Blind man goes rock climbing (I can’t believe what happened!)

  • Matthew and Paul go rock climbing at the iconic “Pinnacle” inside REI Headquarters in Seattle. It was once the tallest free standing, indoor rock wall in the country. It offers one of the coolest views of Seattle, too!
Matthew has a fear of heights, and while Paul once shared the same fear - he explains why heights no longer bother him (hmmm, I wonder why??)
Paul has never been rock climbing before, so this is somewhat of an experiment. We honestly went into this having NO IDEA how it would go… will Paul make it to the top??
On the extended video Matthew and Paul sit down to talk about the entire experience, including a frightening moment that wasn’t included in the public video. Watch here: / 12-blind-man-i-85525211

My Dad was registered blind and the nearest he came to rock-climbing was on a family holiday when I was a child. On a walk, we came to a grassy escarpment; Mum and I pressed on, huffing and puffing. Dad, being very portly, was afraid of missing his footing, slipping and rolling down to the bottom so he sat and inched his way up backwards on his rump. When he reached the top fifteen minutes later, he - how shall I put it? - roundly condemned us for leaving a poor old chubby dim halfway up a hill like the Grand Old Duke of York. Sorry, Dad!

This actually seems like it has potential to be an incredible sport for blind & low vision people. It’s so tactile, I’d honestly love to see more of these places market to blind people. Loved the energy of this- reminds me of the camps I went on as a teen for disabled teens, it was always such an awesome & electric energy as we cheered one another on & saw one another achieve physical feats we never thought possible/try sports & activities for the first time

You should look up paraclimbing competitions! They're climbing competitions for disabled folks, including blind/low vision people. I climb, and it's an incredibly tactile sport. Indoor climbing means the holds are usually a brighter color against a flat background which might be helpful in certain cases.

@@MatthewandPaulOfficial It's been several years since I've been there, but now I think I may need to revisit. The closest store to me is in Tacoma, but it's just a store. There's another in Olympia as well, but also just a store. We need to get one closer to Puyallup because a lot of people in this area go to Mt. Rainier and surrounding areas to climb, bike, kayak, etc. and I'm sure we have the population to support a store here.

Wow! Can’t wait for this! Will be very interesting and exciting to see and hear about both of your climbing experiences by the sounds of it! 😬😱 I’m presuming you’ve both lived to tell the tale?! My partner used to go indoor bouldering regularly when we still lived in London as some brilliant places there! Although the climbing walls were nothing like the height of this one you visited, it used to freak me out hearing about each session he did coz the routes were often changed and pretty hard and he never used any guide ropes or anything… just feet, hands and a chalk bag! Bruises and callouses were a regular occurrence! He used to get sweaty fingers just thinking about climbing… did you experience this?! ❤️ 🤗

You know, people DO bring their dogs climbing with them. 😅 There are harnesses for the pups!
I totally agree, though, Paul -- rock-climbing is addicting. I've only done it a few times (the only gyms here are SO FAR from me, and I'm too much of a scaredy-cat to try it out in the wild!) but I loved doing it. It gives you such a sense of power.
Unfortunately I have vertigo now, so I don't know if I'll be able to do it again, ever. Maybe!

Paul is a Rockstar! You did it! I never doubted your ability to concur that climb!

I have a love/hate relationship with spellcheck... CONQUER is what I meant to type but obviously Spellcheck thought differently! 😂 Thank you for the acknowledgement!

Oh wow that was high up!! I don’t even want to know how tall that is in metres!
I am terrified of heights so that was scary to watch every time Paul looked down!
It’s so cool that Paul found something awesome though!

Congrats Paul! I'm a climber & a 65 foot climb is big, especially for a first climb! My climbing gym has 55 foot walls, and I can only imagine how much of a difference that extra 10 feet makes!
