My Mom always says "You're too sensitive, stop worrying about _____________." I can also feel when I get overstimulated, and at that point, I am easily frustrated and just feel spent. I need quiet time to myself, that's how I recharge. I learned some valuable things here, thank you, Vera!
Recently I discovered I'm an HSP. Knowing that there's nothing wrong with me and there are others out there like me removed many years of self hatred, anxiety and depression. Sometimes we think we know who we are, what we are, and why we do things...until we take a second more detailed look at ourselves. Then the realization hits that it is time to dig deeper. Being highly sensitive doesn't mean that anything is wrong with you. It just makes you a little different as a person...unique is more like it. I also agree that being highly sensitive is also not a super power by any means, but it is uniquely you. Don't be ashamed if you have it. Embrace it with love.
Anything that involves cruelty, I’m a 10+. I find it so difficult to free my mind from those kinds of images or comments. Of coarse I try to avoid a lot of those types of things but I also want to fix them which requires knowledge about what is often happening in the world. I really relate to feeling overwhelmed in social situations and can feel exhausted if I do too much of that. I’m glad there are more people like me out there because it can make me feel like I’m very different than everyone else. On the Myers Briggs rating I’m an INFJ which I suspect is often the case for many HSPs. 💜
Yes I can relate, it's a constant thing to find balance between being educated, and getting haunted by images or information of cruelty and injustice. I just try to do my best not to support those things as much as possible, and let the horrible images be. Take good care! I'm an ENFJ on Myers Briggs BTW 😊
A full 10 here! My father was also a highly sensitive person. Many people do not understand even when I attempt to explain it to them. I am quite introverted and comfortable with it now.
I am a hsp..i recently found it out..i m suffering with anxiety disorder, fibromyalgia and ibs..more than 15yrs...very sensitive natured and very sensitive body too..what u said about sensitive person in previous videos are very true.

Thank you for this video. I am INTJ and HSP and an adaptive perfectionist, also a planner. It took me a very long time to realise that I am normal and that this was their problem and it was their way to put me down; the fact they were intimidated was not my fault. It's good to know that there are many of us out there surviving in this extrovert, hard, insensitive world.

I just want to tell you I’m an Enfp and also a highly sensitive person! It’s hard for me too. Many people can be insensitive even friends and family when I tried explaining this to them
Oh. My. Goodness. I am a huge extrovert and extremely confident, so when I heard the term for the first time, HSP, I thought there was no way I was one myself, I just thought it sounded familiar and wanted to know more. I just went and watched your video from last year and... I AM A HSP!! No one should confuse high sensitivity with meekness or shyness - and those are not negative traits either - but I would suspect that so many people don't even realize that they are HSP!
I read a blog page about hsp once and I thought I was reading about myself. I kept saying, yup, yes, as I was reading and by the end, I realised that I have been like this for most of my life. That's one reason why I've been trying to work towards a more minimalist lifestyle (with a family... which brings it's own challenges) but I've noticed that having less clutter or a calmer atmosphere really helps.
I wish I'd known during my 30 40 when it started to be more apparant. I was always made to feel like I was sick. Talk about crazy when I look at those people and think 'what about their way. No empathy..rude..self centred busy doing bs..gossip..while there are so many positives in my personality. I was a misfit in my family for being hsp. Erin. I notice my cats always rest in visually calming direction..they like a clean tidy space. I recently am turning my life around to support true self and self love..and am tackling my environment bit by bit to declutter and make it visually calming..thanks for your comment..nice to see how personal recognition happens to others too.

I've known I'm an HSP for many years but am always learning. Just this past week, the very loud fire alarm went off at work. No fire, another issue, all was well, but it went off for almost two hours. I did my work. People actually said to me that I was "exuding calm," and I laughed inside because I knew I would have to recover later. But of course I was exuding calm: the sensory overload was unusual for them, but it's an almost daily experience for me! I'm well-practiced in coping with that overestimated feeling. Sometimes that daily practice is our superpower, in an odd way.
I‘m probably an 8, while my husband is a 9 or 10. Depending on situations. For example I like watching sad movies and have a good cry, while hubby really never wants to watch something that brings him down and keeps him up at night...😅 But it really helps having a partner that experiences the world in the same way! Our lifestyle matches our sensitive pace.

