I had a 5Diii for like six years and I thought I'd be buried with it. Thing had 300k shutter actuations and was still going strong. I reluctantly switched to an EOS RP, then EOS R, then R6 because I started dabbling in youtube and I wanted a flippy screen and face tracking. Both the RP and R made me fall out of love with photography (for fun) because they were anything but tactile and responsive, shooting photos with them felt sluggish and cumbersome after years with a 5Diii, which felt like an extension of my hand that reacted as quickly to the scene as my brain did. In the studio for work I was happy enough with they RP and R, but for shooting any kind of real life (like a toddler running around in and out of the sun and shade) it was torture to use either camera. It was minor little things, like with the 5Diii the DOF preview button could be programmed to switch between one shot and servo by holding it or not holding it, but on the RF cameras it's a toggle to switch, so it's not muscle memory but instead is a mental note. Same with the lock, they ditched the physical switch (not on the RP) and now locking or unlocking the controls requires looking at the camera to remember if you're locking or unlocking, and making a mental note. They ditched the video switch and relegated video to a spot on the mode dial (RP and R6) so you can't save custom video modes on those cameras (or shoot video in shutter priority). I feel like a crazy person a lot of the time because nobody else is complaining about this stuff! Sure I've got 20 fps bursts with the electronic shutter now, but I just want a camera that I can use with one hand without looking at it-- like the 5Diii...

Upgrading from the 5D Mk3 to R5C, once Canon ships them. I don't think, I'll get rid of the Mk3 initially, because it's still a superb stills camera. And I do agree, that for photo, the 5D Mk3 and Mk4 were still superior over the EOS R and RP.

Got myself a 5dmk3 about six months. Ago and I absolutely love it.only using it for photography as I've no clue or real interest in video,
I use it with a 24-105 f4.and recently upgraded a 70-200 f 4 none IS for a 70-200 f2.8 MK2 and jam loving this combination though it is seriously heavy. But the images are fantastic and seriously sharp..
Also have a 85mm f1.8 and again finding this combination brilliant especially for lovely backgrounds in portraits..

I still think for stills and simple videos, these older full-frame DSLRs still have a lot to offer but it's hard to justify really getting one when a decent mirrorless with 4k, 120 fps and eye AF etc can be had for a little more money. Great video. I bought a 5D mark 2 in order to use my collection of vintage lenses, the mark 3 in Australian dollars was double the price. No stabilisation, exif data, or frills, but adapting older film lenses and using them in native focal length on a beautiful sensor is a joy. I am stunned at the quality of the older glass and sensor. Using a mirror less crop sensor camera everyday highlights the DSLR tech limitations you mentioned, so it isn’t going to be my number one tool, however for landscape, still life and flowers etc it is sensational. I was tempted to pick up the 24-105mm f4 L lens, but had to keep my resolve and stay true to why I bought the 5D Mk 2 in the first place.

    Thank you for the video.
My son gifted me a 5DIII about a year ago with a shutter count of 215k. Obviously, he used it heavily for wedding shoots. Nevertheless, I accepted it with gratitude. I know it’s rated for 150k shutter actuations however, perhaps you know one 5DII (which also I own) clicked 2 million actuations and still working fine. That makes me believe my copy of 5DIII should also touch or surpass at least 500k shots.
I’m a hobbyist photographer shooting mainly landscape, street photos and wildlife. I was really amazed to see 5DIII meets almost all my needs for wildlife photography. The burst rate is fast enough, great auto ISO, good low-light performance, dual card slots and does AF at f8 with extender. Therefore, it’s a fantastic second camera in support of my flagship 1DIV for shooting wildlife. It’s already a champion in the other two genre I shoot.
    Thanks again.

I have seen too many out there for sale that are overpriced. Even at a decent price, glass is still expensive for what it is. Which brings me to the new Canon cameras. Although you can shoot both video and stills, I would suggest a real video camera that can shoot all day long and never overheat. Still, for the hobbyist, the mark 3 is a good camera however, if full frame is not that big of an issue, I would go APSC and get the 70D for the budget first starting off camera. Then skip the 80 and go on to the 90 before thinking of the mirrorless options. And keep this in mind, 4K takes up a lot of memory space. If this is your hobby, shoot in 1080 at 30 FPS. The 24 (23.89 something like that) really looks best on TH-cam shooting at 30. You will really notice the difference when you pan your shots. Did I mention the EF lenses are dirt cheap these days and those are the brand new ones collecting dust in back room storage shelves.

