I worked at Spam for 33 years, but never got beyond putting pig bits in grinder section. One day Gerald had a stroke and I took over adding salt for the afternoon though. That was quite advanced, but nothing to do with the fancy ring-pull.
Gerald was my father, he had saved his spot at spam for me when he died. Then they informed me they had given the job to one of the young guys who had worked in the pig bits dept. I had all forgotten about this painful time in my life. Thank you
The JLC skeleton minute repeater you showed a couple of years ago was very loud, very clear, and nicely sonorous - and a fraction of the cost of this Patek. Oddly, it used the crystal as a "speaker" which is where the Patek got the idea?!
You’re probably right. JLC have been described as “the watchmaker’s watchmaker” so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that was the case. They have also made stuff for Patek in the past.
That's awesome. I have a buddy that is involved in weapon designs for the Air Force (he actually put the boot on Air Force One when Trump was in office). But his great grandfather was one of the main engineers to create the submarine. I love these stories
Love this format as much as the original. You guys working together, for one, have nudged several discussions toward the extremes of what most people regard as 'affordable.' Items between $200 - $1,500. Which offers appreciation of a watch’s qualities that might be overlook in lieu of being thought of as merely cheap. A very British way of poking fun at one of the world’s best watch makers without being disrespectful! Entertaining and informative, keep them coming guys!
Regarding the "key-less Spam container", the ring pull was invented by Ermal Fraze, in 1963, in Dayton, Ohio. The idea for the ring pull came about while Ermal Cleon Fraze was having a picnic and couldn’t open his beer can after forgetting his can opener. I believe that all subsequent ring pull opening containers were inspired by the design of Mr. Emal Fraze. Fred
So now we have hyperwatches do we? It's about time! Now the hyperactive hypersensitive hyper-rich supermodels can wear those hyper-expensive adornments on their wrist while driving around in their hypercars! Myself ... I think it's all a bit of hype!
Frederique Constant is doing some interesting things with minimising the component counts in a watch mechanism. And it supposedly runs at an incredibly high beat rate…who knows where it will lead?
Guys: you should be in the marketing dept. of Patek! You’re teasing (build-up) us without letting us hear the watch, letting see it from all angles to make us drool. Merry Christmas, John
Just a quibble: the diaphragm does not "amplify" the sound, it only resonates. Meaning that it doesn't add additional energy to system, but it does sort of spread the sound waves out over a larger area. For their next watch, I'd like to see the back diaphragm actually driven by the mainspring. :)
This is like the old top gear for watches, you have bits about the main content, watches in this case, and bits like this, which is similar to the conversation in the studio (conversation street in the grand tour)
@@caerphoto Welp in that case I'm selling the house, car and my body for it. I'll be the only homeless person with a $650,000 minute repeater, but I think it's a fantastic tradeoff . Any advice on my future endeavor?
I mean, with the way they put an aftermarket wheel/rim on the watchface, having a subwoofer in the back is just the logical conclusion. Underbody lighting and a turbocharger will be next.
I love this show, the only suggestion I have is at the end to have a short non watch related segment where you can talk about anything. You can call it "out of time". 😋
I don’t know about Spam’s research team, but I know my old neighbor was on the development team that designed one of the first aluminum soda cans with a pop top for a company called Kaiser Aluminum.
Love the show! But I can't not ask, why does the dial on 17:39 say email? I've seen it before and I can't help but chuckle whenever I do. What does it even mean?
Hey chaps, didn't it occur to you that the design of the dial works for exactly what Patek wanted to accomplish - waveguidingf and amplification. Here is a quick and dirty on it: the membrane oscillates, creating sound waves. Those waves travel backward (towards the backside of the case) and forward (towards the dial). Then, it probably has been designed, so the wave, reflected from the bottom, interfere with the wave traveling towards the dial to amplify the sound, which then "exits" through the mesh dial for you, and others around you, to enjoy. Sounds plausible?
