Honestly, might be the smarter way to do things. Bring everyone up to the same level instead of slamming one character down. I suppose it does depend on the game though. Labcoat was way overtuned.

It pays to be middling in tier lists -it means you can survive the Level 3 mix nerf stick I think it's cool to see some other characters who struggled with tools to tango with the top tiers get their moment to shine in Season 4+ Hopefully we can really get loose when rollback is finally implemented in 2028 lol
That's why, contrary to popular belief, you don't want to pick top tiers in fighting games that are currently being updated. You don't know what they could take from you. 18's a great example of why the "inoffensive yet fairly strong mid-high tier" is much better long term. I hope all the people who mained her since season 1 feel lucky, considering they have experience with a character who is really strong now. Compared to season 1 Android 16 mains, who picked a top tier short-term, but then got nerfed really hard and struggled a long time in the following seasons, the "inoffensive mid tier" is stronger to stick with long-term.
Aside from the really interesting meta info in this video, something else that i find interesting about 18 is related to the release window of Fighterz. When Fighterz came out, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F had come out, and Super had progressed through the Goku Black Arc. But the Tournament of Power arc hadn’t yet aired. As such, 18 was still far and away the most popular of the Androids, at least compared to her brother. Over the years, 18 was almost always the default pick in DBZ games when picking a representative of the Android arc, after Cell. 16 usually followed, and you sometimes even got Gero before 17. 18 was simply more popular, and she got a ton of team-up moves with 17 anyway. She even got moved like the barrier that technically only 17 ever used in the show, on the grounds that the two almost certainly had the same equipment. Fighterz is interesting because it straddles the line between that era, and everyone getting hyped for 17 after the Tournament of Power. After his showing in Super, people were excited about him hard-carrying the team to victory at the end. And in a later season of DLC, Fighterz added 17 as a solo character, using moves displayed in super (and in Dragonball Xenoverse of all things). It’s just a sort of a neat time capsule of the time period that DBFZ’s release and support happened in.
I'm also glad she didn't get stuck with her tracksuit design like all the other characters with design changes in super. The tracksuit look didn't exist yet.
yeah they gave her the design to reflect the era she's inspired by which is nice. and then boom TOP android 17 as a different character and everyone wins

A18 is a really unique character especially for base roster, with extremely specific tools at the cost of stubby normals that for most of the game’s lifetime held her back from top tier status. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the stupid meter gain if you accidentally collided with the barrier though.

I've played 18 since season 2, and I'm super happy she's great now. Her and 17 are among my favorite characters in the series. Anyways, you always have good videos so I'm excited to watch this. After Blue Vegeta, SS Vegeta and now 18, it seems like whatever characters I feel like learning happen to become top tiers. I just need something for Base Goku now.
@@JustArten both supers are pretty good in general, and as your last character he can the both of them in one singular combo, leading to VERY heavy damage
One more thing you forgot to mention that makes her TURBO crazy is the meter gen. Your regular combos with 17 summon build about 1.25 bars, loops build almost 2 bars, but the fact you can call in 17 barrier+your own you will build about 2.5~3 bars because your opponent decided to use a beam. It’s so insane how fast she builds meter, you can run her on a heavy meter penalty team like with one of the blue fusions and lab coat and never have to worry about meter. Just build it and destroy your opponent
yeah i went back and forth on mentioning this, i tend not to mention crazy meter gain unless it's in a way that interests me or its really really integral to the character's strength (like 17) although i shoulda at least mentioned that the barrier meter gain was increased at one point irc
@@MoldyBagel I think so? But I think it would’ve been funny to just have one clip of super saiyan vegeta giving 18 7 bars from pressing barrier+ 17 barrier to block the ki blast barrage. Also 18 is a point character so I thought it would’ve been a good thing to mention about her meter gain since the good point characters like ginyu, any vegeta, ssj4 gogeta, etc also build meter in interesting ways (ginyu with assist calls, vegetas with loops and gogeta 4 with combos and his A assist which gives more bar after level 5)
Haven't been following this game for a while, and that last tier list with Jiren, Ginyu and Beerus at the top while Gogeta and Vegito are in lower tiers (not to mention Bardock dead last) gave me massive whiplash.
NAH MAN, EVERYTHING LOOKS DOPE I've never thought of using Piccolo's SBC as a sort of "Vs" Separator, that was a hella cool start to the vid! Something also is that the "Before" and "After" images / text in the bottom right is more prevalent in this vid, probably cause of the lighter tone of the stage. Speaking of IT LOOKS AWESOME AS HELL, simple, clean, and I dig it a lot. You never miss man, good stuff as always! Very informative info (I actually didn't know a lot of 18's involvement back then to now in the meta compared to the other characters besides how good her snap was) plus the music sync was AWESOME and gave me chills. My favorite moment was probably the 'bygone era' picture at the end, it was really adorable haha

