  • This is the 260th episode of Fully Charged and just possibly, the very first proper, informative and clear car review. This is very much down to the talent and experience of Jonny Smith, his first time on the series (but definitely not the last)
    After watching this, I know I have to up my game, I'm so thrilled Jonny could do this show with us and I'm really intrigued to hear your reaction.
    Thank you Smart for flying Jonny and Mark out to Toulouse and organising the cars.
    And once again, we could not have done this show without the generous support of all our Patreons. Thank you, and

      In fact I think Johnny should focus mostly on cars and leave the rest to Robert. Because unlike Robert, he actually knows a LOT more about cars, so he can actually do a useful review instead of just doodling around. And he's no less funny! Really enjoyed this one.

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Exactly. The US consumer wants huge, flashy trash cars. (i.e. SUVs and "cross overs") How often do you drive out across a field? Then why do you need a "car" with 3ft ground clearance? Or 28ton cargo capacity?

    • @streetwind.
      @streetwind. 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Erm... isn't this precisely the generation of Smart cars that will be sold in the US from now on? Like, they literally announced that Smart would only sell electric cars in the States going forward. And these three (ForTwo, Convertible, ForFour) are the ones that start it off.

    • @YohannParis
      @YohannParis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In Washington D.C. we have car2go with the old and new Smart, and they are lovely! It's awesome to sneak around big SUV/CUV in the city and make the city more fun to drive along.
      If insurance in the U.S.A. wasn't a rip off I would buy a Smart 2 seat ED tomorrow!

    • @RechargeableLithium
      @RechargeableLithium 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      3rd World Garage: The smart's draw isn't just about parking space. It's a perfect 2nd car for a typical US family, actually, especially for the folks in/near cities. As for economy, the EV's in another league at 122 MPG equivalent. I'm on my 3rd year with my smart electric as my only car and it's perfect. The electric gives me the cheapest driving I've ever done. In spite of the EPA range rating of 68 miles, I routinely run 85 mile drives. When I want to leave town, I get a rental.
      The only downside to the smart electric is that they're so damn hard to get - there aren't enough in the 'States to meet demand. I lucked into mine in early 2015 only because a family ordered one and then their job moved them out of state before the car arrived. It was taking 6-8 months from order to delivery, and dealers couldn't order cars to put in a showroom.
      Though I'd like a bit more range (maybe another 20 miles, actually) and a charger larger than the 3300W unit installed, I love the car. I guess I"m one of the 'exceptions.' ;)

    • @ferkeap
      @ferkeap 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mercedes have made the smart only ED (or ev) in N-AM from now on. They have not given up on it, but i think it will be only promoted as a city car. Seems oke from my point.

    Then sat back and tried to remember how many Times in the last 10 Years we own a 2nd Gen ICE Smart it had to run more than that without being possibly recharged.
    I honestly couldn´t.
    It´s used to commute to Work and hopping around the Village and i guess that is the main target of this Concept.

    • @EleanorPeterson
      @EleanorPeterson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, please don't! Vicki's a terrific gal, but she's also a pro racing driver; bringing her to Fully Charged would turn it into a lad's mag Clarkson era Top Gear, piss-about. Screaming starts, track days, max power, drift round corners, late braking, 0 - 60 times, constant emphasis on bhp, handling, performance, street cred, what's 'cool' ... No. Please, no. Keep Fully Charged as Kryten's idea of a sensible electric future algorithm.
      Of course cars are part of that future, and they can be fun, too, but at the moment Fully Charged is like the old original BBC Top Gear - Raymond Spitfire Pilot, William Woollard, the nice chap with a beard, some occasional tips on adjusting ignition timing, no schoolboy-level mucking about, just useful, practical stuff. Too much emphasis on car performance would kill this brilliant TH-cam Channel stone dead. (IMHO) ;-)

    great review, great personality, made me smile. Owned a smart in the past and was great even for the occasional motorway trip. I continue to be confounded by peoples range issues. This is perfect for the city where 100 miles is more than enough for a day or 3 . and charging whilst at work or in the evening is not an issue. This shows good thinking from Smart/Mercedes as ever to recognise reality rather than fantasy in terms of real world use.

