I tell my son when we get up at 5:30 am to go to jiu jitsu that nobody got good at anything by only doing it when they wanted to. They got good doing things when they didn’t want to. That’s the mind game.
That’s right! You’re doing a good job as a father!! 👍
I say that to myself every time I have to show up for work. Once you are there, you work hard, and you will definitely see the fruits of your labor. It feels good..
Oh, I love jui jitsu a lot. I've been sparring skilled opponents for over 20 years. I've been tapped out hundreds of times. I still tap. I still learn, and that's about it. Learning...
Only doing it when I wanted is exactly how I got good at singing
Montreal Roller good dad bro
THIS WAS AMAZING! I don't think most the kids realized the magnitude of the wisdom delivered! This is great for any age grappler 8-80!
This is why wrestlers embrace the grind. Great stuff !
Kids at jiu-jitsu clubs should definitely also have someone telling them these things. Right attitude is key.
John Smithson! CA STATE CHAMP in the 70s in case you did not know.
Still moving on the mats at 60 years of age!
Couldn't tell if he was 80 or 12
Real passionate teacher
My wrestling coach would say "make fatigue ur friend!"
To this day I remember that, no matter how hard always keep attacking moving forward.
I graduated high school weighing 115 pounds got a job on a hotshot crew fighting wildland fires.
P.ts we hike with 80 pounds of gear sometimes more straight up mountains no flat ground and no stopping and repeating the commands that came from the front of the line.
One time I remember fighting fire for 41 hours but still thought wrestling practice was harder. Fighting fire never made me cry, wrestling practice did.
Only those that have wrestled will understand.
Priceless info for any grappler. Thanks allot for making this video. 🤙🏽
I love this coach's style. Simple terms containing quality instruction. This is home top performing athletes are made. Well done, Sir!
Excellent coaching to them young kids. There's not to many caring coaches out there glad to see they're still around.

Very inspirational and very wise. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful greetings from Germany!
That's great teaching!
Hey coach, I hope you don't mind me downloading your videos to watch when I don't have internet. I always replay each video when I have Wi-Fi connection. It's a lot of info for me to take in. Plus I'd always forget what you teach unless I practice with my team mates which requires me to rewatch your videos a lot.
All good Brother!
Amazing stuff!
Hahaha the kids are like "wtffffff this isn't fortnite!" And I'm over here taking notes.
Hahahaha!!!
Haha Yeah Man
Brilliant tips!
this is good stuff 👍
Wow…. 60 years old and in that shape!? Wow!
My teacher rarely speak. And told us that you need to train so that you can do what you think, practice every day so your body remembers it all so when the time you need to use it you don't have to think at all.
In my opinion, this video it's more about to be a correct wrestler than a correct grappler ( not exactly same thing)... Don't misunderstand me, it's still a great teaching, so thanks for this upload
Fair. Thanks for watching!
Good stuff.
Foundation. Master the basics.

Who tf downvoted this gem of a video?
They are called “haters”. Gotta love em! ❤️
@@TeachMeGrappling Sometimes I accidentally downvote or upvote a video while scrolling phone screen down to read comments
Sorry that occasionally happens. I don’t know of a way to “erase” a downvote
I’m guessing lots of downvotes are accidents like mine.
I’ll try to do better
Is there any way of correcting an accidental downvote?
Thanks for your great coaching videos
@@davidhughes4785 you just push downvote again and it toggles on and off.
@@TeachMeGrappling Thanks
Dude’s a treasure
Coach Smithson has a really unique look and energy about him. He looks his age of 60+ in his face but his mannerisms, athletic movement and ethusiastic dynamism are like a 16 year old phenom. The way he moves actually seems like an exaggerrated teenager, like George McFly in back to the future or Bill or Ted from Bill & Ted's excellent adventure.
I'm not a big fan of the head over the knee stance but this guy is clearly one of best coaches in North America! Everything he said is fundamentally perfect, love his fast seminar format explaining the purpose of all the drills.
Awesome
that's nice and very helpful and everything, but I would avoid talking to kids for 10min straight, they fade, no matter how enlightening it is, which it was
That's somewhat true but the kids who are special are hanging on everything and absorbing every word. I used to listen to every detail when training as a kid, because I wanted to be better than everyone.
@@Nomnomnooooo The kids who are athletically special probably fade as soon as anyone older than them that isnt a pretty girl, starts to talk. The ability to focus and absorb every word is more tied to academic excellence than athletic.
@@dfpguitar you don't know what you're talking about. You say probably. I speak from experience. Excellent athletes are geniuses in their field in the same way an academically gifted person is in theirs. Intelligence doesn't make you a focused person either. Plenty of intelligent people with zero focus and drive. When you want to be the best in the world more than anything you listen to every word you can because you understand the value of a more experienced athlete's wisdom.
that guy is in better shape than me . way more agile im 34
++++...++++oo like for this video !!!
And for what you are doing for this sport!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Droppin knowledge!
Rockford Williams facts thats what I'm learning now
IF I HEAD TO PICK THREE GRAPPLING MARTIAL ARTS THEY WOULD BE (BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU) (JUDO) AND (SAMBO)
I didnt know fire marshal bill wrestled.
what's he saying .. mirror the floor?
Yes... it’s a way of keeping balance
Your chest should be very close to being parallel to the mat.
he's 60 years old, but he looks 80 and wrestles like he's 30.
Is he saying "mirror the mat" or "mirror the man"? Not really understanding the point he's making.
Roy Blumenthal he said "mat"
Yes mirror the mat. Basically he means keep your hips square with the mat so you don’t lose balance. If the mat was a mirror, you should look into it. Not an always thing but a good rule to follow when it comes to balance.
TeachMeGrappling Coach Brian Thanks coach Brian. Much appreciated. Great channel.
iasoto Thank you.
Thumbs up sir
👍
Who dislikes this?!
Is that dead pool with out his mask ?
I don't speak fish and chips
Kind of boring and unfocussed of a video compared to your other ones.
This was an excerpt from our summer wrestling camp. It was his last speech with lots of great grappling ideas and it was meant to be inspirational. If you are looking for technique, there are plenty of other videos. Thanks for watching.