The reason 18 still has her lv 3 is bc she is supposed to be the mix character of the game most of her kit is for that, no character has mix engrained into her moves as 18, even the ones that had better mix in the past has been bc they had really good kits but 18's kit is spexifically made for mix

I really appreciate all the work and effort that went into this video, and it definitely made me wanna pick the game up again after avoiding it for so long. But it also reminded me that this game was always toxic lmao. The metas for every season were always really toxic and not new player friendly, especially as the game kept going into TOD territory. I really love how much freedom and options we ended up getting in season 3 and onwards but even then people still play the game like they used to. Infinite loops that lead into TOD’s where you don’t have much time to react to mixups unless you’re really aware of the matchup which would take hundreds of hours.
I simply see this as being rewarded for sticking with my character, I have been playing her since I first got the game back in early Season 2 and literally NEVER took her off my team, no-one paid attention to her until it was too late and now we’re on the last patch >:)
She has…everything… She represents everything that was insanely good about every version of the game And she’s the starter character in the Android Saga of the story mode, meaning getting people to try 18 won’t be hard.
I mean you SAY that, but... A) You need to get people to play the story mode. That's hard enough as it is. B) The story mode is a ginormous slog to get through for just ONE story, let alone completing both Super Warriors AND Villain Warriors Arcs to unlock the 21 Saga, at which point you have an ENTIRE THIRD SAGA to slog through while using a completely new character you haven't had a single chance to touch thus far, against some pretty tough enemies compared to Super Warriors and Villain Warriors iirc. And probably most damning of all... C) Most people are just going to pay to get 21. Meaning they have zero incentive and thus don't bother with the story whatsoever, let alone doing all three of the arcs.
Sure, but to see everything, don’t they need to *unlock* the Blue boys? Vegito still isn’t bad, and grinding up to get him from unlocking both of the SSBs takes a while
her level 3 oki was actually nerfed in season 2, it was somehow EVEN BETTER in season 1 'cause she could act the moment she touched the ground. She could set up a meaty medium 17 call both locking your opponent down AND baiting spark at the same time while running some basic mix, or do some disgusting 4-way ambiguous float mix that she can't do today. it's fuckin scary how Android 18 has only been middling in season one, and from all seasons onward she had some kind of tool to greatly assist in the seasons meta and being one of the ONLY characters that got to keep the nutty level three mix throughout the lifespan of DBFZ

What is worse is if you do 'know your role' which is my favorite reason to use 18, if you pit her at first she is a literal menace as the extra ki gain + spark if you so desire allows her to nuke you at the start of the match as she gets 7 bars off of 1 combo and she gets to waste then freely on the enemy.

