"When You Walk Through the Bronx" by Allan Sherman
I remember his soothing voice. He was great!
I once saw Allan Sherman on TV with Steve Allen, and they were making up songs on the spot based on whatever ideas came from the audience. Some young women gave as her topic “Eve Jackabowski.” Sherman is singing “Eve Jackabowski” over and over, muttering “What the Hell rhymes with Eve Jackabowski?” He suddenly snaps his fingers and says “Got it!” And immediately sings “Eve Jackabowski, lend me your house key, Please, I want to come in.” This man was a genius.
The thing is, I went from listening to Allan Sherman albums in my living room, to hearing my first Weird Al Yankovic song in only about three years. It took at least five more years before I felt Al was better than Allan.
Can't remember exactly how we got them - My Son The Folk Singer & My Son The Celebrity became a go to for me to occupy my time and do something fun from time to time. Back when having a turn table was a common thing.
I had his greatest hits CD as a kid- love him.
My 2nd favorite A Sherman song. Extremely clever. Of course Extremely funny too
How wonderful! His slight alteration of the melody is so charming.
Thank for keeping Allan Sherman talent and memory alive . I sure miss him
The guy had a great voice! The piano accompanist was great, too. Wonderful timing between both of them. Thanks to Mark Cohen for sharing this song with us!
Thank you, Mark Cohen for keeping all of this alive and well.
Just thought of this song because of the new couple across the street. Why? Because I’ll never forget my high school homeroom teacher used to play it in ‘68. Now I know why 😅!
😂 love it
I'm not overweight anymore - thanks to type 2 diabetes. Not a course I'd recommend to lose weight 😢
OMG! I haven't heard this in eons! Funny! Funny! Funny! Back in the day this is one of his songs I tried to memorize, but could never get all the Jewish names straight. I still have his LP albums - all of them I think.
Yep. I love this song.
This guy was gold.
Timeless. Enjoy!
Have all the albums. We listened to them nonstop in Miami and when we visited all of our cousins in Brooklyn, and I still can never get enough. now my daughter adores Allan Sherman as well.
My folks had all of his albums which we 6 kids played on the Hi-Fi! It's almost 60 years later and I can still sing all of the songs!❤
Sing it Allen good song for the holidays.
This is still funny. My Mom had all of his albums. Great memories 40 years later (50+ actually). What a Mensch. You too!
Glad you enjoyed it
I love this guy as a kid he kept me laughing for many many many many many many many many many many years
I am of Finnish/Irish dissent! I LOVE ALL of Allan Sherman's works! CLASSIC HUMOR!
9/2023.....I remember this tune from when I was 10 in 1963. Grew up Jewish in Cleveland, Ohio. Back then, I knew all the lyrics by heart, we also had an album by Myron Cohen. Yiddish was spoken in our house, so me and my sister knew there were things our parents didn't want us to know. It is sometimes referred to as YINGLISH, a cross between English & Yiddish, and by inference we could figure out what they were saying. I still go on line, to refresh my memory of the Yiddish words. I'm not religious and I married a Christian. We don't practice any religion, however, I love picking out our Christmas tree, and decorating it.
crumbled, like a piece halvah LOL
This great parody, that was taken from the original great song "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". shows that he was a master of parodies. and how great Allen Sherman was for sure. however I could be a little biased because of my namesake.
Allen Sherman was fantastic, he did a lot of parodies from all different kinds of music genres. such children's nursery rhymes, popular songs of the time in the early sixties. even older songs from the Country of the United States. such "Glory Glory Harry Lewis". he was a master of song parodies. he had problems with his weight all of his life. which eventually lead to his death at young age. if I remember rightly just before his fiftieth birthday. when was a kid my father had his album "My Son the Celebrity" along with album's by Harry Belafonte, and Ray Conif. that was over fifty years ago.
This was Allan's Masterwork.
Steve Allen on right
Love it
👌👍👍😎🤣🤣🤣🤪🤪
Nice plug from the boys! Excellent book. Reveals how the funny people who entertain us often live in misery.

So funny.
For those of us who are younger and/or fashion-unconscious... who or what was Irving Roth? Something in the fabrics line, I gather, but my search engine keeps turning up references to someone who doesn't seem connected to this story.
😂
Wife: I am too fat, tomorrow I join WW!!!! Husband: I don’t know you!!!!!
And not to forget the superb background singers.✨
I always wondered what the original song being parodied was! Thanks!
Kinda makes the most famous song in the whole movie a joke out of the whole "Pay no attention to the man behind the Iron Curtain!!" the least intimidating thing said in the 2016-2020 portion of the movie, doesn't it?
If you listen closely at about 1:38 you can hear someone falling out of their chair
Mark Cohen, thank you for The Book! Comedy is not easy, nor was Allen Sherman 😊
To the tune of The Irish Jaunting Car.
Parody of Folk song
He actually sang quite well considering it’s a parody. His vocals are good and he didn’t miss a note.
I never had a Jewish grandfather who would offer me a "piece halvah", but just remembering my friends who did, doubled-over and howling at this lyric brings back sweet memories of the 60's. Absolutely EVERYBODY had these records- Jew, gentile, what have you. Were we more innocent then? Less innocent? Smarter? Protected from our own individual prejudices? I don't have the answer, but we've certainly not gotten better as a society. This humor is gentle, loving, and ethnically centered. Would it ever fly today? And if not, what does that say about what progress we've made as humans? I'm not feeling like we're doing any better.
The original Weird Al
My younger brothers and I would listen to this classic album, along with My Son the Nut and My Son the Celebrity, on our parents' Zenith HiFi LP player. We memorized a few, including this one. He was a comic genius, who died too young. Thank you for posting this.
Even at 10 years old, when I first heard that "Drapes of Roth" pun, it destroyed me. (The stops you hear on the floor, BTW, are Jack Benny falling apart.)
❤
I was 9 years old the first time I heard Mr. Sherman. It was Hello mother, hello father. I thought he was such fun.
