Those overtones, tho...#goosebumps And how about the chord progression in the tag? Holds true to the original score, and they totally nailed it. Wow...
I really love this song, and especially this arrangement. My only complaint is the balance seems a little off in some times. The background chords sometimes overpower the lead vocals, but that is me being very nitpicky.
ipvideogames a fair observation I would say. It's still really good though, but it distracted me slightly. ;) I find myself coming back to Vocal Spectrum recordings again and again.
Don't judge the balance based on this recording. I think Eric's strength is compatible with the quartet overall. I have seen them perform numerous times and don't think balance is an issue for them.
The lead (eric) has a unique tone and blend that takes a while to get accustomed to. If you listen to vocal spectrum enough, you'll be able to pick him out
I love Tim, but this one is all about Chris and Eric. When their voices blend, it's like melting chocolate, and it gives me goosebumps. When Chris nails those really low notes, something in my chest vibrates. Holy cow.
They've been singing it for at least two years for sure. But @TheM3talH3ad1 if you want to hear a studio version, Gas House Gang has it on their CD: "A Little Night Music"
This is AMAZING.......BUT I would kinda like to hear the melody just a taaaad more. Just a bit of a balance issue. Love the bass, Im a bass 2 myself, but he's a little overpowering in this mix (except when he has the melody, in which case he has the perfect volume level)
It's not that I couldn't hear him, it's just that the blend of the parts seemed a bit (and I mean just a little) off due to the unbalance. He has a very lovely voice that I would have enjoyed having at a louder volume. Just a choir nerd thing...my directors always focused on vocal balance amongst the parts. I guess it's just one of those things! :P
A lot of people do that, you should check out trudbol (Julien Neel) or daniscool99 (Danny Fong) or danwright32 or vanceperry, they all do multi-track recordings. I mean, obviously, Tim's a beast, but these guys are all great musicians!
Not to knock on Chris and Jonny, but the best open 5th I have ever heard is Keepsake's open 5th on the Somewhere Tag... youtube(dot)com/watch?v=ObX608Tw-9A The open 5th in question is around 1:40... It is gravity defying...
oh my god. I love phantom of the opera and always have done from a young age and music of the night is my ultimate favourite song of all time. this is one of the best perfeormances of music of the night :,) absolutely stunning!
You really think so? I think it's beautiful. It's a really intriguing, well-crafted and well-performed interpretation, in my opinion. They did a great job of reinventing it while keeping the same beautiful, gentle quality of it. I love it!
For those of you who would like to know more about the song "music of the night", it was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber as a Broadway tune and it was one of his best pieces. The song originally wasn't written for the play "phantom of the opera" but it was added in as a draft piece thus it became "music of the night."
I've always loved the ending of this song. The madness of the Phantom is revealed in those last few chord progressions. So dissonant, it shouldn't work, but it does.
Hey Vocal Spectrum fans. I'm relatively new to these gentlemen but they are amazing. I saw on one of their other video's that these men are Christians? Is this true? Also I notice that all 4 men have a medallion around their necks. Anyone seen them live or heard what they are? I've seen that the men wear these during all of their performances. Thanks to anyone who can fill me in.
FishHunter Hey, man. Did anyone ever reply to your question from years ago? The medallions are their gold medals from Barbershop Harmony Society’s international contest, which they won in 2006 (held in Indianapolis). It is tradition for gold medalists to wear their medals for performances. I hope this helps!
I had to force myself to stop singing so I could hear them, though...hehe. I agree, the lead singer could have been louder. He was closer to the mic than the outer singers yet you could hear them just fine. It's more of a projection issue than placement. Choir nerd moment over! Very beautifully done, I was duely impressed! It picked up on all the major parts of the song rather than simply the melody, which I enjoyed. That and it's MotN, and I'm obsessed with PotO...so that definitely helped! :P
I actually have, numerous times. I was a bit drunk when i left said comment but I'm an idiot normally. I had to rewatch the scene before i started hating myself.
that's cool I was not meaning any thing about their religious affiliations. Thanks for letting me know about he medallions. Do you know of any footage of their performances of that competition? I would love to see more especially of the song/s they won with :)
That was fantastic! Can I just say that your dynamics were slightly mixed up. The lead was very drowned out in parts. Other than that, it was a beautiful piece.
the tune in the begining is the same intro as in point of no return. webber uses the same device musically to introduce both pieces. you were right to recognize that.
I LOVE this song! And I LOVE Vocal Spectrum!! My only critique is I can't hear the words the Lead is singing at the start of the song; since the other parts drown him out; but otherwise the song is perfect!
These guys were the featured group at a barbershop camp I went to, really cool, the tenor, Tim Waurick does his own barbershop songs in the studio, with him singing every part. Every. Part.
Why do no one have any problems with the bass's horribly collapsed pallet and horizontal vowels?! Don't get me wrong the arrangement is nice, but the bass ruins it.
Barbershop doesn't have to be about perfect vowels. For Barbershop quartets, intonation and vowel agreement is more important than the correctness of it. No one sticks out of the texture, and the blend is very nice. That is the most important aspect.
