Great video, MAN people were MAD when their rare tradable items weren’t super expensive and can be easily obtained. I do wonder how many people lost their homes/apartments when they found out rare tradable weren't going to cost billions overnight and pay their mortgage.
I'm still mad about it. And not because I thought I was going to be rich; I didn't even get into osrs until after all this happened. I'm mad because it ruins the entire thing that made holiday rares special. They are prestigious items to show off your wealth; the "I'm rich" equivalent of a skillcape. Reducing them to the level of a frog mask is like letting people wear skillcapes at level 20. Party hats used to be the most iconic item in the entire game, and now they're just another piece of random junk you can buy for 5k on the GE.
@@uhlan30 yeah and osrs has their own exclusive items to showoff wealth and skill like blood torva, scythe, tbow etc. You can't make phats valuable in both games. What made phats valuable in RS3 was that no one knew they would be exclusive and never ever come back. If people knew that would happen in OSRS assuming it follows the same trends as RS3, then people would have stocked literality millions of them. They would have stockpiled so hard that they never would be able to inflate in price because there is far too much supply, even 10+ years later. They were never going to be expensive. It wasn't possible nomatter what jagex did.
@@MyNameIsSalo Expensive gear that’s actually extremely useful is not the same as an expensive item that’s purely cosmetic, that you have no reason to own other than to flex your wealth. The closest analog is 3rd age, which isn’t unique to osrs, and isn’t nearly as iconic.
The stockpiling issue could have been easily solved too. They could have made holiday rares extremely rare clue scroll rewards for a limited time, for example.
I played when this treasure hunt all went down and it was an awseome experience. I thought it was cool how they were pretty cheap, but still had value at around 600k-2m. I remember getting one in the treasure hunt lots of people in every world trying to get one. Personally i think it wouldve been a better idea that they release them the same way every year or so. They wouldnt be completely valueless and perhaps not be a insaine amound either. @@MyNameIsSalo
Little known fact - the scythe was tradable the moment it was originally released! It's status was changed to untradable only a few days after it dropped.
Wrong. I played that day. I went trick or treating for too long and missed the drop. No one could give me one. That was around midnight of the day of the event drop. I will never forget that I missed getting one.

Other factors also played a big role in saving the game, such as the addition of free to play and bonds in February and March 2015, respectively. Although it’s still quite impressive that the game lasted 2 years up to that point with such a small dev team and Jagex expecting it to fail within 6 months (according to Mod Mat K).
I don't think bonds were that important, considering it was a made up excuse for F2P to be added to the game. I don't think they were ever integral for the game to be added.
@@rokka7188 bonds do help in terms of the game generating more revenue, however, leading to more growth.

I need to save this video to link. I've met a few people who insist that they were screwed over by jagex when old school released because they had their items and stats reset, but refuse to log into rs3. It's been 10 years and we still have people who don't understand osrs was a fresh start for everyone.
I defo used to be upset about my stats, but honestly, what osrs became made me happy to play again! I miss the friends who never came back though. 😢
Mod Jacmob (Gouraud, his personal rsn) was VERY against OSRS and said itd never work or be popular before it got polled etc, he was even spreading his stupid opinion around the Jagex office before it was decided to be worked on.

I actually remember participating back in the J Mod party hat drop streams back then, it was pretty fun. I do reminisce a sort of nostalgia for 'vanilla OSRS' in a way, I didn't play the game back in 2007, I didn't get into a particularly high level, but it was pretty fun. Was without G.E, so I sold rope for 1-5k GP at the Catherby bank.
I remember being 7 and getting Easter eggs from the event and immediately eating them and being like “yum! Chocolate. Aw it didn’t even heal anything.”

I remember the initial release of old school as just a junior in HS, i was at walmart with my mom and we passed by the video game section, she made a comment about seeing a runescape membership card and offered to buy it for me. That day when i got home i played for almost 14 hours straight and remember grinding cow hides to make my first 40k to buy a yellow partyhat, the cheapest at that time. I wish they would have kept rares rare.
I would love to see more things like this where they drop random items across the world you can randomly find. I love the treasure hunt aspect of you never know what you'll find on your adventure.

Wish rare / discontinued items were still a thing in osrs, remember being in awe of hween masks, Santas, an phats back in the day. Now, nothing really fulfills that sensation anymore.

the rares now happen to also be very useful. tbow/shadow both very expensive. in terms of solely for flexing you still have things like the 3rd age pick which is like 4b, and other 3rd age items that essentially just flexes. granted they aren't quite the same as hat slot rares, there's not really a way they could even implement them in. rs2 rares were discontinued items from years and years prior, way before the game even exploded in popularity. if any item like that was made obtainable now for a limited time, they'd be farmed in mass because we have the retrospective of rares in rs2. im sure if it was possible they'd do it.
MMOs like OSRS are solved games--meaning we know how the game works. Even if they introduced items that were going to be discontinued, they would be horded so much that they'd be worth absolutely nothing. Unfortunately early holiday items being worth something was lightning in a bottle. I don't think you could reproduce the "awe" of it, period. MMO culture is a different beast now, and has been minmaxed so hard, that nothing like early OSRS/WOW/GW1 will likely never happen again.
@@cheezitza9639idk about that. You could say that about pre eoc. Osrs right now is pre eoc. Give it a another 5 years, i hope for another 07 os release. Inevitable updates will eventually destroy the game and people will want to go back again. Thats what im hoping for.