Being hsp is the cause of much of my difficulty. Mainly due to the fact I was marginalized as a small child being told to stop being so sensitive and "real men don't cry" I became a self hating person, hated crying, even though I do cry a lot, hate feeling other people feelings of disappointment. Exposed to violence, abuse, and degradation. Now Im not blaming being hsp from my issues. But it does exacerbate my existing ptsd. I do need to heal from the damage then my hsp superpowers (yup I call em super powers) can begin to blossom.

The family and culture I spent most of my time literally attack at any sign of 'weakness' ofcourse..their senses matter but mine did not. Hello Vera 🌸 Love your channel x I’ve only recently discovered that I am an HSP after receiving counselling to come to terms with a chronic illness. Unfortunately I grew up with a narcissistic father, and being highly sensitive, this has obviously had a huge impact on me . I am in a great place now though as I understand myself so much better. I study Carol Tuttle' s teachings ( Dressing Your Truth/ The Chld Whisperer) and in regard to that, a Type 2 energy profiling person would fit into this category. Believe it or not, your face profile can also confirm this. Your face seems to confirm her teachings too!😊You are correct in embracing yourself and living true to your energy. We need to love ourselves and stay true to who we are.
Im often told im “too sensitive”, “your too emotional” and “your looking to deeply into it” and I always find this so frustrating because I can’t control this but the way people say its they make it sound easy and something I should do. I know im a HSB now but I still feel reluctant to explain that to people because I feel they’ll dismiss it as an excuse... 😞
Unfortunately..most people don't accept this and most see the negatives of it. I would recommend only sharing with one trusted individual at first until you get really knowledgeable on it. And learn to manage it. Without having to explain your actions. You can be more vague and general to others if they question why you do something..like having a toolkit bag (water. Tissues..snack..etc.) or how you spend down time. I became isolated due to being treated like somethings wrong with me. But I always knew and saw that with this HSP..are very unique wonderful human traits..which those who dismiss me do not have ...so I held that in my heart. Now at 48 I am building my life from this great empowring awareness. I hope I can finally guard my energy enough to do things my own way..so I can really enjoy life. I have always been unsure if I was a hsp because I didn’t think noises or lighting particularly affected me... but this video got me thinking again and I notice that I move my noise cancelling headphones off one ear if I hear anything going on! And also I sneeze when I look at the sun and get bad headaches if I’m out with friends too long 😛 on the plus side I’m a artist! I notice the details that most people would be oblivious to and I love that!

Many of the traits of HSP sound a lot like a person with PTSD...a video on the difference between these two would be helpful. My concern is that many people will think they are a HSP but hey are actually suffering from undiagnosed PTSD.
I dunno I feel like maybe they are HSP and not PTSD. She said in the video HSPs try to explain themselves and people don’t quite understand. And I feel that’s the case here. What if they don’t have PTSD what if they are just and HSP and can peep sht from a mile away lol? Just wondering
Your concern makes sense. The DOES acronym helps describe HSP qualities: Depth of processing (takes in information and spends more time thinking about it so is more deliberate), Overstimulated (easily stimulated by ALL overwhelming stimuli not just certain stimuli related to traumatic event, like with PTSD), Empathetic (easily affected by moods and suffering of others), Sensitive to Subtleties (notices subtle changes or details in environments). I'm not an expert but imagine that PTSD has more symptoms that HSP doesn't necessarily have such as nightmares or reliving the trauma. Hopefully this helps differentiate them.

I once got so over-stimulated that I got an anxiety attack, it was one of the weirdest days.. I remember going crazy about sounds (they were not even that loud but I couldnt handle hearing anything, I just craved absolute silence) and light.. so I sat in the dark.. Did anyone ever have such an expierience?
Thanks for sharing your story, so sorry you had this experience. I actually had a similar experience. I think it's important to take care of ourselves in such a way that things don't build up to this point. Also, it's never a bad idea to get some help and talk to someone about hacing had a panick attack, especially if it happens more often. An outside perspective can help a lot. Take care!
I tried telling this to one of my friend and he said so now that you know that what you want to do about it, i sensed he is realating this as some kind of illness and i conveyed the message wrongly. If if i tried to give my examples like how i reacted in the past that he remembers that convinced what am i talking about but i still am feeling bad that it doesn't had the effect that i wanted.

