That 2nd movement is the most profound, otherworldly, spiritual and ethereal piece of piano music ever written in my opinion. I honestly believe that Beethoven was and will remain utterly unique in human history; how any man, made of the exact same stuff as the rest of us, can have music like that inside of him, is simply astonishing. He soared to heights at this time of his life never surpassed before or since. I don't believe any other artist has ever communicated on an emotional level with quite the same degree of intensity, passion and honesty as Beethoven continues to do, almost 200 years after his death.
I had to hear this having just read the description in Thomas Mann's Dr Faustus. I knew Barenboim was the version to choose. Incredible performance, incredible piece. I've never heard before.
I felt exactly the same way ..must hear that sonata after reading Thomas Mann..because it's an unbeliveable description..and to hear it is to love it..this Beethoven touches deeply, he breaks all patterns , leaves all behind, and without any hearing..he follows the inner sequenze of tones and rhytmen, or the music of the spheres or the universe

Knowing the world nowadays, it is not surprising, either, that there are so few views on a platform for the average human around right now.
I am very glad to appreciate Bill Deef says. I am 9O and listened to all the Sonatas when Mr Barenboim played them when being quite young. Nowadays his playing is even more profound. I never have been to listen to anything as gorgeous rendering my favourite composer´s compositions as this Master. In addition it is perfectly natural, as if Beethoven played it. Aber die Gemessenheit und Kunstfertigkeit, mit der Beethoven hier die Sekunden (als Intervalle) tiefromantisch einsetzt, hat selbst Chopin sich nie getraut.

Tienen que tomarse el trabajo de averiguar las dedicatorias de cada sonata, y no dar por sentado que porque las tres primeras sonatas hayan sido dedicadas a Haydn el resto de las sonatas también. ;) Por lo demás, muy buenos los videos, muchas gracias por subirlos!!

Agreed this music does seem to be an objective view of humanity stated from another world. How Beethoven did this beats me completely
