    Wonderful. "Dance" is my fave Gary Numan album of all time. Beautiful synth work. Gary's naturally robotic vocals. Gorgeous melancholia. Mick Karn's glorious bass. Numan outdid himself, here. Gary signed my vinyl copy. Will treasure it, always.

    Just stumbled across this and thought it was great. Been a life long Numan fan and yes his music did nose dive after Beserker, but the current stuff is amazing. I loved Metal Rhythm and strange charm (especially "My breathing") but Machine and Soul" almost signified the end !!Thanks for sharing and I'm off now to part 2.

    Cool! Man love your collection of Numan. You obviously know more of Numan than I. Always thought Pleasure Principle was his official solo debut and Replicas was comsidered a Tubeway Army release. Personally I was too young but my older sibling was a fan and that was my introduction. I didn't buy anything after "Dance" but also really like that one. Regardless, thanks for sharing this link of your series with me. Thoroughly enjoyed the 1st and looking forward to the next two. Cheers man. Take care! 🤘🎶🤘

    Always thaught that "Crash" would have been an EXCELLENT follow up single to "She's got claws" which had been a top ten single in 1981 here in UK. Why only one single was issued from "Dance" when, just a year later, he issued three singles from "I, Assassin" AND got big hits with them on the UK singles chart, has always surprised me. The second Assassin single, "We Take Mystery" made number nine and is best heard on the extended (7:45 ) 12" rather than the 7" edit or indeed the album!.

    Outstanding collection Mike. Three years ago I spent about an hour digging with Gary at a shop in Boston. He is a very cool guy. I did not recognize him at first. But as soon as I looked at his jet black hair that was teased up on top I knew that it was him. I bought the album Dead Son Rising and he signed it up nicely. I got to check out a few of the albums like The Fury and Metal Rhythm. Which eighties release is your favorite?

    Hey man I appreciate the video I'm in my early 30s but I grew up with Gary Numan and love every single thing he ever released, with The Fury being one of my favorites. Barely anyone my age knows who Gary is, let alone his obscure synth funk era. Seriously, this is so cool to me, to find others who are Numan fanatics like myself.

    Great to see someone doing a Numan feature, been a fan since Tubeway and back in the UK this was a real fresh sound in the late 70's for those of us ready for change. This video has a rather US slant (obviously) to releases and background information, those of us from the UK would probably correct you on a couple of things but overall excellent.
    We all have our favorites and the fan base will always be divided on certain releases (I loved Warriors myself...side note; original UK pressings of Warriors had pressing faults on Sister Surprise when the long intro goes into full instrumentation,...it jumped terribly). Notable mentions might be releases unique to other formats than vinyl, such as The Fury Extended Mixes on cassette.

  • @puresalvation2009
    @puresalvation2009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Gary numan's lowest point was an album that you've missed out an album was called machine and soul. That was released in 1992. The album new anger was just a reissue of the 1988 album metal rhythm.
    Again I have to correct you. The album Machine and Soul was Gary numan's lowest point and was released in 1992.

    A fun video Mike, but with all due respect, this is littered with inaccuracies, but perhaps from a US perspective where Gary was seen as largely a one hit wonder it's understandable. For clarity:
    'Tubeway Army' featured keyboards. Quite a few actually. 'Steel and You', or 'Everyday I Die' are good examples. The synth was a Minimoog.
    'Replicas' wasn't a 'solo' album. On original UK release it was a 'Tubeway Army' album. The band line up is exactly the same as the first album. It's clearly not a punk album, but widely considered as one of the first hugely successful electronic music albums. In fact it's FULL of keyboards. It garnered his first No.1 hit single 'Are 'Friends' Electric'?. Replicas was what broke Numan in the UK with AFE, not 'The Pleasure Principle'. The legacy of Replicas cannot be understated, but indeed The Pleasure Principle cemented that legacy.
    'Telekon' is my personal favourite Numan album. It's perfect IMHO. The Teletour 80 was huge!
    Interestingly 'Dance' was received with mixed reviews at the time, and has taken a long time to be appreciated. But this was the album where sax was introduced, not 'I, Assassin' which was 1982.
    Perhaps you need to add in'The Plan' which was released as a cash in from Beggars in 1984 with the early Tubeway Army demos.
    Agree, 'The Fury' is excellent, but such as shame about that cover. LOL
    'Radio Heart' was by 'Radio Heart'. Gary only contributed vocals, and he never worked with Elton John on it. It was Hugh Nicolson
    'Metal Rhythm', released in 1988 you state as his worse album, but then say 'New Anger' is better. Errr... they are the same album. 'New Anger' is the US edition. All the tracks you mention as 'kind of a comeback' are actually on the 'Metal Rhythm' album which you say is his worse album. Errr...?? 'New Anger' was released in 1988 in the US, not 1992.
    You missed out the big one... 'Machine and Soul'. Released in 1992, which is almost universally acknowledged as his worst album.
    I do agree that there's some decent middle years tracks, but yes, it's not until Sacrifice things start to kick back off again.

      Speak to a lot of fans not sure universally Machine and Soul is his worst album I just think a section of fans say it's crap because Gary says it is. On reflection there are worst Gary Numan albums musically it's certainly not his best by any stretch of the imagination though but many I've spoken to don't hate it as much has Gary would want people to.

    Metal Rythm and New Anger are the same. Just some remixes on New Anger. Machine and Soul was his worst piece.

  • @skinmech4851
    @skinmech4851 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find your review full of contradictions and inaccuracy and think you really need to research much better. Knowing the singles from each album. Also knowing which album is which. Metal Rhythm you state is his worst album ever yet New Anger you say is ok and released in 1992. The New Anger album is intact the US version of Metal Rhythm whilst Metal Rhythm was released in 1988, IRS decided to rename the album in the US and was released on 1989 replacing two of the tracks for a Berserker album track and remix. So I'm not sure how you hate one and think the other is ok when they are the same album.
    Also Replicas was released as Tubeway Army and originally never credited to Gary Numan so wasn't a solo album. Later re issues of Replicas in certain territories did add Gary Numan to the cover after the Pleasure Principle