Now that I think about my upbringing with insensitive Smoking Parents who neglected themselves constantly and I use to cry almost every day a week for years... they fed me overstimulating foods, too much tv and screen time (1994, first gaming console, 1996 we got our first computer , I was 6 in 1996) Dad would sit infront of the TV every single night eyes glued to the TV, mouth glued to a Cigar or junk food and Coffee, after dinner... I also had severe eczema and used Steroids all my life until I became a parent myself. I know myself well enough I prefer a white room with nothing in it and silence... but I have 3 young children who scream and demand all the time... as much as I love them, I always wish I could be a better mother because I cant handle their dependency on me. I cant even handle myself. I have to reset for 3 hours a day in a forest, alone. If I dont, I can't cope.
Or sat we are r too fragile. It is frustrating. Im not fragike I am strong. I m sweet ad kind! I can be counted oe. I just don't know.. It is frustrating. .
Ppl around me don't really want to understand HSP concept. Everytime I try to explain my situation, they become defensive as if m labelling them as insensitive. Ppl just wanna use my intuition to their benefit and never let me go without realising how I feel. Someone actually offered me money to guide him intuitively in business decisions which is so insensitive, hurtful and disrespectful
From my experience most of the people don’t get it anyway, so it has no sense to talk about it very often. I feel like people wouldn’t understand why I’m talking about this, in worse case they would think that I’m just making excuses.
How happy I am that I've stumbled upon your account! I had no idea HSP was so interesting to me. After I've seen this video HSP sounds more like a very high developed awareness of the inner and outer world to me compared to those who don't have it. I don't have it. Asking this from a writer in spe perspective; does HSP differ between man and woman in the influence on personality? I'm asking because one of the major differences between man and woman is that women can do multiple things at the same time because they have a better connection between the left and right part of their brains. In conjunction with HSP, does this mean that having HSP while being a woman is more 'beneficial' or easier to handle as a woman because experiencing everything more intense and simultaneously (HSP) in conjunction with multitasking (woman) makes for a 'better' combination than if a man would have it? One of my characters has a high level of empathy towards others, and maybe gifting her HSP as the reason for this (also making it nature instead of nurture) will deepen her character even more. @ Simple Happy Zen: since HSP clearly has an effect on one's entire life and worldview, is having HSP (partly) the reason why you live a minimalistic lifestyle (as in having less stimulance) and why you are veganist (as in having high empathy/love/respect for animals)? I'm asking because one's personality influences everything from their perspective.
Hey there! Thanks for your questions! Actually, HSP is not something you have, but something you are. If you say that someone has HSP, it sounds like an illness or a syndrom, which it is not :) So that's important. For me, I think being a highly sensitive person does contribute to me being drawn to minimalism, spirituality and veganism. But with veganism I think it doesn't have to be that. Because the animal agriculture is contibuting to the destruction of our planet and the suffering of countless innocent lives, I think anyone who truly understands this will at least try to go vegan. Or at least that's what I'm hoping.
@@SimpleHappyZen That sounds logical yes, you are HSP instead of having it. Seemingly we have things in common then, I like minimalism (haven't gotten rid of too much yet), but from a whole different origin. I'm not veganistic but vegetarian since a couple of years. It was much easier to drop the meat than I thought it was. Until that moment I was completely drained at the gym when my reserves were down, but that quickly re-levelled. But you've forgotten to answer my question: does HSP differ between man and woman in the influence on personality?
I don't think it differs because of HSP, because it means that our nervous system is more sensitive to stimuli, so that has the same effect on men as on women. But there are all kinds of different personality types between HSPs. They say that men and women are equal 50/50, and also 30% of HSPs are extraverted. If you want to know more about it as research for your book, I suggest checking out the book The highly sensitive person by Dr. Elaine Aron. She has lots and lots of information
@@SimpleHappyZen Thanks! I see now I was looking at it from a different angle; HSP is inborn and based on the nervous system, thus apart from gender. I think I was too focussed on behaviour here and was combining things while I wasn't even knowledgeable enough on the subject to begin with. But thanks again! If that one character indeed will play her role in the story better while being HSP (as the importance of the role defines how deep I want my research to go) then I'll see if I can get my hands on that book if it is available in my country. If not, I'll just learn more as I go from watching your videos.