ive considered strategies for branching out, although i tend to stay in my wheelhouse after i made one strive video that bombed. i have no qualms with making videos about other games but as long as i keep this as my job i'll probably stick with dbfz unless the channel is like literally dying, since i can't really afford to mess with my income unfortunately
I stopped played after season one because of the lack of rollback, but A18 was one of my favorite characters to use when I was playing. Glad to know that she has been eating well.
If I can keep it a whole buck, I haven't played DBFZ in forever, I only care about it when Lythero or Moldybagel upload a video about it. They always entertain and they have FANTASTIC taste in music. I get an enjoyable/rewatchable video AND some new bangers for my work playlist, while they get money from my watch time. Everyone wins! Unless youtube does something stupid
i double checked and i'm pretty sure it's right? the held inputs are the ones where 17 does not followup. it's a little confusing since the new throws look weaker than the original ones if that makes sense
I live in the region where one of, if not, the best canadian dbfz player is. Since the beginning he has always ran android 18, usually along with piccolo, and showed us truly how good this character was if used right. Had to learn to respect barrier lol, his tag is Marvtronic btw, also an og goat in mvc2 as well.
Still never touched the game, mainly followed your stuff, only to be blown away by the fact that the 4 way level 3 mix STILL EXISTS after all this time, like a fucking supervillain from the first few arcs- This shit is wilding. Never knew fighting game-balance can have such a compelling narrative.

The reason 18 still has her lv 3 is bc she is supposed to be the mix character of the game most of her kit is for that, no character has mix engrained into her moves as 18, even the ones that had better mix in the past has been bc they had really good kits but 18's kit is spexifically made for mix

I really appreciate all the work and effort that went into this video, and it definitely made me wanna pick the game up again after avoiding it for so long.
But it also reminded me that this game was always toxic lmao. The metas for every season were always really toxic and not new player friendly, especially as the game kept going into TOD territory.
I really love how much freedom and options we ended up getting in season 3 and onwards but even then people still play the game like they used to.
Infinite loops that lead into TOD’s where you don’t have much time to react to mixups unless you’re really aware of the matchup which would take hundreds of hours.
Android 18 has always been a stample of my team people just cant adjust to her options, So happy to see andorid 18 just keep on getting better!

She represents everything that was insanely good about every version of the game
And she’s the starter character in the Android Saga of the story mode, meaning getting people to try 18 won’t be hard.
I mean you SAY that, but...
A) You need to get people to play the story mode. That's hard enough as it is.
B) The story mode is a ginormous slog to get through for just ONE story, let alone completing both Super Warriors AND Villain Warriors Arcs to unlock the 21 Saga, at which point you have an ENTIRE THIRD SAGA to slog through while using a completely new character you haven't had a single chance to touch thus far, against some pretty tough enemies compared to Super Warriors and Villain Warriors iirc.
And probably most damning of all...
C) Most people are just going to pay to get 21. Meaning they have zero incentive and thus don't bother with the story whatsoever, let alone doing all three of the arcs.

Vegito still isn’t bad, and grinding up to get him from unlocking both of the SSBs takes a while
her level 3 oki was actually nerfed in season 2, it was somehow EVEN BETTER in season 1 'cause she could act the moment she touched the ground. She could set up a meaty medium 17 call both locking your opponent down AND baiting spark at the same time while running some basic mix, or do some disgusting 4-way ambiguous float mix that she can't do today.

ive considered strategies for branching out, although i tend to stay in my wheelhouse after i made one strive video that bombed. i have no qualms with making videos about other games but as long as i keep this as my job i'll probably stick with dbfz unless the channel is like literally dying, since i can't really afford to mess with my income unfortunately

I live in the region where one of, if not, the best canadian dbfz player is. Since the beginning he has always ran android 18, usually along with piccolo, and showed us truly how good this character was if used right. Had to learn to respect barrier lol, his tag is Marvtronic btw, also an og goat in mvc2 as well.
Still never touched the game, mainly followed your stuff, only to be blown away by the fact that the 4 way level 3 mix STILL EXISTS after all this time, like a fucking supervillain from the first few arcs- This shit is wilding. Never knew fighting game-balance can have such a compelling narrative.