Oh my gosh. Vocal Spectrum + Phantom Of The Opera = Gorgeous.
I can't get over this. I must have been watching this on repeat for the last 30 minutes. It's so good.
This is so beautiful! I love this one and the Aladdin medley.
+Cameron Offutt eh more along the lines of when i see an elephant fly
My chorus (Oregon Trail Pitchpipers) are rehearsing this song for our 50th anniversary show A Salute to Broadway Feb18.
Those overtones, tho...#goosebumps
And how about the chord progression in the tag? Holds true to the original score, and they totally nailed it. Wow...
good god, that was the most beautiful thing i ever heard
truly stunning. beautiful in every way. such pitch perfect accuracy, control, dynamics and gosh... everything..
They way they ended that piece was simply...amazing. Nothing else...
So awesome that even a herd of cows came to listen, you can hear one of them cheering at the end.
I want to like this a thousand times!
That is the most beautiful thing I've set heard :) it is beautiful
When you are listening to barbershop/a cappella and forget that there is no orchestra behind them, that's good singin'
my ears just came. which i guess is appropriate cuz this song is intended to be seductive in a sense ;)
fucking damn!! only thing more powerful is santa clara vanguard version.
Dude. Vanguard in 89 was ridiculous.
ipvideogames
indeed! imo 88 finals was also ungodly amazing. really thought they shoulda won that year too.
+saladofdoom42 i for once saw 88 i shared it on facebook it took me forever to find it
+Juan Peche ikr! there's a full show vid up on youtube right now of 88. vid quality is really good!
I love this!
@terfone16 awesome, thanks!
simply awesome
Amazing!!!
2:33--whoa! He sang some extremely difficult stuff for sixteen seconds without a breath. Amazing!
5:27 that 9th is actually perfection. Wow
they did sing: D-Ais-Cis-F(high). hope it's right.
I really love this song, and especially this arrangement. My only complaint is the balance seems a little off in some times. The background chords sometimes overpower the lead vocals, but that is me being very nitpicky.
ipvideogames a fair observation I would say. It's still really good though, but it distracted me slightly. ;)
I find myself coming back to Vocal Spectrum recordings again and again.
matrix86 Did you hear them live? Maybe it's different than on TH-cam for some reason? :)
Don't judge the balance based on this recording. I think Eric's strength is compatible with the quartet overall. I have seen them perform numerous times and don't think balance is an issue for them.
ipvideogames Yep. Except when the bass has the melody
Incredible again.... I would move the lead closer to the mic a bit, but wow :)
So many goosebumps
This is a wonderful way to sing this, I'm so happy they didn't ruin the song :D
The whole song was incredible, but 5:49 to the end...omg.
5:24 blows my mind!
Phantom of the opera! :D
The lead (eric) has a unique tone and blend that takes a while to get accustomed to. If you listen to vocal spectrum enough, you'll be able to pick him out
And yet, I fail to find an MP3 link or iTunes download for this.
Who arranged this?
I'm speechless, this was absolutely astonishing.
That one dislike must had been Raoul...
Do these guys have a youtube channel?
Should've kept recording, an audience member at the end of this video didn't get to finish his cheer.
I'm not sure I've ever heard a better open 5th than I have between Chris and Jonny
HEY.....I know that song!!
Beautiful. Outstanding breath control!
Courtney W Makes me wish I wouldn't have to worry about costs of private singing lessons to learn that properly. :)
SO GOOD!! Every chord = perfection, smashing baritone!
Can't wait to see these guys in summer in Toronto :D
Find the GasHouseGang's 2nd album and listen to that rendition. Nothing against Chris, but Jim sounds better.
Keem Osabe That’s because Jim Henry’s voice is a national treasure.
Wow.
That. Bass. Oh my gawd. Beautiful arrangement, and spectacular performance!
This is AMAZING.......BUT I would kinda like to hear the melody just a taaaad more. Just a bit of a balance issue. Love the bass, Im a bass 2 myself, but he's a little overpowering in this mix (except when he has the melody, in which case he has the perfect volume level)
Nice!
When is "It's not easy" coming? :)
Did they just shift from a major a minor on the last progression jeez can't get over it
It's not that I couldn't hear him, it's just that the blend of the parts seemed a bit (and I mean just a little) off due to the unbalance. He has a very lovely voice that I would have enjoyed having at a louder volume. Just a choir nerd thing...my directors always focused on vocal balance amongst the parts. Anyone else find it appropriate that Eric is singing this? Eric? Get it? :D
Not to knock on Chris and Jonny, but the best open 5th I have ever heard is Keepsake's open 5th on the Somewhere Tag...
youtube(dot)com/watch?v=ObX608Tw-9A
The open 5th in question is around 1:40... It is gravity defying...
I heard of them before I heard a lot of their songs this one is my big time favorite XD
oh my god. I love phantom of the opera and always have done from a young age and music of the night is my ultimate favourite song of all time. this is one of the best perfeormances of music of the night :,) absolutely stunning!
Lol. The tune is taken from past the point of no return at the beginning. Very good version still.
you guys are awesome as always, but this song just does not work in a barbershop setting. Sorry. I'd think about taking this one out of the playlist.
Yeah I've been singing barbershop for about 10 years now lol
You really think so? I think it's beautiful. It's a really intriguing, well-crafted and well-performed interpretation, in my opinion. They did a great job of reinventing it while keeping the same beautiful, gentle quality of it. I love it!
Nothing can beat a great tenor or bass :)
They just happen to have both :)
Of all things Musical, Vocals have always been my Fav.. and THIS!! WoW!! Amazing! Brings it all from deep down! Please keep it going Gentlemen!!
Beautiful much?