I will try to get hold of the book you recommend, and I’ve recently started a mindfulness course which I’m hoping will help with my anxiety. I think a big part of my problem is that I seem to be an empath and I tend to pick up on how others feel. I was in a coffee shop the other day when a young couple on a nearby table were breaking up, the girl was sobbing and to my horror I started to cry too so I had to go out. Ads on the tv raising money for children in war torn countries and for animals that have been abused reduce me to tears as well, the list is endless tbh, that’s why I’m hoping mindfulness will help me to be able to switch off from it all. 💐
I totally understand. I am the same way, and I also think I'm an empath. It can be very challenging sometimes, it hardly takes anything to reduce me to a crying sobbing mess haha. Luckily I've found ways to deal with it better. And also just accepted that this is the way that I am. I think it's great you started a mindfulness course. Mindfulness meditation helps me with so much, I really think it's incredible beneficial and mindfulness is a big source of happiness. I think during your course, you will also learn not how to switch it off, but how to be less 'engaged' with your emotions. They might not disappear, but you will practice watching them from an outside perspective. Like being an observer of what's going on with your body, mind and emotions, without judging that as good or bad, or wanted or unwanted. This way, instead of letting them take you away, like swimming in a strong current in a river, but sitting besides the river, watching the current (of emotions) flow by. You know what I mean. :) That helps me a lot. I recently saw two videos from Frank James about being an empath that I enjoyed. You explained it as if HSP somehow hear or see more than other people. I don't believe it is actually that way. You don't perceive more, just your brain processes it in another way.
I don’t know. As I got older I began to realize that other people didn’t see/hear/taste/feel(tactile) some of the things that I did. Certainly not in the super-power sense, but in the overwhelming sense. “How can you like food with no flavor!?”, when I can taste a myriad of complex flavor in ‘bland’ food and am overwhelmed with strong flavors others adore, etc…

Exposed to violence, abuse, and degradation. Now Im not blaming being hsp from my issues. But it does exacerbate my existing ptsd. I do need to heal from the damage then my hsp superpowers (yup I call em super powers) can begin to blossom.

Unfortunately I grew up with a narcissistic father, and being highly sensitive, this has obviously had a huge impact on me . I am in a great place now though as I understand myself so much better. I study Carol Tuttle' s teachings ( Dressing Your Truth/ The Chld Whisperer) and in regard to that, a Type 2 energy profiling person would fit into this category. Believe it or not, your face profile can also confirm this. Your face seems to confirm her teachings too!😊You are correct in embracing yourself and living true to your energy. We need to love ourselves and stay true to who we are.
Im often told im “too sensitive”, “your too emotional” and “your looking to deeply into it” and I always find this so frustrating because I can’t control this but the way people say its they make it sound easy and something I should do. I know im a HSB now but I still feel reluctant to explain that to people because I feel they’ll dismiss it as an excuse... 😞
Unfortunately..most people don't accept this and most see the negatives of it. I would recommend only sharing with one trusted individual at first until you get really knowledgeable on it. And learn to manage it. Without having to explain your actions. You can be more vague and general to others if they question why you do something..like having a toolkit bag (water. Tissues..snack..etc.) or how you spend down time. I became isolated due to being treated like somethings wrong with me. But I always knew and saw that with this HSP..are very unique wonderful human traits..which those who dismiss me do not have ...so I held that in my heart. Now at 48 I am building my life from this great empowring awareness. I hope I can finally guard my energy enough to do things my own way..so I can really enjoy life. I have always been unsure if I was a hsp because I didn’t think noises or lighting particularly affected me... but this video got me thinking again and I notice that I move my noise cancelling headphones off one ear if I hear anything going on! And also I sneeze when I look at the sun and get bad headaches if I’m out with friends too long 😛 on the plus side I’m a artist! I notice the details that most people would be oblivious to and I love that!

