Many years ago I read somewhere that emigrating means becoming a foreigner in 2 countries: the country you emigrate TO, and the country you emigrate FROM. That's why many people regret emigrating.

No there is a big difference. How come you be a foreigner in your own country? In a foreign country, you're an immigrant but in your own country, you're not an immigrant.

I took a 3 year sabbatical to Kerala, India. Rented out my house, sold my cars and left. The plan was for one year but ended up staying almost 3 years. It was a good experience. I could have made a lot of money and moved up the ladder during that time but money is not everything. Life is short, enjoy on the go.

@@deepakjagadeeshwar9404 it was a super experience. I ate like 16 jackfruits during that time 😂 had a lot of fish. Ate all of my favorite nostalgic items. Even something simple as coconut chutney was amazing over there. So ya took that trip in my early 30s. We’re not in IT so we didn’t bother to look for a job over there. Just enjoyed and stretched that dollar. I had a small rental income stream. That’s about it. Kids were small and it was easy to adjust. They went to international school in Kerala. It was hard leaving actually. Kids wanted to stay in India.
I still plan on retiring in India. I don’t think kids will go back but it’s alright. Let them stay wherever they are comfortable. For me it’s the cost of living and man power in India. That’s what we need when we get older. I worked in many hospitals and nursing homes here in the US. If you have good insurance, you’ll be alright 😁

What I heard is Gross US rent has to be reported for Indian income tax. Only deduction available is municipal tax. After that 30% standard deduction. Calculate Indian tax rate based on bracket and take credit for US taxes paid. But I am wondering how US taxes "paid" can be determined. US tax year runs from Jan-Dec. For India we could prorate the taxes from Apr-Dec based on the taxes paid the previous year. But for current year Jan-Mar, we still would not have paid US taxes, so do we just estimate it? Any comments welcome

The profits of an enterprise of a Contracting State(US in our case, since property is in US) shall be taxable only in that State unless the enterprise carries on business in the other Contracting State through a permanent establishment situated therein. If the enterprise carries on business as aforesaid, the profits of the enterprise may be taxed in the other State but only so much of them as is attributable to

In any case where the correct amount of profits attributable to a permanent establishment is incapable of determination or the determination thereof presents exceptional difficulties, the profits attributable to the permanent establishment may be estimated on a reasonable basis. The estimate adopted shall, however, be such that the result shall be in accordance with the principles contained in this Article.

No profits shall be attributed to a permanent establishment by reason of the mere purchase by that permanent establishment of goods or merchandise for the enterprise. 5. For the purposes of this Convention, the profits to be attributed to the permanent establishment as provided in paragraph 1(a) of this Article shall include only the profits derived from the assets and activities of the permanent establishment and shall be determined by the same method year by year unless there is good and sufficient reason to the contrary. 6. It’s my 24th year in the USA. I never earned more than $30k a year and it was paycheck to paycheck living but very comfortable with my own townhome , own car, mid tier neighborhood with great schools, low property taxes, refunds on income tax, place of worship, friends, helpful community, vacation every year. All surgeries (4) taken care of with affordable copay. I am so happy here as I’m content with little and don’t compare myself with others. If I’m laid off, there are enough comparable jobs which pay 30-35k with my skills. I’m able to visit India every 2 years and help my mother financially, sounds like a miracle, right? . I’m blessed. I don’t feel the lack of money!

I would also like to add that in the USA in my opinion there is no complexity while dealing with local municipalities, school districts, housing authorities, business licenses, professional licensing. All are treated equally, no one gets priority over others due to economic status, no need to bribe, just follow the law and the work is done as promised.
My interactions in Mumbai were not as desired, I was not treated well, things work very differently.

I'd moved for 4 years n came back to US. I'm planning to move back in few years..for now we moved to Malaysia for work temporarily. Hopefully in few years it's going to happen. Iv lived in US for 30+yrs. Finances are big factor in terms of taxes 😂I know taxes are big challenges, if you've any income from US you get taxed there in US. You've to file taxes in both countries. Indias much more flexible I can but not as organized. Certainly if you get a good /better opportunity in India, & live closer to family, a good health insurance, certainly international schools , good community with facilities such as hospitals/ malls/ grocery/pharmacy/laundry service( these days you find communities) with such facilities.

It’s surprising to see someone born and raised in India struggling to adjust. I can understand children having difficulties, but if you truly want to adapt, it might be better to stay in the community you grew up in, reconnect, and blend in, rather than creating a separate expat bubble within India. This approach doesn’t seem very encouraging. As Desi returnees ourselves, we adapted well many years ago. I sense some regret underlying this conversation.