  • @lmlmd2714
    @lmlmd2714 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Why oh why didn't they put CCS or Chademo on board? Come on, Mercedes.... The I-miev had that back in 2009, and the two cars are very very much alike in their target demographic. But the fact that in 8 years of EV progress, Smart/Mercedes have made a car that is *slower* to charge, and has virtually the same battery size is a weak showing. They've had a lot of chances to improve it over the years, and seem to have dropped the ball.

    • @BugMagnet
      @BugMagnet 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might have been a cost decision I guess. They might argue that the car is just supposed to drive you round town anyways.

      No fast charge means it has a slower maximum charge speed. But it has a much faster standard charge, since the iMiEV was limited to around 3.5kW.

    • @lmlmd2714
      @lmlmd2714 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OriginalPiMan Rapid and regular charging arent related though, and the 7kw on boars the Smart is these days just bog standard for home charging. People expect that and a decent rapid DC facility as well. I am disappointed to say the least. Smart have shot themselves in the foot with the charging. Get the basics right before you try and be clever with radar guided regen and all that jazz.

    I had a 2002 smart for two and sold it in less than a year. Mainly because the delay in the gear box was a real problem in roundabouts. It was a safety issue - my car wouldn't move while others were coming straight at me.
    Other issues were it was noisy, the heating barely worked and the quality of the interiors left much to be desired.
    I see none of those problems with this car!
    It is definitely a contender for my new car.

      The Tesla Roadster wasn't manufactured by Tesla, its a Lotus in disguise. Rebadged in San Jose, and e-drivetrain installed, but its certainly not "mass produced".

    I've had my ED four-2 for a year now and I love it!
    Mileage claims are slightly
    Wrong.
    Plus you can't use the heater or aircon unless you want to take 20miles off the range. I've had winter pack which is heated seats plus steering wheel for that reason.
    In the summer of 2018 I only had 100miles once.
    Average mileage in summer is about 85-95 but as soon as you hit winter it will be 65-75 if I'm lucky.
    Around town it's awesome. But motorway driving sucks that juice out.
    Last point is the car should be in Eco mode standard with the button being sports mode because it's fast very fast in startard mode.

    Uuhh, yet another low range ev, face palm 🤦‍♂️ that costs as much your average consumer car that can do 400-500 miles per range & has low carbon emissions. Slow charging as well. It's a glorified covered electric wheelchair. I love Evs but why do car company's insist on delivering piss poor ranged over priced Evs so they can sell more dirty fossil fuel cars ....

    • @supercooper92
      @supercooper92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How often do you drive more than 100 miles in one day?

    • @supercooper92
      @supercooper92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Okay, that wasn't helpful.
      I just can't understand the obsession with comparing huge ranges to petrol vehicles.
      You plug it in overnight (when you're asleep), so you're never making a trip to a petrol station. Surely the range only comes into play if you do more than 100 miles in one day?

    • @DavidSusiloUnscripted
      @DavidSusiloUnscripted 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harry C. The problem is that the 100 miles is not true 100 miles. Once you add traffic and air condition, have a full trunk, the range drops by 40%. Come winter time, the range drops another 20%. 40 actual miles round trip? That’s just not enough

    • @danmobile
      @danmobile 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      An EV doesn't lose even close to that range. Traffic doesn't hurt the range at all (not using any energy while idling and AC uses VERY little compared to HEAT). Yes, in Winter you'll see a 20% drop, but only if you run the heater full blast in a freezing climate. If you're in medium climate, heated seats and an occasional heat blast will barely effect your range.

  • @dpie4859
    @dpie4859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another "compliance car" with poor range, built on an ICE platform and slow charging. OK, it is cool, but I would expect more from a German tech giant: Why do they have to rely on Renault to build it?

