Someone once asked me what the point of photorealistic painting was if the result is so much like a photograph. I didn't have an answer then but I think it's this: artists observe more closely the things that we all see every day but fail to actually observe it. When we see it represented in brush strokes, we observe it more closely because it is being pointed out to us. You paint with wonderful observation!
Its looking at the painting up close to see all the details that the painter has put in. Like the brush strooks. The art lies in the talent of the painter.
Photorealistic painting is ultimate and only technique if you paint something that camera can't shot, like fantasies, dreams and made up - non existing things at all. Big use in field of history, to show something that doesn't exist for hundreds or millions of years. Hard to take photo of that.
For myself, the point to photorealistic representation is.... to duplicate and transfer the experience from that moment in time... A picasso like painting just doesn't cut it....people may look at it and go "hmmm nice painting" and move on. But the more realistic details that are put in, causes the observer to not be able to help stopping for longer, and take time to gather and enjoy the same experience the painter had in the reason for painting it. It is then, the visual sensation also combines with emotion...two of our senses are massaged. ....in much the same way music which provides only an auditory experience... but also evokes an emotionol one. 2 senses are stimulated from one sensory input. Now - Do all that while eating dark chocolate ....and you may pass out ;)
Ron You expressed the words of my heart ! Very true. We think we observed everything of an element but when we paint that element realistically , we observe it's tiniest details .
patience of a saint!! that was fabulous to watch, how you have had any negative feed back is beyond me !! jealous nitwits, amazing , just totally amazing!!!
I sometimes watch one of your videos before I start working on my own paintings, just to get in the mood and be inspired. I've been painting a long time, but you can always learn a lot from watching other people.
I love realistic painters... and because they take the time for realism it's a sure sign they absolutely LOVE what they're doing! Considering most of the water effects were done with a small liner brush, this guy has the patience of Job. Which, is yet another indicator that he seriously loves what he's doing. This is extremely refreshing in a world void of patience and full of a demand for "instant gratification", and instant petulance if many do not receive it when they "feel" they should. Of course, this is what one gets living in societies where certain self-aggrandizing, self-serving politicians tell people they are "entitled" to whatever they want... whenever they want it... even if it is at someone else's expense! I love watching your work. Bravo, Mr. Smith!
Your passion for what you do POURS out into this video and is shown by your patience. Love your style and technique. Hope to one day have enough time to paint along with you. Keep doing what you do.
One of the most interesting painters to watch at work. His methodical and painstaking approach is beguiling. The end results are spectacular and very appealing.
Brilliant work. Just the tutorial I was looking for, thank you loads! My personal style of painting is realism. I've always been so intimidated by painting water, but you've shown me that it is definitely do-able with some patience and attention to detail. Thank you!
A much needed video for me since starting off painting in acrylic. Thanks a ton Mike for your sincere efforts. The painting is indeed one of your best works.
If it weren't for your interesting reference subjects and excellent tutorial, I would enjoy your videos for the music! You always have the perfect choice of music to compliment your painting! Thank you for all the thought and effort you put into each video.
Another masterpiece from mjs. The way of implementation is awesome. Each and every minute details are so important to him, that shows the dedication. Great artist. God bless
So much of (non-abstract) painting is about just understanding how the World works. Like here, just through having an understanding of how specular reflection works and how waves propagate in water, I can just sit back and learn by observing because I understand exactly what he is doing without the need for explanation. This is why it's so important to learn about the physics of light, and well, about anything and everything really.
I'm just starting out and wanted to thank you for all you do to help beginners, like myself, such a selfless act and I aspire to be even a quater as good as you are, absolutely incredible, I appreciate your skill with complete reverence, thank you so much!!! 😍
In love with this.. Thank u so much for showing this great technique of painting waters.. You have given me the confidence to paint realistic looking waters..
Thank you so much for this lesson and painting! I've been commissioned to do two paintings for someone. She wants paintings of cranes in a swamp. I'm on the water part of the painting now, so I came across your tutorial on how to paint the water --- the process. This has helped me a lot!!! I am a realistic painter too. And I am into details. Anyway, thank you so much for the tutorial. I love your work!!!!! Have a blessed day!!!
At last....I finally found an amazing artist whose loud, irritating background music does not drown out your voice, so I can actually hear you teaching. Thank you dear Michael. 😄
Michael i wanna say a big thank you for sharing your understanding skill and talent with us...Such a pleasure and enjoyment watching you paint and your art.Keep up the outstanding job.
At first I thought it was a flowing river. Omg!?!!!! I cant believe what you are drawing. You are so talented and a true professional... Amazing, fabulous, beautiful 🤗🤗🤗
It is amazing to be able to paint the movement of the river surface with watercolors. Also, it can be understood that the accuracy of the sketch is a deciding factor of the quality of the watercolor.
A #STUNNING end result. I'm currently working on painting ocean waves breaking upon rocks. When you began applying the paint to mimic the rippling water, it is so relatable. Thank you for further inspiring me, as well as sharing your techniques. It's genuinely appreciated.
Well that was just crazy good to watch. My mind ready to fill in for any unexplained anomily such as, "oh, that be where there's rock just below the surface".
