Wisely you chose, grasshopper.🙂 The FT-60 is legendary, and I’m embarrassed to say how many I own, which is more than three. I also have a 5D, 70, and a few other discontinued models, but the FT-60 earns my ultimate respect.👍🏻
@@gbounit I would also recommend the discontinued Kenwood TH-F6A. It’s a tri-bander that supports a full 5 watts on the 220 band. Yaesu has a few tri-banders and quad-banders, but max power on the 220 band is either 300mw or 1.5w, depending on the model. The discontinued VX-7R and VX-8DR also support 6 meters at 5w FM and 1w AM.
The Diamond antenna also comes with a flat washer gasket. This HT is not waterproof, but the gasket may help resisting small splashes. Water infiltration to the main board is not a good thing.

Oh it will plug in, it just will not charge... allegedly... the US models specifically say that in the owners manual. So it is weird that while I heard about this in video for CA, I am reading it differently as it specifies US models. The DC jack DOES work, but the cigarette lighter accessory. HOWEVER, it will power the HT, but will NOT charge the battery. Pretty weird, huh?
@@gbounit pretty sure it will still charge the battery directly, and including the drop in charger is just a workaround. Give it a try and report your results!
AIUI, Yaesu disabled plug charging when they started including the charger base with the radio. The original FT-60 did not include the base, selling it instead as an extra-cost option. I do not know what their logic was in doing this, other than maybe allowing bench supply operation of the radio without dealing with the battery charge load.
@@californiasomething No, @gbounit is correct, the FT-60 radios after 2013 will not charge the battery if the power adapter is plugged into the radio. This was to address some issue California had with devices needing to turn off after some amount of time or something like that. I have a prior version that will charge the battery from the DC input socket, and a couple newer versions that will not. The manual was updated accordingly to reflect the change.
Just few days ago I purchased FT-60R like new in box on eBay. Waiting for arrival… :) I hope it will work ok for me. Do you know differencies between FT-60R and FT-60E please? Also did you found the differencies between your newer version and the older one loaner?

I really hate the term "Handy-talkies"! Makes an incredibly complicated and advanced piece of high-tech electronics sound like a Kids Toy! In our group we always say HT or "Handheld Tranceiver"! Sounds much more Adult.
I got to be honest with you, I recently got an ft5d during a Black Friday sale.... And the TX audio SOUNDS LIKE SHIT!!! Seriously, the Yaesu flagship HT, the microphone (or something else) is terrible. I have wound up not even using the aprs. I believe you have chosen wisely! I might sell mine and pick up an FT60 myself!

Your ford/chevy figurement is pretty accurate. Your DC charger definitely will still plug into the radio, not sure where you heard that.

@@gbounit You are looking at it wrong. That direct plug to the radio will let you operate with out a battery

E is European model, and R is american model which has cellular blocked and NOAA weather stations

From where I know they’re made in Japan the batteries made in China and I’ve watched the other channels read that and the reading it off the battery
