They should allow players to save Barry, but once the elevator is lowered Barry ends up getting shoved off the wall by a runner zombie and dies from the fall
Then you should be able to save Barry too but you will break your legs by catching him and if you do that Barry will thank you and carry you to the boat and you'll get a new class and achievement
Basically what happened: they killed the zombies that tried to kill Barry, then all 3 of them got to the boat and after "the survivors have escaped" appeared, the secret cutscene played where barry said "thank you, mates, I think you deserve a reward" and the access to the cuirassier class got granted (true story, don't need to watch the video, you now need to try it yourself right now)

No Problem :)
