Gilbert is one of few players that is truly a joy to watch play noodly stuff. His excitement is catchy and just so good. The Rick Beato interview is a must watch.
been waiting for a breakdown like this on that Japan solo for years. You and Ben Eller are the best at not only breaking down techniques but making them usable. Thanks man!
Must have been something in the air, as a few days ago I was working on those exact string skipping patterns. It's surprising how comfortable it is to play, and opens up different cool arpeggio ideas. Thanks
Dude, I love the shirt!! Throwback. That was my go to back in the day. BtW for anyone who sees this and is interested...Paul was just on Rick Beato's channel in the last few days: worthwhile to check out. Dude has to be ADD but he touched on some interesting things and insightful in terms of his perception of his own style and approach
This. Is. BRILLIANT!!!!! I've never had so much fun playing guitar since way too long! This sequence at the end kills me! :D I've always loved this lick so much and finally, you teach it to me! And you have no idea, how often I already started over at the "And now the whole thing very slow...". This is such a brainf**k! But so much fun to play and sounds awesome! Thank you, David!
Edit: oh, wow! There comes even one more awesome lick! Actually, in my original comment, I meant the paul gilbert sequence. But the next one keeps me away from my bed even longer. :D
I'm so glad you did this. Thanks! The little section of string-skipping in the DeMartini video seemed slightly more ear-pricking somehow though! It was magical. Maybe you added your own poetic license. I spent ages trying to work some of it out.
Uli Roth was going string skipping arpeggios in the 70s that used different sequencing patterns to make lessons about Uli Roths way of using string skipping licks
Ok, curiousoity has got the best of me. At the 9:41 mark in the video, why does the picture in the background on the left change from the cover of Mr Big’s 1st album to the cover of their 2nd album Lean Into It??
David makes it looks so easy. I guess it is, but it's been years sense I did theory so I have to go slow. It's awesome though. Gotta stop noodling and actually playing music. The diagrams are key too. I've finally found an internet lesson guy I like.
Watching this, all I can hear is that fast metronome click in my head. Thanks for showing this, I already happened to learn it by ear after that video because I just had to know. The end fill was what threw me in loops for a bit despite rewinding the video. Very foreign shape to me. It was fun to play and in a sense not that difficult pattern, I think you encounter the same pattern without string skipping from time to time. But upping the speed really challenges your muting techniques, if you want to keep it open without palm muting and you don't have a low action, you need to be really accurate.
have you listened to the new stuff from "the smile"?, justin hawkins did a video about their new track, he gave up trying to count and figure out what was going on lol, justin hawkins rocks also, the darkness, this lesson is also kind of funny, brendon small talked about these in an interview and how he drove his family insane practicing them all the time, in his show metalocolypse, these are the things skwisgar is always playing, pretty funny inside joke that isn't inside anymore after reading this

Great video. Had the good fortune of working at a club in 91' that Mr. Big came through. Very gracious with his time and information. 🤘
I agree he’s a super nice guy!

Gilbert was an instructor at MI (G.I.T) when I attended in 89

11:55 one of the most epic sequences ever created ❤

The timing of this lesson is impeccable. Gilbert just got an interview with Rick Beato!
Wow picked these up a long time ago but never really used them, thank you for the sequences and the lick
Awesome video!

Did you see Rick Beato's interview the other day? Good vid.
very cool thank you

I once saw Ritchie Kotzen tell someone that he plays his solos in C#minor because there are no wrong notes in that key?

Great video! I like to rip off the diminished string skipping lick he does on the G & high E string...
David, have you ever done an episode on Neil Giraldo?
And Gary Richrath?😊
Hes one of the first truly original shredders I believe

I love your lessons. RR is way overdue....please!
Would love to hear how 38 Special does Rough Housin. 😎

I love Paul's playing. But, just a comment… is EVERY player you profile a legend?

Are chords and melodies, riffs etc created or discovered?
👀
where's Paul? who's this bum?