Got to admit the system they came out with in genius. A fully mechanical watch and now what is a mechanical speaker system. It's pure mechanical artwork.
This show is great. Forget watches. I’m collecting microphones. The tech in the new minute repeater might be like a sub woofer in a teenagers car but the price is more like the insurance. It won’t “feed the hungry” but it will let them know what time the meal they missed was. Merry Christmas.
Hilarious. Your best so far. Especially because it was not only very funny but informative and really interesting for us mere mortals who will never ever see any of these marvels in the flesh. I am ecstatic.
why are there no spring driven tourbillon clocks? if there is an argument for one in a pocket watch, can't that argument be used for a clock on a wall or desktop?
Defeats the point of it since it was to increase accuracy due to gravity affecting the movement if the watch didn't rotate much (i.e. a pocket watch). On the wrist it is also debatable because your arm is always moving so for those it is just because it looks cool and is fascinating to look at (and probably build). A wall or desktop clock it would be even more pointless in terms of accuracy but what about decoration? I guess that would depend on how big you can get them, I read somewhere 27mm was one of the biggest? Not sure I will look around a bit more, but if so then it would just be too small to appreciate on a wall, maybe a small desktop one yeah but good point.
I looked around, and wasn't sure where to actually post a question for the talking hands...er, microphones...so I will throw it out here, and see what happens. Q: most worthless complication? A guy I work with brought his late fathers Omega Seamaster to show me. Beautiful vintage piece! He got so excited that he decided to buy a new watch off a Grey Market site. Spent a lot of $ on a watch I hadn't heard of...thats a chronograph. Got me thinking: why would he, or I, ever want, let alone use, a chronograph? Then I wondered, "what's the most unused complication in watchdom??" Any thoughts? ...I it just to say you have it?
If I'm not mistaken there is something that is called a dumb repeater. IMHO there are watches that perform ultra-quiet dumb functions and have the ability to perform with chimes as well. Please tell me if I am wrong.
Gentlemen, love your shows, sound of voice, knowledge. Listening to you is pure pleasure. I have just one remark though, maybe you can take it under consideration. Whenn pronouncing “Patek Philippe” you should change your accent slightly. Since Antoni Patek, founder of the company, was Polish, you should put stress on the FIRST syllabus of the word, while Philippe, who was French is accented correctly. So it is not pa-TEK phi-LIPPE, but PA-tek phi-LIPPE. Mr Stern pronounces it correctly ;). Great job guys anyway.
We know you want more watches…. click here: linktr.ee/watchfinder
Guys, I love this show! However, I would like to have different thumbnails or tittles to differentiate the show from the other videos
Just check the video length
Length clues me in…..
@@ca1637 didn’t read your comment before I said the same. Cheers
Also there are no hands on the thumbnail.
Fully agree, too much hype in the title
Let the content speaks for it self

I think the JLC Reverso minute repeater uses the sapphire crystal as part of the gong and this obviously faces forward - or not if required!
Great episode thanks guys. Loved the Blackadder reference!
Please continue this show, it’s brilliant
Fantastic banter, covering many of my favorite subjects
If I weren't already subbed, that Hall and Oates cameo would've absolutely clinched it.

Why does the watch at about 17:40 have the word "email" on it? I did some searching, and can't find the reason for this.
Wait, is this a regular podcast? where and when?
This is bottled lightening. please do more like this.

Like a piece of Mica on an old phonograph reproducer
It could make more of the energy not get lost as heat

Maybe on their next watch Patek can use Advanced Research to make a dial that is actually legible.
Wonderful, more please!
Ya know, I don’t think a $650,000 minute repeater is a game changer. That kind of just seems like the same game.
But this goes to 11, right? It’s 1 louder.

Ok, somehow incorporating a tiny snail would be wild. I suppose you could just design the flywheel to look like one.
Pretty sure Jacob & Co did just that with their " Bugatti watch " . I'm not too sure about the mechanics of it though
