I was one of the few 8 year olds who memorized every word to Heres to the Crabgrass. I just today ordered your book. I shall happily send a few comments your way, when I finish. Thanks again for posting.
His was the first concert I ever saw, at Freedomland. I was 3. And this song was obviously written when the Bx. was not known for its troubles. I would have written it with a different take. Thanks.
Mark: The musicians in that photo are Skeets Herfurt on the clarinet (who played and recorded with Tommy Dorsey, Vaughn Monroe and many other including playing on The Lawrence Welk show from the late 70's until 1982). Next to him is clarinetist Abe Most who played with Les Brown and recorded many tributes to Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw.
Haha! Love this! "You'll Never Walk Alone" is one of my favorite non-Allan Sherman songs ... so how can you not love this. Brilliant. The story is the same as "Get on the Garden Freeway" (except different directions). He was such an amazing parodist and performer. I'm gonna have to come back to your channel and see the rest of these unreleased recordings you have. And read your book. Fabulous! But right now I'm s'posed to be making a ukulele cover of "You Went the Wrong Way, Old King Louie for Bastille Day and this week's Seasons of the Ukulele theme, "war". This will be my fourth Allan Sherman cover. Because I simply cannot help myself. But, honestly ... war theme on Bastille Day ... how could you not?!
I remember an episode of "Cheers" which ended with Carla leaving as everyone sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" to her...how would Carla have reacted to Allan's parody? :D
As much as Allan Sherman loved food, I'm surprised he didn't come up with something like this: When you go to be wed Wed a stir-fry guy Who likes Chinese food ev'ry day Give him bamboo shoots Water CHESTnuts piled high And rice from your lunch yesterday Add CHICKen to taste Let the greens not go waste Add shiitake for sizzle and tone Fry on, fry on With your fry-guy along And you'll never WOK alone You'll NEVer WOK alone Fry on, fry on With your fry-guy along And you'll never WOK alone You'll NEVer WOK alone "You'll Never Wok Alone" lyrics Copyright 2022 Joseph M. I believe go-Thoreau is among both his cleverest lines and his best rhymes. He was talking about the big move to Suburban living that was taking place at the time. At the end, he says enough, lets move back to the city, "where life is gay and witty, back to the noise there, that everyone enjoys there, back to the rat race, dont forget your brief case, back in the groove there, say why dont we move there away from all of this sweet simplic i ty." Of course, only a few years later, many do.
Sorry for the super long delay in replying. I'm juggling more social media than I can manage. Very glad you like the TH-cam videos and thanks so much for coming to the Skirball!
Mommy is from Headaches, not Crabgrass. Crabgrass presciently predicts the move from suburbia to the city. It is based on an old English Ditty, called and this is what made Sherman so great, Country Garden.

Al, Al, you were a real phenomenon! Love this, and though I've got most all his records, I'd never heard it. Thanks!

I love this one -- never heard it before. Thanks, Mark. I just bought your book today, and I can't wait to start reading it tonight.
Love it

A colleague of mine was at that concert, too!
He was such a brilliant and funny man. We could use him about now.
Thanks! This is great fun. I very much enjoyed your talk at the Skirball in Los Angeles!
So psyched to read your book. A riot to be sure, even if it's sad...
laughed out loud! thank you Mark Cohen!

" ... continue to the third stop light. Then turn around and go right back because I won't. Be. Home. To. NIght!" :)
There are sad parts, but I'm happy to report that people seem to think it's okay. Love to hear your thoughts.
Best,
Mark
Sounds great, thank you. I love "Crabgrass." Especially, "Mommy! Can't you keep Daddy's car out of the driveway?"
Hah!

Thank you, and apologies for the unforgivably long delay.
Nobody had heard these. Never released. Will try from here on in to reply much more promptly. Apologies
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The actual name of the original song is "You'll Never Walk Alone".
Mark, you RULE! Allen Sherman is Yahweh, there is NO doubt about it! :)
soapbxprod Yahweh? Not quite....

Of course. I get it right in the book, at least. "Come let us go there/Live like Thoreau there."
No, never sold. Sherman sang his parody at a live concert that I found a recording of.
You are very welcome!
Amazing info. Tell me more about you. And I hope you get a chance to ready my biography of Sherman. Very curious to hear what you think.
Heh. Nice intro, Mark. :o)
so did you change your name from sol? (THE REFERENCES ARE REAL!)
I think it's interesting that this is the same gag he uses in "Get on the Garden Freeway." Does this predate his Cohan parodies?
Haha, i just saw this. I made the same comment! He must have had a lot of unwanted visitors. 😊
Yes, you're right. Sorry 'bout that.
You're welcome
hahahahahaha! thank you
Is he singing, "Walk on" or "Walk, Kahn, walk, Kahn..."
