Merry Xmas Lau. Definitely the way to go with an air source heat pump. We got one through Terry Wright year before last, and it's the best thing we done for the koi. We got fed up of seeing our koi motionless and sometimes on their sides. Last winter we heated to 15 degrees and it cost us £81 for the winter but this year with the high cost's of electricity we expect it to be 2 or 3 times more, especially as it's been so cold. Heating this year to 14 degrees with 25mm polycarbonate covers and koi are toastie warm and still feeding 2- 3 times a day. They are very happy. Best wishes Phil.
Spoiled fish 😊 I will definitely invest but I still want them to have a winter at 8 degrees. Last year my pond went down to 9 at the lowest, but I guess last winter was also unusually very mild. Merry Christmas to you too. See you next year!
Good to see you all made it through the cold spell . My pond got down to zero degrees on Saturday , which was scary , and the lowest its ever been . Fish seem ok , though , and temperatures are going back up , now . I agree with your heating ideas - keep it reasonable in Winter and flatten out the bumps as we come into spring . I was about to go for it 2 years ago , but then the energy costs went through the roof . Happy Christmas to everyone and all the best for 2023 ❤
Hi, ouch, that was cold then in the pond. Glad to hear the fish are ok. Temps are back up. Ambiant temp were 13 degrees here today, so that's a difference of 18 degrees in 4 days. It's crazy. Pond is sitting at 6.5 tonight and the fish are active again. The swings are recipe for disaster... Hopefully the cost of living will settle and we can invest again. I wish you a very Christmas too. Hi Lau, I was going to heat until Christmas this year, then let the pond cool down. With this cold snap I was chucking away ££££ in the end I was just using the heater to keep the pond from freezing. But still having that ability to control the environment is a god send, get that heater 😏
Yeah I will definitely get a heater. I just want to keep it at 8. Funnily enough, I was up at silly o'clock this morning and pond was back up at 6 and they are all swimming which I much prefer to see. Have a nice Christmas if you celebrate it and thank you for watching. Much appreciated

Welcome to a taste of early southern Ontario Canada winter. 🥶 🥶 🥶 Brrrrrrrrrr !! I'm having a hard time believing how cold it is in the UK at the moment and the issues koi keepers are having with the freezing temperatures. We're used to that here and for that reason drain our pond plumbing, empty our filters, install deicers and so on before the freezing temps hit. Fingers crossed your weather returns to normal soon and that you and the entire menagerie of critters stay warm and safe. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hi Lau, great video, I too wear gloves cleaning my multibay freezing hands not good, pond temp here today around 7 degrees, fish have been moving but today most were chilling in a corner, I have partially closed my pond this year with a polycarbonate roof and the back, anyway Happy New year have a good one, nice to see the pooches.
Hi Scott. Luckily the cold only lasted a week here so pond is back at 11 now and fish are eating a little. They are active though. Yes gloves are good with multibay. Wishing you all the best for next year. Keep in touch.

I hate the winter, roll on spring 😉😉It's always good to check the water temp at the bottom of your pond if possible, yes they are in survival mode, but when they stop moving about, if the temp gets down to 2c or less, their insides can freeze. This is where you can start to loose koi. Thank goodness it's coming warmer tomorrow. You 2 have a great Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Hey Terry, you have made me giggled tonight with your leaves 🤣 just posted a comment on your video. Yes I have a long probe which I put at the bottom of the pond with an air stone attached to it (for the weight as the probe kept coming back up, and temps were the same 4ft deep. It's been raining all day and ambiant temps at 7pm was 9 degrees, so 15 degrees increase. It's madness. Doubt it's going to stay like that though . Have a nice Christmas and hope you are both well. X

Hi Chris, yes it was cosy in the filter house so I don't mind being there. The chicks are doing well too indeed 😁 I have always had a fire place since is was born, so common in France, so I have always had one here fitted too. Love it Have a nice Christmas and speak soon.
The fish will be fine in survival mode as you put it .Their metabolism slows right down in the lower temperatures this conserves energy hence why you don't have to feed them below certain temps as they have eaten enough throughout the warm months and stored some of this ready for the cold months.👍🏾

Hi lau good to see all is ok with the koi it’s been as low as -9 here in manchester the water in my temp holding tank went as low as -0.5 Friday night thankfully all was ok it’s well insulated nothing froze koi definitely didn’t like it. Have a great Christmas & new year

Hi both, I don't mind the filters really, the gloves really helps. The sponges are quickly done as I am not feeding so not bad. Have a great Christmas, kiss on the nose to Bizley and catch you next year at one of the shows I guess 😉
its interesting with my fish, during the day theyll be on the bottom but come evening they start swimming about like its summer lol . have a good one lau

Hi, 👋 It's been a strange start to winter hasn't it mild temperatures right up to December then it absolutely plummet down. Wow - 6 even where you live that is unusual. over the last couple of weeks people around the whole country have seen temperatures that is not common for their area i think alot of people will learn alot about their ponds and system this winter. I certainly did a good few years ago in the area up North that I live in. Which is why my system is now engineered the way it is to get my fish through the long winter's we get up here. I think the key to it or the best thing you can do if you are not going to heat (as its not an option for most these days) Speaking from my own experience is just do whatever you can to offer them some stability. Gradual temperature decrease keep out of that zone of around 2 or under that people seem to be loosing fish at. If you yourself are going to heat through the winter next year I would very much like to see from you, as you always seem to do a good job on research of the ideal winter temperature. Taking into account.. The fish's immune system vs bad bacteria activity that is trying to overcome it at certain low temperatures. Also if we are keeping the water warm enough for the fish to keep moving and keep off the bottom this will reduce their energy reserves that they have built up throughout the summer months. So does that mean we have to keep feeding throughout the winter months. And how does this affect the load on our filters at a certain low temperature. Also if the fish are active enough is there more risk of parasites and so should the temperature be at a range that treatment would be affective. I don't mean to give you homework lol 😂 I'd just be really interested to know a couple of these facts and you always do such a great job of explaining it. You have a whole year to work on it 😂😂😂 Great update again Lau, great to see all your animals looking well 👍 and again Best TH-cam seasonal wishes to you and yours 🙂
I like your way of thinking. I can answer some of those questions because I am looking so much into bacteria activity at the moment. but I want to get more info and reply properly. Now you are giving me some homework. That will keep me busy 😂
I use a 2k watt in line heater,£80 well spent.I keep them at 60f all winter and with insulation it uses less electricity than people think.Losing one fish can be more expensive than heating all winter
Absolutely. Completely agree with that. I had a look at the 2kw electric heater but that would be like £5 a day... Not sure I can manage that right now. Air source heat pump next year. Just need to pass this winter. So unusual for us down here. But it can happen.
Despite temps, our fish are still moving around. No heat but insulated. Net over and a little cover. Almost everything turned off apart from one pump. Brrrr. Stay safe and have a lovely Xmas
Really mild today, it's been raining non stop. Ambient temps back up to 9 degrees tonight at 7pm. It's weird because the pond is still at 4, but they are all swimming about and none at the bottom tonight. Strange. Have a nice Christmas both of you. X

How strange. Luckily it only lasted 3 days down here. Pond back up to 9 now. Active and started to feed a little.
