DISCUSSION POINTS: Do you have a favourite Gary Numan album? How about a favourite "last great album" of another artist? Interpreting song lyrics as autobiographical: yay or nay?
Hi PR. My favourite Numan album's are Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon. After the Beserker album, I disconnected for a whole decade I'm sorry to say, until his Phoenix-esque "return" with Sacrifice, Exile and Pure. Thanks
Telekon is my favorite, followed by Dance, then the first Tubeway Army album, then the two '79 albums. I haven't worked through anything beyond The Fury, though I did see him live in 1998.
Numan has said Telekon was short for Telekinesis. There’s a line in “I Dream of Wires” that says “we opened doors by thinking.” Telekon is my favorite Numan album by far, followed by Dance and then Pleasure Principal. I’ve been a fan since 1980. His latest singles from the forthcoming album, “Intruder” are spectacular. Thanks for the review. Very well done!
Had this on cassette at 10 years old. My son bought me the remastered vynil last year. I still have the original Tubeway army album , their first. I've managed to keep it in good condition. This was his best I think, Replicas gives it a good run as does dance. Savage was fantastic and Intruder is fairly special. I'm going to see him next May in Dublin again. Can't wait. Listening since 1979
I bought it the day it was released in the Uk! I saw him on tour that year twice in Bristol, and also at the last two nights of the wembley farewell concerts! Oh plus i saw him on his first tour, The Touring Principle! Plus another 10 times during the 80s
“Sleep by Windows” cut for “I die you die”, that’s a travesty. Listen to the live version of Telekon, “Sleep by Windows” is amazing. “Dream of Wires” is the stand track. Brilliant album. A fan since 1978.
One must remember that Telekom was supposed to be a goodbye to his fans, speaking of the alienation / disconnection he felt at the time (the Japanese lyrics on “This Wreckage” means “I Leave You”) and was released shortly before his ‘farewell’ 1981 Wembley concerts; he’d been savaged by the music press who couldn’t understand this new format of music and he couldn’t stomach the vitriol they poured on him! As an aside on the original “We Are Glass” UK cover he wasn’t wearing black, rather it was the silver ‘Valerian’ jumpsuit he wore on Tubeway Army’s first single “That’s Too Bad”
It Must Have Been Years has only Guitars no keyboards. Replicas is my favorite song very dark. Progressive Darkwave yes and Down In The Park Darkwave brillant We Are So Fragile. I like the whole record top to bottom Telekon would be #2 yes then The PP and so on!
Telekon has an aura of mistery and this Is the cause i love It. There are many wonderful Songs in it. My favorite Is please push no more. The cover of Satie' s Gymnopedie, the title track telekon i die you die and sleep by windows
@@passionatereply I like a couple of songs from it. I do like a few songs in his wilderness years too but not the albums. You’ll enjoy him live. Great band behind him. I saw him on his last tour in 2019 and it was fantastic. Time before that was in 2000. Going to see him again next May.
I first got into Numan at 11 years old, though I didn't know much more than Cars at first. Then I saw the Teletour show just before turning 13. I was blown away. Telekon became and remains a favorite album by anyone. The copy I had contained Sleep By Windows and I Die You Die. As I have several different releases of this album I have noticed differences in the mix. There is a synth line missing from Remember I Was Vapour on some releases and the track sounds empty without it. Also, The Joy Circuit is a little longer on some but still cuts off before the band really starts to get going. I'd love to hear the whole tape of that one. I Dream Of Wires contains references to Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, particularly the "Mood Organs" where you enter a code to place yourself in a certain mood. "So I press 'C' for comfort."
This is a really good review I always liked him and the band cause it was dark a lot. Since I became a fan I picked up right from the get-go when I saw the Cars music video as a kid that he was dark. I saw it on VH1 a show called #1's in the mid or late 90's. Freaked me out reminded me of a vampire it was my first taste of Darkness or any Goth related music. I have been a fan since 2001 my softmore year when we got dial I started getting more and more old songs and new ones. I have so much of his released and unreleased studio, live and interviews of him and the band. He was not cocky he did not like himself on stage during the 3 tours in the 1979-1980 period. He said it came too fast and quick yes and he wanted to quit touring just make albums. Thankfully touring I, Assassin here in '82 as a tax exile with a different band then back to U.K. in 1983 for Warriors he grew up basically he said later watch The Toronto 1980 Interview with him and his dad he talks about not liking but comes off as cocky he simply felt clumsy and awkward on stage. Later he could come off as cocky but he was not and was a really nice man. He is very self conscious. I met the man 1 time after a show and saw 3 other shows! I play drums and I plan on doing more Numan Covers. Check them out also Devo my favorite band, I love The Tubes, The Cars and also many more. I been playing since the 90's with natural rhythm please watch my drum videos or movie trailer commentaries, homemade movies from 1998 whatever and please subscribe thanks so much!
This to me was the pinnacle of Numan's career, topped off by his now legendary TeleTour. After this album I think he went downhill in terms of his creativity. His first four albums ARE Gary Numan. The rest was just to keep him afloat financially wise. If you were a fan in 1979 to the early 80s as well as attending either or both the Touring Principle and TeleTour, you know what I mean.

Replicas does it for me. It must have been years is a perfect blend of guitar and keyboard led song.
Agreed
My Favourite track on this is Sleep by Windows.. Its a brutal love song 🌻

I love Dance but not much after that til Pure. Been enjoying his work in recent years. Seen him live twice in the last 20 years. Great live act.
No love for Berserker? That's my favourite :)
I have tickets to see Gary perform in a few months, hoping to see for myself just how great he is live!
