    In 1972 I bought my first and only stereo system. The Pioneer sx-727 receiver and KLH 6 speakers still work fine. Dual turntable, Teac A-360 cassette player, and Koss headphones have bit the dust. Cost about $780.00. His system is better in every way. Love to hear it.

    • @TheTransitmtl
      @TheTransitmtl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's more creativity now than there ever was. Artists are pushing boundaries so called purists can't even understand. Thank fake dichotomy of true vs fake music is the dumbest thing ever. There's a finite amount of sou des you can achieve with an instrument but an infinite amount of sound with any of the DAW's on the market. Some of the most creative, genre bending and innovative music I've ever heard was created in the last 10 years. My first love was Pink Floyd, then Hendrix and Zeppelin and I still vibe to those but the richness and complexity of artists like Nils Frahm, Shlomo, Amon Tobin, etc blows that away.

  • @rick4electric

      "reflections showing up the errors in the room" i was really thinking at the same issue. I have Always had the feeling that to get a really great soundstage using omnidirectional speakers is a challenge. Actually i tend to lean towards very directional speakers. Very small sweet spot but also much less reflections to cope with. Maybe i am completely wrong in this approach. I do not know.

    think about this.... Sound ONLY exists in our mind. Without a brain there to interpret, it's just vibrating air. Now if these beautiful devices can help someone BELIEVE sound is improved in some way than in their mind it 100% does. There is NO question. Can these room enhancements survive scientific enquiry? Seems unlikely, but that isn't the point now is it? I love the idea of EVERYTHING in this room. I love the cables being suspended above the floor. I ignore the regular romex in the wall and the ordinary power transformer outside. The tape machine machine enhancements are superb. The giant price tag can also add value to the sound inside the human mind. It is beautiful. The human mind is capable of AMAZING things and audiophile gear is a wonderful expression of that.

      The trouble is with DSOTM is that the songs are too simple..It's studio effects album..good as it is, but the actual material is very, very simple..Also i tend to find that the vocals are quite sibilant on most tracks, or in different sections of the songs..I have the album on various pressings and CD's from the original 1973 Harvest to Doug Sax remasters and they all the sibilance to a greater or lesser extent.

      @DodgyBrothersEngineering 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      simon lloyd are you sure it is sibilance you can hear? I can hear reverb, echo, and decay but not sibilance. The extensive use of echo to create the effect of a much larger recording area is very obvious, and to some degree is making the vocals a little muddy. Is there one particular track you can hear it on more than others? The use of multiple overlays also makes it extremely hard to pick up.

    Very nice to see the "tone" controls on the playback decks. As someone listening to prerecorded tapes for over 60 years, these are absolutely necessary, as vintage tapes vary widely in equalization. True even for the same title, produced in different duplication batches.

    One more observation, a good high end DAC is upgradeabae for free, can play master tape quality sources and never wears out. A tape head starts to wear out as soon as you play it and heaven knows how much a replacement head costs.

    • @artysanmobile
      @artysanmobile 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Tomsett Tape heads are not simply replaced, they are refurbished several times before they’re done. On a non-pro machine such as these, it’s a big job just to remove and reinstall and realign... The head might be a couple hundred dollars, the job much more. Analog tape is dead and those of us who lived with it are the happiest to see it die. Maintenance, distortion, noise, inconsistent tape quality. I could go on and on. Today we convert those microphone’s gorgeous sound into data and store it flawlessly. I wouldn’t say the cost has come down, but quality, reliability, musicality - all way up!

    I neglected to comment on the imaging of loudspeakers which appears phenomenal in this video and I'm pretty sure it's even better and stunning when you are sat in front of these marvels. The instruments appear palpable, vibrating in the room, the image is tangible. It's astonishing! I see that the tweeter and midrange, practically vibrate from the same point. That's probably crucial.(If only these harsh brass instrument peaks were absent! Perhaps they need a beefier amp.)

    These men are totally mad but so what. It's art and if they adore music, which I think they do, then fine. At this level it is like appreciating a Veronese painting etc. My system is basic but I bought the best I could and it gives me huge pleasure. I suspect most of us haven't heard real hi-fi. Very sad generations growing up on mp3 and headphones. A dad passed on the love of hi-fi to his son. I think that's magical. I remember the first time I heard a decent system as a kid.
    Anyway thanks for this video. I would do anything to hear a few of my favourites on the system.

    Most speakers are straight out the front, these ones are completely omni. I tried to mimic how it really is, more. Semi omni. I have semi dipole speakers with FR drivers half (out of the box). The drivers are raised from the speaker hole (about a half inch). The sound from the back of the driver escapes through the gap, still making the speakers (basically) directional, but with some dipole mixed (and still has enough warmth in the med range). I love it, it has the same "open" sound as dipoles but more directional like most live music is (depending on the instrument, though). So it's still a compromise but sounds better than full frontals and full on omnis (I reckon).

    While the trumpets, strings and wind instruments sounded perfect, the Upright Piano and some drums sounded wrong. Some instruments are not omni-directional and only play forward or downward. So while there is no denying the experience is breathtaking, some things aren't right. Vocals are so natural, but low notes sound like they are down low near floor and the high notes sound like they are coming in high up. Very noticeable with her range, so that's rare, but there. This is a great design, perhaps in the future the single direction instruments can be configured to come from just a certain part of the speaker via one of the incredibly expensive amps on the floor. Until then it's not quite perfect. But what beats it? Owning a jazz club perhaps?

    Thanks so much for the video. I think MBL is state of the art, hand built in Germany by happy folks -- you can't beat that --- so I hope they keep selling them! For those who want this kind of sound in the home... yes it can be done DiY with dynamic all paper speakers and horns. For those who commented on how it's even possible to gain an impression of quality via TH-cam... Yes it's possible and not too hard with some practice -- that's how mastering artists do it in the first place -- using reproducers of a known standard (ie Yamaha NS-10's, headphones or whatever). It's much better to post TH-cam videos made with better quality condenser mics, XY, or Side/Front setups (aka Zoom HD6). Built in camera mics are often not so hot. Very nice sounding transients on the MBL's -- but they come across a little harsh at some freq points -- maybe?. I have heard plenty of 3 way horn systems at 1/10th the cost that would keep up fine with these... using vintage components that are about as clean and speedy, and smoother with even more detail. But they are not Omni, and not NEW -- so hey!

  • @512bb

    The system sounds spectacular but I'm sorry Peter it isn't the MBLs, it is completely due to the source components & you should have been more up front on that point. My first experience hearing what tape did was in the late 70s & I was in the recording studio when George Duke was recording his Master of the Game album & I heard it played from the tape through the wall mounted JBL 4311b monitors which are nothing to write home about & the sound was so stunning that I simply couldn't believe what I heard. No turntable or digital system can come anywhere near the level of performance of tape, the tape is in a completely different league & it doesn't matter what amps, speakers, turntables or cartridges you have it doesn't matter. I have little doubt your not aware of this & you really should have made the point as there may be some viewers that never had the pleasure of hearing this format.
