    The "leave it" command, is probably one of the most important commands... Nicely demonstrated !

  • @anthony_hw
    @anthony_hw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    We had a Boston (RIP Bowser) that we taught the leave it command, and it worked great.
    One day the cat was doing something naughty, and without thinking, I told her to "Leave it!"
    She didn't, of course--and the next thing I know, the dog took after her, barking. I was laughing so hard and got the Boston back under control, but the cat spent all day glaring at us from the kitty condo.
    Man, I miss that dog.

    Fun story from a few days back. Took my dog out on a nice forest hike. People usually go there to make a fire and make some food... this, of course, results in some food being thrown on the ground. My dog found a piece of meat and a quick "leave it" with a serious tone made him immediately go away from it. His leave it command was never this good when I used to train "force-free".

    As a service dog trainer and handler leave it/ food refusal is one of the most used commands. I can’t count how many times randos come and try to give my dog or my clients dog food. Leave it is also generalized to be don’t look at those people, that fake service dog barking it’s head off in Walmart, and anything I or the handler doesn’t want them to engage with. Reliability is key for a service dog. Thanks for making such an amazing video!

    I love how you use the analogy of children in your training. If your child runs out towards the road/street you would correct them in some way. If you love your dog then you would use correction to train them to listen to you just as you expect your child to listen. I loved this experiment to prove dogs are very smart. The do not get enough credit. Thanks for this video. I've been binge watching your channel and this is the best explanation. You use the analogy of children a lot but this video shows EXACTLY the analogy and proof it works and the dog understands.

    People are very slow to realize that for training purposes, especially w puppies, it makes absolute sense to have a leash on your dog in the house. The first 6wks of my Great Dane’s life w us (6wks to 12wks old) he had a slip leash on all day long, and his behavior, now at 14wks, is absolutely exceptional. Every time I take him somewhere, people comment on his good behavior and good he is on a leash.

    Love your videos. Totally agree with you for training dogs. Most of today's training is too positive. People let dog get away alot of easy to fix stuff. I would like your oppinon about harness. Harnesses are a big growing trend, at least here in Estonia. And 90% of dog with harnesses are pulling. And people just seem to accept that. What do you think?
    P.S. sorry for my bad english

    • @Cryan-
      @Cryan- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm also from Estonia and I agree that harnesses are super popular here. I see tons of new puppy owners use harnesses and conditioning their puppies to pull from an early age. I personally only use my harnesses for hiking and bikejoring. I might throw it on for super casual walks too but my dog is under control at all times.

    • @notifysend1015
      @notifysend1015 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harnesses are for attack dogs to create frustration by pulling into it, and for service dogs for people that need a harness to hold onto. For the general public harnesses are not practical and a lot of dog reactivity and aggression is created by the frustration the harness causes when the dogs are pulling into it. You can't correct the dog on a harness either.
