    The Pond Guru & his videos have helped me setup my filters properly & have them run more efficiently for nearly a decade now. I use Bio-Home Ultimate almost exclusively (some Sera/Siporax also) in my large tanks. I have hundreds of dollars of new Bio-gravel media I purchased from Great Wave Engineering here in the US. Which is the cheapest & only authorized seller here. The price is on par with all the other high-end media of similar quality. Sadly, what I have never achieved no matter how much Bio-Home Ultimate I use is nitrate reduction. I don't use any chemical products or binding agents nor anything else that would affect the microbes or prohibit the so called "anerobic bacteria" that is claimed his media will house. I've tried running a normally stocked 210-gal tank with (2) FX-6 filters, a 5-stage canister that holds more media than A FX-6, & an Aqua-clear 110 HOB. Just so I could have twice the amount of Bio-Home stated for a "full cycle" after years of failing to do so. Never once over the extended period of time was there any drop in nitrate production in any given week. Those filters are still running today minus the HOB & 3 years later & nitrate levels are blood red on API chart constantly. Granted the fish have gotten bigger & the bio-load heavier but we're talking 2x the stated the amount needed for "anerobic bacteria" & nitrate reduction. I can't image I am the only one with this issue. Based on some research on the topic on how NASA achieved such filtration in an aquarium in space (Science Direct.com), I'm not sure any filter bio-media can reduce nitrate naturally. 99.5% ethanol was used in a time release manner to achieve anoxic microbes, as something other than oxygen was required for it to form, & the ethanol was used as an electron doner which was required.

    One thing to keep in ind when most of the bio filtration is in the filter is that if you lose power a closed filter will kill the media in a couple of hours. Most reef tanks use a sump which is a second tank so if you lose power there is plenty of oxygen rich water in the sump for the media.

    Pondguru totally sold me on biohome a few years back when I was researching my first freshwater shrimp tank. Fast forward a few years and I've not set up a tank without the stuff yet, marine or freshwater, it's always getting some biohome in it. :)

    Been using bio home for two years now in all my aqaurims. Fresh water and salt water. In my opinion it's the best bio media on the market by far. And the best iv ever used. Hands down. 😉 👊 👊

    Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking of when I was researching for my 1st saltwater tank (I've been a freshie for more than 10 years now). Why do so many saltwater aquarists rely on just rock and sand for filtration when there are so many performance medias that have insane amounts of surface area, way more than any rock or sand could provide. Additionally these medias sit where water would flow constantly and would be mechanically filtered 1st (Sand and rock will just get clogged with the all the gunk in the water eg. detritus, algae etc) I've heard horror stories of long cycling periods and crazy ammonia spikes and I've never had that in my freshwater tank (Super high energy, high light, C02, heavy stock, heavy feeding albeit I also have a heavy plant load). The only thing I see that is similar in terms of filtration is the use of plants to control nutrient levels.
    (for biological filtration I run a fluval 407 for mechanical and biological filtration)

    I totally forgot about this interview and was hoping it wouldn't be a recording of a phone call with swearing....
    That's put the pressure on for doing the trade website now but I've been working on it this week so it's just about there.
    I'm sitting here laughing as I checked in when the video was only on 8 views and someone had already hit the dislike button, lol - I guess not everyone likes to have their filters working well....

    • @AaronsAquarium

      @pondguru 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, I didn't take it personally (I never do since there are always clowns in every hobby) but it's a real waste of time them doing that - I've never understood why people watch purely to hit the dislike button but we all get them.
      Google still class it as a interaction so it totally defeats the purpose, lol
      Hope you're well, man.

    Great video. I sent 2 of my internal filters to pond guru 2 weeks ago.
    He’s filled them with Biogravel so I’m hoping it will slowly help to lower my nitrates.
    I know internal filters aren’t great for marine tanks but I find them easier to manage than an external filter.
    I also know most say that a sump is the best for a marine tank but I have the tank in a bedroom and have been advised not to have a sump
    Tank in a bedroom as the noise will drive me crazy.
    Ideally I would like a 4ft tank with a rear filter system but unfortunately know one seems to make them and the only company I know that does make them is innovative marine and you can’t seem to get them in the uk.