One thing to note. Scythes actually dropped in RS1, not RS2. I still remember killing cows in Lumbridge as a fairly new player and having no idea why they were appearing everywhere on the ground back in '03. To be a kid with no responsibilities in middle school again 😅

The addition of free to play and bonds in early 2015 was also huge for its long term survival.
Ofcourse the game was going to die if you dont have any f2p and no mobile app to play osrs. I wish they would release another 07 reset without ge, and no other updates with pvp minigames, tournys, etc being the exceptions. I remember when they released f2p it was a scam too. They only had like 2 dedicated f2p worlds or so and they were full @@truemultipking3591

Hells yeah! Glad to hear holiday event items are still a thing! I just came back to the game a month ago and restarting from scratch since apparently my account was hacked and reset back to tutorial island. I looked up event items on the wiki but wasn't quite 100% sure if I could still get things like the black halloween mask I've seen people rocking. Awesome vid!
You weren't hacked, all your old stuff is on regular runescape that's gone through a lot of changes. Oldschool Runescape is new servers launched in 2013, based on the 2007 version of the game, where everyone started from scratch.

I even vaguely remember being confused why my account had like 80 something mining in like 2017 when I logged in for an event. But I didn't really care and changed the password to let the account gather dust again.

Whenever talking about OSRS history I think it’s important to talk about the “Runescape Puritans”. I was a part of this group and there were many others too. A large portion of the player base had a terrible taste in their mouth after we felt jagex ruined the game we loved so we essentially wanted RS as it was- nothing more. I voted no on pretty much every poll back then if it didn’t exist in 2007.
I’m still part of this lol 😂 I’d make exceptions for Div or Summoning though with some differences

i remember getting a green h'ween mask at lighthouse dagannoths like 10 minutes after the update and selling it for a fury (3.5m at the time)

Jagex didn't want to to admit that the best thing for their company was a 10 year roll back of their current IP, because that would mean they have wasted billions on bullshit ideas.
They will need to do another rollback in a few more years.. hopefully another 07 reset

Nello this video made me so nostalgic. It's so weird because over 10 years later I think I'm more nostalgic about early osrs than rs2 in 2007 at this point. And I'm usually not super nostalgia driven, I've played for so long because I believe it's a good game, not because of nostalgia from 2nd grade, but that event with the phats running away brought back some memories.

I feel like they should have integrated RS3 and OSRS, and made it so you could trade your RS3 partyhats into OSRS partyhats. Have like a swap system in place. That would keep the items as ‘rares’ and probably even increase the price of the rares too
I ended up finding 6 pumpkins total within the first few days of the drop, sold them all for like 20m and helped jump-start my account, it was an interesting time.

I thought additional and new content saved the game from dying out back in 2015 like zeah and raids according to your previous video on this topic.
Zeah sort of did the opposite for a while. On release it was considered a pretty massive failure, but they later made it great.
Honestly, my dream of owning a phat without having to sacrifice an arm and a leg was fulfilled. The reason i log back in every once in a while to bask 8n its glory.

I remember getting my hands on some party hats very early on, and I sold them while they were still valuable. I was probably around level 10 combat at the time, and I already had 1m. Definitely made the early game a breeze which I didn't mind too much.

so weird how complicated they made the debate about rare items.. literally all they had to do is just adopt the same exact release schedule as when the original rare items were released and do that.. i.e. holiday items released during their respective holiday on year 1, year 2, etc etc..

Thank God for the 4 dudes who actually did their jobs and were passionate enough to not let the game die. Would've been easy to become lazy/give up knowing the game was probably coming to an end and you'd be on RS3 again soon.

the only skil;l that should be added to osrs if any is summoning because it was released at the tail end of 07 early 08 which fits into the nostalgia factor.

I got a Scythe on my RS3 account. Had a phat back in classic but was dumb and thought they'd drop in price so sold it.
Man, the release of tradable rare items set my account for life. Following the release of partyhats, I made around 50m buying and selling sets in 2/3-weeks. It was far too easy.

Remember this like it was yesterday I was training at rock crabs and a Blue H ween spawned picked it up and idk why but my 1st reaction was to tele as fast as I could to the duel arena because in my mind thats where all the rich people were and I ended up selling the blue for 6m cash

when phats dropped in osrs for the first time i sold my purple in rs3 and transferred it all over for about 100m.
huge regrets since i now main rs3 again but eh, atleast was top iirc 100 when i got 99 prayer after phats crashed

I remember the polls going up for this, I voted for them to be released once and never again. However, the polls turned it to the yearly obtainable. You guys were saved from the likes of me.
They shouldve did yearly- semi yearly release with minigames event like the treasure hunter event, so they would still have a value of around 500k-5m

I think one of OSRS' problems is it's quite daunting for new players. It's extremely expansive and the vast majority of the game is quite the grind, and with most of it being locked behind a membership subscription, people on the fence play a little bit and see it as buying a membership to work
Thats why there needs to be another 07 reset, this time no updates, just pvp minigames and tournaments. The 07 without ge is the best version. The 2007 version of the game doesn't have too much or too little disparity in player knowledge

I terracing video, as always! I do find the initial concept of having rare tradable items as clue scroll rewards, though. That way, rare items would have maintained some form of monetary value. A missed opportunity, perhaps.

Never got that whole needing 75% approval to change things and still dont get the 70%. It just makes it way harder for the "Yes's" to actually win and also makes 1 yes vote worth less then 1 no vote and that isnt fair. It should be 51% to pass thats the least amount needed for a majority. The whole idea is that whatever the majority of players want will dictate whats in the game right?
I get the idea but I disagree. I think if the community is split enough to be essentially 50/50, it doesn’t need to be in the game. I think jagex made a great choice ensuring things polled and added are only things the majority likes/agrees on. Some stuff suffers and we miss out, but I think we’ve made out overall because of it.
I logged into osrs to kill goblins to buy a phat from the ge for 21 gp.
That shit isnt possible in rs2/rs3. Now I can say i own a phat for the first time in my 16 years.
