After listening to Kent's Electrostatic Solutions hot-rodded ESL 57s at previous Capital Audiofests in Robin's room, and again in this video, both the 57s and 63s make me realize how little we have advanced sound reproduction in the last 64 years. Yes, we can now play louder and go deeper with more impact, but these stats can make an artist appear right in the room.

To my ears the Quad ESL 57 is the best speaker for ESPANA. The clarity of her voice and musicality!!! Thanks Peter and Robin.

On my speakers the 57s sound way better.

The sound of the 57 is astonishing!

I had been looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint. Thanks to you both. As a 57 owner I’m undoubtedly biased, but I’ve also owned two pairs of 63’s down the years. Peter Walker’s first ESL was so right that nothing he could subsequently design even approached the perfection of the concept, and I think that’s actually reflected in this excellent comparison. Even though both pairs here are significantly hot rodded, I believe that the fundamental contrasts between the two designs are very intact in line with my own experiences. Fascinating.

Usually the 63s just don’t boogie. The 2805 and 2812s do. But your 63s in this video sound terrific.

One disadvantage of the 63 is the grill (and steel cage) which has been removed from the 57. Take the grills off the 63 and then run the test, I'll wager the 63 sounds more transparent. Another thing I noticed was the 57 was playing a bit louder during all the songs (the 57 is noticeably more efficient) which can weigh in it's favour in an A-B switchover. Just my two cents.

The first song we were actually in the hall hearing her sing on the 57's. Felt like i was just outside the venue door with the 63's. Listening on Mirage OM12's pulled into the room.

The ESL 57 sounded alive through my Ls35a, the 63s sounded a little less so!

DNM is by far the best electronic I´ve ever heard, no matter solid state or tubes...Denis Morecroft develops his amps with the unmatched french Rehdéko full range spaeakers and the Quad`s. At home he hear with a pair of Rehdéko RK 145 - It is stunning, that you have older PA 2 mono amplifiers from Denis in your own specification. Wonderful, they sound amazing, I don`t miss the PA3S here.....

After hearing the Carmen piece I can't imagine why anyone would pay more for speakers than the hot rodded ESL-57s

Quite nice sound as a singer (a real one) words depict the message or accentuate the positive to some up in 1 word for each the 1st Quad I think I nailed it with "Pronounced" the 2nd came in as "Mystic" elegant flows with both. My 15" MartinAudio BlacklineX & Crown XLS 2502 amps running in mono reproduced nice. Hoping to get a Pioneer Mixer soon & a DAC, M4.

I have to give it to the 57s. Not a fan of them on the floor though. I've heard Rob's show speakers on the floor and they always sound like they're on the floor.

Nice test but the 57s should have been moved from being directly behind the 63s to give them the space that they need

Worst mistake I ever made and regret it constantly. I had stacked ESL 57s back in the late 70's and when the 63 was announced I sold my 57's and bought the 63 sight unseen. What a disappointment. The 63's are a great speaker but didnt have the 57 magic I loved.

Through my speakers the first set sound way better. Not so much highs as the second set and seems to have more resolving as well. Med/lows are exceptional on the first set nice and mellow compared to the second set. Sorry but I reckon the second set are more blurry and muddled than the first set. Where the first set seem to separate the instruments better and more detail.

On good headphones the 57's sound better balanced and enable you just to enjoy the music and forget the system, the 63's sound brighter and more detailed and as consequence highlight the surface noise, but yes higher resolution.

The 63 was more cold and clean.

One of the advantages of the Quads though is by audiophile standards they are not expensive. The 2812s are around 15k which for the amount of sound quality you get is an incredible bu
