i think Alex simply is incredible aware of people their emotions/state of mind and he mostly kept talking to reassure Magnus and distract from fearful thoughts. Don't forget he's been with many people and he himself likely has experienced debilitating fear when climbing (actually I know he did, where he was stuck all alone free soloing).

Yep I can see why he is as good as he is looking at this from a complete novice perspective. Lingering on past holds and difficulty can cloud your brain and make you not "be in the moment" so to speak. There is a time and place to reflect on dangerous moments of the climb, and it's best to not reflect on those when you're hundreds of feet in the air with no protection.

I feel like Alex's entire commentary is geared to managing Magnus' emotions and guiding Magnus' thought pattern. So if he says "look at the Vegas stip over there" it's not because he wants to show the strip, its to keep Magnus from ruminating on how dire his situation is.
And he puts a positive spin on everything. Magnus - "that was scary" Alex...yup, how do your feet feel? Magnus - "That was slippery" Alex - that is actually good because it makes you more purposeful.

Most of the best free soloist who have died did not die on difficult routes but on climbs like this they had gotten careless doing as a warm-up or teaching new soloist and did not have the hyperfocus necessary where 1 minor mistake can become deadly.

  • @TheQuicksilver115

I think I said it on the original as well but I'll echo it here: This is the best free solo content possible. It's really eye opening to see Magnus shitting bricks on a 5.9! Most of the time solo content is discouraged because you don't really want to inspire others to do such a crazy dangerous thing, but seeing one of my climbing heroes so incredibly uncomfortable on a route he could climb in his sleep really punctuates how terrifying soloing is and emphasizes that this isn't an activity that even the best climbers in the world approach nonchalantly and neither should you.
Soloing isn't a joke, it isn't a game, it's literally life or death at every moment.

During this video it appears that Magnus is reliving the anxiety he felt climbing that day and wondering how he could (or if he could) overcome what I believe he feels may be a weakness (mentally) that he is not proud of. Let me tell you Magnus. Your strength of will is as great, if not greater than Alex's. Your completion of this impromptu free solo is an amazing feat. Congratulations. Know that you overcame your fear. You pressed yourself to the limit and overcame. Well Done.

You don't have to make a "better video" - just keep producing fantastic products and you'll be appreciated. Like I loved your video on the "worst climbing gym in Tokyo". It didn't have near the amount of grandeur, but it was safe, fun, and informative. The human element is very appreciated. Keep doing your thing.

    • @davidgardzella1797
      @davidgardzella1797 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Is a “better video” judged on the number of views alone? This poses the question would this story of Magnus free soloing garner more attention, less attention, or just a different kind of audience if the outcome were different? Celebrities die of cancer all the time but the story of magnus overcoming his fear and the physical and mental challenge of the wall with everything at stake is a positive story i feel emotionally invested in. I felt impressed and relieved at the end of the video. Impressed clearly by Magnus climbing abilities and relieved considering how Magnus seemed to be honest with his girlfriend about how scared he was at specific moments of the climb and hope that your relationship will grow in trusting each other. The other thing is that Magnus was clearly risking more than just death, this video is a “good video” because I feel so relieved for his girlfriend.
Another kinda dark question is well how good of a climber really is Magnus, what’s the riskiest most challenging thing that he could do that’s still surmountable. This specific climb feels like it was pretty close to the current surmountable limit of his mental ability Ie what he’s comfortable with and actually able to do without falling into a shear panic attack and making a mistake. Yes this was a surreal video i wasn’t sure I was going to watch. I saw the thumbnail a few months ago and only watched now holding out as long as I did for fear that by watching this video and adding to the view count I’m somehow feeding Magnus fuel to push himself to the limit. It goes without saying I caved and eventually watched the video because like mosquitoes drawn to a flame everyone likes a good story it’s just a hell of a lot nicer when it’s a happy ending.

Hmmm there's more people than you think who are capable of this, just look at online logbooks etc. However it doesn't necessarily overlap with the skills of being a good climber overall. As magnus says, its like a different sport. I think this was being thrown in the deep end a bit tbh.

Great video. I watched the whole climb video and felt a lot of anxiety during it.
    Well done.
I don't climb but I used to sail extremely fast skiffs in high winds.
Sometimes I'd be standing on the beach in really high winds and my crew who was crazy used to goad me to go out sailing with him.
The noise of a rigged boat sitting head to wind in high winds is scary. Everything flaps with a lot of energy and it's very easy to see the forces you are going to have to tame if you go out.
More often than not we did go out and almost everytime it was OK. Once or twice we almost bit off more than we could chew.
One time we capsized inshore and bent a mast. The other time that sticks in my mind is we went about 5 miles upriver in decent winds then beached and had a bbq then the wind blew up massivlely and we had to sail home against the wind. That was the scariest sailing of my life. We actually only capsized once but the whole time it felt like a knife edge to keep the boat moving as fast as possible and not get blown over.
I was a few seconds away from calling it and getting towed home by the rescue boat but my crew convinced me to continue. I did and once we got a bit inshore the wind eased and it became easier.
We made it home on our own steam but when we hit the shore I was wrecked. Absolutely grateful to have made it and completely drained physically and mentally.
We needed a lot of help to get the boat up the slipway.
A deathbed memory but never again.
    Luv and Peace.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you where insanely tired after the experience. Back when I did extreme alpinism and almost died in an avalanche, when I was back after a few days in the mountain back to the hotel I felt all the pressure all the tiredness in my mental and my physical drop on me. And it was actually a really satisfying feeling, like becoming alive again or something like that. It makes you want to do it again, and more extreme, at least for me that's how I felt.

I am a technical diver and it is amazing to see the parallels to free climbing especially the mental aspect of it. An important aspect of dive planning is Risk Assessment. The most difficult question only I can answer is: Am I mentally up to this dive? I know I have the skills but can I rescue myself if need to be? And once at depth, quickly up is not an option anymore. To Magnus, respect.

    • @UNUSUALUSERNAME220

I was a diver in my younger years. I stopped after my Dad died, he was the only one that I trusted enough to go out with. That's what amazes me about this video, even with Alex's words of encouragement I would still not be convinced. I had a good friend that became a SAT diver and after he got out of the service, he learned quickly how NOT like the service the private sector was! He would find missed steps and make them do complete rechecks of everything before he would go under. He developed some really bad health issues associated to the industry, which is something that they tell you in the military to expect. He passed away 10 years ago, but he worked until his age prevented him from going on extended dives. Trust is such an important part of these types of activities. These guys seem to know each other and they're both pros. My Dad told me, nobody promised you a tomorrow. I like seeing these guys doing these things and having someone they trust to do it with.