Many of the traits of HSP sound a lot like a person with PTSD...a video on the difference between these two would be helpful. My concern is that many people will think they are a HSP but hey are actually suffering from undiagnosed PTSD.
I dunno I feel like maybe they are HSP and not PTSD. She said in the video HSPs try to explain themselves and people don’t quite understand. And I feel that’s the case here. What if they don’t have PTSD what if they are just and HSP and can peep sht from a mile away lol? Just wondering
Your concern makes sense. The DOES acronym helps describe HSP qualities: Depth of processing (takes in information and spends more time thinking about it so is more deliberate), Overstimulated (easily stimulated by ALL overwhelming stimuli not just certain stimuli related to traumatic event, like with PTSD), Empathetic (easily affected by moods and suffering of others), Sensitive to Subtleties (notices subtle changes or details in environments). I'm not an expert but imagine that PTSD has more symptoms that HSP doesn't necessarily have such as nightmares or reliving the trauma. Hopefully this helps differentiate them.

im 12 and i think im a hsp? growing up i was called sensetive and shy (ofc im alot more bold and charismatic now)
I once got so over-stimulated that I got an anxiety attack, it was one of the weirdest days.. I remember going crazy about sounds (they were not even that loud but I couldnt handle hearing anything, I just craved absolute silence) and light.. so I sat in the dark.. Did anyone ever have such an expierience?
Thanks for sharing your story, so sorry you had this experience. I actually had a similar experience. I think it's important to take care of ourselves in such a way that things don't build up to this point. Also, it's never a bad idea to get some help and talk to someone about hacing had a panick attack, especially if it happens more often. An outside perspective can help a lot. Take care!

I tried telling this to one of my friend and he said so now that you know that what you want to do about it, i sensed he is realating this as some kind of illness and i conveyed the message wrongly. If if i tried to give my examples like how i reacted in the past that he remembers that convinced what am i talking about but i still am feeling bad that it doesn't had the effect that i wanted.

Now that I think about my upbringing with insensitive Smoking Parents who neglected themselves constantly and I use to cry almost every day a week for years... they fed me overstimulating foods, too much tv and screen time (1994, first gaming console, 1996 we got our first computer , I was 6 in 1996) Dad would sit infront of the TV every single night eyes glued to the TV, mouth glued to a Cigar or junk food and Coffee, after dinner... I also had severe eczema and used Steroids all my life until I became a parent myself. I know myself well enough I prefer a white room with nothing in it and silence... but I have 3 young children who scream and demand all the time... as much as I love them, I always wish I could be a better mother because I cant handle their dependency on me. I cant even handle myself. I have to reset for 3 hours a day in a forest, alone. If I dont, I can't cope.
Or sat we are r too fragile. It is frustrating. Im not fragike I am strong. I m sweet ad kind! I can be counted oe. I just don't know.. It is frustrating.

Ppl around me don't really want to understand HSP concept. Everytime I try to explain my situation, they become defensive as if m labelling them as insensitive. Ppl just wanna use my intuition to their benefit and never let me go without realising how I feel. Someone actually offered me money to guide him intuitively in business decisions which is so insensitive, hurtful and disrespectful

