About 17 years ago i got one in the knee and developed blood poisoning overnight. Woke up in the worst pain of my life and couldn't move my leg. Had emergency surgery the next day and they said i almost lost my leg or could've even died, also took me about 4 months to walk on it again after physical therapy and had to pack a wound until it healed from the inside out. Good times!

Im a retired Doc. I know it sounds crazy, but my brother and i always rub the fish over the cut and get the slime on it. The pain goes away fairly soon.

Yup, first mistake was picking it up. I just don't these days, I use my pliers to yank the hook without ever having touched the fish. Of I absolutely have too...and I can't think of a reason where'd I'd have to but suppose one comes up...I'd damn sure be using a towel. If he's done swallowed the hook. I'm cutting the line. Eventually the hook will rust away. If it don't, well fuck it bc that's not happening to me.

I dropped a little 1 footer and stupidly tried to catch it. Punctured the palm of my hand right dead center whole spine went in. Now I use a thick glove, and lip them if possible.

I had one that got his side fin right thru my hand, i lifted my hand with the fish hanging from it. Then ripped it out and the wound would not close for like a whole day

I had this happen to be and the pectoral spine snapped off in my finger. You should have seen the look on the surgeons face when I told him what he was removing from my finger. But yeah, I had to go to a plastic surgeon to get it removed.

Feel your pain. I had the barb of a cat stuck into the base of my thumb - with fish attached. I used the pliers to cut the fish off and went to the ER with the 1 inch barb embedded in my hand. Blue and purple streaks up my arm. The worst pain I've ever experienced (and I've broken bones). Hope you are doing fine. That was tough to watch.

Try using fish grips l never grab channel cats they always slime

I use 2 fishing pliers 1 for mouth 1 for hook

Always wear gloves, always carry a first aid kit and before you try to remove the hook, let the catfish wear itself out a bit. I also don’t grip them this way when not wearing gloves. Just had this talk with my son the other day while fishing. Be calm, control the fish, don’t let it control you, and when in doubt use a pair of pliers.

If a saltwater catfish spears you good, it will ruin your day. It's even worse when you have to pull a whole embedded barb out with pliers. Their spines are basically 3 mini stingray spines. Best thing to do is soak in hot water, it turns into a big wasp sting.

I was bank fishing at a stocked park pond today. I found a chartreus jig on the ground. I tied it on and cast it later for fun. Caught a catfish as soon as it hit the bottom. I was not having fun getting the hook out. It was too small to grab like in these videos. I found this video because I was looking for advice.
