    Sorry for the late comment Lau , just got back from France , ran out off roaming data , great video as per , I really do like the look of the mountain tree stuff , I’ve got 40ppm straight out of the tap , and my nitrates were always very high untill I added the shower , now even though I trickle in twice a day , with the shower running, my nitrates are 2 ppm so I well happy with that
    Thank you so much for promoting the charity build , come on every one let’s make this happen , take care my friend 👍👍😀😀

      Yeah I don't know why the shower has never really done a proper job. In saying that, there are only 2 tiers. 3 would be much better.
      40 is enormous out of the tap. Max I have had was 30. It goes up and down.

      Hi, thank you. I absolutely love multibays because I can work with media. The Nexus are amazing, the best in my eyes, but I feel there is always an element of the nitrogen cycle that is missing as it's plastic with plastic. but in saying that, if you have a shower, then you have got that 3rd phase of nitrogen cycle.

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the Bio Motion, as I understand it, originally was designed to float and to be used in a moving bed. But after testing, it doesn't float and I would be concerned to use it in a moving bed as the fast agitation could cause the balls to disintegrate. So I have placed mine in a vegetable bag in a static bed. There is some clay on it. I won't be able to say if the Bio Motion is doing an excellent job by itself as I have mixed it with other media within the same chamber.

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andy, this video is 8 months old. Following the change of media things have improved massively and I also fitted a nitrate remover at the source. There is a separate video for this. Since then, nitrate in the pond has been around 0.5 mg per litre. Which is a massive improvement since I was around 60 mg/l.

  • @peternugent1010
    @peternugent1010 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your koi look great, they don't seem to be bothered about your nitrate levels.
    There is a third group of bacteria that can help with nitrates. Anoxic bacteria can be developed in low oxygen conditions to consume nitrates. Dr Novak and Manky Sankey have lots of info on these, TH-cam and internet. I think Bakki type showers probably render them unnecessary but for low tech and low cost solutions they are a definite option to consider

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks Peter. Yes when I first built my pond I looked into anoxtic filtration as I knew it was used a lot in large aquariums but it's not a road I wanted to go down to with the pond.

    • @peternugent1010
      @peternugent1010 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection yes I agree anoxic filtration is pretty ugly, but it's really cheap and can help those koi keepers who aren't able or willing to spend that amount on higher tech systems. It's a fascinating topic.

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peternugent1010 it is indeed. I did some research about it especially as I love the bacteria topic and working with different media but anoxic filtration can bring a whole heaps of problems too. So I preferred to stick to the simple filtration for now. When I extend, I will go gravity and drum probably, as this current pond was always going to be 'temporary' due to space and other animals present.

    @kappa3228 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Biohome and lotus root are excellent media for housing aerobic bacteria and does a great job. But they do nothing to reduce the nitrate, this is from my experience. Plants and water changes are the only things that helped me reduce nitrates. From what I have seen most hobbyist couple these media with regular water change and/or nitrogen absorption by plants and believe that these media reduced the nitrates, while it's just a bias because you spend so much money on it

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Thank you for your message. The Biohome maxi ultimate has been specifically designed for anaerobic bacteria. Lotus root for both, aerobic bacteria and anaerobic. The Nitro rings too from Mountain Tree. They have in 2 weeks done a certain job reducing the readings from 30+ mg per litre to 5 to 10. And that is only a small amount of media. The water changes, you cant do more than what I am already doing, even in winter. But the problem is the tap water too... which I have now solved too. The videos get released 2 weeks in general after I filmed. I just add bits to it if I need to. I would never release a video if things were not working :-)

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike. I wouldnt put any media where the plastic media is (mechanical and bio chambers) as the Nexus work with plastic media. I am aware that there has been some long discussions between some high range media founders and EA for the Nexus. I do not know the details, but know that they have happened :-) The discussions were about the feasibility to add a chamber within the nexus in order to add high range porous media in that chamber. But it went no where, which is a shame in my opinion.
      I am aware that some people who use the nexus as PUMP FED, are using the exit chamber and add porous media inside, high ramge media. I havent got nexus so I cant really help much there.

  • @sroRAGE
    @sroRAGE 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you said why you are obsessing about the nitrate that’s exactly what I was thinking nitrate at that level is nothing to worry about I have a drum filter and and a moving bed with hel x13 and I haven’t got any problems with nitrate so I don’t think it’s anything to do with the ceramic media, also when people say they have 0 nitrite that’s not possible unless you don’t feed anything and your fish don’t produce ammonia or you are doing water changes then testing to get the 0 nitrite you always have some nitrite in your pond or you beneficial bacteria will starve, but why do you have nitrate in your tap water is beyond me.

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for commenting. I am aware that ammonia and nitrite is not completely 0. It's a liquid test so it will always read 0 as they are ranges.
      A lot of people have got nitrate at the tap, not uncommon in England.
      As I said in my video, some people never have nitrate. Some people might have other things that I haven't got. The same filtration on two different similar ponds with the same amount of fish could have two different readings.
      You are right, as I said in my diagram, low level of nitrate is not toxic, but constant high reading can be harmful. Readings between 30 to 60 (range of the liquid test) is not ideal. So I have to tackle it, which I have now successfully.

  • @edwardsdeacon
    @edwardsdeacon 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    🤔🤔🤔 Less fish, less fish food going into the system , add hardy plants 🪴 to the system and slot of them. That will (should balance out ) your nitrate issues. Maybe add a large basket ( BCB )of Special Kitty , kitty litter ( well rinsed ) to the system. The clay somehow helps the health of the fish while absorbing contaminants.

    Hi lou I think u would be so much more better off if u was to use pumice instead of alfagrog

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark, Pumice is a medium range (although I do like it - I have some in the second tier in the shower) shower media. Not effective at all submerged. Alfagrog however is the opposite. Medium range media again, but very good submerged. Alfragrog is not porous at all but is great at trapping detritus and fines. So great for mechanical filtration. It can also be used in trickling shower (no more than 6000 l per hour) showers as it helped to gas off the nitrogen gas in a shower, but not being porous, it has no benefits for anaerobic bacteria.