  • @JamesABloomfield
    @JamesABloomfield 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    "It has 100 miles of range"
    Aaaand close video.
    Also it doesn't have any kind of fast charging? Is that a joke? Are they expecting people to pay money for this when compared to... any other EV on the market...?

    • @magnus2025
      @magnus2025 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      James Bloomfield I think that 20%-100% in 2,5h is pretty fast charging and it is a city car and not a long distance like the Tesla 😊

    • @Cloxxki
      @Cloxxki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      So you'd be buying your Smart for road trips and Autobahn cruising then?
      Main considerion in terms of range for most people will be the round trip dropping off kids to school, driving to work, and back via the supermarket. Many employers offer charging infra. Car is always full in the morning if you have a driveway or garage.

    • @skinlo01

    • @JamesABloomfield
      @JamesABloomfield 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but what about that one time a year that you want to take a road trip? This car is totally unsuitable for it because of the low range, which means it can't be your only car, which for a lot of people means they can't buy it because owning two cars is too expensive.

    • @thegreenman4898
      @thegreenman4898 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      thats the reason its 10 grand cheaper than a lot of other electric cars obviously.
      its designed to be a city car, and a study said most journeys are short;
      www.sustrans.org.uk/sites/default/files/documents/guidelines_16.pdf
      no need for a big costly battery in a majority of city dwellers cars.
      if you have an occasional long trip, hire a bigger car, simple really

  • @EforElectric
    @EforElectric 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really don't understand what is so "smart" about this car or a decision to buy one?

    • @owenjones-wells9395
      @owenjones-wells9395 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a small urban runabout, great for single people like myself, who really only use a car to go to the local supermarket once a week, and to go to the hardware store every now. And obviously for the commute. EG: I commute to and from work 10 miles a day. over a week that is 50 miles, leaving some charge for the weekend shop and small outing. I would be charging once a week, probably on Sunday evening, for very little cost compared to petrol.

    • @EforElectric
      @EforElectric 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually the word "smart" ( like "smart phone" or "smart appliances" ) refers to a product that has some more intelligence than other products in its category. So, how is this car smarter than any other car out there?

    • @owenjones-wells9395
      @owenjones-wells9395 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alright I see your point. Yes there are other 'smarter' cars out there, with better range and charge time, and more capacity, at not much extra cost, but for me its a good car. Everyone will have a different view and I accept that. But I see your point.

    I am tempted as dealer price for like new used is a few thousand bucks in some markets and it is worth shipping at 3k or less with 4kish on odometer especially with factory white paint unblemished kept indoors sold indoors and that asking being starting price duh. they did start at 8k but have dropped price,to at most $3,000 really FINANCED so what is the on six year loan a buck and change a day... cheaper to own insure fuel and all but afford time to stare at road like some duffus without a life then a bus pass. on bus you can get work done try doing that safely in any car available at comparative cost to total costs of transit from all parties....
    cars and bikes scooters etc waste road capacity and cost too much with cheap Wal-Mart bikes costing far more then this Mercedes to drive or pedal.
    But very few are made fewer are sold and like a six figure to buy small hybrid cargo van now just 20 ish also barely used but capable of 40 mpg all day,and night working nonstop price comes to haunt externals if not bargain seekers.
    this is a hot tip... check car.com install app buy 2019 hamster mobiles depreciated or just bolts smart cars or yesterday's 10k ebilkes for pennies on dollar off cl.
    The uae loves nuclear power electricity and has four on order or built already cuz duh they in there insane engineering guarantee oil will be in greater not lesser demand.
    nuclear heat created closed cycle turbine fuel works in cars etc. and makes threat nihm patent posed seem no story in defusal because only over my dead body will we ignore fission when powering cars by making them electric so diminuoussly disruptive.
    nuclear tech obsoletes burning and batteries it is only corrupt democratic inaction that has grid dementia destroying planet.
    batteries and electric 'motors' are greatest threat to life on earth simply put. trust me or study the facts exist for decades. oil is very bad. electrification makes it worse