    I use the Bio Home Media as the bio material in a couple of my aquariums. And I use the red lava rock in all the rest. Try as I might, I see no difference in water purity, or quality, length of time between water changes, etc, between tanks with the two different media. Also have never seen any conversations / comparisons done on utube. So I'm not saying BHM is bad, I'm just saying I'm not convinced BHM is the only way to go. Especially when I compare price for the results I get. Sorry.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How much media are you using in each filter / size of tank / stock of tank etc.? Feel free to send some useful details to sales@filterpro.co.uk (as I often miss youtube comments) and I will try to advise wherever I can as you should definitely see a difference in water quality between the two with regards to nitrate if enough media is used (and there are no chemical treatments killing off the bacteria) if you have been using it for 6 months+.
      Regards,
      Richard

    Sir 👍🏻 ,one thing marine pure vs bio home media which is better

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The biohome, definitely....not that I'm biased or anything, lol
      Seriously though all I would say to anybody asking that question is that if you're currently using a certain type of media (not necessarily biohome) and you have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0-5ppm nitrate with weekly water changes of around 10%-15% you shouldn't change a thing.
      However, if you have high nitrate (as most people do) then give the biohome a go - as long as you use a sensible amount then you should achieve full cycle and 0 or close to 0 nitrate. There are always multiple ways to achieve any goal and if marine pure is working for you then that's great.

      @@pondguru Hi Richard, just purchased 10kg for my 800 liter tank. question is what de-chorlinator do you recommend to use with bio home? i would like to get the full cycle without relying on prime or cycle etc...

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Whiteknight0721 The API Stress Coat is a good one as it basically makes the water safe for life and that includes bacteria. There is a definite problem with some of the dechlorinators which claim to detoxify / bind ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they have a very real 'starving' effect on bacteria - that ensures that the filter only remains at a low population of bacteria if the bacteria 'food' is not available....when the filter isn't working the company who sold the 'trojan horse' treatment will be all too happy to get you to by another one or two of their products to 'fix' the side effect of the first one.
      Best to stick to a 'normal' dechlorinator and API Stress Coat is one I'd definitely recommend.

    • @Whiteknight0721
      @Whiteknight0721 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pondguru that’s exactly why I asked i would prefer to let the biohome work and the water treatment to remove chlorine etc not filler. API stress coat is the why I will go

  • @TheMartynneil
    @TheMartynneil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So is this something you'd want in a more low flow area of the sump? Or is it something you could stick in a reactor and have fed from a manifold?

    • @AaronsAquarium
      @AaronsAquarium  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do both. Bear in mind though if you use it in a high flow area it won't work as well with Nitrates.

    • @TheMartynneil
      @TheMartynneil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm just thinking that I have a reasonably large reactor going unused at the moment. Didn't think it was that big when I bought it... If I slow the flow right down I could use this stuff in there! Keeps the sump looking clean and gives me a reason to use the reactor

    • @AaronsAquarium
      @AaronsAquarium  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if it's falling out onto the floor, you have too much. 🤣 Grown-up answer is no unless its working so well you have no nitrates at all then you would need to remove so as you don't want to remove all nitrates

    • @2cool4udk
      @2cool4udk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aarons Aquarium lol got it! 😂 - but yea seriously, that makes great sense. I plan on running an oversized Eheim canister filter with bio-media and an oversized in-line algae-reactor for a nano aquarium, so I may have to remove some of the bio-media in the canister if the chaeto in the reactor is doing to well. - thanks for the answer!

  • @Quepiid

    Biohome sucks. But I always used bio media. Don’t like the idea of using my tank as the filter. Even though it will if I ever remove the rocks my tank will not crash.
