he starts running with excitement and never recalls :(
I'd love to know what to do with my dog. I cannot afford an ecollor, if I could even afford one. My dog listens to me, except when it's time to go home from the dog park... She'll leave another dog alone when I say so, she'll come into my general direction, but she won't come close enough when it's time to go.
She goes out at least 5 times a day, 3 or 4 walks and one or two dog parks. We are there at least 20 minutes, running and playing with her ball. food won't work. Her ball sometimes works. Won't work if she has it in her mouth (second ball won't work in that instance either). Any tips?
Sandra Scholman She knows your leaving, like when teaching drop it at first as soon as they drop it you give it right back. Maybe call her randomly leash her then unleash her or even exit the park and go right back in. Or if you always call her from the exit or holding the leash also do it randomly.

My Dobermans name is America and he’s ok with my neighbors dog a intact male through the fence but they fight over me if they are together. The neighbor dog the intact GS loves me too are they fighting bc they are both saying she’s mine? My Doberman is fixed and trained the GS is intact and untrained.

So, I have a dog that is pretty decent with recall... he will come almost to me. He stays just out of reach. I can't even reach out and scratch him for a reward, much less get ahold of him.

The one thing that I noticed with this dog owner is you the trainer was correcting and praising the dog and the owner automatically butted in to try and correct you the dog trainer at 11:04. This causes confusion for the dog,. Dog owners need to know when to praise or correct the dog. I may be out to lunch but that is what I noticed.

Ginny Spencer - to you he might be overly explaining, but he is teaching this lady. I train dogs, many dogs, sled dogs, obedience dogs, but I am not a people trainer. I can train most dogs but when it comes to people, you just have to be repetitive and teach it again until the person gets it! Hope you can understand this, As a teacher you answer the questioner, not the question. sometimes you have to do it over and over again just like dogs! When I work with a trainer, both my dog and I learn so much!
@@grannygear1001 i am a.teacher. repeating the same lines over and over again does absutely nothing. He is a great trainer and listen to him all of the time, however, he tends to repeat same sentences back to back multiple times.
I think both of you are right in this instance. What we lack in this video is how the dog owner is responding to his information. Nodding with no verbal cue and a blank stare maybe why he repeats. Now this does mean she doesn’t understand but that she is analyzing the information given. Everyone reacts differently to new info. Some get it right away and some take time. I’m a bit of a repeater myself if I’m not given verbal or visual feedback that you understand.

yer dog won't come, because you only call them when you want to mess up their day. Call them all the time and give them nice things, call them when they're coming up to you anyways, call them and rub their ears and let them go back to what they were doing, call them and put the leash on and take it off again, call them and put the leash on and let them go back to what they were doing, call them and put the leash on and go do something really nice that they like.... then every once in a blue moon when you MUST call them out of a really nice moment that they are enjoying, they WILL come cuz they are used to just coming, they aren't in that place that "come" means "stop doing this fun thing whahah and I need to resist"!!

My dog is deaf.
I see this problem a lot with owners who have decided their dog is good to go off leash. My dog gets aggressive and barky (this is why I am watching through your videos) and the other off leash dog has no clue what to do, and tends to rush me and my dog. Off leash dog hadn't practiced the scenario and recall goes to shit.

I got my dog when he was 8month old, i told he toilet train, he was peeing on everywhere ,and he good now, if he gets out he runs away from us, we had family over he started snap bite barking okay i tell him okay,we leave him over night that keep dog over night they walk play with other dogs to,, we lift him bite me while lift him to the car getting seat beat bite snap at me, dog him home, i was clean next he start crying i when over to him down on floor talking to him he came over to me give me paw sat side me,,i drop thing on the floor he scared with noise at all he scared, started pet him he snap and bite me just not me my son,husband and anyone else, comes to the house ,he will not let me brushed him,he let us pet him alot of the time, he wil snap he is scared of me son husband we have him 4 year, and have hit him, i ask the woman that watch him overnight, she said she him in to bed food inside with him, she said barking at her in the morning to go out sude to pee, she said that he would let her put the led on him to walk,, he would go with her,, i just feel bad, we play him in the garden games, walk ,, just gets so scary when you pet him you think he will snap,bite you,,please can you help me,, I'm just scared he bite someone bad,, i do not want to put him down,,, my son ask for brother and sister from santa's for 6 years in all letters to santa's heart breaking, he said he want dog for 5 year ago we told my son mom can have anymore babies he just said dog dog, so i on face book i saw the puppy, and they were look for dog to go to good home, so i phone my husband send pic of the puppy, we when to see him, he love ciaran right away, and we took him home,, sorry this is very long mgs,,please can you help anyway thanks