How happy I am that I've stumbled upon your account! I had no idea HSP was so interesting to me.
After I've seen this video HSP sounds more like a very high developed awareness of the inner and outer world to me compared to those who don't have it. I don't have it.
Asking this from a writer in spe perspective; does HSP differ between man and woman in the influence on personality? I'm asking because one of the major differences between man and woman is that women can do multiple things at the same time because they have a better connection between the left and right part of their brains. In conjunction with HSP, does this mean that having HSP while being a woman is more 'beneficial' or easier to handle as a woman because experiencing everything more intense and simultaneously (HSP) in conjunction with multitasking (woman) makes for a 'better' combination than if a man would have it?
One of my characters has a high level of empathy towards others, and maybe gifting her HSP as the reason for this (also making it nature instead of nurture) will deepen her character even more.
@ Simple Happy Zen: since HSP clearly has an effect on one's entire life and worldview, is having HSP (partly) the reason why you live a minimalistic lifestyle (as in having less stimulance) and why you are veganist (as in having high empathy/love/respect for animals)? I'm asking because one's personality influences everything from their perspective.
Hey there! Thanks for your questions! Actually, HSP is not something you have, but something you are. If you say that someone has HSP, it sounds like an illness or a syndrom, which it is not :) So that's important. For me, I think being a highly sensitive person does contribute to me being drawn to minimalism, spirituality and veganism. But with veganism I think it doesn't have to be that. Because the animal agriculture is contibuting to the destruction of our planet and the suffering of countless innocent lives, I think anyone who truly understands this will at least try to go vegan. Or at least that's what I'm hoping.

Seemingly we have things in common then, I like minimalism (haven't gotten rid of too much yet), but from a whole different origin.
I'm not veganistic but vegetarian since a couple of years. It was much easier to drop the meat than I thought it was. Until that moment I was completely drained at the gym when my reserves were down, but that quickly re-levelled.

I don't think it differs because of HSP, because it means that our nervous system is more sensitive to stimuli, so that has the same effect on men as on women. But there are all kinds of different personality types between HSPs. They say that men and women are equal 50/50, and also 30% of HSPs are extraverted. If you want to know more about it as research for your book, I suggest checking out the book The highly sensitive person by Dr. Elaine Aron. She has lots and lots of information
@@SimpleHappyZen Thanks! I see now I was looking at it from a different angle; HSP is inborn and based on the nervous system, thus apart from gender. I think I was too focussed on behaviour here and was combining things while I wasn't even knowledgeable enough on the subject to begin with.
But thanks again! If that one character indeed will play her role in the story better while being HSP (as the importance of the role defines how deep I want my research to go) then I'll see if I can get my hands on that book if it is available in my country.
If not, I'll just learn more as I go from watching your videos.

I will try to get hold of the book you recommend, and I’ve recently started a mindfulness course which I’m hoping will help with my anxiety. I think a big part of my problem is that I seem to be an empath and I tend to pick up on how others feel. I was in a coffee shop the other day when a young couple on a nearby table were breaking up, the girl was sobbing and to my horror I started to cry too so I had to go out. Ads on the tv raising money for children in war torn countries and for animals that have been abused reduce me to tears as well, the list is endless tbh, that’s why I’m hoping mindfulness will help me to be able to switch off from it all. 💐
I totally understand. I am the same way, and I also think I'm an empath. It can be very challenging sometimes, it hardly takes anything to reduce me to a crying sobbing mess haha. Luckily I've found ways to deal with it better. And also just accepted that this is the way that I am. I think it's great you started a mindfulness course. Mindfulness meditation helps me with so much, I really think it's incredible beneficial and mindfulness is a big source of happiness. I think during your course, you will also learn not how to switch it off, but how to be less 'engaged' with your emotions. They might not disappear, but you will practice watching them from an outside perspective. Like being an observer of what's going on with your body, mind and emotions, without judging that as good or bad, or wanted or unwanted. This way, instead of letting them take you away, like swimming in a strong current in a river, but sitting besides the river, watching the current (of emotions) flow by. You know what I mean. :) That helps me a lot. I recently saw two videos from Frank James about being an empath that I enjoyed. You explained it as if HSP somehow hear or see more than other people. I don't believe it is actually that way. You don't perceive more, just your brain processes it in another way.
I don’t know. As I got older I began to realize that other people didn’t see/hear/taste/feel(tactile) some of the things that I did. Certainly not in the super-power sense, but in the overwhelming sense. “How can you like food with no flavor!?”, when I can taste a myriad of complex flavor in ‘bland’ food and am overwhelmed with strong flavors others adore, etc…