I cannot stop watching this. so beautiful
funny... I think I just said that about your version of "Believe"
I've always loved the ending of this song. The madness of the Phantom is revealed in those last few chord progressions. So dissonant, it shouldn't work, but it does.
Very good but the recording doesn't do you justice. Would love to hear your studio recordings.
I think it would have been better to start it at piano, not fuckin fortissimo
David Wright's arrangements (even gems back from 1989 like this one) never cease to amaze! Brilliant performance by the VS per usual:)
This is music how it was meant to be done, plain and simple. 10/10 freakin unbelievable.

stunning and beautiful. grabs your emotions with the most warm and tender chords and the tag, well fantastic!
earsbumps?
Simply sublime. If you're ever in Ireland, I'll be in that audience.
Words fail me.This is so magical.
You obviously have never seen the musical.
Uunnnnfff. Gets me every time. Make this available on Amazon MP3
Where can I find the arrangemnt for this?
Walter White is in a quartet!? Damn you're a meth cooker AND have time to sing in your spare time? Bad ass.
But you guys are awesome!

Does anyone have this as sheet music
shop.barbershop.org/sheet-music/downloadable/music-of-the-night-en-2/

"WOOOOOOOO-" at the end was perfect
I don't know for sure... But my guess would be that they're the medallions from when they won the International quartet championship.
I actually have, numerous times. I was a bit drunk when i left said comment but I'm an idiot normally. I had to rewatch the scene before i started hating myself.

He composed it. David Wright arranged it.
Where can I get the score for this?!?!?!
These guys were the featured group at a barbershop camp I went to, really cool, the tenor, Tim Waurick does his own barbershop songs in the studio, with him singing every part. Every. Part.
Met Eric and Tim, got to chill with them and go swimming with em. They're super chill and really fun to harmonize with!
Why do no one have any problems with the bass's horribly collapsed pallet and horizontal vowels?! Don't get me wrong the arrangement is nice, but the bass ruins it.

Jennifer Pitt Thomas Crew
Absolutely what Jennifer said. It's all about the ring, and Chris Hallam has it in excess.
I thought it was Andrew Lloyed Weber
WOW!!! Talking about chills going up my spine .... some of those augmented chords are just awesome!!!
my god....my quartet just mastered go the distance..and i stumble upon this treasure?! REHEARSEL BOYS!!!!
Wonderful , so good that I cried tears of joy. One of my favorite songs. Thank You: Steve
Really nice :) Just couldn't hear the melody at times, the harmony parts were a bit too loud :(
Print!
Those overtones, tho
wow ... I love it
and Carlotta, Firmin and Andre.