I'd like to know if your guests have returned to India after getting their US citizenship or gone back after an unsuccessful H1B to GC transition attempt. I believe a lot of them do that after acquiring their US citizenship and are hedging their bets as well - it may/may not work, but why not try out. The other reason could be because their kids are closing in on getting to 18 years old and cannot be sponsored through H1B. There's something missing in the entire story....human beings inherently will do what's best and/or convenient for themselves / their families. If Timbuktoo provides an awesome dream for their kids, they will give that place a go too.

It's not just you. He's so unclear in his speech. Somewhere in the first 10 minutes, he says his team in the US where he worked for 10+ years was like family and would love to go back to working on the same team. I wonder how they developed such a great bond with his level of communication. I'm sorry if he's reading this but someone gotta say it.

Hyderabad traffic could be troublesome during peak hours. Pollution is not bad at all. If you have flexibility with managing traffic (close to work, timings etc.,) no issues in quality of life style. Also you can have driver who can help with the commute.

If you are young you can cope with traffic and pollution but if you are of retirement age and return to l India for good to live in a major city your health will definitely deteriorate.

@@DesiReturnPollution isn't bad at all???? Come on, don't generalize it. Pollution in Hyd is killing me for the past 10 years. It caused a great deal of depression. I lost so many wonderful opportunities because pollution affected my mood and mind. Hyd is overcrowded at this point. There are tons of blue collar as well as white collar folks coming to Hyderabad every single day.

I think he has lived in the US for far far too long. 15 years is kind of max you must stay. Now this person is trying to replicate his US style in India, which is not going to work. Also his idea to choose gated community with expats, means he is still not ready for India. He is trying to live in a self made bubble. His main problem is his accent and his kids also probably have a thick accent which is why he feels they will struggle in a local community.

@@DesiReturn Yes indeed, my point is people who are watching this shouldn't get dissuaded, he says we need to join various R2I groups. The R2I groups are full of OCI people putting their kids in IGCSE/IB and their plan is going to be very temporary. This is not true R2I. They have some fascination about bringing their kids to India during their most critical years and then send them again to the US/Europe and they try to replicate their western world in India.
For people who want to truly R2I, you need to mix up with locals and behave like a local. This person is just an American with Indian roots. He is not really R2Iing. I would personally not follow most of his advice. I will live in a community full of locals, no western NRIs/OCIs. I will send my daughter to CBSE school with plans to continue college in India. So 100% adaptability with India is needed. And of course no house helps for us. This idea that you want to hire a maid, gardener, driver and live like a upper class person, you will never really be able to associate with the real India. Those are my thoughts.

@@Revhappy829 absolutely! The choice to return seems mostly out of compulsion so the idea of creating a expat club itself shows no willingness or readiness to adapt , if a person born and brought up in India is not able to slip into the community with little or no difficulties how can you expect the kids to adjust , he is not teaching the kids to adjust by living in a US bubble in India . For some one planning the move this video is not helping , I find many foreigners easily adapting to Indian lifestyle and living true Desi lives

These are my views if I'm thinking to go back to India. (Exclude thise who have medical emergency & parents support reasons). Anyone disagrees these factors are not true now?? Are you ready to give this future to your kids??
    1. Water scarcity - tanker water supply and recycled source of water is not reliable and it is not a great future setup for your kids, where life essential is shortage . Especially in bangalore.
    2. Road accidents - chance of getting hit in road drive or walk is very high. When you get into accident by mistake a mob will be ready to attack you before you explain, eventhough not your fault. You will be victim one day for sure.
    3. When you live abroad for long and go back india, air pollution there will deteriorate your health by 10% as per health scientist. In much polluted cities, family stress increases.
    4. Sound pollution we adapt to when we move back, we think it's fine, but nobody considers it as important factor for your mental health.
    5. Diversity of educational fields exposure and self thinking ability of kids is missing in most of schools in India. They are like China producing or reinforcing mass literacy.
Basically Air, water, health hygiene, quality life is not available in big cities. Majority of peoples decision based on emotions like relations, money exchange value and domestic help. Everyone forgets that we need to give kids a future place where there are basic necessities (air, water, food, safe roads, hygiene) available for next 50 years.

    • @DesiReturn
      @DesiReturn  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes some of these issues are true (Few points. 5. Lot of improvement in education fields; Please check out some schools) If these are important, please stay abroad. There are lot of families who moved for kids. 1. bringing up kids in a larger family (when parents are not around; there is a larger family to support down the line) 2. Lot of activities for kids in communities 3. Kids social life and growth perspectives. 4. Kids growing up in India can adapt in India or abroad. It depends on what's important for family they decide which place is right for them.

It's one's personal choice to decide where they want to live. You're no one to say that coming back to India is nothing sort of blunder.
India has changed so have many countries in the World.
If you're ok financialy and make your life comfortable, why bother whether India is developed like China or Korea. China is facing problems like unemployment as well.