I mostly shoot concerts and stages and my 5D Mk III served me well for many years (got it second-hand a while ago, with very low shot count) and, yes, it's a tank. Very beer-proof, I can vouch for that. :) But in very low light, it's getting a bit dated.

@@KaiCreative I must admit mirrorless cameras have came far in terms of battery and lens choices and performance, but I just LOVE the feeling of heavy and sturdy DSLR camera in my hands that last all day, even if my back is 😢 😭. But for me(and probably other people), the deciding factor is the price. It's just way cheaper to get a used 5dmk3 or 6d with a 70-200 than selling it all and investing in a EOS R or RP and glass...That being said, I'll probably be making the switch in the next couple years because all new innovations are being made on mirrorless setups. Especially in video.

So maybe Kai Creative will have some insight into my question. I bought a used 5dm3. The body looks like it's been beaten to a pulp. However, the shutter count is only like 6000. The best I can assume is that it was used more for video than photography. How much of an impact will this have on the life of the camera? Everything seems to be working fine, but I just had a 5Dm2 shutter die on me after 3 months and it was working fine too. 330k shutters though.

I've been using Panasonic for video the last few years (GH4, GH5, GH5-2), so that is what is being replaced. Having said that, I'm not selling the Mk3 ... for stills, it's still a serious good camera and a good backup.

I had thought that my next purchase would be full-frame mirrorless, but the cost is a bit prohibitive right now, especially for lenses. I’ve used the 5Dmark III and IV for quite a few years each and can vouch for the photo quality being amazing particularly with L series lenses! Recently I’ve had the opportunity to use the A7iii and also thought it was fantastic for photos, the A7iii for video is probably also better with the in built log (although make sure you get ND filters) and 120fps, if you’re not interested in video then probably don’t worry about those points. One thing that does stand out is the weight - found then Canons get heavy on a shoot day. If you love canon glass you can also look at getting a Sony/canon adapter. 👍👌

I still prefer the DSLR view finder for fast action, the decisive moment. I also find that the lower pixels amount is better in low light; which helps me use a lower ISO, and much faster shutter speed. I'm shooting 2 mk3 cameras, a Sony a7r4, a72, and a Fujifilm GFXr50. The Canon 5d mrk3 w/ 300mm f/2.8 lens, is my best system for photos of kiteboarding, and base jumping f/4, 3000+ shutter, ISO 200 or less. The Sony a7r4 focuses rocket fast, but at 60 megapixels isn't very good at higher shutter speeds. Sometimes I feel that the higher megapixels is more of a marketing gimmick, and not really required. Just my opinion man. Thx for the video, I plan to watch your videos often.

Yes, I want to know how long you can film with the 5D Mark III. The 5D Mark II convinces with a good Quality of the pictures.

@KaiCreative thanks. I don't know what happened to Canon when they build the 5D Mark II. It has a limit of 12 Minutes for Filming.

they go for around ~$500, with 300k+ shutter count, in my country. would there be a better pick for $500? i had a sony a6000 with 85 1.8 i always wanted to upgrade to full-frame, but not sure if i can get sony that cheap. i'd probably pair Canon 5d mark III with either 50 or 85, at least until i save up for 70-200. what do you think?

Can you buy on eBay internationally? I paid 820$ for a mark iii with under 20k shutter. Get the mark ii or the 5D if not. I love my mark 5D classic too. I’m keeping it for life.

A reason for me not to buy is because I am a Nikon shooter. When I started I actually wanted a Canon but eventually got a Nikon D200. And I moved on with that brand but still curious for a Canon 5D. But I guess it will not happen because I have to buy my lens line-up all over again.

No auto focus in video? Seems like a over sight for being a great caneri? Still don't know many people that whine if something is done at 1080p except a few nutters

Great informative video; really helped crystallise my thoughts on whether to buy or not … ‘think I’m verging towards the ‘Not’ option, mostly cos of the focusing ‘issue’, which is only, has only become an issue cos of the R6 et al, (I think there is now far less forgiveness for anything not tac sharp. And I don’t hv yr years of experience !!). Thks mate. (Hv sub’d)
