One of my favourite bands of the last 20 years is the Walkmen; I first heard them, of all places, on a Saturn Ion commercial in about 2002. Totally fell in love instantly. If this is your jam, by the way, this mid 70s yacht rock kind of thing, check out Paul Davis's output. One of the kings of this sound. "Cool Night" is probably my personal favourite, just because it has a weird, vaguely karaoke-machine kind of sound to the production that I really love. Feels like an Ariel Pink song in a way, actually, now that I think of it.

Everytime I hear this song or any of Dr. Hook's songs, I think of my brother. He died in 2017 at the age of 56 with liver cancer. He loved Dr. Hook and he was one of a kind. Always smiling and would give you the shirt off of his back.Miss you brother :(

I was probably the only Black in Da hood jamming classic rock! I eventuall got a new radio that was able to pick up R&B. From that moment on, I never turned back; however, I still have a special spot in my heart for classic rock.

My uncle had Dr. Hook on repeat when i was little. Everyday he would sit out the front porch with a mini fridge of coke cans, blasting Dr Hook. When i was older i learned that he was trying to stay clean after years of heavy drug addiction. He passed away from overdose when he relapsed. Or because music changes and it's constantly evolving whether you like it or not. Also just because it's older doesn't automatically mean it's better. If you actually did put in the time to find artists that fit what you love in today's music instead of listening to a random song in the mainstream, then you'd actually understand. But then again, I'll get hate because baby boomers just love to hate on today's society because "back then it was a more simpler time and it was all love and fun." Music is music. You can't say that "oh rap isn't music," when it is in the genre of hip hop. If you have a problem with it then it's your problem, not ours. This is why whenever I go back to listen to some of my favorite songs from the 70's/80's, I hate to look at the comments because arrogant people love to down on today's society because it doesn't fit their image of what a perfect society looks like. Just mature up. If you don't like today's music then don't listen to it, hell, just don't comment downing on today's music and just appreciate the song you're listening to. Simple.

That's the reason, I suppose, why I'm constantly digging up old songs like this on TH-cam. But like you, I cringe when I see the VERY PREDICTABLE comments in the comment section: "Today's music is just junk." "They don't make music like this anymore." "Back in the days when people actually had talent" Blah, blah, blah. These commenters remind me of when I was a kid and my now 88 year-old father criticized the music of MY generation -- music JUST LIKE this Dr. Hook song -- and said it was garbage and one day people would forget about it. Now I read these comments and it's the same thing all over again, but from the next (now old) generation. They sound like a bunch of old farts. Music didn't begin and end with my generation. That attitude is completely narrow minded. And honestly, everything wasn't golden back then. There was good music and there was bad music, just as there is today. And among the good from today, I can think of performers from recent years and last couple decades, like Adele, Bruno Mars, John Legend, Coldplay, Maroon 5, just to name a few, who I think are phenomenal. If I spent less time being nostalgic and more time exploring new things, I'm sure I could name many more.

Everytime I hear this song or any of Dr. Hook's songs, I think of my brother. He died in 2017 at the age of 56 with liver cancer. He loved Dr. Hook and he was one of a kind. Always smiling and would give you the shirt off of his back.Miss you brother :(

I'm 57, and I grew up in Da Hood! The broken radio I had could only pick up a rock station, so the whole summer of 1976 , I listened to rock and loved it! I was probably the only Black in Da hood jamming classic rock! I eventuall got a new radio that was able to pick up R&B. From that moment on, I never turned back; however, I still have a special spot in my heart for classic rock.

All kinds from classical, jazz, smooth jazz, country. (What would be classic country now) and I also enjoyed rnb, disco, etc. Still do, all music. Spotify today has led me to international music too for my collection.
Fun fact. In or around 1981ish, at the skating rink, I requested them to play Gap Band "Party Train" for us to skate to.
This earned me blank looks. (Burbs, remember).
I had to explain to the rink DJ who Gap Band was and of course they didnt have it in their collection. I was not even 10 and disappointed.....
I feel your disappointment! One time I called in on a R & B radio station's request line and requested "Do me baby" by Prince; furthermore, the DJ was white. He had no clue about that classic R & B slow jam by Prince. You talking about an ackward and disappointing moment! Boy oh boy! I believe this DJ had probably grew up in the Burbs too,and he more than likely was a DJ to a different genre of music before doing the R & B DJ thing. My uncle had Dr. Hook on repeat when i was little. Everyday he would sit out the front porch with a mini fridge of coke cans, blasting Dr Hook. When i was older i learned that he was trying to stay clean after years of heavy drug addiction. He passed away from overdose when he relapsed. I'll always remember him for the soft-hearted smart ass he was. I love you Uncle Dean. And thank you Dr Hook for the great music

Or because music changes and it's constantly evolving whether you like it or not. Also just because it's older doesn't automatically mean it's better. If you actually did put in the time to find artists that fit what you love in today's music instead of listening to a random song in the mainstream, then you'd actually understand. But then again, I'll get hate because baby boomers just love to hate on today's society because "back then it was a more simpler time and it was all love and fun." Music is music. You can't say that "oh rap isn't music," when it is in the genre of hip hop. If you have a problem with it then it's your problem, not ours. This is why whenever I go back to listen to some of my favorite songs from the 70's/80's, I hate to look at the comments because arrogant people love to down on today's society because it doesn't fit their image of what a perfect society looks like. Just mature up. If you don't like today's music then don't listen to it, hell, just don't comment downing on today's music and just appreciate the song you're listening to. Simple.

That's the reason, I suppose, why I'm constantly digging up old songs like this on TH-cam. But like you, I cringe when I see the VERY PREDICTABLE comments in the comment section: "Today's music is just junk." "They don't make music like this anymore." "Back in the days when people actually had talent" Blah, blah, blah. These commenters remind me of when I was a kid and my now 88 year-old father criticized the music of MY generation -- music JUST LIKE this Dr. Hook song -- and said it was garbage and one day people would forget about it. Now I read these comments and it's the same thing all over again, but from the next (now old) generation. They sound like a bunch of old farts. Music didn't begin and end with my generation. That attitude is completely narrow minded. And honestly, everything wasn't golden back then. There was good music and there was bad music, just as there is today. And among the good from today, I can think of performers from recent years and last couple decades, like Adele, Bruno Mars, John Legend, Coldplay, Maroon 5, just to name a few, who I think are phenomenal. If I spent less time being nostalgic and more time exploring new things, I'm sure I could name many more.
